“Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see” (Hebrews 11:1)

If you want to understand the meaning of faith, read the eleventh chapter of Hebrews in the New Testament. The chapter begins by defining faith as “being sure of what we hope for.” Jesus Christ is our greatest hope. Having a personal relationship with Christ gives us confidence for today and hope for tomorrow. By faith we can trust God’s wisdom in any given circumstance and know that God will see us through. As a pastor I have walked with many people through the valley of suffering and death. During such times a common testimony is “We don’t know how we could have ever gone through this valley without God and faith.”

The second part of the above verse speaks of being “certain of what we do not see.” The Bible says, “We see in a mirror dimly, but we shall see face to face” (I Corinthians 13:12). We may not be able to see our future, but God can. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Faith is taking the first step when you can’t see the entire staircase.”

A long list of heroes of faith are listed in Hebrews 11. It is like a “Who’s Who” of extraordinary people who suffered abuse, hardship and persecution yet believed. Each person is introduced with the words, “By faith...” There is one verse which summarizes the author’s message, “without faith it is impossible to please God” (Hebrews 11:6).

Faith is simply believing and trusting God. Yet some will say, “My faith is too small.” If you think your faith is too small read Jesus’ words in Matthew 17:20, “Faith the size of a grain of mustard seed can move mountains.”

What kind of mountain are you facing right now? Is it the mountain of fear, inferiority, loneliness or selfdefeat? Factor in faith in Christ and see what happens!

