AN APPEAL TO THE CITIZENS OF THE CITY OF OTSEGO

I came to teach in our wonderful school distr ict in 1973 I came to live here in 1980 I ser ved on var i ous city boards for over 35 years, including 15 years on the Otsego City Commission (2003 2018) I had the honor of ser ving as Mayor of Otsego for seven years from 2009 to 2016 I lear ned a lot over those years about myself and the City of Otsego My exper iences were overwhelmingly positive even in difficult times Unfor tunately Diana and I had to move out of the city last year because of cer tain health issues, but in ever y impor tant way, Otsego will always be our hometown because of all the ways we’ve been blessed while we were residents We remain interested in Otsego’s continued success

The city is in a good place: an excellent city manager ; a wonderful, welcoming city hall staff (which was that way the first time I happened to come to city hall almost 50 years ago led by Jane Tice and it’s never changed), Depar tment Heads who are exper ts at what they do, Police and Fire Depar tments who are well trained and are committed to ser ving our residents One thing I found ver y comfor ting dur ing my 15 years on the commission: a clean audit prepared ever y year by our long time City Treasurer Matt Storbeck The repor t by the auditor was always shor t: ”Keep doing what you’re doing I have no suggestions for improvements ”

There were ver y few conflicts between city commission members: we lear ned to wor k together when an issue arose We generally respected each other (thank goodness we were non par tisan, one of the great benefits of small city gover nments)

HOWEVER: 2022 has not been a typical year for Otsego and its commission You will be electing all five city commissioners on November 8th instead of the usual two or three . It star ted with the tragic and unexpected death of our excellent Mayor Cyndi Trobeck followed shor tly by the unexpected resignation of Commissioner Dustin McNees The three remaining commission members asked for interested people to apply and two ver y capable citizens did: Chuck Moore and Jason Smith, and they were appointed. They wor ked well and showed respect for their colleagues. They did their homewor k, and the few times I’ve seen them together things are r unning smoothly They do not need big changes this November, as they will have at least one more new member because Commissioner Brent Milheim decided not to r un for re election

You will be looking at essentially two races for city commission The regular one for three seats where the two candidates receiving the most votes will receive four year ter ms and the third highest vote get ter will receive a two year ter m There will be five candidates on this par t of the ballot

The second par t of the race will be for two year terms to complete the terms of the late Cyndi Trobeck and Commissioner Dustin McNees I hope that Jason Smith & Wayne Rayburn are elected to finish those terms. There will be three candidates on this par t of the ballot.

A good city commission should have commissioners who wor k well together and respect each other I believe that the ballot you will see has the r ight people to do that I hope you will reelect Mayor Stacey Withee who brought the commission together at the sad passing of Cyndi Trobeck I also hope you will reelect Laur i Kr ueger to her seat she is a ver y effective commissioner, and Chuck Moore who was appointed ear lier this year

I know all five of these people All are ethical, moral people without any axes to gr ind, only the inter est to make the city better If you elect these five candidates, you will have a ver y stable commission

One other thing is essential for a positive , successful commission. They must come with the desire to ser ve Otsego’s residents, not themselves They should come without any grievances from the past. Because of past experiences with the three candidates we did not recommend, we are not confident they could or would fulfill those requirements.

My name is Stacey Withee and I have had the g reat honor of serving the citizens of Otsego as a city commissioner since 2017. I have been your mayor since the trag ic passing of Cyndi Trobeck in March of this year

I am of g raduate of Otsego High School and Western Michigan University Since 2015, I have been employed as a controller by M&K Truck Centers which allows me to use my extensive accounting experience daily. My education and experience make me professionally qualified to understand the City’s budget and the challenges it repre sents I star ted attending City Commission meetings in 2011 to better understand how our city is funded and what services a city provides to its residents One of the first things I learned was that our budget is actually a series of different budgets, each with its own revenue source and governed by specific rules on how it can operate.

