COMMUNITY SHOPPERS GUIDE...OTSEGO, MI 49078...October 19, 2019....Phone 694-9431

YOU MAY NOT NEED A HEARING AID... IT MIGHT JUST BE WAX! ARE YOU EXPERIENCING THE FOLLOWING?

• Do you have ringing in your ears? • Do you find yourself asking people to speak up or repeat themselves more often than you used to? • Do you turn up the volume on the television so high it disturbs your spouse, or other family members? • Are you having trouble at work because you sometimes miss key pieces of information? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, it is time to schedule your FREE hearing screening!

WHY GET A HEARING TEST?

Uncorrected hearing loss leads to higher hospitalization rates and health care costs, according to new research from Johns Hopkins University in collaboration with AARP. The study looked at health data of 150,000 people age 50 and over. It found that over a period of 10 years, individuals with untreated hearing loss had a 52 percent greater risk of dementia, a 41 percent higher risk of depression, and an almost 30 percent greater risk of falls than those with no hearing loss.

CURRENT HEARING AID WEARERS?

We will take a look inside your ear using a tiny video camera called a Video Otoscope. This may help you understand why you may be experiencing difficulties with your hearing.

RSVP TODAY and RECEIVE: $850 0FF of an Amaze Technology System* Expiration: 10-25-19

We accept most insurance and discount plans. We will meet and exceed their programs including: MPSERS-TruHearing, Medicare Advantage, RX Drugs Plans, Health Care & Silver programs.

FREE CLEAN AND CHECK-UP of your current hearing aids.

What to Know Before Replacing Home Windows

(StatePoint) As with any home upgrade, a little research can help ensure a top-quality installation with the best materials on the market. Here are the most important factors to consider before purchasing replacement windows: • Energy Efficiency: Energy-efficient windows can keep utility bills in-check while helping manage climate control. Seek out the ENERGY STAR label, which indicates a product is energy efficient according to standards from the U.S. Environmental

Protection Agency and the Department of Energy. Numbers don’t lie so be sure to also check the National Fenestration Rating Council Label to compare performance between energy-efficient windows in the following categories: U-Factor (how well the window retains heat), Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (how well it resists unwanted heat gain), Visible Transmittance (how well it lets in natural light), Air Infiltration (how drafty the window is), and Condensation Resistance (how well it resists inside surface condensation). • Test Specifications: All windows on the market are tested for their structural integrity, as well as their resistance to air and water. Investigating these ratings is important, particularly in regions that see wicked weather. • Insulation: For maximum energy efficiency and comfort, look for new technologies such as Neopor insulation and INNERGY thermal reinforcements that deliver highperformance and meet ENERGY STAR certification standards. Windows offered by ProVia, for example, include these features and are tested against the most stringent requirements for air and water infiltration, wind load resistance, ease of operation, forced entry and more. • Material: Windows are available in such materials as vinyl, wood, aluminum and fiberglass. Understanding the benefits of each can help you arrive at the right decision for your home, priorities and budget, and new options even mix materials, combining

different advantages into one product. • Warranty Availability: Replacement Windows can cost thousands of dollars and should last a long time, so consider protecting your investment by opting for windows that come with a comprehensive lifetime warranty that’s transferrable to the next homeowner. This can potentially increase your home’s value should you put it on the market. • Style: The style of your new windows can complement the architectural features of your home, provide visual interest and boost curb appeal. Using online design resources and visualizer tools can help you see how particular hardware finishes, colors, add-ons,

finishing options and accessories will look on your home. • Recognition: Third-party recognition for a particular brand or product is a strong indicator that you’re investing in a quality product. A recent “Remodeling” magazine survey of remodeling contractors ranked ProVia vinyl windows as number one in window quality, citing its unique ability to customize as needed, its personalized customer service, strong warranties and mix of state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment and human craftsmanship. Lastly, the brand was recognized for strong attention to detail, as it follows an 80-plus item checklist for quality control. More information can be found at provia.com/windows.

essential oils is anticipated to grow significantly (more than 9 percent) over the next several years, according to Grand View Research. More households are catching onto the fact that these beneficial plant-based ingredients have a range of cleaning and home care uses. To get in on the trend, consider these cool home care uses for essential oils:

• Wipe Surfaces: Creating your own cleaning supplies can make chores a little easier on the eyes, nose and throat. The good news is that certain essential oils, like tea tree and lemon oil can help fight dirt and grime, as well as kill bacteria and viruses, making them an excellent addition to homemade cleaning solutions and wipes.

them apart from traditional insecticide sprays,” says John Scarchilli of Procter & Gamble Ventures, which sell Zevo online and at select Target and The Home Depot stores.

