65% OF NEW JOBS CREATED BY SMALL BUSINESSES

The vast majority of new jobs are created by small businesses, meaning those with fewer than 500 employees. According to the United States Small Business Administration, 65 percent of America’s new jobs in the past 17 years have been created by small businesses. In fact, small businesses make up 99.7 percent of all employer firms in the United States, the SBA says.

Feel Needed

L

ocal business owners treat you with respect and kindness because they need your support. Your money keeps their dreams alive, their families fed and their lights on.

It also helps fuel their innovation — an attribute that we depend on from small business owners to help our communities become better places to work, play and stay. Local owners are quick to converse with you and ask about your life because they are genuinely interested in learning about their customers. Gaining a better understating of their target audience helps owners improve their services, which in turn boosts their bottom line.

RETURN THE FAVOR T Since it is better to give than

to receive, reciprocate the appreciation by getting to know your local owners by name and tell them that you appreciate what they’re doing for your community. A positive word of encouragement can go a long way toward boosting the confidence of small business owners, many of whom are nurturing their goals one day at a time. Friendly banter is a cornerstone of downtown America and is what helps set small businesses apart in the realm of quality customer service.

BUILD RELATIONSHIPS

It is always a good idea to cultivate and maintain positive relationships with those who

need you most. Whether you’re enjoying a friendly chit-chat with your favorite barista at your local coffeehouse or catching up with your regular server at the downtown pizza establishment, you are unknowingly building and advancing relationships. These interactions will make future shopping visits more conversational and enjoyable and will add value to both the employer and customer experience.

NETWORK

Shopping locally can also help you and your career. Hand over your business card while discussing the weather with your local business owners. You never know what services they may need or who they may know that could spark new business opportunities for your enterprise.

Small business owners can appreciate the benefits of networking, because they use it as a critical tool to promote their services and expand their reach. You can do the same.

Twice as much CHARITABLE GIVING FROM SMALL FIRMS A 1991 study examined charitable donations from businesses and found something surprising: Companies with fewer than 100 employees gave an average of $789 per employee. That’s compared with just $334 per employee at firms with more than 500 employees. It’s another reason why shopping at small, locally owned firms can help your community.

Slow Down

T

is the season to be jolly, not stressed, frenzied, or road-raged. Trade in the hustle and bustle of long car rides and over-packed malls for a relaxing stroll through your T favorite downtown business.. The benefits of slowing things down over the holidays can improve your health, well-being, and overall mood, especially when schedules are at their fullest. The less time you spend traveling great distances and drudging through hoards of shoppers, the more time you will be able to enjoy with your family around the fireplace. So maybe it’s time to focus less on leaving the area and take advantage of the calming convenience of shopping local.

the customer count when you visit a local business. Your patronage matters to owners and employees because your dollars keep them employed. Workers at all organizational levels – owners, managers, full-time workers, and part-timers, alike – are depending on your business.

TEACH THE KIDS

It’s never too early to pass on the values that drive you to shop local and support your neighbors. Your sons, daughters, nieces and nephews will earn money and shop for themselves one day, and they may even be future small business owners. Bringing them along for the shopping trip to your favorite downtown store will give them a great understanding of the benefits of spending money locally and may spark an entrepreneurial spirit within them.

GET A HISTORY LESSON

The next time you are perusing through a downtown business, ask yourself if you know the history of the building you are in. No? Odds are the owner does. Independent business owners are often excellent sources for local history and interesting anecdotes. They can give you detailed information about their buildings or the services that used to be offered through it because they are privy to past records and business documentation. Shopping locally doesn’t just enhance the local economy. It can also increase your knowledge of your surroundings.

1,838 MILES A CARROT WILL TRAVEL BEFORE GETTING TO YOUR TABLE

According to a 2003 study conducted in Iowa, a carrot from conventional sources will travel 1,838 miles before reaching the dinner table. The same carrot grown locally would travel just 27 miles. While this is an extreme example, it shows how small businesses that source more of their inventory from local suppliers can have a big, positive impact on the environment because of less fuel use and lower emissions from transportation.

local businesses – and if you don’t mind the chilly weather – walk or ride your bike to the store. The central locations of downtown businesses helps provide a hub of shopping activity that requires only a short stroll down the sidewalk to shop door-to-door. Mixing in a little physical activity as opposed to spending hours in your car or extended periods of time on escalators, will aid in burning calories and improving your overall health. And better health is a gift we all deserve.

