4. How did the Grinch know that he hadn't stopped Christmas? 5. How much did the Grinch's heart grow that day? 6. What was the name of the dog that the Grinch made into his “reindeer?”

Did You Know?

The Grinch didn't make his only appearance when he attempted to steal Christmas. Dr. Seuss reprised the character in two more books: "Halloween is Grinch Night" and "The Grinch Grinches the Cat in the Hat." The Grinch and his faithful mutt, Max, also appeared in the children's show, "The Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss."

1. Where did the Grinch live?

2. Although the Grinch disliked many things about Christmas, what was the one the one thing he liked least of all? 3. While stealing a Christmas tree, the Grinch was caught in the act by a small Who (not more than two!)...what was her name?

Thurl Ravenscroft, who sang such numbers as "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch," was also the voice of Tony the Tiger.

The original Grinch was not green—like everything else in the book, he was black and white with some red and pink splotches. Answers: 1. Just North of Who-ville 2. Every Who down in Who-ville would start singing 3. Cindy-Lou Who. 4. The Who's were singing. 5. 3 sizes 6. Max

hile you’re W making your list and

checking it twice this holiday season, don’t forget to include your local independent business owners. They’re not asking for much this year, just a little support. And you’d be smart to give it.

A substantially larger percentage of your hard-earned money stays in your community when you choose to shop locally for Christmas instead of leaving the area.

Recent studies have shown that as much as $75 of every $100 you spend at a locally owned businesses remains in your area,

versus $40 at non-locally owned establishments. This number, in most cases, drops to zero dollars when you buy online. PUT YOUR MONEY TO WORK

More money staying local means increased funding for the schools, hospitals, and roads that you and your friends, family and co-workers depend on. Since local business owners hire local workers – about half of all private sector workers are employed in small businesses, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics – money for taxes and wages stays in the community, too.

With volatile unemployment statistics linked so closely to the success or failure of small businesses, shopping locally can actually make a positive impact on a national level.

money to help support local groups. RIPPLE EFFECT

Small business owners have a tendency to buy supplies locally and to use local services for their business needs. When an independent business owner requires accounting services or help with building repairs, they are more likely to spend their money on local accountants or contractors, respectively. When you shop local, your money helps catalyze the circulation of money through your area. It also strengthens your community’s economic foundation and helps enhance it for years to come.

Joyous holiday wishes to you and your family...

EVERYBODY WINS

Small business owners are also more likely to make social investments in the community by volunteering at their child’s school, donating to charities and hosting fundraiser events. Doing so allows these entrepreneurs to integrate themselves into their communities and make it known that they are receptive and sensitive to the needs of those around them. From little league teams to theater groups, small business owners are quick to offer their sponsorship and

from your good neighbor. May all your wishes come true this wondrous season. Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there.ÂŽ

sugar levels, among other things. In addition to these vitamins, turkey also is rich in many minerals, including iron, phosphorous, potassium, and zinc. While turkey is healthy, the way it is prepared can affect just how beneficial it is to one’s diet. For example, slathering the meat with butter or dousing it in rich gravies may negate some of turkey’s positive attributes. One of the most popular ways to cook turkey is to roast it. Let fresh herbs and a citrus juice marinade add the desired flavor. Place the turkey on a roasting rack so that any fat will drain to the bottom of the pan. Baste the turkey with fresh marinade to keep it moist. It’s best to cook any stuffing outside of the turkey so there is no potential for contamination by bacteria. Make stuffing healthier by using whole-grain rice, vegetables, dried fruits, and nuts in lieu of a heavy bread base. Leftover roasted turkey can be ground and used to make tacos and burgers or chopped and turned into turkey salad. The possibilities for leftover turkey are endless, especially for cooks willing to try their hands at something new.

Thousands of people line the streets of midtown Manhattan every year to catch a glimpse of the balloons and performers marching in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Millions more will tune in to watch it on television. The Macy's parade is intertwined with Thanksgiving, making it as much a part of the holiday as turkey and pumpkin pie. The parade has evolved throughout the years, and the history of the parade is both interesting and informational. Historians believe the parade was instituted by European immigrants who made up the majority of employees at the retail giant Macy's. In the 1920s, employees who were now proud Americans wanted to celebrate with traditions that were similar to traditions in Europe. This included a parade down the streets. Animals were borrowed from the Central Park Zoo, bands played and

marchers wore different costumes. In 1927, concern for children lining the parade route led parade officials to replace live animals with the signature helium balloons people now know and love. A dragon and Felix the Cat were some of the first balloons. The festivities continued to grow during the 1930s, when Santa was added to the parade's growing list of participants. 1933 was the only year that Santa led the parade rather than closed it. During World War II, the parade was put on hiatus, as the rubber for the balloons and the helium was donated to the war effort. The parade resumed in 1945 and was televised only in New York. The 1947 film "Miracle on 34th Street" made the parade even more popular. NBC televised the parade nationwide the following year, drawing viewers from all over the country.

