Shoppers Guide Picture of the Week! The Otsego Main Street will be hosting a

“Main Street Building Basics” presentation October 23, 2013 at 6:00pm Otsego Main Street Office • 128 E. Allegan Street

The public, especially downtown property owners and individuals interested in historic preservation, are invited to attend.

The presentation will be conducted by Kelly Larson, Design Specialist for the State Historic Preservation Office. The presentation will focus on the history of downtowns and the evolution of older buildings over time. Also discussed will be good historic preservation principles and practices to maintain the unique qualities of historic buildings while also making them functional for today’s needs.

The presentation is a kick-off point for the Otsego Main Street Design Committee to select up to three downtown buildings over the next year to receive no-cost design services intended to facilitate the rehabilitation of a building’s façade. Any building located within the downtown is eligible to receive the services that include a schematic drawing of the proposed façade improvement and paint samples. The design services are provided by the State Historic Preservation office and Michigan Main Street Center at the Michigan State Housing Development Authority.

Any property owner interested in receiving the services must first attend a “Main Street Building Basics” presentation. An application, available at the presentation and at the Main Street office, can then be submitted to the Design Committee for review and approval. Recently, while traveling to a Cross Country meet in Dowagiac, we stopped at a road side place for a sandwich. While there, we fell into a conversation with two gentlemen from Hartford, MI. I told them my home town was nearby Watervliet – a thriving city in the l950s. They happened to be United Methodists. We talked about people we knew in common (mostly ministers). I threw a ringer into the conversation by commenting “Do you remember seeing an ice cream truck frequently driving into your neighborhood? The name of the business was Dan’s Ice Cream.” One of the gentlemen said “I remember it well. I was about five years old at the time and I remember the truck being a new l964 GMC with an attached freezer and three bells on the top of the cab.” I said, “That was me!” Yes, I owned my own ice cream business. That was fifty years ago. For four summers I would drive through Watervliet, Coloma, Hartford and the surrounding area ringing the bells and selling ice cream to children of all ages - every day except Sunday. Ice milk bars were l0 cents each or one could buy a real ice cream bar for l5 cents! I had saved enough money from delivering newspapers to buy the business and that business paid for a good portion of my college education. My new friend was so captivated with the ice cream truck memory that I told him I would send him a picture of it. Childhood memories can be very sweet (no pun intended!). Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to appreciate how small our world is. In Jesus’ name. Amen. Family and friends are welcome to come and share their memories and stories. Robert “Bob” MEALEY AGE 69 – OTSEGO, MI

Bob was born to Beulah and Clyde Mealey on August 13, 1944. He was called home by our Lord on October 11, 2013 at the V.A. Hospital in Battle Creek. He served proudly for the Army in the Vietnam War. He worked as a machinist and mechanic most of his life. In his retirement years, he loved working on lawn mowers and anything else with a small engine. This made him many friends and loyal customers. Everyone who knew him, loved him. His surviving family includes children Adam Stacey, Robert L. Mealey II and Garnet Melville. Through his children, he leaves behind many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Also surviving him are brothers Dale (Jean) Mealey of Parkersburg, West Virginia, Thomas Mealey and Russell Mealey both of Delaware, sisters Shirley (Richard) Blair of Alto and Mary Ann McMahon of Plainwell. Many nieces and nephews will also be missing him. Preceding him in death were brother Bill Mealey and sister Pearl (Norman) Guerin. A committal service and burial of his ashes will be held on October 22 at 12:00pm at the V.A. National Cemetery in Battle Creek.

Arlene May (LaFountain) HARRISON AGE 55 – PLAINWELL, MI

Arlene was born on March 27, 1958. She passed away peacefully at her home on October 16, 2013. Arlene was a creative, passionate woman who loved her children and grandchildren dearly. She loved gardening, collecting rocks from the beach, mushroom hunting, painting and spending time with her beloved husband of 34 years, David, who survives. Also surviving are her children, Sally (Keith) Westerhouse and DJ Harrison; grandchildren Sam, Matthew, Abbey and Hannah; mother-in-law Judy Harrison; siblings Wanda (Lyle) Warren, Raymond LaFountain Jr. and Melissa (Randy) Phillips. Also surviving are several in-laws, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Arlene was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Sally LaFountain. There will be a celebration of Arlene's life held on Sunday, October 20, 2013 at the Orangeville Township Hall from 1-5pm. AGE 54 – OTSEGO, MI Stephen passed away Wednesday, October 16, 2013 in Kalamazoo. Steve was born September 18, 1959 in Kalamazoo, the son of Howard and Thelma (Sheflea) Rex. Steve was a graduate of Otsego High School. He was an avid NHRA dragster race fan, attending many events at the Martin drag strip. Steve also enjoyed fishing and had participated in many bass tournaments, and spent winters in Florida. Survivors include his father; sisters, Jackie (Dave) Dutton of Otsego and Susan Paolella of Winter Haven, Florida; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother; sister, Sally Girling (Rex), and brother-in-law, Charles Paolella. Cremation has taken place and a private family service will take place at a later date. Lawrence “Larry” A. FLEGAL AGE 91 – PLAINWELL