TAKE IT EASY

Do you really want to spend multiple hours of your weekend inside a car? How about standing in long lines waiting for a harried cashier to ring up your order? Local businesses won’t delay your service or make it seemingly impossible to find a parking spot. There won’t be any fights for shopping carts or that under-produced product, either. Instead, local businesses offer a more laid-back experience centered on quality customer service and friendly conversations. Local owners are invested in creating positive, memorable experiences for all customers, and this means fostering lowstress, no-hassle shopping environments.

(StatePoint) Thanksgiving can mean too many cooks in the kitchen, so consider taking some prep outside. While grilling is usually associated with more Americans are summer, recognizing its year-round potential. In fact, 80 percent of North American households own a grill or smoker and 60 percent use it year-round, according to recent statistics from the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association. It’s no surprise that many Thanksgiving recipes can be reinvented outdoors. “Grilling your bird over lump charcoal creates a succulent, flavorful entrée,” says Don Crace, President of Cowboy Charcoal, a brand that caters to grilling purists of the charcoal variety. For a uniquely smoky flavor sure to impress the crowd, try this recipe for Cowboy’s Perfect Bourbon-Maple Smoked Turkey:

Ingredients • 1 thawed or fresh turkey • 1 onion • 2-3 garlic cloves • 3 sprigs rosemary • 3 sprigs thyme • 1 bay leaf • Olive oil • Salt (at least 2 cups) • Pepper • Cowboy All Natural Lump Charcoal • Hickory wood chips • 1 cup bourbon • 1/2 cup real maple syrup

Directions • Remove neck, giblets and excess fat from turkey. Make gravy from giblets and neck, if desired. • Completely rinse turkey inside and out. • Place turkey in large brining bag that will fit in your refrigerator. • Create brine with 2 gallons water (or enough to cover turkey), 2 cups salt, 1 cup bourbon and 1/2 cup maple syrup. • Refrigerate at least four hours. • Remove turkey from brine, rinse and thoroughly pat dry. • Add onion (sliced in half), garlic cloves, rosemary, thyme and bay leaf to inside of turkey. Season the inside with salt and pepper. • Tie legs together with cooking string and twist wing tips under the back or cover with foil to prevent burning.

• Brush outside of turkey with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. • Soak a full package of Cowboy’s Hickory Wood Chips in a large bowl for 30 minutes. • Place a foil pan below the grate on one side of grill to catch drippings. To prevent excess smoke, fill it halfway with water. • On the other side of grill, add two pounds charcoal and light it. • Drain water from wood chips. • When lump charcoal is ash gray, add about one cup of wood chips to the fire. Place grate back on grill. Let preheat for about 10 minutes. • Arrange turkey on the grate, above the pan. • Place lid on grill and cook turkey for approximately 15 to 20 minutes per pound, until internal temperature reaches 180 degrees. • Add additional wood chips and charcoal every 30 minutes or as needed. • When done, transfer turkey to serving platter, cover with foil and let stand 15 to 20 minutes before carving.

5. Yukon Cornelius referred to the fog being "As thick as ______"? 6. What is the name of the Lion King on the Island of Misfit Toys? 7. On the Island of Misfit Toys, what did the water pistol shoot instead of water? 8. What was the name of the young doe (girl) reindeer that told Rudolf that he was cute?

Did You Know?

1. In the 1964 classic Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer, what was the name of the elf that wanted to be a dentist? 2. What was the snowman narrator of the show's name? 3. What was Rudolph's father's name?

4. What was the name of the coach of the Reindeer Games?

Answers: 1. Hermie 2. Sam The Snowman 3. Donner 4. Comet 5. Peanut Butter 6. King Moonraiser 7. Jelly 8. Clarice

Can You Answer these Questions?

