Chronic Pain Ruining Your Life? Advanced Back and Neck Pain Solutions Now Available FOR THE TREATMENT OF CHRONIC AND SEVERE DISC RELATED CONDITIONS How Does Decompression Work?

Non-surgical Spinal Decompression is a pain free procedure designed to relieve pressure that builds up on the discs and nerves. As pressure builds inside the disc it causes bulging of the gelatinous material inside the disc. This jellylike tissue can be placed under so much pressure that it can cause the annulus, or outer band of the disc, to rupture. When the disc has ruptured or ‘herniated’, it may create pressure against one or more of the spinal nerves which can cause pain, weakness or numbness in the neck or back that can radiate into the legs or arms. Non-surgical Decompression creates negative pressure within the disc, causing the herniation to be drawn slowly back into the disc space, thus relieving the pressure, as it rehydrates the disc. Midway through the treatment protocol, the formation of Collagen begins to take place in and around the disc. These ‘sticky’ cells have the ability to form other cells including chondroblasts or baby cartilage cells. These cells help the disc to heal.

WHAT IF YOUR DOCTOR WERE TO SAY TO YOU: “Congratulations, I have great news! There is a way to treat your back or neck pain without having to undergo surgery. This FDA cleared technology is non-invasive, pain free and drug free. There are no needles or anesthesia. It can be done on an outpatient basis and it has proven to be very successful. Thousands of patients have been treated successfully using this technique. And the cost of the treatment is a fraction of what you would pay if you were to undergo surgery. In fact, it is probably significantly less than or equal to the out of pocket expenses if surgery was deemed necessary.” This scientific discovery is called Non-surgical Spinal Decompression and it is available at Albrecht Chiropractic / West Michigan Spinal Decompression. It is considered a viable and reliable alternative to surgery in many cases. This unique procedure is becoming widely regarded as the most efficient way and cost-effective approach to treating herniated discs, spinal stenosis, disc degeneration, and sciatica. It is a pain free procedure designed to relieve pressure that builds up on the discs and nerves.

Why Manage Pain When You Could Live Pain Free?

We see patients who have tried various alternatives to manage their pain such as purchasing a new mattress, exercise therapy or pain medications because they think there is a possibility that their pain will go away over time and their condition will resolve on its own. If the pain that you are experiencing is due to muscle strain or stress, then these types of therapies may work for you. But if you suffer from chronic and severe back or neck pain due to disc related conditions of the spine, then it is highly likely that your condition will require a more aggressive disc procedure.

What Is A Decompression Session Like?

Typical patients find spinal decompression to be a relaxing, painless procedure that in most cases can be completed in a few weeks on an outpatient basis. The procedure is performed with the patient fully clothed and is safe, painless and extremely effective. In fact, it is not uncommon for patients to fall asleep during the procedure. Each session has a cumulative effect designed to significantly reduce pain and improve function as patients progress through the decompression program.

Pain Relief Without Risky Side Effects

When you’re in pain getting the right treatment is what’s most important. We will design a comprehensive treatment program that focuses on your specific condition utilizing the latest technological advancements in Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression, core strengthening, and pain relieving therapies. Our goal is to treat the source of your pain, so that you can get back to living a normal and pain free life again!

What Are Patients Saying? I am a senior citizen who likes to stay active, but last summer I fell and ran my head into a steel garage door and received severe neck pain. I had an MRI taken and they found several damaged discs in my neck. I have also had trouble with lower back pain and numbness in my toes for the past several years and an MRI of that area showed multiple damaged discs in my low back as well. I went to several Dr.’s and specialists with each of them taking weeks or months to schedule me and then even longer to get any results and none of them had any answers for my pain. They just talked and talked. I then went to Laser and Spine Institute in Cleveland and had appointments scheduled to have laser spine surgery for both my neck and low back which was going to cost me well over $25,000 out of pocket. That’s when my daughter asked me why I didn’t see a chiropractor that went to her church. I said I didn’t believe in Chiropractors. She said what would it hurt to just go talk to him at least? I agreed to try it. I decided to make an appointment with Albrecht Chiropractic Office PC and got in within a matter of days. After talking to them and having x-rays taken, they found one leg to be shorter than the other and we decided to try a treatment. After that first treatment my feet were better. Then they told me about spinal decompression as an alternative to the surgery for both my neck and low back. It was only a fraction of the cost so I decided to try it. Now I am 100% pain free in both my back and neck. I feel the best that I have in years. I don’t like to eat my words, but I am now a firm believer of chiropractic and Dr. Darl and Dr. Seth Albrecht. I would recommend this office to anyone with back or neck pain. - Larry W Leister Sr. 06/18