Trudy passed away Monday, November 11, 2019 at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. She was born August 15, 1955 in Otsego to Mary Lou Snyder and was adopted by her grandparents Clifton and Geraldine (Hildebrandt) Snyder. Trudy was a baker at the Grand Traverse Pie Company in Kalamazoo. She enjoyed coloring, trips to the casino and spending time with her son and taking trips to visit him. Surviving are her son, Charles “Chuck” Groen of Kalamazoo, stepchildren, Leo Jr. (Kelly) Moyer, Raymond (Cathie) Moyer, Teresa (Mike) Botma and Brian Moyer; siblings, Janet Kronke, Lois Rickli, Jack (Judy) Tucker, Jane Bullock, Sally Cook, Diane Hall, Skip Tucker, Louann (Chuck) Gilbert, Mike (Marilyn) Tucker, Tina (David) Florian and Steven Tucker along with many nieces and nephews. Ken passed away Friday, November 8, 2019 at Life Care Center in Plainwell. He was born August 3, 1942 in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Lawrence and Thelma Dodge. Ken attended Penn State and Michigan State University and was a fisheries biologist for the Department of Natural Resources for 32 years until his retirement. In his spare time Ken loved to hunt anything with feathers, fish, collect hunting decoys, go canoeing, antiquing, traveling and following Penn State, Michigan State and the Cleveland Indians. On June 18, 1971 he married Hazel Sharkey who survives. Also surviving are his children, Dwane (Pam) Enos of Kalamazoo, Sue (Ray) Hoyt of Otsego and Terri Enos of Allegan; 2 grandchildren, Josh (Bri) Enos and Christopher Dalrymple; 2 great-grandchildren, Caleb Enos and Dakota Dalrymple; his brother, Carl Dodge; sister-in-law, Eileen (Joe) Hodges; brothers-in-law, David (Mary) Sharkey and Art Sharkey and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister and brother-in-law, Elinor (Tom) Eberhardt. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. AGE 80 - PLAINWELL, MI Ron passed away Thursday, November 14, 2019 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. He was born June 16, 1939 in Kalamazoo the son of Isaac and Beatrice (Brenner) Stamm. Ron graduated from Flint Institute of Barbering. He had worked as a reserve police officer for Plainwell and Kalamazoo Counties, had been a millwright for Upjohn/Pharmacia for 20 years and spent most of his adult life working as a barber, most recently at Carl’s in Parchment. In his free time Ron enjoyed collecting sporting memorabilia, bass fishing, antiquing and going out for breakfast. Those that knew Ron know he had an incredible love for his dogs. On September 17, 1960 at the First Presbyterian Church in Kalamazoo he married Sandra Sibbersen who survives. Also surviving are his children, Beth (Don) Bricker of Plainwell and Mark Stamm also of Plainwell; 3 grandchildren, Tommy (Sarah) Bricker , David Stamm, Daniel (Fiancé, Kaitlin Stults) Stamm along with several nieces and nephews. AGE 76 - PLAINWELL, MI Carmel went to be with the Lord on November 13, 2019. Carmel was born on March 17, 1943 to Grover & Mae (Whitaker) Hall. Carmel’s family includes his children: Jodi (Mike) Richmond, Jason (Tylyn Brown) Hall, Karen Hall, Kevin (Hillary) Hall, Danny (Jenny) Hall and Gary Hall; his siblings: include: Hobert (Sue Anson) Hall, Alkie (Verne) Holden, Faye (Rich) Risner, Ronnie Hall, Jim Hall, Debbie Walley and Rick (Denise) Hall; 19 grandchildren with one on the way; 2 great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings: Paul Hall, Robert Hall, Shirley Marshall, Lucille LaFountain and Ray Hall. Carmel cherished family gatherings and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Carmel worked as a Timber Buyer and Logger all his life. He was a hard worker and a legend in the woods. He was a semiprofessional pool player who was well known. A highlight was playing with Minnesota Fats and Cornbread Red who was a friend and travel companion. Carmel listened to George Jones. He had a big heart and will be dearly missed. A special thanks goes to Jason and Tylyn for their loving care in the last few years. AGE 87 - GREENVILLE, MI (Formerly of Plainwell) Nancy passed away Monday, November 11, 2019 at home under the care of her family and Spectrum Hospice. She was born June 24, 1932 in South Haven, the daughter of Julius M. & Maria J. (Winkle) Greiffendorf. Nancy graduated from South Haven High School and was the secretary to the principal. Nancy married Donald W. "Bill" Banks on September 20, 1952 in Gobles, Michigan. Bill and Nancy owned the Banks Oil Company, where she ran the office. Nancy was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Plainwell. Upon retiring, Bill and Nancy ran a foster care home in Mt. Pleasant. Nancy enjoyed baking, canning, and sewing. She made quilts for the Methodist Community House in Grand Rapids. Nancy also made quilts and Raggedy Andy and Ann dolls for her grandchildren. She also liked to play cards with the grandchildren. Nancy also made apple pies for visitors and newcomers at the church in Greenville. Nancy is survived by her husband Donald W. Roger was born on September 13, 1942 to Delos and Maxine (Earl) Hilts in Kalamazoo, MI. He was called home by our Heavenly Father on November 8, 2019. Roger was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his sister Sharon (Ed) Buys, his son Kelly Brooks, daughters Della Hilts, Shelly (Jim) Belka, and Christina Thompson. Also surviving are his grandchildren Elizabeth Hoyt, Kim (Matt) Noble, Eric (Ashlea) Belka, Tamara Hoyt, Roger Hilts, Aubry (Jed) Noble, Brock Sabo, and Kierah Thompson; His great grandchildren Ethan Flickinger, Matthew Noble, Eric Belka, Lola Harig, Shelby Flickinger, Brennan Hoyt, Mia Hilts, Maybelle Noble, Dallas Belka, Jaylynn Gentry, Luci Noble, Baylee Hilts, Winston Noble, Lester Noble and many nieces and nephews. In 1942 we were a country at war, you could buy a bottle of soda for a nickel and a gallon of gas for 15 cents and the Hilts lovingly welcomed Roger into this world at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Roger grew up in times where there was much uncertainty in this country he attended school at both Martin Public and Allegan Public. Roger worked hard throughout his life; he retired after 32 years from Peters Construction. Roger was a member of The International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Roger often didn’t know when to quit when it came to work around the house like stacking wood and other projects. He loved to run equipment and was stubborn when it came to letting other people do stuff for him. In 1964 Roger married Myrtle Sparks (who survives) and although they divorced, they continue to spend time as a family with their children and grandchildren. Roger loved his family. He loved his son and his three daughters and loved to spend time with them. During retirement you could find him riding around in his mule with his beloved sidekick Patches, or being driven around the property like Miss Daisy which he enjoyed. Roger enjoyed old country and gospel music and any music played by his grandson Eric, Nascar, football and Westerns on television. Roger had an open door policy at his home, friends and family were aware that they could stop in at any time, unannounced for a visit. Most days you could find a group of people around his table laughing and visiting. Roger was quite a ladies man and loved to flirt. He was a collector of hugs, his goal was to get as many as he could thru his life. Roger was loved and will be greatly missed by so many. He was a wonderful father, grandfather, brother, and Poppy to many. Funeral services were held November 13, 2019. Pastor Mike Risner officiated. Burial followed at Hillside Cemetery in Plainwell. Contributions in memory of Roger may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Cancer Society.