Turkeys are seemingly everywhere come November, whether it’s at your favorite grocery store, on television cooking shows and possibly hanging out in the wild of a nearby nature preserve. Turkeys are the main course for many holiday dinners, and turkey leftovers also make for popular meals once holidays have come and gone. Although turkeys earn most of their attention during the holiday season, their health benefits can be enjoyed throughout the year. Turkey contains roughly 34 calories and 1 gram of fat per ounce (33 grams) of meat. It is low in saturated fat and is a good source of protein. In fact, just one 3 to 4 ounce serving of turkey provides 65 percent of a person’s recommended daily intake of protein. Protein helps fuel the body and can help a person feel full longer. People who are customizing their diets to protect against cancer may want to include turkey on the menu. Turkey contains selenium, which can promote healthy function of the thyroid and boost the immune system. Selenium also helps to eliminate free radicals in the body through its antioxidant power. Those who need to increase their B vitamin intake also can turn to turkey. According to Livestrong, a serving of turkey has 36 percent of the daily allowance of vitamin B3, which helps process fats in the body. It also contains 27 percent of the RDA for vitamin B6, which helps maintain steady blood

Gratin of Eggs, Leeks, Bacon, and St. André Cheese (Serves 6) 1

baguette, about 21⁄2 to 3 inches in diameter 6 thick slices bacon, cut into 1-inch pieces 2 cups chopped leeks, white and light green parts 6 ounces St. André cheese, well chilled (see note) 6 eggs 21⁄2 cups half-and-half 1⁄2 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon minced flat-leaf parsley or chives

Unsalted butter, for the baking dish Generous 2 pinches of cayenne pepper

1. Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 350 F. Generously butter a 9- by 13inch baking dish.

2. Cut enough 1⁄2-inch-thick slices from the baguette to make a single layer in the baking dish. (You will probably need between 20 and 24 slices; save extra slices for another use.)

4. Pour off all but 1 tablespoon of the drippings and return the frying pan to medium heat. Add the leeks and cook, stirring, until just softened, 4 to 5 minutes. Sprinkle the leeks and bacon over the bread slices in the baking dish.

5. Cut the St. André cheese with its rind into 1⁄2inch cubes and scatter them over the leeks and bacon in the baking dish. In a medium bowl, whisk the eggs to blend, and then whisk in the half-and-half, salt and cayenne. Pour the mixture into the baking dish. Let the gratin stand at least 1 hour, or cover the pan with plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. (If the dish has been refrigerated, let it stand at room temperature for 30 minutes before baking if you have time. It also can go directly from the refrigerator to the oven but will take longer to cook.) 6. Bake the gratin until the egg mixture is set, the top is golden and the mixture is bubbly, 40 to 45 minutes (10 to 15 minutes longer if straight from the refrigerator). Remove and let cool for about 5 minutes. Sprinkle with minced parsley and serve hot. (Note: St. André cheese is a mild, triple-cream French cheese with a white rind. It is available at many grocers and cheese stores. If you are unable to find it, you can substitute a triplecream Brie.)

trees, and songs are sung with family members who come from near and far to share gifts and companionship. Families with young children often make visiting Santa Claus a part of their annual traditions. During the holiday season, Santa can be found taking up residence in department stores and malls across the country. Thousands of children and their parents will wait in line to get some face time with jolly old St. Nick. The following are a handful of ways to make kids’ visits with Santa even more pleasant. Do a test run. If your child has not taken a photo with Santa before, he or she may be frightened and the result will be a poor photograph. The beard and the red coat coupled with the fact that kids are sitting on a stranger’s lap can be terrifying for youngsters. Acclimate your child to the experience by visiting the mall to see Santa and become familiar with what he looks like and how he acts. It may take a couple of visits before your child is ready to wait in line for the real visit. Go off-peak. Visit Santa when the store just opens or when lines are not as long, such as during school hours or dinner time. This should cut down on the wait and create a less tense experience. Confirm visiting hours so you don’t arrive only to find he’s out to lunch or feeding his reindeer. Do not schedule anything after the Santa visit, so you don’t feel rushed. Dress comfortably. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing so neither you nor the kids will be uncomfortable. The goal is to look nice for the photo, but not at the expense of the children’s comfort level. And while you should be comfortable as well, be sure to look presentable, in the event