In the original TV version of the show, Rudolph, Hermie the elf and Yukon Cornelius visit the Island of Misfit Toys and promise to help them, but the Misfits are never mentioned again. After it was shown, the producers were inundated with letters from children complaining that nothing had been done to help the Misfit Toys. In response, Rankin-Bass produced a new short scene at the end of the show in which Santa and his reindeer, led by Rudolph, land on the Island and pick up all the toys to find homes for them, which has ever since been the standard version of the show run during the holidays.

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE | FOOD & WINE

Enjoy the Holidays without the Weight Gain

(StatePoint) On average, Americans gain weight during the holiday season. While the weight gain may not be dramatic, research shows it tends to stick and accumulate over the years. But you don’t have to succumb to this progression, say experts. “There are strategic steps to avoid holiday weight gain while still enjoying friends, family and holiday feasts,” says Sonya Angelone, registered dietitian nutritionist and Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics spokesperson. In preparation for a big holiday party or feast, do not skip meals throughout the day. This may result in overeating later. “It is especially important to eat breakfast,” says Angelone. “High-fiber and high-protein foods like oatmeal and milk with fruit, an egg and spinach on whole wheat toast, Greek yogurt with nuts, or nut butter on a whole-wheat English muffin will satisfy hunger without a lot of calories.” Holiday meals tend to be large or buffet-style and include second and third helpings. While most people wouldn’t consider eating an entire cake, a common mistake is eating large portions of foods that are perceived as healthful. To avoid overeating, use a smaller

plate. It will encourage proper portion sizes. Also, start by filling your plate with vegetables and salad before going to the entrees and desserts. Research shows eating a salad before your meal can help you eat fewer calories overall. Eat slowly and savor every bite. Before you go back for seconds, wait 10 minutes to see if you really are still hungry. Including nutrient-rich foods in your diet is great, just remember that these foods have calories too, which should be taken into consideration with your whole eating plan. “And be mindful of alcohol consumption. Drink more water throughout a party to quench your thirst and help keep the cocktails to one or two,” says Angelone. Remember to include at least 30 minutes of physical activity into your day to promote health during the holidays -and be sure to involve the whole family For more healthy holiday tips and information, consult a registered dietitian nutritionist. To learn more and find an RDN in your area, visit www.eatright.org. Having healthful eating and exercise plans for holiday meals will help ensure success throughout the season and all year long.

Lighting a Christmas tree may seem like child's play, but time and again people struggle with the task. Untangling wires and wrapping them around boughs can be nerve wracking, but lighting a tree doesn't have to be a chore when you follow some tips from the professionals. First, keep in mind that wrapping lights around the tree horizontally is more work and often doesn't produce a multidimensional effect. Rather, string the lights from the trunk up to the top, working vertically. This is actually how the tree decorators at Rockefeller Center in New York City do the famous tree year after year. This method helps eliminate tangled wires and empty spots. Remember to plug in the strands of lights before you begin to check for burnt-out bulbs and to adjust the spacing of lights to prevent dark spots. Think about varying light bulb sizes to add more dimension. String an inner layer of small LED white lights to produce an inner glow on the tree before

adding larger, colored lights on top to increase visual appeal. Just be sure to match the same wattage of the lights so that you do not have power surges and can prolong the life of the bulbs.

vegetable and flower gardening can be found at www.AeroGarden.com. Bird Feeder - Help your favorite gardener attract pollinators and add a touch of beauty to the garden with a unique bird feeder. The birds attracted by the feeder will do more than bring beauty to the recipient’s garden – they can help cross pollinate plants and flowers, as well. If you’re crafty, consider making it yourself, or use an online marketplace to find a unique, hand-crafted or vintage treasure. And if your recipient is crafty, consider giving him or her a do-ityourself feeder or birdhouse kit. This holiday season, skip the generic presents and be a bit more thoughtful. For friends and family, there are plenty of ways you can support a new or lifelong, year-round gardening habit.

