Water damage is a potentially costly problem that can afflict any home. Old homes tend to be most susceptible to water damage, and that damage can manifest itself in various ways. The following are some telltale signs of water damage that should give prospective home buyers pause and compel current homeowners to seek professional assistance as soon as possible. Stains

Many prospective home buyers have been disappointed by the sight of water stains during an open house or home inspection. Water stains tend to be on ceilings and/or walls. Stains on ceilings tend to be round, while wall stains are straight lines down the wall that may or may not have forced paint to peel. Water stains are not necessarily indicative of a major problem, but homeowners should have the stains examined by a professional while potential buyers should direct their home inspector’s attention to the stains. Wood around windows or doors that is deteriorating may indicate water problems.

By the time autumn hits full swing, many trees will have shed their leaves for the season, and the last vestiges of red, yellow and orange magic will have faded to brown. Raking, blowing and collecting leaves becomes the primary chores of lawn and yard maintenance, and presents most homeowners with large piles of gathered leaves to tend to.

It is impossible to count just how many leaves fall to the ground each year, or just how many pounds of leaves get collected curbside, but the numbers are substantial. Cleaning up leaves is considerable work, but not all of those leaves need to be carted away. In fact, there are several different uses of leaves that can be beneficial. 1. Spread leaves as a protective mulch to cover tender perennials or root crops/bulbs in the ground. The leaves will form a natural insulating cover that keeps the soil and the plants within a bit warmer over winter.

2. Create a pile of leaves that will break down and form a crumbly, compost-like material called leaf mold. Even though leaf mold may sound like a blight, it’s actually a good amendment to garden soil, improving its structure and ability to hold water. Leaf mold also attracts beneficial organisms that are vital in healthy soil. 3. Brown leaves can be added to green materials in compost piles to improve the health of the compost being formed.

According to the healthy living resource Care2, the ideal ratio is 75 percent brown to 25 percent green materials in compost. Turn compost piles regularly to aerate them.

4. Store dried, mulched leaves in a dry spot so they can be used in the spring as a weed barrier for spring plantings. They will keep weeds at bay and help retain soil moisture to ensure small sprouts have the resources to grow. 5. Use shredded leaves as a lawn supplement. Pass a lawn mower over leaves left on the lawn to break them down into pieces too small to rake. This will help keep the lawn healthy throughout the winter without blocking out needed sunlight.

6. Bag dried leaves and pack them tightly together in cold areas of the home, such as basements or garages. They can act as added insulation. Bags of leaves also can be placed around planting containers to protect them from frost.

7. Gather a few of the best-looking leaves and preserve them. Use an iron on a low setting and press leaves between two pieces of waxed paper until the waxed paper seals together. Or use clear contact paper to achieve the same effect.

Fallen leaves can be used in many different ways throughout the year.

Thomas E. BUTLER Thomas passed away on October 17, 2018 with his wife and children by his side. Tom was born on July 21, 1949 to Glenn & Anna (Surdick) Butler. Julie passed away on Friday, October 12, 2018 at the age of 52. Julie was the daughter of Murray and Patricia (White) McLoud and was born on September 21, 1966. Julie was also known by her nicknames “Chestnut” given to her by her Grandpa White, and “Jubabe” given by her father. She was a very loving wife, mother, grandmother that will help anyone. At a young age Julie became a mother, got her G.E.D and studied Law at Davenport University. She worked for a short time for Wesco in Plainwell and Clark gas station in Martin. On June 24, 2014 she married Richard Keith. She is survived by her husband of five years, Richard Keith, of Plainwell; three sons: Daniel (Amanda) Bacon, of Martin; Michael (Lacey) Bacon, of Plainwell; Ryan McLoud, of Plainwell; step-daughter: Jacquelyn (Brent) Peters, of Highland; ten grandchildren: Paytin, Kaitlyn, McCoy Bacon; Alexis and Alley Bacon; Stephen and Ryan, Jr. McLoud; and Preston, Quinton, and Carson Peters. She is also survived by her mother, Patricia McLoud, of Plainwell; her siblings: Jeffery (Soni) Richards, of Pullman; Patricia “Tinker” (Dave Johnson) Baldwin, of Plainwell; Tonja (Curt Newnum) McLoud, of Plainwell; David (Robin) McLoud, of OH; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her father, Murray McLoud and sister, Kathie Quinn. Cremation has taken place and a gathering will be held at a later date. “THE UNSHAKABLE FOUNDATION”

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock” - Matthew 7:24-25 In l986 a six-story building (Lian Yak Building, meaning Hotel New World) occupied by a hotel, bank and nightclub crumbled to the ground in under 60 seconds. Thirty three lives were taken. An inquiry revealed that the building’s original engineer had made a fatal error. While he had calculated the building’s live load (the weight of the building’s occupants and furnishings, etc.) he did not consider the building’s dead load (the weight of the building itself). Thus, the building collapsed because it could not support its own weight.

In the spiritual realm, God is the Architect and Builder of our lives. Jesus told the story of two builders. He did this to illustrate that building a life is like a building a house. We can either build on rock or on sand. The sand He referred to was the wide, dry river beds in Palestine. These beds were made by the melting snow coming down from the mountains. A house built on the sand was not a safe place to build.

In the spiritual realm, a life built on sand will not stand for long. For example, a life built on the sands of selfcenteredness, materialism, greed, hate; bitterness and resentment are not capable of surviving the storms of life.

Jesus (Our Rock) offers a better option; an unshakable foundation. To build our lives on Christ is to build a life on Truth, faith, hope, love and service. Jesus never promised an easy life. He did, however, promise His presence for every storm.

In I Corinthians 3:11 we read, “For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

Our choice is clear: Rock or Sand?

Prayer: Dear Lord, with the hymn writer we pray, “On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand” (Edward Mote, 1834)

Thank you for your support of this fundraising event for cancer research at Van Andel Institute for Purple Community! 100% of our proceeds go directly to researchers! This year’s goal was $28,200 ...and we surpassed it!! This biennial event has raised over $70,000 for research at Van Andel Institute since 2010. Purple Week consists of in-school activities throughout the week building up to the varsity football game and carnival Friday night. This is the fifth year the high school has raised funds for the Van Andel Institute in Grand Rapids, trying to reach a milestone of $100,000 total raised! WE DID IT! We’re now on their legacy wall!