you have to hop into the photo if that’s the only way your son or daughter will tolerate the experience. Pack some supplies. Bring snacks and drinks for the kids so hunger does not make them antsy. Bring along a change of clothes in case someone spills food or spits up before your turn. Get Santa recommendations. Ask friends and neighbors which Santas they visit. Many stores will have a Santa on hand, but not every Santa is as adept at handling children. You want someone who is used to making children feel welcome and comfortable. Above all, try to have a good time and don’t expect perfection. Sometimes the best Santa-visit moments are the ones that are unrehearsed.

real tree can employ some strategies to minimize the mess. Buy a fresh tree

Face a tree’s trunk toward the front of the car to prevent needles from becoming loose and falling off in your home.

A

Christmas tree is often the centerpiece of holiday decorating. Trees come in many shapes and sizes, both real and artificial. Those looking for a more authentic tree gravitate toward real trees, with their rich, earthy smell and beautiful boughs of green. While the sights and smells of real trees are what draw many people in, live trees do require more maintenance than their artificial alternatives. Falling pine needles and sap are part of the live-tree package, as is regular watering and some initial tree preparation. However, those who have their hearts set on a

Christmas tree lots may begin to crop up before Thanksgiving, meaning trees will have been cut and shipped weeks before. The tree you put up in your home may be at least two months old by Christmas Day. Also, trees that are open to full sunlight at tree lots can dry out prematurely. When shopping, look for trees that seem freshly cut and have good needle retention. Grab a branch and see if the needles remain intact. Give the tree trunk a bump on the ground and assess how many needles drop to the ground. Look at the color of the tree and determine if it is wilting. These may be signs that the tree is old and on its last legs. Choose the right variety

Some varieties of tree have more staying power after being cut than others. So-called “true firs,” such as noble, Fraser, Nordmann, and Turkish, usually last the longest. Douglas fir, Scotch pine, balsam, and grand fir trees also last long after being cut. Spruce trees, which are usually the least expensive variety on lots, may only last two to three weeks. Wrap and transport Ask the tree seller to freshly cut the bottom of the tree and wrap the entire tree in twine so it will be easier to move. Place the tree on the roof of your car with the trunk facing the front of the car. This way the wind will not fan out the

branches and loosen up needles. Choose the right location

It may seem like a good idea to put the tree right in front of a picture window, but if that window receives ample sunlight, the tree may dry out more quickly, leading to falling needles. The same can be said for putting a tree too close to a heating source, like a fireplace, radiator or heating vent. A cool, shaded area is best for keeping trees fresher longer. Fit the tree in the stand while it is still outdoors and wrapped up and then move the entire product inside to the right spot. This helps minimize dirt, bark and needles getting all over the room. Time your removal

to make its exit before it withers. A tree can drink a gallon of water per day, so make sure the stand reservoir is adequately filled. Over time, though, the tree may stop taking in water. When this happens, it is best to take down the decorations and get ready for removal. Hiding a tree disposal bag under the tree skirt can make it easier to get the tree out to the curb. Some people find there’s less mess by clipping off the branches and removing them in one lump, rather than navigating a full tree through small doorways. Real Christmas trees can enhance holiday season ambiance and set the scene for the festivities to come. With the right care and prep work, homeowners can cut down on the mess associated with fresh trees.

Leaving cookies and milk for Santa Claus is a Christmas Eve tradition. Children regularly place a dish of cookies and a glass of milk by the tree on Christmas Eve so that Santa has enough energy to complete all of his giftgiving before kids wake up on Christmas morning. The tradition of leaving cookies out on Christmas Eve may trace its origins to Saint Nicholas. On the feast of St. Nicholas on December 6, children would leave food and drink for the saint and any attendants. The treats would be exchanged for gifts. While that’s one theory behind the tradition, others think it is linked to the history of the Christmas tree and the edible decorations that adorn it. Santa would snack on the ornaments. Even after edible decorations gave way to inedible ornaments, the tradition of leaving a snack for Santa remained. Whatever the origins behind the tradition, millions of children dutifully leave milk and cookies for Santa on Christmas Eve.

