Why is it? A man wakes up after sleeping on an advertised mattress, brushes his teeth with advertised toothpaste, shaves with advertised razor, puts on advertised clothes, drinks advertised coffee and eats advertised cereal, drives to work in an advertised car... and then refuses to advertise... believing that it doesn’t pay. Later... if his business is poor, he advertises it for sale. Why is it? We Haul, we do it all. No job too big, no job too small. Just give us a call. Have saw will fall, any nuisance tree. FALL HOME SECTION I 2015
Leaves cascading down from trees indicate the arrival of autumn. However, colorful and awe-inspiring autumn leaves can be a hazard if left to lie on the ground too long. Fallen leaves form a dense insulator to protect trees’ roots and prevent competing plants from growing. Decomposing leaves also provide nutrients for the tree. But wet leaves can be a safety hazard and leaves left on the lawn through the winter can pose a threat to the grass. These are just a couple of reasons why so much effort is placed on leaf clean-up in the fall. The following are some creative ways to recycle leaves that fall from your trees in the weeks to come. • Mulch: Shredded leaves can make for a great amendment to fertilizer for garden beds and even the lawn. Leaves lying on the grass can be mulched into small pieces with a mulching mower so they don’t choke the blades of grass. Leaves also can be broken down with a string trimmer, a leaf blower that has a vacuum function or a commercial shredder/chipper. Add the shredded leaves to a compost pile or use them to fill container plants before adding regular potting soil. • Insulation: Collect leaves to mound over delicate perennial plants and shrubs. The leaves will add more warmth to the soil and may help plants make it through harsh winters. Just remove the leaves slowly when spring arrives so that the soil underneath can get the sunlight and water it needs to thrive. Leave some leaves in the yard so that animals can use them as nesting material and line their dens for the winter. • Stuffing: Create whimsical scarecrows as
Switching to LED Bulbs is Becoming More Affordable and Appealing
(StatePoint) The use of LED bulbs in homes is on the rise nationwide, and with good reason. Not only are they more energy efficient than their traditional counterparts, LEDs are becoming more affordable upfront. Indeed, of the United States’ four billion residential light bulb sockets, less than 10 percent are filled with LED lighting; but by 2020, more than 50 percent will be LED, according to industry estimates. This year alone, the consumer lighting market is anticipated to more than double with LED, while traditional CFL bulb usage is expected to decrease. LED is not a new technology and has been on the market for years. So what is driving this sudden consumer shift? New light bulb designs are making these cost-efficient bulbs more convenient, attractive and affordable. In fact, certain designs retail as low as under $10 for a three-pack of bulbs. For example, GE Lighting's new Bright Stik bulb’s slender, sleek design is offered both in soft white and daylight, and fits in more sockets and fixtures compared to its general purpose CFL bulb counterpart. It has a rated life of 15,000 hours and should last nearly 14 years, at a cost of 10 cents per month based on three hours of operation daily and 11 cents per kilowatt hour. Designed to be a good alternative to general purpose replacement CFL bulbs, the Bright Stik can be used anywhere, from sockets found in basements, sheds, and garages to table and floor lamps, adding up to substantial energy savings over time. These bulbs are available in-store at The Home Depot or by visiting www.HomeDepot.com. To learn more about innovations in LED lighting, get lighting tips for any room of the house, or to find out how much you stand to save making the simple swap, visit gelighting.com/LightingWeb/na/consumer/. You don’t need to be a skilled handyman to make an important, planet-friendly home upgrade that will save your family time and money for years to come. This weekend, consider trading in your traditional bulbs for a more modern variety.
part of your autumn decoration scheme. Gather older clothes that you no longer use and stuff the sleeves of shirts and the legs of pants with leaves, which are less expensive and easier to come by than straw. Use a few pieces of straw around the neck and hand areas of the scarecrow for visual effect. Tie off with twine and display your scarecrow. • Bedding: Chicken owners can use fallen leaves as bedding in their chicken coops. Dry leaves also may create more comfortable and drier conditions for goats and other livestock. Goats may look to recently fallen leaves as a nutritious food source. Gather the leaves and let the goats munch before you further rake and compost the leaves. • Decorations: Natural leaves can be used as decorations both inside and outside a home.
String freshly fallen leaves together and wrap them around a grapevine wreath for a rustic door decoration. Leaves can be placed in clear vases and put on display for a cheap way to showcase some autumn color. Preserve favorite leaves with a lamination machine or by sealing them between heated sheets of waxed paper. Cut out the leaf shapes and use for hanging window decorations. • Recreation: Leaves have long been favorite toys for children, who eagerly await jumping into large piles of fallen leaves. Fill paper bags with leaves and draw a target on the front. Let kids test their skill aiming for the targets. Children can camouflage their clothing with leaves and masking tape and have a more intense session of “hide and seek.”

