Board Meets 2nd Monday of Every Month, 7:30am - Otsego City Hall

COMMITTEES DESIGN Meets 3rd Monday of Every Month, 6pm - Main Street Office

Design Committee works to create an aesthetically pleasing downtown while also focusing on preserving our historical heritage whenever possible. They make updates to the downtown art garden, drum up support for the painting of downtown benches and bins (with help from students last year!), and are working closely on our Riverfront Development. Their next meeting is November 20, 2017

ECONOMIC VITALITY Meets 2nd Monday of Every Month, 6pm - Main Street Office

Please Consider Volunteering

We have had countless volunteers help us along the way, and we still need more help to get where we want to be. Please consider volunteering with us for one day or many days! Everything helps! Take a look at our schedule of what’s coming up. Are there are any meetings or events you would like to be a part of to help our mission. If interested, call our office at 269-692-2336 or email me at jsaukas@cityofotsego.org.

Volunteer Stories

From Volunteer Nancy Zyzelewski: “Main Street is doing an outstanding job bringing community together to experience & celebrate what Otsego has to offer.”

Nancy helps to put on and plan our annual Gus Macker Basketball Tournament. She has a busy enough schedule already teaching, but still finds time to give dozens of hours to volunteer. Thank you for all that you do, Nancy, and we will strive to continue our good work with yours and others’ help.

The Economic Vitality Committee researches best practices for businesses in the downtown to stay successful, and as well seeks to recruit new businesses to fill vacancies. The EV committee will soon be touring the insides of vacant downtown buildings to build a better picture for potential recruitment. Their next meeting is November 13, 2017.

ORGANIZATION Meets 1st Wednesday of Every Month, 4:15pm - City Hall

For all things related to volunteering, fundraising, and working to build partnerships, the Organization Committee is there to answer the call. The committee has recently worked to expand sponsorships, rather than relying on the same donors every year. Their next meeting is November 1, 2017.

PROMOTIONS Meets 1st Monday of Every Month, 6pm - Main Street Office

The Promotions Committee is often one of the more visible committees; they work on the spectacular events you see downtown! Hometown Christmas, the Riverfront Family Festival, Poker Crawl, and more are all planned and implemented by dedicated volunteers in the Promotions Committee. These events help build community and give incentives to shop or eat downtown. Next meeting is November 6, 2017.

VETERANS DAY • NOVEMBER 11TH Once referred to as Armistice Day, Veterans Day is a time to recognize all the men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces during wartime and peacetime. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, there are over 21.8 million veterans in the United States, many of whom served in wars, like the Korean Conflict, and the Persian Gulf War. On November 11th, pay tribute to our veterans and thank them for the sacrifice they have made to preserve our freedom and protect our country. Army Sgt. USAR Ronald M. Bennett Vietnam 1966 - 1968

Plainwell Officially Welcomes Papa Murphy's Take 'N' Bake Pizza

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Saturday, September 16, 2017 to welcome the new business. Owners Kevin and Brandi Watts opened the store on May 1st of this year at 1285 M-89, Plainwell. The store is next to AT&T, nearby the Plainwell Walgreens. They chose this location because they felt Plainwell/Otsego is a well-populated and high traffic area that could use this type of service. Kevin and Brandi understand the demands of busy family life and how great it is to pick up quality pizza and eat it freshly baked in a short time.

Fall Home Section I 2017

Home improvement projects range from major construction overhauls like bathroom remodeling jobs to smaller renovations that may entail something as minor as painting the walls. Smaller projects can often be conquered in a typical weekend but still provide a strong sense of accomplishment. The following are five projects tailor-made for weekend warriors.

RESIDENTIAL & COMMERCIAL

• Mowing • Trimming • Fall Leaf Clean-up • Tree Trimming • Gutter Clean-out • Snowplowing • All Hauling Needs • Curbside Leaf Removal

1. Improve storage in the entryway. Home entryways are the first places many people drop mail, shed their shoes and toss their keys upon arriving home. As a result, entryways can quickly be overrun with clutter. Storage solutions can include putting in a desk or hutch with baskets underneath to store umbrellas and backpacks. Or hang a coat rack and create a shoe rack to store shoes until the time comes to leave the house once again.

2. Shed new light. Add some design appeal

to your home by replacing an old lighting fixture with something more modern. Such a task is relatively easy, and you need not possess the skills of a trained electrician. 3. Add molding for a finishing touch. Dress up spaces with crown molding or a decorative chair rail that goes around a room. You can even use molding to frame new or existing artwork. Find a molding style that complements the architectural style.