A Tasty Treat for Holiday Guests

H H osting family and friends is one of the joys of the holiday season. for many families, holiday gatherings are the one time of year when all family members get together to enjoy time as a family.

Holiday hosts not only have a lot on their plates, but they also want to ensure their guests end up with lots on their plates. food plays a central role at holiday parties and dinners, and hosts who want to try their hand at creating a decadent treat their guests have likely never tasted before, can consider the following recipe for “Aint luverta’s Dr. Pepper Cake” courtesy of Patty Pinner’s “Sweets: Soul food Desserts & Memories” (Ten Speed Press).

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 5 • 2015

Aint luverta’s Dr. Pepper Cake Makes one 9- by 13-inch cake

Cake 2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted 1 teaspoon baking soda 2 cups granulated sugar 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter 11⁄2 cups miniature marshmallows 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder 1 cup Dr. Pepper 2 eggs 11⁄2 cups buttermilk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Dr. Pepper frosting 1⁄2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened 6 tablespoons Dr. Pepper 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder 1 1-pound box confectioners’ sugar, sifted 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup chopped pecans

Instructions: Preheat the oven to 350 F. Grease, but do not flour, a 9x13 inch pan. Set it aside.

To make the cake, in a large bowl, sift together the flour and baking soda. Gradually stir in the sugar. Set aside.

In a saucepan, heat the butter, marshmallows, cocoa, and Dr. Pepper. Stir constantly until the butter and the marshmallows are melted. Do not allow the mixture to boil. Pour the marshmallow mixture over the flour mixture. Beat well. Set side. In another bowl, beat the eggs until they are light and fluffy. Stir in the buttermilk and vanilla extract. Mix well. Beat the egg mixture into the flour mixture until well blended and the batter is smooth. Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Bake for 50 to 55 minutes, or until the center of cake springs back when lightly touched. Let the cake cool on a rack for 10 minutes.

To make the frosting, in a saucepan, combine the butter, Dr. Pepper and cocoa powder. Bring the mixture to a boil over low heat, stirring constantly. Remove the pan from the heat. Gradually stir in the confectioners’ sugar until the mixture is smooth, then fold in the vanilla extract and pecans. Spread over the warm cake. CLOSED iving Thanksg

Cooking is only part

of Thanksgiving prep. for many hosts, carving the bird represents the most intimidating feast feat. Don’t chicken out! There are some quick tips you can follow to demystify the process, from the carving experts at Smith’s Housewares, a manufacturer of innovative knife sharpeners and kitchen tools: • The first thing you will want to carve out is a proper amount of time to cook the turkey. When coordinating your schedule that morning, keep in mind that between taking the turkey out of the oven and cooking it, you should allot about 20 minutes. This waiting period is not frivolous. It makes the

Thoughtful Stocking

Stuffers for the Holiday Season

(StatePoint) While the big ticket items are always a thrill to bestow and receive during the holidays, sometimes smaller stocking stuffers are the most needed and appreciated. Here are some ideas to get you started:

handling of the hot turkey easier on your hands, and gives the meat’s juices crucial time to redistribute.

• If your turkey is tied, remove the string first. Start by removing each leg and thigh from the body of the turkey, using your hands to separate, and your knife to slice through the meat. • Next, separate the thighs from the legs by pulling on a leg and using your knife to slice. Target the ‘V’ area with your knife, feeling around until you find the joint. Slice the meat away from the thigh bone and place it directly on your serving platter. • The next step is to remove the wings using a similar method. By identifying where the joint is; you can avoid slicing bone.

• Using an even stroke, slice each breast from slightly off the midline. Slice down, gently pulling the breast away on the side you’ve chosen. Slice each breast into quarter inch thick slices. Place on your platter. Alternatively, cut Tech Accessories - Gifting new tech devices? Be sure you also equip recipients with all the accessories they will need to enjoy their gifts on-the-go. From hard shell cases that offer protection from slips and drops, (as these incidents are bound to occur) to app store gift cards for quick downloading of the software needed to make the most of these items. Batteries Included! Nothing kills the thrill of receiving a new device quite like the phrase “batteries not included.” From

slices of breast directly off the turkey, parallel to the rib cage. Just ensure you keep the slices even on both sides.

• Be a sharp chef. To make the job smooth sailing, and avoid tearing the meat and making a mess, use a sharp, straightedge knife and a carving fork to steady your meat. You’ll save time and energy and get better results.

and vegetables all work well to complete the look.