Consider fiberglass entry doors from Therma-Tru Corp, which have embraced different architectural trends in its current offerings.
Designer glass accents in doorlites and sidelites provide contrast and warmth, enhancing the entryways of Craftsman-, Prairie-, Bungalow- and Arts and Craftsstyle homes.
(StatePoint) Adding the right design elements to your home can complete what its architecture hopes to accomplish. But knowing just what to incorporate to complement -- rather than detract -- from the style of your home can present a challenge.
LANDSCAPE OFFERS
For example, those who’ve embraced the recent resurgence of bungalows, Arts and Crafts-, Mission- and Prairie-style homes will want to ensure that they maintain the simplicity and warmth of their building’s construction when making upgrades.

Luckily, many manufacturers offer home products to match a wide variety of styles. If you have such a home design and are looking to make improvements, here are some ideas to think about:
RESIDENTIAL HOUSING • BUSINESS • NURSING HOMES • HOTELS
MATERIALS Maintain the rustic feel of your home without sacrificing modern performance by seeking out manmade products that mimic nature. Energy-efficient fiberglass entry doors have the look of real oak, while polymer shake roofing -- which looks like real wood but is made of high-performance

Likewise, consider adding silkscreened Mission and Prairie style windows, such as those from the Hy-Lite Home Designer Collection. Created from tempered privacy glass, they can match your home’s architectural style while offering privacy.

materials --- will resist deterioration, fire spread and fading from the sun.
Get the look of wooden trim, shutters, louvers and balustrade systems with easycare polyurethane products that require minimal upkeep, while resisting insects, decay and moisture. Brands like Fypon offer exterior accents, as well as textured millwork for the interior, such as easilystained crown mouldings and baseboards. STYLE Give a nod to your low-pitched roof and open eaves with perfect exterior accompaniments. After all, these are some of the first elements that visitors see.
COLOR Relaxed and refined, Craftsman style homes offer a variety of opportunities to welcome color. While simplicity is the hallmark of this design style, that doesn’t mean the colors have to be simple. Consider bright colors with contrasting white trim to add personality.
The roof offers a welcoming palette for starting “top down” color selections for the home. "Arts and Crafts style homes, as well as Bungalows, look great with the texture and color of a shake roof," says Kate Smith, chief color maven with Sensational Color.
Smith recommends a color palette that mimics nature, such as cedar, autumn or weathered gray hues from DaVinci Roofscapes, a brand that offers durable polymer roof products with the natural appearance of wood shake. When it comes to home upgrades, the choices you make should not happen arbitrarily. Look for product offerings that will unite your home's design style and appeal.

utumn is upon us, and with the change of seasons comes the fall to-do list that must be completed before the arrival of winter weather. Many outdoor jobs are best completed before temperatures drop, while others can be tackled indoors to help save energy and prepare for increased time spent inside the home.
Outdoor cleanup Autumn means leaves are falling from trees and littering landscapes. Cleaning up leaves can be a time-consuming task, but it’s necessary to promote the health of lawns