To Increase Home Fire Safety

An average of seven Americans die each week as a result of house fires. Most fires occur in residential buildings between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., when occupants are most likely to be asleep. Your first line of defense is fire preparedness. Here’s five things you can do to increase your chance of survival in a fire:

• Install smoke alarms on every story of your home and outside sleeping areas. Be sure to test them monthly, clean them every six months and replace batteries in spring and fall. Having working fire alarms can cut your chance of dying in a fire in half! • Have a fire escape plan for your family and practice it. A small fire can spread rapidly — you may only have minutes or seconds to escape. When going over the details of your escape plan, check windows and doors to ensure all open easily. Know your local emergency number (911). Never stop to gather belongings or reenter a home after safely outside.

• When renovating, consider using fire-rated, noncombustible products. Your choice of insulation, for example, can be vital. Stone

Fire Prevention Week October 8 - Saturday, October 14

wool insulation, like that produced by Roxul, resists temperatures up to approximately 2,150 F. When directly exposed to fire, it will not off-gas, contribute to toxic smoke or promote flames. Fire-resistant building materials can give you extra time to escape when seconds count. • Purchase a multi-use fire ladder for each bedroom in your home and practice using it. A fire ladder may be your only escape option if flames block critical exits. • Place fire extinguishers on every level of your home, especially in high-risk areas like the kitchen, near fireplaces and in the garage. Use only for small, contained fires that are not spreading rapidly. Know how to operate your extinguisher before an emergency occurs using the PASS method: Pull pin, Aim low, Squeeze lever and Sweep from side to side. The safest option is always to evacuate your home and call for help.

Winterizing 101

Fall Home Section I 2017

C

How to prepare your yard for winter hanging seasons can be tough on a lawn. Always exposed to

the elements, lawns can fare especially poorly upon the arrival of winter, a

season known for its harsh and unforgiving weather. Even the most perfectly manicured lawn can suffer at the hands of winter weather, causing

homeowners to sit idly by and hope spring arrives that much sooner.

But as punishing as winter weather can be on a lawn, homeowners are not without recourse. Much like homeowners can take steps to help their lawns survive sizzling summer heat waves during the warmer months of the year, they also can take steps to help their lawns make it through the often stormy weather synonymous with winter. * Don't procrastinate. Putting off the process of winterizing a lawn can put that lawn in jeopardy. Lawns will turn dormant the closer you get to winter, and they may reject the

nutrients found in fertilizer as a result. Those nutrients will prove valuable once spring weather returns, so start the winterization process in early fall so the lawn has sufficient time to absorb nutrients and strengthen itself for the seasons to come. * Treat trouble spots. Summer can be even harder on a lawn than winter, especially for those lawns located in regions where heat waves and drought are common. In such instances, certain spots on the lawn seem to be hit harder than others, and those spots should get special attention when winterizing the lawn. Check the soil's pH levels before fertilizing or applying any treatments. Such a test will reveal which spots need the most attention, and treating trouble spots now will make spring lawn care that much easier. * Aerate the property. Aerating can help a lawn recover after a long summer and help it survive the potentially harsh months that lie ahead. Aerating, which involves puncturing the soil or removing cores of soil from the ground, can restore a lawn to health by improving its drainage and allowing more water and air to reach the roots of the grass. Aerating also makes it easier for nutrients to penetrate the soil, which encourages a healthier lawn over the long haul. Aerators can be purchased or rented, but homeowners uncomfortable with the process may want to enlist a professional to tackle the job. Parents of small children who spend lots of time in the yard may need to aerate their lawn more than most, as heavy lawn traffic compresses the soil, a potentially harmful process that can be reversed via aeration.

* Take steps to strengthen the roots. Aerating promotes stronger roots, but homeowners might also want to find a winterizing product with potassium and phosphorous, both of which can strengthen roots. Different types of lawns will respond differently to certain winterizers, so discuss your options with a lawn care professional who can help you find the right fit for your property. * Remove debris from the lawn. Debris left on a lawn over the winter can prove very harmful. Piles of debris left scattered around a lawn can suffocate the blades of grass, leading to long-term damage and a potentially unsightly lawn come the spring.