• Bust Fridge Odors: Even if you regularly rid your fridge of old items and wipe down its surfaces, combatting fridge odor can be a losing battle, as the plastic components tend to absorb odors over time. Make that box of baking soda that you have in your refrigerator work a bit harder. To go beyond simply neutralizing odors, add a few drops of essential lemon oil to it for a crisp, fresh scent.

• Revive Fabrics: Take a natural approach to fresh-smelling fabrics. Create your own

spray by combining baking soda, distilled water and a touch of your favorite essential oils. Use the formula on linens, upholsteries, window treatments or any other fabrics around your home in need of a scent boost. • Create Calm: You don’t have to do a full hygge-inspired renovation project to promote a peaceful atmosphere in your home’s spaces. With just a diffuser and such essential oils as lavender and bergamot, you can fill a room with a calming scent.

For clean, healthy, bug-free spaces, consider introducing essential oils into your home’s supply kit. A small but mighty dose can go a long way.

• Banish Bugs: Most traditional home insecticide products use the same active ingredients initially developed almost 50 years ago. Interestingly, the right mix of essential oils can also be highly lethal to bugs. Familiar ingredients such as lemongrass oil and geraniol in Zevo Instant Action Sprays target nerve receptors active only in insects, not people or pets. “Zevo bug sprays are effective because they target insects’ unique biology with a blend of effective essential oils, setting

When It Can Be Smart To Hire a Painting Pro COMMUNITY SHOPPERS GUIDE...OTSEGO, MI 49078....Fall Home Section...October 19, 2019 ....Phone 694-9431

Fall Home Section I 2019

As DIY-friendly as painting can be, when attempting to paint the interior or exterior of their homes, homeowners may learn that some painting projects are best left to the professionals. Painting requires skill, patience and a knowledge of how various paints — including finishes for particular applications — will hold up. Novice painters may do more harm than good by dripping paint on expensive carpeting or floors or fail to recognize the nuances that indicate a spot-on painting job.

Photo credit: Ian Sherriffs - Fotolia.com

Professional painters have spent hours upon hours learning the ropes of what works — and what does not. Painters often understand that painstaking preparatory work is crucial to getting pristine finished results. Walls and ceilings must be properly repaired and prepared even before a base coat is applied. Professional painters also have an eye for details. And because professional painters make a business out of doing interior and exterior surfaces, they understand which techniques can improve efficiency. That means a professional job can typically be completed much more quickly than a DIY project.

Few things can revitalize a home more readily than a fresh coat of paint.

Even though some people think they’ll save money by painting their own homes, that’s not necessarily true. Professionals already have all the equipment necessary, unlike novices who may need to make repeated and potentially costly trips to the hardware store for supplies. Plus, if mistakes happen, DIYers have to spend additional time and money fixing them.

Thanks in part to the affordability of paint and its ease of application, painting is something that even novice DIYers can typically handle. According to the marketing advice guru Brandon Gaille, it is estimated that residential interior paint only lasts around three years before it needs to be updated. Exterior paint can fade, chip and peel due to various environmental factors. As a result, many homes can likely use a fresh coat of paint in at least one room.

Renovate your homeowners policy. Jeremy Weitting, Agent 911 Dix Street, Suite A Otsego, MI 49078 Bus: 269-692-6831

Safety can be a large motivator for turning painting over to a pro. Navigating exterior areas or tall interior ceilings can be challenging and may require scaffolding or tall ladders DIYers do not have. Risk of falls or other injuries increase with lack of experience.