and other plants. Grass that is completely matted down with leaves can become starved for light and moisture, and lawns may even rot when forced to spend winter beneath fallen leaves. One eco-friendly timesaver is to shred leaves with a mower (a manual mower is preferable) and leave them as topdressing for the lawn. As long as the grass blades can be seen within the leaves, the lawn should be fine. Shredded leaves will decompose and add necessary nutrients and organic matter to the soil naturally. Leaves also can be used in annual flower and vegetable gardens to improve the soil. Mulch made from shredded leaves can be placed on the soil around trees and shrubs. This helps to reduce weed problems and protects root systems from harsh temperature fluctuations. Clothing donations It’s time to pack away summer clothing and once again fill closets and drawers with sweaters and jeans. Before packing away your summer wardrobe, conduct an inventory to determine if there are any items you no longer use. Donate these items or use them as rags when cleaning. Keep some short-sleeved shirts accessible so you can layer them under sweatshirts and sweaters. The heat from layering will be
trapped against your body and keep you cozier, reducing your reliance on HVAC systems to stay warm. Home repairs Check the roof for any missing shingles. In addition, look for spots where animals or insects may be able to gain entry into your home. Seal these areas and repair any leaks. This will make your home more efficient later on when winter hits its stride. Remove window air conditioners for the

Finding the right moisture balance in a home can be challenging. Too little moisture and a home can be plagued by static electricity and interior spaces that can feel dry and uncomfortable. But too much moisture in a home may make it susceptible to mold, mildew and insect infestations. Moisture also can rot wood and cause unsightly stains on walls and ceilings. Maintaining humidity in the optimal indoor range helps to keep the home safe, reduce energy consumption and keep a home’s occupants healthy. Damp conditions can lead to the growth of fungi, viruses and bacteria and may exacerbate people’s asthma and allergies. The ideal relative humidity range of a home should be between 40 to 50, according to heating and cooling experts and the Environmental Prevention Agency. Humidity should be even lower in the winter to prevent condensation on windows and other surfaces. Lower relative humidity also reduces the out-gassing of volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. Measure humidity with a hygrometer to get an accurate assessment. If the humidity levels fall above or below the desired range,
action should be taken. Homeowners dealing with excessive moisture can try these remedies.
• Ventilate areas of the home. Ventilation can be the first step to reducing indoor humidity. Target the areas that create the most moisture, such as kitchens and bathrooms. Turn on venting fans to remove moist air from the bathroom during showers and baths. Exhaust hoods can control humidity from cooking in the kitchen. When possible, open windows on dry days to help air out damp spaces.
have them repaired. Constantly dripping water can add to humidity levels and create other problems.
• Use a dehumidifier. If all other efforts have been tried, a dehumidifier unit can help remove excess moisture from the air. Dehumidifiers are particularly helpful in basements where moisture can collect. Controlling moisture in a home results in a safer and healthier space. FH158406

• Rely on fans. Use fans to circulate the air and prevent moist air from pooling in certain locations. Fans also will help increase ventilation. • Keep gutters and downspouts clean. Prevent water from pooling around the foundation of a home and infiltrating the basement or crawlspace. Direct gutter water further away from the house if possible, and keep gutters free of obstructions.
• Service HVAC systems regularly. Routine inspections of heating and cooling systems can identify any problems, such as clogged

The problem with hard water
COMMUNITY SHOPPERS GUIDE...OTSEGO, MI 49078....Fall Home Section...October 3, 2015 ....Phone 694-9431
FALL HOME SECTION I 2015
Home ownership opens people’s eyes to many new experiences, even requiring homeowners to familiarize themselves with certain things they never encountered as renters. Homeowners become novice plumbers, electricians, horticulturists, and even chemists as they wade through the projects and repairs involved with owning a home. Outside of high school chemistry class, you may never have given thought to water composition and how it changes. However, once you become a homeowner, you may have to pay special attention to the type of water bubbling out of your faucets. Hard water is a common concern, and it can affect appliances and other parts of the home.
What is hard water? Hard water affects about 85 percent of the United States, according to the Water Quality Association. Although not harmful to human health, hard water can impact one’s daily life in other ways. Hard water is formed when water moves through soil and rock. It dissolves very small amounts of minerals and holds them in a solution. Calcium and magnesium are the most common minerals to turn water “hard.” The more magnesium and calcium water dissolves, the harder it becomes. From nuisance to damaging Hard water can not only be a minor headache, but also something more serious. Hard water can interfere with various cleaning tasks and also personal grooming. Clothes washed in hard water may not be fully clean and may appear dingy. Hard water

