Give a Gift to the Local Economy PUT YOUR MONEY TO WORK More money staying local means increased funding for the schools, hospitals, and roads that you and your friends, family and co-workers depend on. Since local business owners hire local workers – about half of all private sector workers are employed in small businesses, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics – money for taxes and wages stays in the community, too. With volatile unemployment statistics linked so closely to the success or failure of small businesses, shopping locally can actually make a positive impact on a national level.
LOCAL SHOPPING
STATS
52% OF REVENUE IS RECIRCULATED LOCALLY BY INDEPENDENT BUSINESSES
A 2012 study in Salt Lake City, Utah showed that more than half of local, independent retailers’ revenue is recirculated in the local economy. In comparison, less than 14 percent of national chain stores’ revenue was recirculated locally, the study showed. By keeping more money close to home, the smaller, locally based firms can play a big role in growing your local economy.
W
hile you’re making your list and checking it twice this holiday season, don’t forget to include your local independent business owners. They’re not asking for much this year, just a little support. And you’d be smart to give it.
A substantially larger percentage of your hardearned money stays in your community when you choose to shop locally for Christmas instead of leaving the area. Recent studies have shown that as much as $75 of every $100 you spend at a locally owned business remains in your area, versus $40 at non-locally owned establishments. This number, in most cases, drops to zero dollars when you buy online.
EVERYBODY WINS Small business owners are also more likely to make social investments in the community by volunteering at their child’s school, donating to charities and hosting fundraiser events. Doing so allows these entrepreneurs to integrate themselves into their communities and
o, ho ho, h oh! uh
make it known that they are receptive and sensitive to the needs of those around them. From little league teams to theater groups, small business owners are quick to offer their sponsorship and money to help support local groups. RIPPLE EFFECT Small business owners have a tendency to buy supplies locally and to use local services for their business needs. When an independent business owner requires accounting services or help with building repairs, they are more likely to spend their money on local accountants or contractors, respectively. When you shop local, your money helps catalyze the circulation of money through your area. It also strengthens your community’s economic foundation and helps enhance it for years to come.

The Musician
M
usicians make beautiful art for all of us to sing along to and enjoy. Finding them the perfect gift can help ensure that they keep doing more of the same. ACCESSORIES Nothing can ruin band practice quicker than broken drum sticks or lost guitar picks. Make sure your aspiring musi-
cians have plenty of both by filling their stocking with their favorite kinds of each. Drumsticks come in a slew of sizes, weights and brands, so do your research before buying. For picks, many companies sell punchers that allow guitarists to turn old credit cards and IDs into functional guitar picks. PROFESSIONAL LESSONS As long as the musician in your life doesn’t misunderstand your gesture, professional music lessons would make for a great gift.

Local music shops offer a casual environment for lessons, with private rooms, top-quality equipment and vastly talented instructors. Stores often offer packages that allow students to pick their own schedules, too, making lessons convenient and low stress. A sharpened skill set is a gift that could last a lifetime and open doors for future opportunities.
auction-type items that have been signed by the artists themselves. If you’re ordering signed memorabilia, though, make sure you are buying from qualified vendors who can produce the proper documentation to prove the items’ credibility.
CONCERT TICKETS Musicians were obviously inspired to play by other great artists, orchestras or bands. Find out who convinced them to pick up their first guitar or horn, and check their websites for upcoming shows. Concert tickets would make for a great gift under the Christmas tree and can foster lifelong memories. Music festivals are gaining popularity and provide music fans the opportunity to check out multiple performers all in one central location. Be on the lookout for any upcoming festivals in your area. Tickets will be a little pricier, but they will provide a weekend full of entertainment. MEMORABILIA Musicians love to be reminded of the places they have played or the concerts they have attended. A little work on your part can help them collect and maintain such memories forever. Many bands and performers offer memorabilia like collectible album covers, self-produced artwork and Tshirts, not to mention

