Do Churches Make A Difference In Their Communities?
I am often challenged by people who want to know what difference our Church and other community Churches make. I offer the answer that our Church shares and communicates the Good News of God's Love and Salvation, through Jesus Christ, which changes people's hearts. However, when people want to see practical evidence of the difference Churches make in this community, there is no better evidence than our Community Food Pantry and Helping Agency, "Christian Neighbors." "Christian Neighbors" was begun by Pastors and local Churches in our Community back in 1983 (30 years ago). Today, "Christian Neighbors" is the Community Food Pantry and Helping Agency in our area, recognized by County Agencies as the primary helping agency for our area. I am excited as we celebrate the 30th Birthday of "Christian Neighbors" culminating with a series of activities on October 12 and a Birthday Party Praise Celebration on October 13, at 6:00 p.m. hosted by the Otsego Baptist Church. I also am very proud to say that my wife, Terri Shaler, who is the Executive Director of "Christian Neighbors," carries out her ministry and responsibilities with care and compassion for people in need. Her leadership has been instrumental in the continued growth at "Christian Neighbors," leading to increased opportunities to offer help and hope to those in need in our Community. Through continued efforts in sharing Jesus with others and inviting them to Church, and through continued efforts in supporting and helping "Christian Neighbors," the Otsego United Methodist Church continues to make a difference in our Community for the glory of God. We truly live out our motto of being a Church "Where Jesus' Love Is Lived." Pastor Joe Shaler is the Pastoral Friend of Colleague of Rev. Dan Minor, the usual author of this column. Jim passed away peacefully on September 23, 2013 after a short illness. Jim leaves behind his wife Rita, son Curtis (Laurie) Williams, daughter Lesa (Dave) Sanchez, step daughters Jana Starr, Kish (Dave) Roeloff, grandchildren Justin (Erica) Meninga, Ryan (Stephanie) Meninga, Tiffany & Taylor Williams, great grandchildren Hunter, Alivia, Brayden & Annabelle Meninga. Obituaries Frances I. HIEMSTRA AGE 95 - ALAMO TWP., MI
Frances passed away peacefully at home with her family in attendance, Tuesday, October 1, 2013. Frances was born January 31, 1918, in Prairieville Twp. the daughter of Alfred and Bernice (Hughes) Anson. Frances was a 1936 graduate of Plainwell High School. In her early years she was a homemaker, later working 20 years for Otsego Public Schools in food service retiring in 1981. Frances enjoyed playing cards, bowling and was a wonderful seamstress. She was a member of Farm Bureau for over 50 years and for many years was a member of Cooper Congregational Church. On December 4, 1937 in Lagrange, IN she married Claude Hiemstra. Surviving are 6 children, Roger (Janet) Hiemstra of NY, Carl Hiemstra of MS, Judy (Mike) Hiemstra-Bronson of Allegan, Carol (Juan) Paez of NJ, Dennis (Mickie) Hiemstra of Otsego, Joyce Hiemstra Hunt of Gobles; 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Duane (Arlene) Anson; in-laws, Jesse LaRoy, Jean (Ron) Rus, Virginia Hiemstra; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Hiemstra, 5 brothers and an infant sister. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 4, 2013 from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego where funeral services will take place on Saturday at 11:00 A.M. with Celebrant Bill Rose officiating. Burial will follow at Alamo Center Cemetery. In lieu of flowers those desiring may make memorial contributions to Wings of Hope Hospice. Nelson C. NORTON AGE 78 - OTSEGO, MI
Nelson passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2013 in Allegan. Nelson was born April 1, 1935 in Leoma, TN to Carl and Dollie Norton. He served his country in the Air Force. Nelson worked for GM for 28½ years retiring in 1993. In his leisure time he enjoyed building model airplanes and had an interest in anything to do with planes and flying; he enjoyed working with wood; camping and spending time with his family. He was a member of Otsego Elks Lodge. On January 29, 1972 he married Marilyn Filtenborg who survives. Also surviving are his children, William Norton of SC and Lucinda of Ohio; step children, Daniel (Lynn) Filtenborg of Shelbyville and Lisa Wheat of Three Rivers; 6 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren and his siblings, Bonnie, Carolyn, Louise and Fay. He was preceded in death by his parents. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service may be planned in the future. Donations in memory of Nelson may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Millie passed away at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday September 25, 2013 at her home. She was born March 29, 1942 in Kalamazoo, Michigan to Paul & Dorothy (Martin) Taylor. She married Sheldon Webb who preceded her in death in 2006. Surviving are 2 daughters, Kathleen (Tim) Dunn of Three Rivers, MI, Carol Gates of Plainwell, MI; 3 grandchildren, Samantha Hageman, Mollie Kent, Jordan Lynch; 4 great-grandchildren, Trenton Estep, Brenden McLaughlin, Jaxon Chaney, Noah Kent; 1 brother, Donald (Mimi) Taylor of Houghton Lake, MI and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 4 siblings, Jack Taylor, Ruth Meadows, Paul Taylor and Helen Taylor. Millie enjoyed gardening, shopping and spending time with her family. She retired from Parker-Hannifin in Otsego, MI after 32 years of service. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be given to Three Rivers Hospice. David James BRONSON AGE 50 - KALAMAZOO, MI
David passed away Thursday, September 26, 2013. Dave was born January 12, 1963 in Plainwell, the son of James and Helen (Hagenbuch) Bronson. He served his country in the US Navy. Dave worked for 18 years at Molson Co. doing plastic injection molding. He loved the LST-325 the World War II ship his father served on, and was the author of a book about Mosier’s Raiders. He was an avid horseman who loved his dogs and enjoyed playing guitar. On September 25, 1995 at Bowens Mills in Barry Co. he married Donna Mae Cook who survives. Also surviving are his step-children, Travis L. Fox and James “J.D.” Fox both of Parchment; one grandson, Travis L. Fox III; Siblings, Leslie Bronson, Denise (Rick) Chamberlain, Diane (Garry) Bouwman, Jayne (Vincent) Kellogg; many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his parents. Cremation has taken place and graveside services were held Thursday, October 3, 2013 at Trowbridge Methodist Cemetery with Father Jim Haack officiating. Leslie passed away Sunday, September 29, 2013 at Wings Home in Allegan with his family by his side. Leslie was born January 17, 1948 in Plainwell, MI, the son of James and Helen (Hagenbuch) Bronson. He enjoyed playing guitar, riding his Harley Davidson, collecting Harley Davidson memorabilia and he loved spending time with his family and his dog.