can cause a film on surfaces, such as bath tiles and tubs. Some people find that their hair and skin can appear dull and sticky due to hard water. Hard water can have other effects, too. Over time, the water can deposit minerals on the inside of pipes, reducing water flow. If these deposits grow thick, you may have a plumbing issue on your hands. Furthermore, mineral deposits can harm appliances, such as water heaters, washing machines and dishwashers. Eventually, hard water may render these appliances ineffective, and they will need to be replaced.
Treatment options Considering hard water is such a common concern, a number of treatment options exist. The main types of water-softening systems use either a packaged water softener or a mechanical water-softening unit. Packaged water softeners are chemicals that bond with the calcium and magnesium ions in the water so that they cannot interfere with cleaning efficiency. These chemicals fall into two categories: precipitating and nonprecipitating. Precipitating softeners are borax and washing soda and can affect pH levels of water and make water cloudy. Nonprecipitating softeners use phosphates. Alkalinity won’t be increased, and usually there is no cloudiness or buildup. These products are typically added to laundry loads and the like and are not recommended for drinking water. Mechanical water-softening systems are hooked up directly to the plumbing of the house. They are ion-exchange systems that
will add salt to the water. Although it can be safe to drink, softened water may not be recommended for those who are on lowsodium diets.
Hard water is a problem many homeowners have to face. It can affect a home’s appliances’ performance and cleaning abilities. Water hardness can be managed, and it is best to consult with an expert watersoftening system manufacturer about your options. FH158404

ÂŞĂ—ĂĄĂ— The start of a new season is the perfect time to check some tasks off of your “to-doâ€? list — whether it’s to get in shape or tackle athome projects. If you’re planning on making some simple but effective changes at home, here are some tips on how to give your basement a total 180-degree makeover. Soundproof it Installing acoustic insulation is the perfect excuse to crank up the subwoofer, host a get-together or let the kids run wild. Soundproofing is the ultimate solution to maximize your basement’s peace, quiet and privacy. Industry experts suggest using Roxul Safe n’ Sound, which effectively absorbs sound and is easy to work with.
Out with the old, in with a floor Installing a new floor or updating the existing one can improve the overall comfort level and look of your basement. Many unfinished basements have basic concrete flooring, which is cold year-round. Flooring options are endless — hardwood, laminate, cork and Berber flooring all add warmth to a basement bedroom or TV room; play mats are great for kids’ playrooms; and carpets are perfect to make any room feel more comfy and welcoming.
Get creative with a fresh coat of paint Transform the dull and boring space into an inviting entertainment oasis or a colorful playroom with a simple coat of paint. When considering the paint, think about what color will compliment your existing furniture. To add some drama, consider adding depth and visual interest to your space with a different colored accent wall.
Accessorize it Throw pillows, rugs, lighting, and artwork are simple additions that can immediately enhance or change your basement’s look and feel. Pot lights can modernize, while art work and throw pillows can add a splash of color. Decide on a theme and color scheme for your room and keep your eye out for staple pieces that will make it feel like an entirely new space. unhealthy tree
Perhaps because they can live for so many years, trees have a way of falling down homeowners’ landscaping priority lists. Trees also tend to be big and strong, so it’s no surprise that they often are overlooked in favor or other areas of a lawn and garden that don’t seem so strong in the face of Mother Nature. But trees are susceptible to damage and disease, and homeowners who learn to recognize symptoms of such problems can prevent them from escalating and reduce the risk that the trees will cause damage to their properties. The following are just some of the ways homeowners can determine if their trees are unhealthy. Homeowners who suspect they have a tree that poses a safety risk should contact a professional tree service for an immediate inspection and steer clear of the tree until an inspection has been performed.
Unhealthy trees may need to be removed from a property before they cause significant damage.
• Check around the base of the tree. The base of a tree may offer some telltale signs that the tree is unhealthy. Soil that is cracked or raised at the base of the tree may be indicative of a tree that has started to uproot. If you recognize any cracking or if the soil is raised, look at the tree to see if it is leaning. If the soil is cracked or raised because it is uprooting, then the tree might have already started to lean in the opposite direction of the cracking or raised soil. • Examine for fungus. The growth of fungus on the tree trunk or close to it may be a sign that the tree is rotting or decaying. Fungal growth, such as a sudden population of mushrooms, around the base of the tree is another sign of decay. If the wood behind fungal growth crumbles easily, then homeowners should call a professional tree service, as the fungal problem on the tree has likely already been festering for quite some time. • Look for cavities on the trunk. Cracks and cavities on a tree may not be an emergency, but especially deep cracks and cavities may be indicative of a structural problem. Multiple cracks and cavities also serve as red flags. • Look for dead wood. It may sound simple, but dead wood poses a threat to the tree and anyone who happens to spend time in its vicinity. Dead wood snaps easily, and falling dead wood can harm anyone unlucky enough to be beneath the tree when the dead wood snaps. Dead wood branches won’t bend in the wind, and such branches frequently fall off of trees when strong gusts of wind come along. Dead branches either won’t have leaves or the leaves will be brown (dead pine branches will have brown needles).