hanksgiving traditionally T marks the beginning of the holiday season.
(StatePoint) Ever since the Gimbel Brothers Department Store in Philadelphia put up the first Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1920, this decade became well known as the golden era of celebration, revelry and joy. Channel the spirit of the 1920s, by adding twists to your classic holiday celebration. From food to music to wine, there are plenty of stress-free ways to bring the lighthearted fun from this bygone era back to your holiday party: Skip flowers. Instead, create drama with eye-catching centerpieces of feather plumes draped in long strands of faux pearls. It’s a simple way to give the room a classic look. • For a real crowd pleaser, fill the room with the smooth sounds of Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. Or use the room as your canvas to evoke the cozy atmosphere of a Norman Rockwell painting. • Bring your celebration to life with a vibrant wine that fits every budget for under $10. According to French law and following a century-old tradition, Beaujolais Nouveau is released annually on the third Thursday of November with celebrations around the world. The first wine of the harvest, Beaujolais Nouveau is versatile and food-friendly – the perfect wine for every festive gathering. Traditionally served slightly chilled, this fruit-forward wine will please red and white wine lovers alike. Whether you’re serving fun appetizers or a classic holiday meal, Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau is a great “go to” wine for a wide variety of dishes. To learn more about the history of the wine, visit www.Duboeuf.com. To add extra elegance to your table, try a splash of 1920s style and serve the wine in crystal glassware on etched, vintage silver trays. • For another fresh spin on the classic taste of the Golden Age, serve up this menu of 1920s-inspired dishes: curried deviled eggs, chorizo-stuffed mushrooms and cider glazed roast turkey. For dessert, bite-sized lemon cakes add a sweet surprise everyone will love. Try out this tempting twist on the classic deviled eggs recipe from the 1920s, a perfect pairing with Beaujolais Nouveau.
Curried Deviled Eggs
Ingredients:
• • • • • • • •
6 eggs 3 tablespoons Greek yogurt 2 tablespoons mayonnaise 1 tablespoon lemon juice 2 teaspoons curry powder 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt Paprika, for garnish
Directions:
Place eggs in a saucepan and cover with enough cold water to cover the eggs by two inches. Bring water to a boil. Turn the heat to low, cover, and cook for 1 minute. Remove from heat, and still covered, let rest for 12 minutes.
Gently crack the egg shells and peel under cool running water, drying on paper towels. Slice eggs in half lengthwise. Reserve whites on a platter, and transfer the yolks to a bowl. Using a fork, mash yolks with all ingredients (except the garnish). Mix well, and evenly spoon mixture into whites. Sprinkle lightly with paprika and serve. Yield: One dozen deviled eggs Without fuss, you can put a fresh twist on tradition this holiday season and bring a bygone era of celebrations into your own home.

hile the latest video game can make a big hit, the most meaningful gifts are often ones that help those in need.
(StatePoint) The holidays are the perfect time to give a charitable gift that could make a profound difference in someone’s life. Donating your time or money to a charity in honor of a loved one is a great way to reach out and help others this holiday season:
Work at a Soup Kitchen Many people have made working at
a soup kitchen a holiday tradition. Something as simple as giving the homeless and hungry a hot meal and a full stomach can make a person’s day. Contact your local soup kitchen to see how you can volunteer. If you don’t have time to help out in person, consider donating non-perishable goods, as many soup kitchens have a food pantry as well.
Rescue Gifts You can also help provide essentials for people in need by giving a “Rescue Gift” in the name of friends and family. Rescue Gifts are charitable gifts that support humanitarian aid work and represent the kinds of emergency relief and services that the International Rescue Committee (IRC) provides to

friends or family as a gift this holiday. In crisis zones like Syria, children hold tight to their beloved teddy bears, finding emotional support in a simple toy. A Rescue Gift like the Teddy Bear and Creativity Kit can provide three children with their own teddy bears, as well as a toy and coloring kit that will help them cope with the psychological distress of war and upheaval. For more information, visit www.Rescue.org/Gifts. "Support from the purchase of Rescue Gifts allows the IRC to address crisis places like Syria, in addition to offering ongoing support and lifesaving care for people around the world affected by catastrophes that have slipped from the headlines," says Nancy Haitch, VP of External Relations at the IRC. While conventional presents are often soon forgotten, a charitable gift can have a lasting effect beyond the holiday season.

STATS
$326 PER 1,000 SQUARE FEET IN TAX IMPACT
According to a 2002 study in Barnstable, Mass., big-box retailers can cost cities more in services than they generate in revenue. But specialty retail shops — the kind that make up the Main Streettype business district in many communities — generate significantly more tax revenue than they cost to service. They produce a net return of $326 per year for every 1,000 square feet, the study showed. The difference comes from how much more road wear and public safety services large businesses require.