Painting can give a home a facelift, and oftentimes it is smart to turn the work over to professionals to ensure the job is done just right. SH192650

How to Level

an Uneven

Yard

COMMUNITY SHOPPERS GUIDE...OTSEGO, MI 49078....Fall Home Section...October 19, 2019 ....Phone 694-9431

Fall Home Section I 2019

Many things can cause a yard to be uneven. Drainage problems, leaky pipes beneath the grass and pests can wreak havoc on a yard, resulting in uneven turf that can be both unsightly and unsafe.

Addressing an uneven yard might be homeowners’ ultimate goal, but the home experts at BobVila.com note that homeowners should first figure out what’s causing the problem and make fixing that their first task. Fixing uneven ground above leaky pipes will only be a temporary fix if the leaks themselves are not addressed. Professional contractors might be necessary depending on what’s causing the problem. However, once the underlying issue has been addressed, many homeowners can handle the task of leveling an uneven yard on their own.

• Get the right tools and materials. Leveling an uneven yard may require various tools. Thatch will likely need to be removed from the lawn before it can be leveled out, so homeowners will need a

thatch rake or dethatching machine to get this task started. Dethatching machines are generally necessary for especially large lawns, and these can typically be rented from home improvement retailers. A shovel, bow rake and push broom are other tools homeowners will likely need. Materials such as topsoil, compost and sand will be necessary as well, and these are typically sold at local garden centers.

• Fill in areas beneath the grass. Areas beneath the grass can be filled in with a mixture of sand, topsoil and compost. The experts at BobVila.com advise using two parts sand, two parts topsoil and one part compost. Each of these components plays its own role in restoring the yard to full health. Sand helps the ground stay level, while the topsoil and compost provide the grass with valuable nutrients. If the low spots are not especially deep, this mixture can be applied without removing the grass. However, before filling in holes when addressing spots that are deeper than two

or three inches, remove the grass then place it back in place once the hole has been filled. To dig up the grass, put the blade of the shovel at the outside of the low spot before sliding it under about two or three inches so you do not upset the grass roots.

• Spread the top dressing. Once the holes have been filled and the grass has been placed back on the ground (if it was removed), spread the top dressing mix with a shovel. The mix should be spread evenly with the back of the bow rake at a depth of no more than half an inch. Make sure the mix is worked into the low spots and that it’s not completely covering the grass, as that will suffocate the lawn. If necessary, use the push broom to work the mix into the soil.

• Water the lawn. Finally, water the lawn to help the top dressing settle into the grass. If necessary, repeat the process of applying top dressing and watering until the lawn is even and has returned to full strength.

An uneven lawn is an eyesore and potentially harmful. But fixing an uneven lawn is simple once homeowners discover and address what’s behind the issue. FH198132

Easy Ways to Clean Up Leaves

COMMUNITY SHOPPERS GUIDE...OTSEGO, MI 49078....Fall Home Section...October 19, 2019 ....Phone 694-9431

Fall Home Section I 2019

Autumn is marked by colorful foliage and plummeting temperatures. Once those leaves reach peak color, they fall from the branches and collect on lawns, necessitating cleanup projects. For homeowners with big yards, such a project can be tiring and time-consuming. However, there are ways to make leaf cleanup easier. One of the easiest ways to clean up leaves is to reach for a lawn mower rather than a rake. The mower will cut leaves down to smaller sizes, creating an effective mulch that can add nutrients back into the lawn. Davey, a lawn and landscape solutions service, says that mowed leaves also can be collected in a mower bag and added to garden beds or compost piles.

,ªšn , ªšn ª šn @Ó¼× Ón #ÏÓ /n[‘@šåÞ

Raking leaves onto a large tarp is another option. Once it’s full, the tarp can be taken to the curb where many towns will collect the leaves seasonally. Otherwise, the tarp can be used as a funnel to put leaves into a gardening bag or another appropriate receptacle.

Leaf blowers remain a fast option for cleaning up yards, but they require electricity or gas and can be noisy. Still, they are a popular choice for large landscapes or when quick work needs to be made of leaf clean-up.

For those who prefer manual raking, select a rake with tines that will not skewer the leaves in the process. Big rakes also can make faster work of gathering leaves into piles.

One of the easiest ways to clean up leaves is to reach for a lawn mower rather than a rake.