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE | FOOD & WINE

Food and Wine Pairing Tips for the Holiday Season

GOLF COURSE

SANTA SAYS THE (StatePoint) One of the most important aspects of holiday entertaining is sometimes overlooked -- proper pairing of the food and wine. Even if you have a bottle of top quality wine and an amazing chef-inspired dish, without considering how the food and drink combine, you can ruin the taste of both, say experts. One commonly mismatched wine is Cabernet Sauvignon. “I have a simple goal with food and wine pairings: don’t mess with the taste of the wine,” says Dean Busquaert, a wine educator at Sequoia Grove Winery, a pioneering Cabernet Sauvignon producer in the heart of Rutherford in Napa Valley. Bold, full-flavored reds like Cabernet Sauvignon will overpower light dishes, but are excellent when served with rich meats like a roast, making them perfect for the holidays. Busquaert, who often shares his pairing wisdom at the Sequoia Grove tasting room, offers some invaluable pairing tips for home cooks planning to serve a Cabernet Sauvignon at their festivities. • The number one thing to avoid pairing with Cabernet Sauvignon is sugar, which will throw off the tannin balance of the wine and make it seem astringent and bitter. For example, many people think chocolates pair well with red wine however, they don`t -- unless it is a port which has residual sugar. Sugar content, whether it comes from fruits like grapes or apples, or honey and chocolate, is simply not a good choice for Cabernet Sauvignon. • To make a Cabernet Sauvignon taste more velvety, pair it to dishes high in acidity. For example, adding a splash of lemon to a dish can smooth out a big and structured Cabernet Sauvignon. • Don’t be fooled by conventional wisdom. Some rules do not apply across the board. “Most people think red wine always goes with red meat, only to discover a dish like beef teriyaki, which contains sugar, can make a beautiful Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon seem undrinkable,” says Busquaert. • Use salt liberally to bring out the full flavor in foods, without throwing off the flavors of your wine. • A great meal deserves a great wine, and the Napa Valley has come to define great Cabernet Sauvignon in America. Look for established and trusted producers, such as Sequoia Grove Winery, with a history of making quality balanced and food-friendly wines. Knowledge is crucial to the appreciation and enjoyment of fine wine. Join Busquaert for his “A Taste for Cabernet” seminar at the winery and learn for yourself how to best match food with Cabernet Sauvignon. Visit www.sequoiagrove.com/visitus for more information. Food pairings are an essential ingredient to a successful holiday party. Don’t overlook this important element when planning your menu.

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE |

The holiday season has arrived, and millions of people across the globe will be celebrating Christmas with their families and friends. The following are some interesting tidbits to share with your loved ones this holiday season.

• Each year, more than three billion Christmas cards are sent in the United States alone.

• In 350 AD, Pope Julius I, bishop of Rome, proclaimed December 25 the official celebration date for the birth of Jesus Christ. Many historians and theologians have surmised that Christ really wasn’t born this time of year, thanks to imagery and information from the Bible. • Christmas carols began as an English custom called “wassailing.” Individuals toasted neighbors to a long and healthy life.

• Despite the common tale that three wise men paid homage to baby Jesus, the Bible never specifically calls out a number. Similarly, there’s no specific indication that they visited the infant Jesus. Their visit may have occurred when Jesus was older. • Santa Claus’ modern look was inspired by writings from The Knickerbockers of New York and imagery from Clement Clarke Moore’s “A Visit from St. Nicholas.” Moore denied authoring the famous poem for 15 years after it was published anonymously, feeling the poem was beneath his talents. • Santa has his own official postal code. It’s H0 H0 H0.

• The song “Jingle Bells” was originally written for Thanksgiving and not Christmas. People loved it so much that the lyrics were changed to fit Christmas. • Christmas trees typically grow for 15 years before they’re cut and sold. This means the trees sold today were likely planted in 1999. • Christmas was not declared an official holiday in the United States until June 26, 1870.

• Before turkey, the traditional Christmas meal served in England was a pig’s head and mustard.

• Male reindeer tend to shed their antlers in the winter. This means Santa’s reindeer are likely female.

