ADOPTABLE Pet of the Week! Pluto was brought into Wishbone’s care as a surrender when his owner could unfortunately no longer afford to care for him. He’s a 6 year old chocolate lab mix who has been neutered, microchipped, and brought up to date on vaccinations/prevention. Pluto is a calm, gentle dog with a fun, playful streak! Most of the time Pluto is snoozing away in his Kuranda bed or relaxing chewing on a nylon bone. When he gets to go outside and spend time with people he is so happy and sometimes gets the zoomies! He likes to play with his neighbor in the outdoor runs at the shelter and seems to be a fan of playing fetch, too. Pluto could potentially join a home that includes other dogs, children, and maybe cats! His previous home did not include cats and he has not yet been tested with them at the shelter. He used to live with another dog, so if your family has a dog a meet and greet will be scheduled to ensure it’s a good match! World War I came to a close with the signing of the Armistice on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month: November 11, 1918. An American army newspaper article from Compiegne, France read in part, “The Great War is over. The Germans signed an armistice agreement at 5:00 A.M. here and it went into effect at eleven o’clock. President Wilson made it official when he informed both houses of Congress today that ‘the war thus comes to an end…’” In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day. At the urging of major U.S. veteran organizations, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day when President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the bill into law on May 26, l954. The purpose of the change was to include and pay tribute to all Americans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime. While our nation is divided in so many ways, most of us can agree that democracy is important, equality is desired and freedom is worth fighting for. If we are not united in opinions, may we be united in prayer? May we be united in the hope for a better nation under God? With this in mind, let us unite in prayer for our nation as follows:

SENIOR SUPPORTERS Every year charitable-minded Americans over age 72 face a dilemma: What to do with the mandatory taxable distribution— otherwise known as a required minimum distribution (RMD)— from their Traditional IRA account(s). One option is to make a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) and contribute up to $100,000 directly to qualified 501(c)(3) public charities, like Christian Neighbors, without counting the distribution as taxable income (if age 70½ or older). Thus, you can receive both a federal and Michigan tax benefit from your charitable contribution even if you do not itemize deductions. Make your donation by December 31 to qualify this year. When you file your taxes for the year, include your donation on the relevant tax document. Look ahead to next year. I DARE YOU TO BE LOVED BY GOD When people listen, God speaks. When people obey, God acts. When God acts, people are changed. Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to an inhabited town; hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them. Psalm 107:4-5 They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on the shoulders of others; but they themselves are unwilling to lift a finger to move them. They do all their deeds to be seen by others; for they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long. Matthew 23:4-5 REFLECTION: When someone ties us up with heavy rules and intolerable burdens it often breaks our spirit. We end up having no hope and we give up. Jesus understands this so well. The Scribes zealously oppress and terrorize the people’s souls every day. They are not willing to assist those in need but are rigid in their teaching. Jesus understands that the Law of God is a heavy and intolerable burden on us. Jesus strongly reproved these proud and arrogant hypocrites who demand others to pay what they owe God. What then is our hope, and how can we find our way back to God? One of my favorite authors, Paul Zahl, writes; “People do not wish to be challenged, people wish to be comforted. They wish to be supported. They wish to be encouraged and sustained. What people wish for is to be loved” (Grace in Practice: A Theology of Everyday Life) I completely agree with Paul, people want to be loved and especially loved by God. Our own sin keeps us from experiencing it. We all, in some way, feel there is a curse upon our lives, the curse of death. As the famous song from the early 70s called Country Joe and the Fish goes; “...and it’s five, six, seven, open up the pearly gates, well there ain’t no time to wonder why, whoopee! we’re all gonna die.” The only relief from the curse is God’s eternal and loving grace and the end of the law. St. Paul was taught to be a Pharisee but Jesus called his name. That is why he wrote in Romans 10:1-4 “Dear brothers and sisters, the longing of my heart and my prayer to God is for the people of Israel to be saved. I know what enthusiasm they have for God, but it is misdirected zeal. For they don’t understand God’s way of making people right with himself. Refusing to accept God’s way, they cling to their own way of getting right with God by trying to keep the law. For Christ has already accomplished the purpose for which the law was given. As a result, all who believe in him are made right with God. Our hope is in the name of our Lord Jesus.” There is no room for this message in an arrogant heart. PRAYER TIME: Lord Jesus, thank you for calling my name as I wandered in the desert of this life. My soul was so famished that I didn’t even know I was hungry and thirsty for your love. Remembering Patty Chapman

Terry L. BRENNER AGE 76 - OTSEGO, MI

Terry passed away, Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo. He was born June 16, 1947 in Allegan the son of Keith and Lorraine (Harrington) Brenner. Terry attended Otsego High School and graduated in 1965. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Vietnam Conflict. For many years Terry was a truck driver for Hatfield Electric until his retirement. Terry loved race cars and racing. He co-owned and raced sprint cars and won a track championship at Skagit Speedway in Alger, Washington. He also owned and sponsored quarter midget cars for his son, Josh. When he wasn’t racing Terry enjoyed sports of all kinds, golfing, playing the guitar, listening to some good music, especially the Blues and enjoying a stiff drink. On October 28, 1983 in Burlington, WA, he married Connie Cassal who survives. Also surviving are his children, Josh (Kristen) Brenner, Jamie (Jim) Porter and Jenny (Paul) Allen; grandchildren, Wyatt, Abby and Dusty Brenner, Hannah, Joseph, Will and Luke Allen and Abby, Ben and Caroline Porter; sister, Pamela (Lloyd) Heldenbrand and Brian (Lura) Brenner along with many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, November 11, 2023 at the Winkel Funeral Home in Otsego. Burial of ashes will take place at Rowe Cemetery in Cheshire Township at a later time. Contributions in memory of Terry may be made to the American Lung Association.

Five years….It's been ﬁve years since God called you home. He is continuing to heal my heart but it's a slow process. I can at least talk about you without falling apart. I remember all the good times we had: camping, traveling to Florida, riding our motorcycle and boating. They remind me of all the joyous times we shared. I wish we would have had more time, but we are not guaranteed time. I will think about you all day on the 11th and 14th. As the song says, "It's not easy to say goodbye." For us, till we meet again. I can't wait for that day.