In addition, piles of debris might make good homes for organisms that can damage the lawn. As fall moves into winter, periodically remove all debris, including leaves and branches fallen from trees. * Make the lawn off-limits once the temperatures dip below freezing. A lawn should be off-limits once the ground freezes. Stepping on grass that has frozen will leave noticeable footprints, and walking on frozen grass can kill the turf. When winter arrives, people should avoid using the lawn as a shortcut into and out of your home and stick to driveways and sidewalks instead. FH139451

Items to improve outdoor living spaces

COMMUNITY SHOPPERS GUIDE...OTSEGO, MI 49078....Fall Home Section...October 21, 2017 ....Phone 694-9431

Fall Home Section I 2017

The popularity of outdoor living spaces has been growing for years. A 2014 study from the home remodeling and design platform Houzz found that 56 percent of homeowners were making updates to improve their yards for entertaining. Similarly, nearly 60 percent of architectural practices surveyed by the American Institute of Architects in 2016 said outdoor living spaces were popular features in the homes they built. Outdoor living spaces may also be sound investments for homeowners looking to improve the resale value of their properties. According to Remodeling magazine’s 2017 “Cost vs. Value report, outdoor living spaces returned between 55 and 71 percent of homeowners’ initial investments at resale.

When planning an outdoor living space, homeowners with ample backyards have much to work with. However, to make the most of the space while simultaneously hoping to get as strong a return on their investments as possible, homeowners should look to create spaces that offer broad appeal and are not too personalized. The following are some popular outdoor living space features homeowners may want to consider.

Outdoor kitchens allow homeowners to prepare more than just traditional backyard barbecue fare. A standalone charcoal grill in the backyard might get the job done, but a built-in gas grill complete with burners and surrounding granite countertop makes for a more functional outdoor entertaining space. Bars Indoor entertaining areas often include bars, so it makes sense that homeowners want to include a place to prepare and serve beverages to their guests. Homeowners with room in their budgets may want to install wet bars where they can rinse mixers, glasses and other items needed to prepare drinks for their guests.

Warming features Features that can keep homeowners and their guests warm after the sun sets include outdoor fireplaces and firepits. A 2016 survey conducted by the American Society of Landscape Architects found that fireplaces and firepits were the most popular outdoor design element in 2016. Such features can provide a focal point in the backyard while also extending the outdoor living season into autumn and even early winter. Porch space Outdoor living spaces are often found in the backyard, but homeowners with bigger front yards than backyards may want to expand or open their porch spaces to create more space outside. Porch swings and rocking chairs provide a great place to relax, and porch spaces are covered, meaning homeowners can continue to enjoy time outside even when it begins to rain. Outdoor living spaces are growing in popularity. Homeowners who want to capitalize on this trend can do so in various ways. FH178264

How to invite more natural light into your home

Fall Home Section I 2017

A dark home can be dreary and drain residents' energy levels rather quickly. Natural light has the power to make a person feel more energized, and it also can buoy spirits. As a result, many homeowners want to increase the amount of natural light in their homes. Increasing natural sunlight in a home reduces reliance on interior lighting. This reduces energy bills and lowers the home's carbon footprint. Natural light also can help people in a home feel happier and more content.

According to the National Institutes of Health, some people experience serious mood changes during the winter months. Dubbed seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, this condition may be effectively treated with light therapy. Exposure to more light can alleviate fatigue, loss of interest and sad or anxious feelings. Homeowners looking to increase the natural light in their homes, be it for medical or aesthetic reasons, can do so in a variety of ways. * Keep the drapes open. Opening blinds and curtains as far as they will go allows as much light to shine in without having to do major home renovations or spend any money at all. Homeowners concerned about privacy can install a window film that allows viewing from the inside only. * Clean the windows. Dirty windows obstruct sunlight from entering the home. They also can make a home appear unkempt. Spend a free day cleaning the windows so that they'll let ample light in. * Install seamless or low-profile windows

and doors. Seamless sliding doors enable a large amount of light to enter the home. Such doors can replace an entire wall to brighten up a dark area of a home. The more windows and doors a home has, the brighter it will be.

* Take inventory of dark spots. A room may be dark because it simply does not have a layout conducive to brightness. Is a wall blocking light from reaching a portion of the room? Think about changing the room's layout or even making structural changes to improve light distribution. The addition of a small window on a south- or west-facing wall can greatly improve natural light. Using mirrors can also reflect light where it is needed.

the house and keep it cooler, while in winter more sun will stream in when the leaves are shed. * Create a three-season room. Make a spot in the home where sun will be at a premium. A solarium or greenhouse attached to the home can be a warm and sunny spot.

Increasing natural light in a home can improve feelings of well-being and also reduce energy consumption during daylight hours.

Broken or Fogged Windows?