• Christ may have been born in a cave rather than a manger. According to the gospel of Luke, the shepherds that helped find shelter for Mary to give birth kept their flock in a cave. The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem is built over a cave called the Grotto of the Nativity, where Jesus is believed to have been born.

• Many people may be less inclined to stand under mistletoe waiting for a kiss if they knew what “mistletoe” means in the ancient Germanic language. It literally means “dung on a twig,” for the bird who eats the berries and then leaves seeds in droppings to propagate new plants.

• Each holiday season, PNC Wealth Management calculates the costs of the gifts in the song, “The 12 Days of Christmas.” The price index for the gifts went from $12,673 in 1984 to more than $24,000 in 2011. The most expensive gift is the swimming swans.

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE | BACK TO BASICS...

Gifts That Inspire The Imagination T

hough it may seem that all of the high-demand gift items this season require batteries and a level of tech savvy only the younger generation can boast, there are actually many great options that let you encourage the kids on your list to get back to basics and get unplugged.

(Family Features) According to research by Common Sense Media, kids under eight spend nearly two hours of every day on screen time - that is, using a tablet, computer or mobile device, watching TV, etc. While some of that usage is

dedicated to educational games and content, the prevalence of media use among kids is distracting them from one of childhood's greatest gifts: the freedom to let their imaginations soar. Kids whose imaginative play is fostered and supported show numerous health and developmental advantages, ranging from increased levels of fitness and coordination to higher self-esteem and an improved ability to apply the information they learn. This holiday season, look for gifts that inspire kids to embrace pretend play: Blocks It doesn't get much more basic than building blocks when it comes to setting

the imagination free. Skip the sets that come with specific instructions and opt instead for blocks that encourage freeform play and construction. Small and mid-sized plastic pieces let kids create miniature versions of nearly anything their minds can conjure. On the flip side, jumbo cardboard blocks let children create environments they can physically engage with, such as life-size playhouses.

Figurines There are many figurines and accessories and customizable environments available to tickle kids' imagination. From auto service stations and race tracks to dollhouses and pet boutiques, little ones can explore and create for hours. For example, the Calico Critters toy line provides hours of wholesome and imaginative play. These adorable, high-quality miniature families of animals are paired with a selection of environments ranging from homes to shops to restaurants, along with complementary furnishings and accessories. These settings are similar to those in a child's life, making them more relatable and fun. For more information, visit www.calicocritters.com.

Dress up Whether you assemble a collection of whimsical treasures from thrift shops or rely on the costumes and sets available at retail stores, clothing that allows a child to adopt a new persona is an instant way to encourage the imagination. Costumes depicting familiar characters let kids act out their favorite screen-time scenes in real life, while a unique mish-mash of items lets them create unique scenarios to explore.

Books Good old-fashioned books help expose kids to new worlds. Chooseyour-own-adventure books, in which the reader helps direct the flow of the story line, are a great choice for engaging kids directly as they imagine their way through the story line. More traditional books introduce concepts, characters and scenarios that provide hours of play as kids act out the new ideas they discover.

Crafting sets From create-your-own jewelry to colorto-complete playhouses and spaceships, crafty gifts let kids explore their artistic side and experiment with creating tangible representations of their imagination. You can choose from prepackaged sets at many retailers, or crafting stores provide a diverse selection of unfinished items to pair with the appropriate tools. Toys and games that encourage pretend play let kids create, explore and imagine in a stress-free environment where they set the rules and boundaries. These gifts, which encourage kids to unplug and embrace a whole new world of wholesome play, are the kind you can feel truly great about giving.

CAR RENTAL On all repairs over $500

A Gift That Keeps Giving Encouraging kids to explore the world and learn through imaginative play has numerous benefits for their overall wellbeing. Giving gifts that encourage kids to use their imagination helps boost numerous long-term development skills.

Social development Creating characters and scripting scenes, whether alone or through play with others, teaches a child to consider other perspectives and fosters the growth of empathy and understanding.