Otsego Public Schools Breaks Ground on New Early Childhood Education Center

Affordable Hearing Store

Within a month, heavy equipment will be out at the site of the new Learn ‘n Grow Early Childhood Education Center for Otsego Public Schools; but, the stars of the project, preschoolers, did the honors. At a ground breaking ceremony November 14, about 25 preschoolers put on their hard hats and grabbed a shovel to mark the beginning of this new, nature-based preschool building for Otsego families and the community. Many of them are in the 3-year-old program so they’ll be in the new building next year.

Heather Badders, Otsego’s Early Childhood Director says, “The vision of Otsego Public Schools is to, one day, provide universal preschool for all 3 and 4 year olds.” Learn ‘n Grow Preschool started at Otsego Public Schools 11 years ago with just one classroom. Seeing the need and growth, a preschool expansion and early childhood center has been something Otsego has talked about for years. “We are very thankful for our community and their support of Otsego Public Schools so that we can provide wonderful learning opportunities for our students and do what’s best for the education of all our kids,” says Otsego Superintendent Jeff Hasse. “We’re so excited to get this project underway and have a unique preschool experience available for our youngest learners.”

Bread pudding is a tasty concoction made with simple ingredients that, when combined, pack a delicious punch. Bread pudding often can be crafted from ingredients one likely already has in the kitchen. In addition, recipes can be adjusted depending on the number of servings desired. While bread pudding may be thought of as a dessert, it also can make for a tantalizing meal at breakfast or brunch. Ideal for warming up on autumn or winter days, this “Breakfast Bread Pudding With Pecan Crumble,” courtesy of The American Pecan Council and Brandon Matzek, founder of the culinary website Kitchen Konfidence, is sure to be a hit. This satisfying dish also can be prepared ahead of time and then garnished before warming and serving.

Breakfast Bread Pudding With Pecan Crumble Yield: 6 to 8 servings

For the bread pudding: 1⁄2 tablespoon unsalted butter, for greasing 1 pound brioche bread, cut into 3⁄4-inch cubes 8 eggs 2 cups milk 1⁄2 cup heavy cream 1⁄2 cup sugar 1⁄2 cup packed light brown sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 2 tablespoons good bourbon Pinch of fine grain sea salt 1⁄2 cup chopped pecans, toasted

For the crumbled topping: 1⁄2 cup flour 1⁄2 cup pecan pieces 1⁄2 cup packed dark brown sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1⁄4 teaspoon fine grain sea salt 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature Sliced persimmons, for serving (optional) Maple syrup, for serving (optional)

Lightly butter a 9 x 13 baking dish, then place cubes of brioche in the baking dish in an even layer. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugars, vanilla, bourbon, and a pinch of sea salt. Sprinkle toasted pecans over the brioche, then pour the wet ingredient mixture evenly all over the bread, making sure it’s covered thoroughly. Cover and let sit in the fridge for at least 2 hours (or up to overnight). To bake the bread pudding: Preheat the oven to 350 F and remove the baking dish from fridge. Meanwhile, prepare the crumble: Add flour, pecans, dark brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, and butter to a medium bowl, and using your fingertips, rub ingredients together until evenly combined and clumps start to form. Sprinkle the surface of the bread evenly with the crumbs. Bake until the bread pudding is puffy and the top is golden, about 45 minutes to an hour. To serve, cut squares of warm bread pudding, and place on small plates. Top with sliced persimmons and maple syrup, if desired.

Breaking bread with friends and family is the perfect recipe for a fun day or evening. However, even the most experienced party hosts may struggle with ways to cater to their guests’ various dietary restrictions.