The home improvement resource, The Family Handyman advocates for the use of a lawn sweeper. This is a manual device that has a rotating sweeping brush that gathers up lawn debris and leaves into an attached hopper bag. Like mowed leaves, the bag can be emptied into a compost pile or distributed where needed.

Why homeowners should add more

EXTERIOR LIGHT to their properties Homeowners are increasingly realizing the benefits of improving the exteriors of their home, which can be just as valuable as improving the interior spaces. As individuals design picturesque garden beds and cultivate lavish lawns or revamp exteriors with architectural features, they probably want to spotlight these improvements. This is where exterior lighting can be put to great use. Exterior illumination can cast a glow on various features, but there are many other reasons to increase lighting around the exterior of a home.

• Safety: Trips and falls can occur at night when trying to traverse walkways and landscapes in the dark, as it can be difficult to see rocks, stairs and uneven pavement. Outdoor lighting can illuminate pathways, entryways and other areas for safer access for homeowners and their guests.

• Extend outdoor entertaining: Ample lighting can increase the amount of time one can use outdoor spaces and make them the perfect gathering spot. As autumn arrives, days become shorter. However, patios, porches and more can get extended use with lighting.

• Safeguard security: A well-lit home may be less likely to be targeted by burglars than one swathed in darkness and shadows. Lights can remain on all evening or be motiontriggered. Setting lights on timers also ensures that the home is illuminated whether residents are home or not. • Create drama: Landscape lighting designers can establish focal points around the landscape and highlight the best features of a property. Uplighting in trees, silhouetting techniques to showcase plants and spotlights to show off architectural features are all options for homeowners to consider. • Add value: The experts at Parker Homescape, a landscape design service, say that exterior lighting can add roughly 30 percent to the value of a home. They also indicate that 50 percent of all home buyers say that outdoor lighting is important when buying a home. If current residents are thinking about selling, now may be the time to invest in exterior lighting.

Improving a home’s exterior may be as simple as adding more lighting to improve functionality and beauty. FH198137

Our hearts still ache in silent sadness. Maxine and Family

We live in a world of worry. We worry about our nation, our future, our family, our health, our work, our church and many other things. Worry has been known to cause ulcers, boost blood pressure and to cause migraine headaches and thyroid problems. It is well documented that 92% of the things we worry about never happen!

There is a poem called “The Worry Cow” which goes like this: “The worry cow would have lived till now If she hadn’t lost her breath. But she thought her hay wouldn’t last all day So she mooed herself to death” - Unknown source

Jesus did not condemn people for worrying, but showed us a better way. Specifically, when Jesus assured us our basic material needs would be taken care of (food, drink and clothing). He was not downplaying our physical needs. During our Lord’s ministry on earth He knew what it meant to go without these things. The Scriptures document that even “the Son of man did not have a place to lay his head” (Luke 9:58). He knew hunger and thirst. On His cross they gambled for the last article of clothing to his name (Luke 23:34).

Jesus reasoned if He cares for the birds of the air and flowers of the field, how much more does our Heavenly Father makes provision for our needs... (Matthew 6:25-26, 28-32). Jesus taught us to focus upon Him and to trust Him to see us through.

The word anxious (worry) comes from a combination of words which mean “to divide.” Thus, when Jesus said “Do not be anxious” (Matthew 6:34), He was saying “Beware of the divided mind.” In other words, “Keep your priorities straight.” “Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things shall be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:33 NIV).

The best way to deal with worry is to “Cast all your anxiety upon Him for He cares for you” (I Peter 5:7). Then we will truly be able to live one day at a time (Matthew 6:34).

In other words, worry less and trust more!

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for caring for us. In Your strong name. Amen

Danielle Marie Dyer Though our hearts are full of sadness, our wonderful memories of you will always be with us. Gramie, Aunt Tammy & family

From the wife & family of

Dick Mann

We are so grateful to all of you that sent cards, brought food, called and came over, showed your love and support, and comforted us during our time of loss and sorrow.

A very special thanks to Winkel Funeral Home, Southwest Michigan Hospice, and the Otsego Elks for all the help getting us through this very sad time.
