Keeping a car waxed and sealed can help maintain a durable exterior finish. This includes not only the paint, but the rubber and vinyl parts of the car’s exterior.

Winter is a good time to switch to a heavy-duty synthetic wax that can shield against water and road salts. High-quality sealants can be used on bumpers, trim and rubber door seals as added protection. Do not stop washing your car just because the weather is cold. Slushy, wet roads and snow-melting salts can speed up the formation of rust or other decay on the undercarriage of the vehicle. Bernice “Bee” SHERRY AGE 97 - OTSEGO, MI

Bee passed away Saturday, November 3, 2018 at the Wings Home in Allegan. She was born December 18, 1920 in Cicero, Illinois the youngest daughter of Joseph and Margaret (Staback) Macak. Bee had worked in the computer department at a high school in Illinois, had owned and operated a grocery store with her husband and had also worked at Arrow Oil Company. She met the love of her life, Edward Sherry at the Melody Mill Ballroom in North Riverside. They both loved to dance. They were married May 17, 1941 at Mary Queen of Heaven Church in Cicero. They spent 64 wonderful years together until his passing in 2005. Surviving are her children, Sharon Shroeder of Otsego and Roger Sherry of Illinois; 5 grandchildren; Sherry, Mark, R. Matthew, Megan and Michael and 4 great-grandchildren, Nissa, Christopher, Justin and Henry. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and siblings, William Macak, Margaret Krahulik and an infant brother. A funeral service will be held at the Adams, Winterfield and Sullivan Funeral Home in Downers Grove, Illinois at a later time. Burial will take place at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside, Illinois. Arrangements by Winkel Funeral Home - Otsego Messages of condolence may be posted at www.WinkelFuneralHome.com

“DOWN BUT NOT OUT”

This is an ancient story with a modern home-town message. In the fourth chapter of II Corinthians (again in the sixth chapter) Apostle Paul speaks of how he handled the hardships of life. Here is an example:

“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:8,9).

I like the way one translator (mentioned above) uses the metaphor of a boxer… knocked down, but not out. Reading this passage brings to mind a story that comes out of my home town church.

Otto Jennings Helweg lived in my home town. He became a great educator, civil engineer, humanitarian and author. He was the recipient of numerous awards but considered his greatest treasure as being an ambassador for Jesus Christ.

Earlier in his life, he attended the U.S. Naval Academy where he earned his first engineering degree, was an undefeated heavyweight boxing champion, played on Navy’s Cotton Bowl football team and was an honorable All-American in lacrosse.

In a letter to the editor of Tri-City Record (8/30/18) a Don Oderkirk, U.S. Navy Reserve, Retired, wrote that while at the Academy, Helweg was a classmate of the late John McCain.

They were both commissioned as Ensigns in the U.S. Navy in l958. Otto Helweg died of a heart attack on November 2, 2008 while in Denver, Colorado campaigning for his classmate.

It is told that McCain, at 127 pounds, was a lightweight boxer at the academy. In a Newsweek article dated May l7, 2007, Otto Helweg was quoted as saying, “McCain was not the most skilled, but he was the most feared … he never gave up!” That same spirit became evident when John McCain became a prisoner of war.

Regarding the hardships of life, I think Otto Jennings Helweg and Senator John McCain would agree it is best to never give up!

Prayer: Dear Lord, when we get down, let us never give up. Amen.