Don’t let the final throes of preparation be the most difficult on Turkey Day. All you need are the right, well-maintained tools and proper technique.

• In the days leading up to the holiday, make sure your kitchen is ready to go by sharpening all the knives you will need for food prep that day, particularly your turkey carving knife. A compact electric knife sharpener is a great kitchen essential to have on hand for everyday use, as well as for major holiday feasts, as it is ideal for precise sharpening of straight edge knives. Those from Smith’s Housewares feature a manual slot for polishing a freshly ground edge or a quick touch-up of already sharp knives. They can be found at walmart.com.

• Add a garnish to the serving platter to make your turkey a feast for the eyes. As the main course, it deserves a bit of extra flair. Fresh in-season herbs, fruits remote-controlled cars to digital cameras, gift recipients won’t want to just look at their new toys, they’ll want to use them right away! Avoid disappointment by providing juice for all those battery-operated goodies. Consider pairing cutting edge gifts with cutting edge Energizer EcoAdvanced AA and AAA batteries. They are the brand’s longest-lasting alkaline battery and the world’s first AA battery made with four percent recycled batteries. To learn more, visit energizer.com/ecoadvanced.

Travel - For those loved ones who have traveled to spend the holidays with you, consider a thoughtful gift that can be used during the journey home. From travel-sized board games to snack packs or tiny notebooks, these items will come in handy whether gift recipients are traveling by plane, train or automobile. This year, don’t forget the stocking stuffers -- they are a great opportunity to show your loved ones just how thoughtful you are.

“PROFOUND GRATITUDE”

“Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!” – 2 Corinthians 9:15 (NIV)

The word profound may be defined as something which is deeply felt, fathomless and beyond description. Other synonyms for the same word (in various translations of the Bible) include: • Unspeakable – K.J.V. • Inexpressible – RSV • Inestimable – TCNT • Incomparable – LAM • Beyond words – NEB

INDOOR FARMERS’ MARKET Plainwell City Hall - 211 N. Main St.

Saturdays from 10AM - 2PM Nov. 28th • Dec. 5, 12 & 19 Local Honey, Jams & Jellies, Herbs, Produce, Soup Mixes, Breads & Baked Goods Ready to Eat Soup & Chili

When I ponder the meaning of profound gratitude, I think of people who were thankful, but did not have any human reason to be thankful such as:

Crafters & Artisans Music Every Day!

• Apostle Paul as he faced death (“For me to live is Christ and dying is gain” (Philippians 1:21)

• Ignatius, Bishop of Antioch in the early Christian church who said, “I would rather die and get to Jesus Christ than reign over the ends of the earth.”

• Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who was executed in a Nazi concentration camp on August 8, 1945 speaking to his fellow prisoners on his way toward the gallows, “This is the end, but for me the beginning of life.” It is easy to be thankful when things are going well, but what about those times when things are not going well?

Our supreme example is Jesus Christ “… who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:2) He was joyful not because He was going to die on a cross, but because He could see beyond vicarious suffering to His home in heaven.

NOVEMBER is...

Homelessness Awareness Month at CHRISTIAN NEIGHBORS

COMMUNITY SHOPPERS GUIDE...OTSEGO, MI 49078...November 21, 2015....Phone 694-9431

What Does “Homeless” Mean?

Defining homelessness is not as simple as it sounds. Various grants/funding streams define it differently, what community you live in impacts how people describe it, and our own personal beliefs vary. In our rural community we rarely see people sleeping on the streets as you would in urban areas. We also don’t have a shelter where people can go for a safe and warm place to spend the night.

Most often our neighbors that suffer homelessness spend their nights “couch surfing” and their days trying to secure whose couch they can sleep on that night. Homelessness in Allegan County also means people sleeping in campers, tents, and their cars. It means either having to pay for a storage unit to keep what little belongings you have or giving them up in order to be able to travel easily.

This year alone Christian Neighbors has served 91 households that are homeless. Last year in Allegan County literally 197 homeless individuals/families sought services from area providers to secure housing. Of those, about 10% were staying in the Plainwell area; 5% in the Otsego area; and about 1/2% in the Martin area. These individuals and families are our neighbors.

Please help us help them.

Your generosity helps support our Emergency Financial Assistance Program which helps people secure housing and prevent homelessness.

EVERYONE WINS when you help us help others in our community and if your donation slip is chosen, you may also win a prize! Please tear out the coupon below and mail it back with your financial support.