According to Food Allergy Research & Education organization, as many as 15 million Americans have food allergies. Research by a team of allergists at the McGill University Health Centre found that 7.5 percent of Canadians report having at least one food allergy. In addition to food allergies, hosts also must consider diets, food sensitivities, religious preferences, and lifestyle choices (i.e., vegetarianism or veganism) when planning dinner party menus. So what is the accommodating host or hostess to do? Etiquette experts say that while it is important to keep guests’ preferences in mind, it is impossible to accommodate everyone. But hosts can take certain steps when planning a menu that might make it easier to cater to an array of eaters. • Host a buffet or family-style meal. Buffets and family-style services provide plenty of options for guests to enjoy. Think about offering at least one item from all of the food groups, including vegetables that will fit the bill for vegetarians, vegans and those who may be avoiding grains.

• Keep some trendy foods on hand. Consider current dietary trends and how likely your guests are to follow them. For example, investigate a few glutenfree options and some foods that are low in carbohydrates. Opt for quinoa or couscous as an alternative to white rice. A hummus dip is a nice change from a dairy-based dressing for those who may need to avoid dairy products. Replace iceberg or romaine lettuce with baby spinach and arugula.

• Stick to simple recipes. The more ingredients in each dish, the more explaining you will have to do to guests who might be watching what they eat. Herb-crusted grilled chicken, roasted colorful vegetables in a ratatouille, a bean salad, and a three-cheese gourmet mac-and-cheese are some simple crowd-pleasers. • Offer a signature dish. In addition to “safe” menu items, showcase something you enjoy and like to prepare. After all, you should be able to enjoy the foods you love as well.

Some guests may come with food in hand. Graciously accept their additions and give credit where credit is due. You can even encourage those with especially strict diets to bring their own foods to ensure they don’t go hungry.

| Easy ‘green’ Thanksgiving ideas

COMMUNITY SHOPPERS GUIDE...OTSEGO, MI 49078....HOLIDAY GUIDE...November 17, 2018....Phone 694-9431

Thanksgiving is a holiday to give thanks and share special moments with family and friends. While the original Thanksgiving might have taken place during a time when food was sparse, nowadays Thanksgiving often involves excessive amounts of food, with more food ending up in the garbage than in celebrants’ bellies.

The United States Department of Agriculture projects that Americans will throw away more than 200 million pounds of edible turkey meat this Thanksgiving holiday. And Thanksgiving typically ushers in a period of wastefulness, as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says American households produce roughly 25 percent more trash between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day than during the rest of the year.

dishes that are used only to make the table seem full. Buy a small turkey or think about only serving turkey breasts, which tend to be the most popular cuts of the bird. Use reusable shopping bags to carry items home and reduce waste even further.

• Light candles and reduce energy consumption. During the meal, eat by candlelight and turn off lights in other areas of the home that are not in use. Rather than turning on the television, take the party outdoors and play a game of football on the front lawn.

Reducing waste is a worthy goal year-round, but especially so during the holiday season. And accomplishing that goal can be done without sacrificing holiday traditions.

• Have a local Thanksgiving. Start a new tradition and invite nearby friends and family over for the holiday instead of traveling long distances. According to Use Less Stuff, a resource for eco-conscious men and women, if each family reduced gasoline consumption by one gallon (roughly 20 miles), they could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by one million tons.

• Decorate using natural items. Scour the great outdoors for all-natural centerpiece materials or other items that can be turned into wreaths and garlands. Vases filled with pine cones and acorns make for beautiful, inexpensive and festive decorations.

• Don’t let recycling fall by the wayside. Remember to recycle all applicable items. Just because it’s a holiday doesn’t mean recycling habits should be forgotten. Encourage guests to pitch in by clearly marking recycling bins . Thanksgiving can be less wasteful without detracting from the enjoyment and true meaning of the holiday.

• Use fine china when serving meals. Thanksgiving provides an opportunity to serve meals on fine china and use the silverware that has gone unused instead of disposable plates and utensils. In addition to adding a touch of elegance to meals, reusable china and silverware is less wasteful than paper plates and plastic utensils. Cloth napkins and other table linens are also more eco-friendly than paper napkins.

• Shop locally and organically. When shopping for Thanksgiving dinner, choose local produce, poultry and grains whenever possible. Resist the urge to buy more than you need as well. Skip some of the less-popular

Did You Know?