Language Being allowed to create their own play environment, versus those delivered on a screen, forces children to rely on their vocabulary and practice using the words they've learned both informally and formally. Solitary play offers the benefit of allowing a child to practice these skills, while pretend play with peers encourages clear and effective communication with others.

Problem solving It's never too early for a child to begin developing cognitive thinking skills that allow them to effectively trouble-shoot and resolve problems. Even a simple play activity, such as contemplating what items from the dress-up drawer should be packed for an imaginary vacation, lets a little one begin to understand how to identify a challenge and create meaningful solutions.

Relationships Playing with others is a natural way for kids to forge meaningful bonds with other children, and with the adults in their lives. Imaginary play nurtures and lets children practice critical relationship-building skills such as communication. What's more, interacting through pretend play gives kids a shared experience that shapes a bond with their partner in play.

Helping Out During the Holidays This holiday season, Calico Critters is giving away $250 in merchandise to 40 lucky winners. Plus, for every dollar of merchandise the company gives away, toys of equivalent value will be donated to Toys for Tots and My Stuff Bags to help children in need. To learn more visit www.calicocrittersclub.com.

Place at least 1 inch apart on large sprayed baking sheets. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Bake at 350°F for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Serves 12

411 Oaks Crossing, Plainwell • 269-685-9908 - Across from Walmart -

Mon. - Thurs. 10am-8pm; Fri. & Sat. 10am-9pm; Sun. 12pm-6pm

ounces dark chocolate (60 to 70% cocoa solids), grated teaspoons ground ginger

ounces whole pieces preserved stem ginger, drained and roughly chopped stick (8 tablespoons) unsalted butter, softened

cup plus 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar, sifted (to remove lumps) medium eggs, beaten

teaspoon baking soda

tablespoons milk, warmed A pinch of salt

Extra-large crystallized ginger pieces, to scatter (optional)

A deep 8-inch square cake pan or 8 x 6 x 3-inch oval cake pan

Preheat the oven to 325 F. Grease and line the base and sides of the cake pan with nonstick parchment paper.

Put the molasses in a pan and heat gently until hot, but do not allow it to boil. Remove the pan from the heat and add the chocolate. Stir until melted. Sift the flour, ground ginger and salt together in a bowl. Add the stem ginger and toss it around in the flour until every piece is coated. Using an electric mixer, cream the butter and sugar in a large bowl. Beat in the eggs, then the molasses and chocolate mixture and finally the flour mixture. Dissolve the baking soda in the milk and gradually beat this into the batter.

Pour into the prepared cake pan, scatter with the crystallized ginger, if using, and bake for 45 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 300 F and bake for another 30 minutes. (If using the oval pan, cook for about 45 minutes at the higher temperature, then about 1 hour at the lower temperature, as it will be deeper.) A metal skewer inserted into the center should come out clean. Let cool for 5 minutes in the pan, then turn out onto a wire rack and let cool completely. When cold, store in an airtight container for at least a couple of days to mature and become sticky. Don’t worry if it sinks a bit in the middle — this is normal.

Happy Thanksgiving

“WHEN IT’S HARD TO BE THANKFUL”

“Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” – I Thessalonians 5:16-18

According to the above verse, it is the will of God that we be thankful in all circumstances. But we must all admit there are times when it is hard to be thankful. The key to understanding is the preposition in. Apostle Paul does not say, “Give thanks for all circumstances. He says to be thankful in them. We are not thankful for such things as human suffering and loss but we can be thankful in them. Why? • Come what may, God is with us. (Matthew 28:20) • Come what may, God is for us. (Romans 8:31) • Come what may, nothing can separate us from His love (Romans 8:38,39) Notable Examples: • Jesus Christ (Suffering Servant) • Apostle Paul (Christian martyr) • St. Francis of Assisi (who was voluntarily poor) • Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock (cold, hungry, afraid) • Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (Christian martyr) Gratitude is a true sign of the presence of Jesus Christ in our lives. So…when it’s hard to be thankful … keep on believing … keep on trusting … keep on loving and God will see you through. Prayer: Lord, give me a grateful heart. In Jesus’ name. Amen Peace to you and please join us for worship in a church where Jesus’ love is lived.