her creative endeavor but also gives your recipient a one-of-a-kind gift. Put a little extra thought into the present by tracking down the artist for a signature and personalized message.
DANDY GIFTS FOR THE HANDY What if you could find a gift that will provide years of enjoyment, as well as a feeling of personal pride in a job well done? Well, browse the aisles of your local hardware store and you will be in luck. Unique tool sets and do-it-yourself birdhouse kits will have your handy friend or family member chomping at the bit for springtime. Practical gifts like snow shovels, warm hats, or cozy gloves are also viable options and will make an immediate impact during those snowy winter months.
GIFT CARDS If you’re thinking of opting for the trusty gift card, consider your options. Instead of buying one from an out-of-town establishment or online conglomerate, think outside of the box – and the box store. What better way to support your local business community then by purchasing a gift certificate from your regional golf course, barber, gym or car detail shop? Gift cards are always popular, but giving them a localized spin will make them a guaranteed hit even for the person who already has everything.
hopping locally, you tend to buy just what you need. S This helps cut down on the clutter - and the wrapping once you get home, but also lessens the impact on your wallet.
Keeping local owners in business also fosters a competitive entrepreneurial landscape that will in the long run improve quality while decreasing costs. As local businesses grow, so grows their ability to create more products and improve their service, all at a lower expense to the consumer.
NO GIMMICKS Local shops are focused less on the mega deals and buy-one, get-one promotions that actually can cost you more in the long run. But this doesn’t mean they aren’t in the business of giving deals. Many local shops provide discounts to those who live nearby, helping you save money instead of paying more in tourist taxes that some out-of-town establishments may charge. Some local businesses boast price-matching programs, as well. Ask your local owners if they are willing to match deals you find at other businesses. Their answer may surprise you – and help you save money.
SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY Spearheaded by American Express in 2010, Small Business Saturday has rapidly entrenched itself into the holiday shopping tradition landscape. The nationally recognized movement to celebrate and shop small businesses was created as a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday and has quickly gained progressive traction. Last year, more than 100 million shoppers sup-
ported the initiative, which features discounts, giveaways and promotions from some participating establishments. This year’s event is slated for Saturday, Nov. 30.
NO PRESSURE You aren’t likely to find quota-driven salespeople around every corner at your local independent business. Less dependent on the onetime sale, small business owners are more concerned about providing you with positive shopping experiences because they depend on your repeat business to keep their doors open. And unlike Christmas shopping at crowded out-of-town malls, you are more likely to receive one-on-one attention at local shops. So fill out that customer feedback card and complete that online questionnaire. Your opinions can make a long-term impact on local businesses.
STATS
70% GREATER LOCAL ECONOMIC IMPACT
A 2004 study in Andersonville, Ind. showed that, per square foot of space, local firms had 70 percent greater local economic impact than chain firms. By sourcing more of their supplies and products from local vendors, employing local people and keeping their profit close to home, these businesses contribute more to the local economy.

They possess every movie, flaunt the newest jewelry and have read each book from the New York Times best sellers list. Finding a gift for them is nearly impossible – unless you integrate a little creativity into your gift-giving strategy. Local businesses are hotbeds for the unique and eclectic items that are sure to make a lasting impression on that hard-to-buy-for person in your life. Pottery, paintings, garden supplies and more can be found just a few blocks away at your downtown establishment.

The Therapy of Thanksgiving
“Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise” - Psalm 100:4 The great Norman Vincent Peale told of a wellknown preacher who had suffered a nervous breakdown which sent him into months of hopeless gloom. He eventually overcame it by the practice of thanksgiving. One day a friend encouraged him to take an inventory of his life by naming and thanking the people who had especially blessed him. After giving it some thought he decided to thank one of his elementary school teachers. He was pleased to receive a reply. Now up in years, her handwriting was a little shaky but here is what she wrote: “Dear Willy, I taught school for fifty years and yours is the first letter of thanks I have ever received from a student. And I shall cherish it until the day I die.”
Her letter brought him much joy. He was so inspired that he wrote another letter and another until he had written five hundred letters of thanksgiving! Thereafter, whenever he grew discouraged, he would re-read copies of the letters he had written. While doing so, feelings of happiness would well up in his heart once again. The practice of thanksgiving (to God and others) is not only the right thing to do; it is the healthy thing to do! Who will you thank today? Prayer: Dear Lord, give me a grateful heart. In Jesus’ name. Amen Peace to you and please join us for worship this Sunday in a church where Jesus’ love is lived. Rev. Dan Minor, Pastoral friend and colleague of Rev. Joe Shaler Sponsored In Part by:

This young cutie is B-Dawg. He's the only boy from a litter of 6, appears to be a Boxer Mix, is very well socialized, great with people, including kids and gets along with every dog he's met. Although he's still a puppy and has a lot of growing to do, he's already showing signs of the wonderful family pet he's destined to become. B-Dawg is looking for a loving family to call his own. Call or email anytime.
