U.S. Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Samuel J. Jenkins graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Jenkins is the son of Julia and Jeffrey Jenkins of Plainwell, Mich., brother of Rachel Sheffer of Del Rio, Texas, and grandson of Nancy and Bill Banks of Greenville, Mich., and Ronald and Kay Jenkins of Plainwell, Mich. He is a 2011 graduate of Homeschool, Plainwell, Mich. Team Plainwell; TeenServe 2015 is bringing approximately 350 teens and adults to Plainwell next June to improve the homes of local residents in Martin, Otsego and Plainwell. All work is free of charge. Elderly, handicapped, and lower income home owners are urged to apply. There is no catch. As many as 70 local homes will benefit from aprox 12,000 hrs of volunteer labor and more than $190,000 in free home repairs. Faith &Hope “SOUL GRIT”

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” – II Timothy 4:7 Our seasonal home is located in woods near a river, along with other cottages and surrounded by many oak trees. A fierce wind storm (80 mile per hour winds) came in recently and toppled several trees, and branches were strewn all over. Thankfully, no one was injured and there was no major damage to the cottages. It reminded me of one of Aesop’s fables as follows:

A mighty oak tree and humble reed, growing side by side on the edge of a river, fell into a conversation. Said the oak to the reed, “… you have no pride, you bend and bow to the lightest breeze. You should be tall and proud like me.” A fierce storm sprang up. The unbending oak stood firm for a while but eventually toppled into the river. But the reed sprang back to its original form and continued to grow by the side of the river.

Soul grit is the ability to bend without breaking. Resilience is another word for soul grit. The point … God gives us the strength to bounce back … to fight the good fight … to finish the race … to keep the faith. Soul grit … we all need it. Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to be like the reed by the river. Amen Peace to you and please join us for worship this Sunday in a church where Jesus’ love is lived.

Bern passed away Monday, September 29, 2014 at Wings Home in Allegan. Bud was born October 21, 1928 in Plainwell, MI, the son of Albert and Evon (Buhren) Warnement. Bud was a 1946 graduate of Plainwell High School. Following graduation he served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On July 1, 1950 in Otsego, Bud was married to Vivian J. Paddock. For many years Bud was the coowner of A.H. Warnement Farm Equipment and Repair in Plainwell, selling new and used farm equipment and working as a tractor mechanic. Bud served with the Plainwell Fire Department for several years and with Gun Plain Twp. Fire Department for over 65 years, serving as Chief and Assistant Chief. Bud also served as Gun Plain Twp. Trustee for 40 years. On April 2, 2014 he was honored with a certificate for “Outstanding Achievement” by the Gun Plain Twp. Board. He was a member of St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Otsego and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council # 7796. Survivors include his wife, Vivian; siblings, Joan Boniface of Delton, Louise Gates of Plainwell, Albert W. (Sally) Warnement of Sturgis and Paul Warnement of Delton; and many nieces and nephews. Bud was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Josephine; his parents and by his brothers Francis and Edward. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday, October 2, 2014 at St. Margaret Catholic Church, Otsego. Rev. Fr. Ted Martin officiated. Burial followed at St. Margaret’s Catholic Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Bud may be made to Wings of Hope, St. Margaret’s Catholic Church or to St. Margaret’s School. Carl W. “Red” SANDAHL AGE 85 – ALLEGAN, MI

Carl “Red” passed away Thursday, September 25, 2014 in Allegan. Mr. Sandahl was born June 6, 1929 in Watson Township to William and Ida (Erickson) Sandahl. Carl was an Allegan High School graduate who served his country in Air Force during the Korean War. Carl did some farming and for many years had worked at Mac Sim Bar/Mead/Rock Tenn until his retirement in 1995. In his leisure time he enjoyed square dancing, golfing, bowling, and lawn care. On April 5, 1952 in Allegan he married Maxine Thompson, who survives. Also surviving are his children, William (Laura) Sandahl of Scotts and Sharon (John) Sakal of Allegan; his 5 grandchildren, Tyler and Kelsey Sandahl and Becky, Jason and Joseph Sakal and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 2 sisters and 2 brothers-in-law, Viola (Gerald) Eckert and Esther (Robert) Crim; and his nephew, Ted Thompson. Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at Peace Lutheran Church of Otsego, Pastor Jason Thiel and Pastor Josh Olson officiated. Burial followed at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Contributions in memory of Carl may be made to Peace Lutheran Church of Otsego, Hospice of Holland or Briarwood Assisted Living of Allegan. Donald Augustus AGNE AGE 88 – PLAINWELL, MI

Don passed away September 23, 2014. He was one of eight children born to Augustus Wendellyn Agne and Lydia Angeline Agne. Don was born in Rockford, Ohio, where he began his journey through life. The decisions he made for the next eighty-eight years made him into the man so many of us loved, admired and respected. He was a gentle, quiet man of many talents. He served in the Army Air Corps after spending a year at Miami University in Ohio. When his service was completed, he returned to Miami where he met his love, Virginia Pitsenbarger. They were married in Versailles, Ohio on June 6, 1948. Their undying love for each other was a blessing for both of them; true and unconditional. His first job as a band director was in Eaton, Ohio. During the summer months he painted barns in the area. He took his growing family on to Hicksville, Ohio for another band director position and then to Plainwell, Michigan where he finished his teaching career of twenty-four years as a band director, guidance counselor and classroom teacher. Don was faithfully dedicated to God through his service at the First Presbyterian Church in Plainwell. The church family enjoyed his guidance as choir director for thirty-four years, and the church building also benefited with structural improvements from the use of his woodworking and construction skills. At Christmastime for several years, Don gathered together and directed a mixed denominational choir to share the beauty of Handel’s Messiah with the people of Plainwell and Otsego. Those performances were a blessing for the choir members and the audience. Don loved his family and friends. He listened to people with his full attention, making them feel important and respected. He was a wonderful role model for his children and their children. His grandchildren and great grandchildren never failed to bring a smile to his face, no matter what their age. In return, he loved to bring joy to their lives by simply spending time with them; taking them fishing, building something, or just sitting next to them in conversation. We will miss his easy smile, his generous heart, his dry humor, and his humble intelligence. Don is preceded in death by siblings: Pauline Williams, Robert Agne and Marguerite Davis. He is survived by Virginia Agne, his devoted wife, of 66 years; his siblings: Paul Agne, Jon Agne, Max Agne and Marilyn Warner; his children: Gail Toda (Shig), Donald E. Agne (Naomi), Daniel E. Agne (Debbie), Elizabeth E. Agne (Jim McKinley); grandchildren: Angela Jobe, Allison Agne-Maddox, Erinn Wrobel, Robin Kessler, Lauren Zuckerberg, Ian Agne, Emily McKittrick, Camille Woodruff, Sen Toda and his great grandchildren: Emma Maddox, Cooper Maddox, Jackson Jobe and Thomas McKittrick. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Plainwell, Michigan on Sunday, November 2nd, 2014 at 2:00 pm. In addition, a brief military honors ceremony will be held at Fort Custer in Battle Creek, Michigan on Monday, November 3rd at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Plainwell, Michigan. Milo Chandler was a veteran Cobbler (Shoe maker and repair) in Plainwell. He served his apprenticeship under John Heath & Thomas Carroll in 1889. He worked at the same Cobbler bench for 56 years and passed away in 1936. He was said to be a favorite among the area children. This poem was copied by Mrs. Chandler from dog-earred cardboard in his shop after he passed away.