In Memory of John W. Clark

Barbara J. SWEET AGE 100 – ALAMO TWP

I cherish the memories we made together over our 35 years. I reflect back with smiles, some laughter, but still many a tear I shed. I look at your empty chair & wish I could see you there. I love you with all my heart & someday will be with you.

Barbara Sweet passed away Sunday, November 16, 2014 in Kalamazoo. Barb was born June 10, 1914 in Kalamazoo to Harry and Cora Belle (Hart) Baird and was raised by her mother and step-father, Sidney Maple. She was a 1932 graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School and was baptized in the First Presbyterian Church of Kalamazoo. Barb was a devoted homemaker and in her leisure time enjoyed gardening, knitting and exercising, especially walking. She maintained a good sense of humor and always took a personal interest in every person she met. Barb lived independently until age 99 at which time she moved into assisted living at Park Village Pines. She received much love and care from the staff there. Her 100th birthday celebration with family and friends was a very special day for her. It was a happy celebration that she spoke about often. Surviving are her daughter, Sue (Bill) Binning of Kalamazoo; four grandchildren, Brian (Susan) Binning, Jeff (Kate) Binning, Trent (Timberlie) Yanz and Deborah (Loli) Alharthi; eight great-grandchildren; a niece Carol Messner; and several cousins. In 1965 through an exchange program Janke Loenen Brans, from the Netherlands, has been like a daughter, and they have maintained a close contact since. Barb was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Robert Sweet in 2001; her daughter, Joan Marie Yanz in 1987; and her sister, Charlotte Hoft. Cremation has taken place and a private graveside service at Alamo Center Cemetery will be held on Tuesday, November 25, 2014, at 11:00 A.M., Chaplain Esther Sapp officiating. Contributions in memory of Barb may be made to the Kalamazoo Area Christian Retirement Association, Inc. (Park Village Pines Resident Fund) or the Kalamazoo Humane Society. Arrangements by Winkel Funeral Home Messages of condolence may be posted at www.WinkelFuneralHome.com

All my love forever & a day.

As people come for help at Christian Neighbors, we ask about their housing situation. If a family is homeless, they share with us if they are living with friends/family or if their situation would be considered inhabitable, such as living out of their car or perhaps sleeping outside. Of the two situations, we might think that some situations are better, and given the opportunity, living with friends or family would be preferred. Unfortunately, when I met Tanya that was not the case.

Tanya had served in the military since she graduated from high school. Many budget cuts were being made throughout the government and with that, the military had started downsizing. After 11 years of service, her job was cut. She had been out to sea when her husband was deployed with the reserves and their 4 children were living with her parents here in Michigan. With 10 days to pack up her family and find them somewhere to live (most of that time spent on the boat back to land), she chose to live in the same area as her sister. The cost of living was lower and they thought they would be able to find jobs quickly. The situation was not what she had expected at all. Her sister gave her a walk-in closet for her and her family to live in. Shortly after they settled into the closet they were given, her husband returned from deployment. He wasn’t back very long when they were told they needed to find other arrangements. Desperate to get out of their living situation, they tried to find an apartment to rent. They had their stipends from the time they had served, but without jobs and a steady income, they were unable to find someone willing to rent to them.

They invested part of their money into a mobile home and lived there until they eventually got jobs. Until they were back on their feet, they frequently had to make use of food pantries and soup kitchens to get by. After 3 years they have established stable careers and were recently able to purchase a home of their own.

Every story is different. Families that are homeless are unemployed and employed. They are active military or veterans, businessmen, high school graduates, and people with disabilities. They are seniors. They are children.

Since the first of the year, Christian Neighbors has served 70 homeless individuals or families (169 people) with a variety of services. We have taken some of these precious people through our food pantry, helped to complete and file homeless verification forms for one of our local subsidized housing units, paid back utility bills, or helped with first month rent into a local apartment. Without your help we would not be able to help families like Tanya’s.

During this season of thankfulness…..we are asking you to consider helping. Any financial gift will be investing into a family, allowing them a fresh start. Can you help today?