* Invest in skylights or solar tubes. Both skylights or solar tubes enable light to enter a home from above. Skylights are larger and require considerably more work to install, while solar tubes are more low-profile and can be put into rooms that do not abut the roofline, such as those obstructed by attic space. The tubular cylinders are installed between the roof and the ceiling and carry light through a reflective tube to the room below. Diffusers on tubular daylighting devices scatter the rays so the light doesn't cast harsh shadows, and UV filters can help protect furniture from discoloring. * Trim shrubs and trees. If trees and bushes are blocking light from entering your home, trim them to enable dappled light to come through. Deciduous trees that will naturally lose their leaves come autumn can be planted on sunny areas of the property. This way in the summer months they will shade

Expect the unexpected when renovating a home

Fall Home Section I 2017

According to projections released in 2015 by Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies, a growing number of people in the United States planned to renovate their homes in 2016. The report estimated that spending on remodeling and repairs in 2016 would climb 8.6 percent to $310 billion, a figure that is close to the peak reached in 2006. While it is still too soon to tabulate all of the figures from 2016, a quick glance at the data indicates renovations have increased across the country. And one only need travel through communities to see a greater number of contractors and homeowners working on homes. Tackling any renovation project is an exercise in patience. Renovations can impede on daily activities and cause a certain level of upheaval in homeowners’ lives. Homeowners planning renovations also may find that they must have some wiggle room when it comes to both their budgets and their expectations. Remodeling, particularly with regard to older homes, may unveil unforeseen issues that only arise in the face of the renovation. So what can homeowners expect during a renovation? The following are a few issues that might arise during home improvement projects. • Dirt and noise: Homeowners can count on dust, debris and noise throughout the renovation process. Dust appears when walls come down or go up, and construction teams typically erect temporary walls or tarps to contain the debris. Air filtering systems also can limit dust particles. Noise is unavoidable. If it becomes troublesome, arrange to be outside of the home when the bulk of the construction is taking place. • Delays or schedule changes: Even the best contractors cannot control every aspect of the job. They rely on subcontractors and vendors to do portions of the work. Materials

may not always arrive on time, or they may fall short of homeowners’ expectations. This can push back the project schedule. Homeowners should hope for everything to be done on time, but it can be less stressful if homeowners anticipate delays and be a pleasant surprise if there are no delays. • Hidden issues: Contractors may uncover all sorts of issues that need to be addressed before a project can progress. Examples include the presence of asbestos (common in older homes), plumbing problems, incorrectly wired electrical systems, and leaks or moisture issues. These problems also can impact the cost of the project, so set aside some money in the budget for unforeseen expenses. Chances are you are going to need some extra money to handle a few surprises during the project. It’s important to expect the unexpected when embarking on home renovations. Budgeting for hidden costs, expecting delays and coping with the upheaval to daily schedules are par for the remodeling course. However, the end result is often well worth the time and effort.

Homeowners often discover hidden problems when delving into renovations. Budgeting for remediation can help remove some of the stress of unexpected delays and concerns

Faith

“IS IT ENOUGH TO BELIEVE?” By Rev. Dan Minor - revdminor@att.net _____________________________________

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” - John 3:16

Belief in Jesus Christ is the golden thread of the Bible. It is the main theme of John’s account of the gospel. It is the very heart of the good news (John 3:l6). But is belief enough? Apparently not, because “… even the devil believes and trembles” (James 2:19). Some say it is not what you believe but how you live your life that is important. That is simply not true, because what you believe determines how you live your life. If it were enough to simply believe, there would be no such things as the church, the Bible, Christian witness or service. True belief is faith lived out.

I cannot remember a time when I did not believe. However, my belief in God has shaped my life. I was raised in a home where the Bible was preached, where prayer was heard, where love was shared and where we were taught to consider the needs of others.

The Bible says “… God is love” (I John 4:8). I have seen God’s love in my marriage, my family, through the church and friendships. The point is for every belief there must be a corresponding action.

Examples from the Bible: “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works …” (Ephesian 2:l0) “Work out your salvation with fear and trembling” (Philippians 2:12) “As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead” (James 2:26) Thus, the question is not what we believe, but how our faith is being lived out in daily living.

Prayer: Dear Lord, I believe. Help me to show my love for you by the way I live my life. ALAMO VOTERS

You are being asked for a LARGE TAX HIKE on Tuesday, November 7 for the Township's Fire Department. Here are some facts you should consider: 1. The Township Board has $1,633,085 of your money presently sitting in the Bank receiving little interest. $830,376 is totally unrestricted (per 2017 Audit Report).

2. The board has not studied or compiled a written plan on what and how they will spend this tax windfall.

3. The Fire Department, after repeated requests by citizens, has failed to lower our township insurance rating, saving taxpayers an average of $300 to $500 annually on their own fire insurance. Neighboring Townships have saved residents millions in lower premiums. It is as simple as filling out a few forms and testing the existing fire department equipment. ~Paid for by the Committee for Responsible Taxation~