I bought my house in the City of Otsego because I was searching for a home where I could walk my dog, recognize my neighbors and be par t of a community You may not recognize my name, but you may have seen me walking my big white dog, Murphy, or volunteering at a local event. I have volunteered extensively with Otsego Main Street as a committee member and at many events including every Gus Macker tournament, Shop Small Saturday, Steins and Vines, Breakfast with Santa, and others

A successful community is one where people want to live and work. I am dedicated to moving Otsego forward as we work to facilitate the development of affordable housing, streng then our downtown business corridor and manufacturing base and remove environmental contaminants along the Kalamazoo River which inhibit its use

Ever y pastor can tell stor ies about excuses people give for not going to church They fall under the heading “I would go to church, but ” Here are a few examples: “I don’t like the pastor” “I don’t like the music” “The people aren’t fr iendly” or “There are too many hypocr ites in the church ” There is a difference between an excuse and a reason We give excuses when we do not want to do something A reason is different Those who find themselves shut in have a reason for not going to church Many, for health reasons, must stay away from crowds Thank God for technology! Now we can worship in the comfor t of our homes on Sunday mor ning and feel that we are a par t of the worship ser vice

One of my personal joys as a pastor was visiting in the homes of the people I called it “taking the church to people One such person commented, “The only time we see the church is when you walk through our front door!”

There is a deeper reason for connecting with God spir itual hunger Jesus said that coming to God is like coming to supper It means nour ishment, joy and fellowship In Luke l4:15 24 we read the stor y of Jesus’ parable of The Great Supper He told how a man prepared a great supper He invited his fr iends to eat with him but they all gave excuses for not coming They gave good excuses but not one of them gave a good reason In Jesus’ time to refuse hospitality was a ser ious insult

Others, with great need, came to the supper They included “The poor, the cr ippled, the blind and the lame” (Luke 14:21) Jesus said “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled” (Matthew 5:6)

William Barclay the great Bible commentator paraphrased it this way: “How much do you want goodness? Do you want it as much as a star ving man wants food, and as much as a man dying of thirst wants water?

The good news is that the invitation is still open In the parable the ser vant said to the host, “ ‘what you ordered has been done, but still there is room’ (Luke 14:22)

There is still room for us at God’s table The only question is whether or not we are hungr y enough

Goldie Hyder Cosgrove passed away peacefully at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo Goldie was born April 12, 1934 in Livingston, KY, the daughter of Felix and Ethel (Langford) Brock She moved to Plainwell as a child, graduating from Plainwell High School She attended Ferris State University studying business and worked in her husband’s pharmacy, Parchment Pharmacy She was united in marriage to Dale Hyder on May 8, 1953 at the Plainwell First Baptist Church Sadly, Dale passed away in 1994 Goldie was blessed to find love a second time when she met Royce Cosgrove, whom she married June 1, 1996 Goldie was a member of Plainwell First Baptist Church for many years, was active at the senior center and was dedicated to her exercise regimen She loved camping, reading, gardening and playing sudoku but most of all enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren Goldie is survived by her three children Julie (Dennis) Goodwin, Rebecca (Dave) Goricki, and Laura (Todd) LaBonne; Royce’s two children, Jeff (Julie) Cosgrove and Anne (Gary) Delger; 13 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren with 3 on the way; two sisters, June (late Don) Burge, Thelma (Jim) Rohrer; numerous nieces and nephews She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Dale, in 1994 and her second husband Royce Cosgrove A celebration of her life was held Thursday, October 27, 2022 at First Baptist Church of Plainwell Goldie was laid to rest at Hillside Cemetery, Plainwell following the service While visiting Goldie's webpage (listed below) please sign the guestbook by lighting a candle, and/or sharing a memory with the family Memorial donations may be made in Goldie's memory to Centrica Care Navigators or First Baptist Church of Plainwell

at the age of 83 Born on November 26, 1938, in Plainwell, Michigan, Ed was the son of Edgar Sr and Hazel Haffner

was a 1957 graduate of Plainwell High School and furthered his education by attending Western Michigan University where he received his bachelor’s degree in physics Ed worked for many years with Franklin Electric, then with Dekko Heating Technologies as an engineer On August 20, 1960, Ed was united in marriage to his sweetheart, Bonnie Kneprath The two shared 62 years together Ed was very handy and a natural teacher Being an engineer, he enjoyed taking things apart and learning how they were constructed He taught friends and family how those things worked He also had a love for the out doors, going hunting and camping Most of all, Ed loved his family Spending time with family, especially with his kids and grandkids, was a true joy in his life