Lawrence “Larry” A. Flegal, of Plainwell passed away at home as a result of a massive stroke on Sunday, October 13, 2013 at the age of 91. He was born on January 11, 1922 in Kalamazoo. Larry was the son of George and Mary (MacDonald) Flegal. Larry graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1940. He married Mary Patnoude on September 13, 1941 in Kalamazoo. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. When he returned from the military he was a letter carrier in Parchment for 31 years. Larry sang lead for over 16 years with the Mall City Harmonizers Barbershop Chorus. “How about a song, Larry?” He lived in his home for 60 years. Every year for 44 years Larry and Mary traveled in their camper throughout the US and Canada. Larry is survived by his wife of 72 years, Mary; four daughters: Judy (Jerry) Shumaker, of Plainwell; Jill (Nick Johnson) Flegal, of Colorado; Anne (Dennis) Kirby, of Cooper Twp; Joni (Curt) Haggard, of Virginia; special dog: Summer; six grandchildren: Mike Shumaker; Mark Shumaker; Larry and Kim Morrell; Molly and Ryan Wieber; Randy and Heather Haggard; Bobby and Lindsay Haggard; and six great grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters: Mary Lee Griffth, of Kalamazoo; Donna Wright, of Kalamazoo; Jane Wells, of Ohio; one brother: Richard Flegal, of Florida; sister-in-law: June Daugherty, of Brooklyn; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by two sisters: Helen Felder and Corrine Rice; sisters-in-law: Helen MacLeay; Pearl Benson; Ruth Bodfish; brothers-in-law: Donald Patnoude; Preston Patnoude; Bob Patnoude; Justus Patnoude. The funeral service was held on Thursday, October 17th at the Life Story Funeral Home, with Pastor Dan Minor officiating. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to any animal rescue. Spencer “Skip” SHERWOOD AGE 74 – OTSEGO, MI

Skip passed away Wednesday, October 16, 2013, in Plainwell. Skip was born June 29, 1939 in Otsego, the son of Spencer and Millicent (Smith) Sherwood. He worked for Parker Brass for 40 years before his retirement in 2002. On December 3, 1960 he married Romaine Ellis in Otsego. Skip was a member of the Otsego Fire Department. He enjoyed hunting, ﬁshing, and cutting wood (often sharing with many of his neighbors and friends). More than anything Skip loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. Surviving are his 3 daughters, Lenette Sherwood (Carol Batker) of Raleigh, NC, Anita Sherwood and Edith (Bret) Rietkerk both of Otsego; grandchildren, Matthew (Tara) Boerman, Katie Rietkerk, Mariah Rininger, and Ain Rietkerk; great-granddaughters Keira and Quinn Boerman. He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; an infant son; and son, Shawn Thomas Sherwood. Friends may meet with his family on Saturday, October 19, 2013 from 1:00 P.M. until time of the service at 2:00 P.M. at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, MI with Pastor Joe Shaler ofﬁciating. James Severe “Jim” FORCIER AGE 81 - OTSEGO, MI

Jim passed away Tuesday, October 15, 2013 in Battle Creek. Mr. Forcier was born December 8, 1931 in St. Paul, MN to Benjamin and Blanche (Jones) Forcier. He graduated from Wilson High School, St. Paul, and earned his Bachelor Degree from the University of Minnesota. During the Korean War he served his country for two years in the U.S. Navy and then three years in the Marines, and was awarded the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. He was employed with Minnesota Milk for several years. In 1965 he moved to Waconia, MN and worked for Oak Grove Dairy through 1969. In 1970 he moved to Otsego where he was employed in sales for M.D.E. Corp., retiring in 1996. Jim loved to golf, bowl, take trips in his motor home and spend the winters in Clearwater, FL. He was a world traveler and a member of the Otsego Elks Lodge #1711, V.F.W. Post #3030, Michigan Dairy Association, D.A.V., and American Legion. On May 24, 1952 in St. Paul he married the former Carol Sorlie, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Jim Forcier of Minneapolis, Kathy (Kurt) Hatfield of Allegan, Tom (Jackie) Forcier and Jeff Forcier, both of Otsego and Mike Forcier; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, Gene Forcier of Pittsburgh, PA; two sisters, Virginia Scatterelli of Minneapolis and Marcie Bungurt of Bloomington, MN; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Ben and Dick Forcier. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. Friday, October 18, 2013 at St. Margaret Catholic Church, Otsego, Rev. Fr. Brian Stanley celebrant. Burial with Military Honors by V.F.W. Post #3030 and the Fort Custer Honor Guard will be at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, at 1:00 P.M. Friday. In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Jim may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Elks Major Project or the Veterans Hospital of Battle Creek. Jack V. NICHOLS AGE 81 – OTSEGO, MI

Jack went to be with his Lord on October 10, 2013 in Alamo. Mr. Nichols was born December 10, 1931, in Otsego to Robert and Bertha (Finger) Nichols. Jack served his country in the U.S. Navy. For over 35 years he worked for Menasha Corp. until his retirement. He also served on the Otsego Fire Dept. for 32 years. On February 17, 1956 he married Betty Trutsch, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Ralph of Allegan, Esta of Otsego, John (Heather) of Otsego and Rose (Mike) Peters of Pullman; 5 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary (Bill) Kracher of Kalamazoo; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; 7 sisters and 5 brothers. Funeral services were held Monday, October 14, 2013 at Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Celebrant Bill Rose officiated. Cremation took place. A burial of ashes and Military Honors at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, will be held at a later date. Contributions in memory of Jack may be made to Otsego Fire Dept.