Leaving cookies and milk for Santa Claus is a Christmas Eve tradition. Children regularly place a dish of cookies and a glass of milk by the tree on Christmas Eve so that Santa has enough energy to complete all of his gift-giving before kids wake up on Christmas morning. The tradition of leaving cookies out on Christmas Eve may trace its origins to Saint Nicholas. On the feast of St. Nicholas on December 6, children would leave food and drink for the saint and any attendants. The treats would be exchanged for gifts. While that's one theory behind the tradition, others think it is linked to the history of the Christmas tree and the edible decorations that adorn it. Santa would snack on the ornaments. Even after edible decorations gave way to inedible ornaments, the tradition of leaving a snack for Santa remained. Whatever the origins behind the tradition, millions of children dutifully leave milk and cookies for Santa on Christmas Eve.

• Send home the leftovers. Send each guest home with some leftovers if you have any. This way the refrigerator isn’t left full of items that will end up uneaten. Otherwise, donate uncooked food to a local food bank. Use any scraps of vegetables in a compost pile.

| THE HISTORY OF BLACK FRIDAY

COMMUNITY SHOPPERS GUIDE...OTSEGO, MI 49078....HOLIDAY GUIDE...November 17, 2018....Phone 694-9431

Black Friday marks the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season. Come Black Friday, shoppers strive to get the lowest prices on gifts for their loved ones. Much of the focus of Black Friday is on finding the best deals, but it can be interesting to take a breath and learn how this phenomenon developed and how it has evolved over the years.

“Black Friday”

The term “black Friday” was originally associated with gold prices and manipulation on the part of speculators Jay Gould and James Fisk. This scandal occurred in September 1869. Commodity prices plummeted 50 percent as a result, and the term “black Friday” was coined to refer to that drop.

The phrase “black Friday” also became famous for all the wrong reasons in 1966. Philadelphia police used it to refer to the Friday traffic jams and crowding in downtown stores from tourists and shoppers who flooded into the city in advance of the Army-Navy football game held the Saturday after Thanksgiving each year. Bigger crowds and rowdiness contributed to long hours and stressful shifts for local police.

Black Friday reinvented

The retail industry started using the term “Black Friday” in the late 1980s. Spin doctors turned previously negative connotations into positive ones by associating the phrase with stores turning a profit and moving accounting ledgers from “red to black” thanks to big year-end sales. Retailers and consumers rallied around low-cost “doorbusters” and other discounted prices.

Interestingly enough, according to the National Retail Federation, Black Friday really hasn’t been the most lucrative day for retailers over the years. In fact, greater profits and larger crowds are often seen on the last Saturday preceeding Christmas.

Shopping weekend evolves

While Black Friday may have been the catalyst, in recent years shoppers have made the entire weekend of Black Friday a lucrative one for retailers. Many stores now open on Thanksgiving and extend sales through the entire weekend. Small Business Saturday and Sunday promote patronizing mom-and-pop stores. Cyber Monday emerged when online shopping became a popular way to grab deals, and it marks the close of the opening weekend of the holiday shopping season. In 2017, Black Friday weekend attracted 174 million shoppers who spent an average of $335.47, according to the NRF.

| Everyday ways to help your elderly neighbors

COMMUNITY SHOPPERS GUIDE...OTSEGO, MI 49078....HOLIDAY GUIDE...November 17, 2018....Phone 694-9431

Thoughtful men, women and children can give back to their communities in various ways. Coaching youth sports, volunteering with local charities and donating to local food or clothing drives are just a few of the ways you can help make your community a better place.

Another way to give back is to help your elderly neighbors who may not be as independent as they once were. Such men and women may have physical limitations that compromise their ability to perform everyday tasks. People in the prime of their life take their ability to perform such tasks for granted. And while these gestures might seem simple, helping your

elderly neighbors with their everyday tasks can have a profound impact on their lives.

• Ask if a neighbor needs anything from the grocery store. Everyone forgets to buy something at the grocery store from time to time. That’s a minor inconvenience to most people, but it can have a much bigger impact on elderly people who have mobility issues. Before taking trips to the grocery store, make it a habit to call an elderly neighbor and ask if he or she needs anything. • Invite seniors over for dinner or other gatherings. Many seniors deal with

social isolation, which occurs when they lack opportunities to interact with other people. Recent data from the Administration on Aging indicates that 35 percent of women over the age of 65 were widows and almost half of women 75 and older live alone. Inviting elderly neighbors who live alone over for dinners, movie nights or game watches once per week is a great way to help them avoid social isolation and give them something to look forward to.