• Weak connections. Unhealthy trees often have weak connections between their branches and their trunks. If branches don’t appear to be strongly connected to the tree bark, call a tree service to determine a solution. The tree might not be on its way out, but you may have to take steps to strengthen the connections so branches are not at risk of falling. Unhealthy trees can pose a significant safety hazard on a property. Homeowners who learn to recognize the signs of unhealthy trees can do something to prevent dying trees from damaging their homes. On behalf of Jim Hewitt's family
I want to express my sincere appreciation for all the support of the people who participated in Jim's Celebration of Life, during the event, behind the scenes, and all the people attending. What a beautiful tribute! The River Cities Concert Band was Jim's "baby" that he began and proudly conducted for 31 years. I especially appreciate your thoughtful donations to his organization. Jim poured his heart and soul into this group of musicians, and they played their instruments from their hearts! The (7) shared memory speakers: Walt Bauer, Ray Roth, Dennis Hanna, Tim Marsh, Judy Sabo, Mark Chapman, and Jay Miller spoke eloquently and from their hearts! Also Dave Hubbard, our present conductor of RCCB. The American Legion Post 84 and VFW Post 3030 I thank you for your participation, your continued support and love--we all know that Jim respected the veterans. Dave and Louise Hubbard for all your guidance, support and many kindnesses. Dan Bushouse - excellent speaker! Toothman Printing, thank you so much for the blown-up black and white picture of Jim that I framed and had on display on stage with Jim's instruments. Thank you all so much for making this tribute to Jim so meaningful.
Sincerely, Patti Hewitt

Tears are how our heart speaks, when our lips simply cannot find the words to describe the pain we feel.

Words of
Faith &Hope
“THERE GOES THE SERMON!”
“You are the light of the world…” – Matthew 5:14 It happened some time ago in a nearby community. A young boy and his father were at a local high school football game. The boy was young enough to be sitting on his dad’s shoulders. As they were walking through the crowd, the boy noticed their pastor (a colleague of mine) walking by. The young boy remarked to his father, “There goes the sermon!” The boy’s words remind me of the familiar words of Edgar Allen Poe, “I’d rather see a sermon than hear one any day …” It is said of Pope Francis, “He not only talks the talk; he walks the walk.” In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus said, “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:l4) and “You will know them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:20). The point: the Christian faith is more than a set of beliefs; it is a lifestyle. We are living sermons. This is what Apostle Paul meant when he said, “Let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Jesus Christ” (Philippians 1:27) Here is a poem (unknown source) entitled “The Gospel According to You” “You are writing a Gospel, a chapter every day, By the things that you do and the words that you say. Men read what you write – distorted or true, What is the gospel according to you?” Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to show your love by the words I say and by the life I live. Amen.

What is a husband? A husband is a man you really like and really love. He's the closest friend I ever had. His smile would make me smile, and just him being there would cheer me up, no matter what went wrong. My husband was that special man who shared my dreams and helped them come true. He gave special meaning to the beautiful word - together. It really never mattered where we went or what we were doing, as long as we had each other to share it all. I love him so much and miss him. ~Marshia