Those who survive with broken hearts include his wife, Bonnie; children, Becky (Hank) Pernicka, Jeffrey (John Mesta) Haffner, Jon Haffner, Joel (Sarah) Haffner, and Brenda Haffner; eight grandchildren; one great grand child; sisters, Barbara Nichols, Marian Swope, Virginia Glück, and Billy (Anna) Haffner; and two half sisters, Ruth Ann and Grace Haffner He is further survived by many extended family members and friends He was preceded in passing by his brothers, Robert Haffner, Kenneth Haffner, John “Jack” Haffner, and Richard “Dick” Haffner The Life Celebration Service was held on Saturday, October 22 with Titus Funeral Home’s Sharon Brockhaus officiating

Linda Louise (Cole) Schacher passed away at her home in Otsego on Oc tober 10, 2022 She was born to Norman and Mar garet (Addison) Cole on March 11, 1933 in Bluefield, Virginia She graduated from Stuart Hall in Staunton, Vir ginia, and went on to study architecture at Ohio State University It was there that she met her future husband, Thomas E Schacher II, a World War II veteran and law student They were mar ried on June 28, 1953 in Springville, Virginia Linda de voted herself to being a caring wife, homemaker, and loving mother In 1968, she, along with her husband and two young children, moved to a small “gentleman’s farm” in Ortonville, Michigan, where she would live for the next 43 years There she enjoyed her horses, goats, dogs, and cats, as well as gardening and teaching swimming lessons in the pond She became quite ac complished in a variety of arts and crafts, including knitting, crocheting, basketry, and painting, and even taught classes for several years In 2011, having been widowed in 2007, she moved to be near her son’s fam ily in Otsego, where she enjoyed taking care of her yard, feeding and watching the birds and squirrels, and watching just about any sport on TV, especially her beloved Buckeyes She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her daughter Susan She will be missed by her brother Norman Cole Jr , son Thom, his wife Katherine, her grandchildren Nate Schacher, Beth (Schacher) Carroll, Svetlana (Schacher) Belleau (daughter of Susan), and her two great grandchildren A private family burial of ashes will take place at noon on November 5 at Ortonville Cemetery

passed away suddenly on Tuesday October 11, 2022, in Traverse City She was the daughter of Gary and Sandy Zantello Terri was born on July 27, 1964, on her Mom’s Birthday, which made her the best Birthday gift her mom every received Terri and her Mom Sandy, took great Joy in sharing their birthdates Terri was the best daughter a parent could ask for, a born leader, even when growing up she was always ready to take charge, from playing Mother May I to playing School Her first Childhood friend was Lisa Benedict When little, Terri, nicknamed herself “T” She was full of ingenuity, and very decisive and always a joy to have around Terri was an excellent student in grade school, and an honor roll student in Middle and High School In 1982 Terri was inducted in to the National Honor Society That year, she graduated from Otsego High School After graduation Terri went to Davenport College for a year and landed a great job, even while working she contin ued taking night classes until she earned her degree In college, Terri enrolled in a photography class, and a love for taking pictures was born Terri loved taking na ture and wild animal pictures and they were beautiful She was very talented Her best photos she put on canvas and she used them to decorate her home She also used some of them for some beautiful Christmas Cards Terri loved big cities She moved to Chicago, where she spent 10 years living a life she loved While living in Chicago, Terri belonged to the Chicago film Critics As a member, Terri was fortunate to meet some big stars, which she found very exciting Terri left Chicago and moved back to Pine Lake where her fam ily celebrated her return with a College graduation party for the ages While living there, Terri met her Partner of 26 years Brad Eventually they moved to Traverse City and began a company called The “2” Buds Al ways the overachiever, Terri started 2 more successful companies called “Rhine Designs” and “Shirtcetera” All of this was accomplished while working full time for Janco in Traverse City Growing up with horses, cats and dogs, Terri was an avid animal lover Not too long ago, she even rescued a baby squirrel Terri loved her cats, Cloe and Daisy She took great joy in watching the birds in her bird feeders, relaxing on her deck after a long day at work Terri was an amazing cook, she grew her own spices and peppers and was very at home in the kitchen creating some wonderful Italian and Mexican dishes She made the best Salsa!