• Help with some weekly chores. Seniors living on fixed incomes may find it difficult to maintain their homes. Relatively simple tasks like mowing the lawn, taking out the garbage and even vacuuming can be difficult for seniors with physical limitations. Pitching in to help with such chores once or twice a week won’t require much time on your part and can have

a significant impact on the lives of your aging neighbors.

• Drive seniors to religious services. Attending religious services is important to many seniors, but those who can no longer drive themselves to weekly services may not be attending them as much as they would like. Whether you attend such services or not, offer to drive an elderly neighbor on Sunday mornings (or whenever weekly services are held). Religious services can help seniors stay connected to their faith and their communities, and driving an elderly neighbor to and from houses of worship once per week won’t require a significant commitment of your time. Helping your elderly neighbors is a great and often simple way to give back to your community.

“GENUINE GRATITUDE”

By Rev. Dan Minor - revdminor@att.net _____________________________________

“Let love be genuine …” (Romans 12:9 R.S.V.)

Gratitude is an expression of love. Gratitude is love lived out. When we love someone we show them by being grateful. Therefore, true gratitude is genuine, not made up.

Consider the example of Apostle Paul. He was a very loving and affectionate man. Eleven of his l3 letters begin with an expression of thanksgiving to God and thanksgiving for the persons God called him to serve (Romans l:8, I Corinthians l:4, 2 Corinthians 2:14, Ephesians 1:16, Philippians 1:3, Colossians 1:3, I Thessalonians 1:2, 2 Thessalonians 1:3, I Timothy l:12; 2 Timothy 1:3; Philemon 1:4).

In Romans l: 8 he begins by saying, “First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you.” Notice the word “first.” Genuine gratitude is the believer’s first response to God.

There’s the cartoon of a cat about to be attacked by a ferocious looking dog. When the cat saw the angry dog approaching, the cat began to bark (not meow). The cat’s barking so startled the frightened dog that it tucked its tail between its legs and ran away.

In the last frame the cat said, “Sometimes it helps to know a second language!” The point: Gratitude should be our first language! Genuine gratitude is spontaneous, not studied; real, not rehearsed; and sincere, not selfish.

Genuine gratitude honors God, builds trust, strengthens relationships and helps persons to feel appreciated. We are better persons when we show gratitude to God and to others. This brings to mind the story of a man who keeps an old rope in the trunk of his car. It is a reminder of one day when the car he was driving slid off a slick road and landed in a ditch. A farmer came along, tied a rope to his car, and pulled him out. The man asked the farmer, “How can I ever repay you?”

The farmer replied, “There are many ways to say thank you, and the best way is to pass it on.” The farmer handed him the rope and said, “Why don’t you take this rope, and maybe someday you can help pull somebody out of the ditch.”

Thus, genuine gratitude is something we can show God by helping others. Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for rescuing us from the penalty of sin by dying on a cross for our sins. Amen.

7 years ago November 22nd, 2011 We lost our beautiful son,

Tyler Warner

Tyler was smart, loving, charismatic, funny, and VERY good looking (his words...but I tend to agree!) There isn’t a day that goes by he isn’t thought of or his laughter isn’t missed.

Since the anniversary of his passing falls on Thanksgiving again this year, we will not mourn, but be thankful we had him for 18 years, 9 months and 22 days!

As we honor the life of Tyler this Thanksgiving and everyday, we hope that you will too. The thoughts we shared 7 years ago are as important to us today as they were then.

“To all of Tyler’s TRUE friends and you know who you are, please honor him by doing something positive with your lives. Don’t get caught up in the negative! You all know that Tyler had so many “sayings,” “mottos,” that he lived by. His main one was, “haters are my motivators.” Tyler never judged a soul and was a friend to everyone. I’m sure he had met everyone in Heaven by the second day! So when life seems hard and the choices even harder, think of Tyler who is watching from above and make the RIGHT choices! Remember, not everyone gets a second chance, my Tyler didn’t….so please make the RIGHT choice the FIRST time!”

...and to Tyler, we miss and love you as much now as we did then. The hole you left can never be filled. Love you to the moon and back! ~ Mom and Lauren “Babie” Grace
