Ann P WELLS AGE 100 MARTIN MI

Ann P Wells, age 100, of Mar tin, Michigan, passed away on Tuesday, October 18, 2022 Ann, the daughter of the Jacob and Anna (Siegfried) Rickli, graduated from Martin High School in 1941 She married Harold Wells on April 6 1945 at Alexandria Air Force Base in Louisiana

After Harold was discharged, they spend a short time in Grand Rapids and Wayland before settling in Martin where they raised their two Children Ann worked at JCPenney Company for over 20 years She left Penny’s when Harold retired so they could travel Ann is survived by her two children: Laura Happ and Jim (Sherlene) Wells; four grandchildren: Megan (Ron nie) West, Joel Happ, Emily Wells and Jay Wells; three great grandchildren; four siblings: Jacob Rickli, Martha Shoemaker, Norma Cribbs and Jim Rickli, as well as several nieces and nephews She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings: Walt Rickli, Alice Mc Caffery, Dorothy Levitt Ann attended the Martin United Methodist Church and was involved in blood drives, the Lion’s Club and loved her work at JCPenney She loved polkas and has been known to do a little polka when the music came on She enjoyed playing cards and doing puzzles Ann had a smile for everyone

“PERSISTENCE IN PRAYER”

(Parable of the Friend at Midnight) Luke 11:5 13

Does God hear our prayers? How many times must we pray for something? Does God ever get tired of hear ing from us?

The Psalmist said, “O God, do not keep silent; be not quiet, O God, be not still” (Psalm 83:1) In Lamentations 3:44 we read, “You have covered yourself with a cloud so that no prayer can get through ”

In the Parable of the Fr iend at Midnight (Luke 11:5 13), Jesus teaches us to be persistent in prayer Jesus told the stor y about a man who had an unexpected guest at midnight, but did not have bread to feed him So he went to a neighbor fr iend asking for help At first the neighbor refused but, because of his persistence, he got up and helped him

I remember an older saintly lady in my hometown c h u r c h w h o p raye d fo r m a ny ye a r s fo r t h e conversion of her grandson She never tired of praying for him She lived to see the answer to her prayers One night a visiting evangelist gave the call to receive Chr ist and her grandson went forward, knelt at the altar and received Chr ist as his Savior and Lord

Persistence in prayer is not for the pur pose of getting God to remember our needs It is for the pur pose of getting closer to God We recall the stor y of how Jacob wrestled with an angel all night long He prayed, “I will not let you go until you bless me” (Genesis 32:26) God came to him and changed his name to Israel “because you have str uggled with God and with men and have overcome” (Genesis 32:28)

God does not always give what we ask for but what we need For example, Apostle Paul prayed three times that God would remove his thor n in the flesh And God said to him, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Cor inthians 12:7 9)

God is more willing to answer our prayers than we are to ask So, keep on praying, keep on believing and keep on tr usting God will answer your prayers in God’s time and in God’s way

Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to be persistent in our prayers and tr ust You for the results In Your strong name Amen

It is election time and candidate ads like this one are showing up on every page of this paper. After reading them all I am left with more than a few questions.

• Multiple candidates believe in “transparency.” What does that mean in relation to a Cit y Commission b ody that already complies with the Open Meetings Act of 1976? Meetings are open to the public and individuals have a right to ask questions at two different points during meetings Communication with our residents can always be improved. Social media posts, more frequent newsletters, paid ads in the Shoppers Guide or the Union Enterprise; how can the cit y better communicate with you? What is each candidate suggesting?

• All candidates agree the city should have a balanced budget. What we do not ag ree on is how to get there Keeping in mind that proper ty tax revenue peaked in 2009 and State Statutory Revenue Sharing has been declining at an increasing rate from year to year since 2001 what changes does each candidate propose to make this happen?

• Some candidates promise to stop “wasteful spending.” Have they provided examples of this spending? What if you feel the areas they propose to reduce are impor tant to you or the cit y as a whole? What services and amenities make up a place where you want to live?

The City Commission candidates will be answering questions from a moderator and the public Tuesday, October 25th from 6 pm to 7:30 pm at the Otsego Historical Museum. I encourage you to see what we all have to say as we answer your questions.
