Companion Animal Clinic has been a well-established clinic in the Plainwell area since 1986. Now, they have added a second location at 123 S. Fair Street in downtown Otsego, the old Sussex Vision building. The building is dedicated as the "Sara D. Goderre Memorial Small Animal Veterinary Clinic" in honor of their dear
friend and co-worker. The Grand Opening celebration was held October 26th. Greg Hassel, DMV has been helping animals stay healthy for 30 years now and is excited to officially be part of the Otsego business community as well. What makes Companion "Your pet will be unique? treated as if it were ours," Dr. Hassel assures. They also are happy to come to you if you are unable to make into the office. Companion is known for their ceremonial ribbon. friendly & professional service. A great example of their compassion for animals is seen in the story of "Oliver." Oliver was brought into the clinic three years ago, when he was only 3 months old. His owners were no longer able to care for him but the staff fell in love with the little guy. Diagnosed with diabetes, his insulin has had to be adjusted frequently.
"At a veterinary conference we learned just how rare Oliver was," office manager Wendy Hassel explains. "A pup, and especially a mutt pup, is as likely to have diabetes, as it is to win the lotto. Oliver's disposition is phenomenal. He is a bright, happy-go-lucky dog. His sight had diminished substantially due to the diabetes. Nose always to the ground to help guide him, he continued to romp and play and love everybody he met. Just a few weeks ago, a specialist in Williamstown inserted a new lens into each eye and now he can see! Those milky eyes are now a rich dark brown and everything is new again to him. He can now see our faces, our expressions and our hands that stroke his body. What an amazing time we live in, that Oliver's sight can be restored."

The Public Works Department will be picking up leaves between OCTOBER 28, 2013 and NOVEMBER 15, 2013. Leaves will be picked up twice during the three week period. Please plan accordingly. Allegan Street Residents Only - Continue to place leaves in the curb lawn. Please do not place leaves near trees or poles for easier access. The second collection date will be November 11, 2013 for Allegan St. only. Farmer Street Residents Only - The second collection date will be November 11, 2013. Please rake leaves into the street no earlier than the Sunday before pick up. Loose leaves will no longer be picked up after your street has been picked up twice. For safety purposes - Do not place leaves in the street after the second pick up. Leaves may be taken to the city’s transfer station located off Helen Ave. free of charge. Obituaries Avis McCONNEY
AGE 98 – PLAINWELL (formerly of Otsego and Kalamazoo) Avis McConney passed away Sunday, October 27, 2013 at the Stanford Lodge in Plainwell, surrounded by her family and caring staff. Mrs. McConney was born March 2, 1915, in Allegan to Otto and Lotta (Dostie) Hettinger. Avis earned her Bachelor of Arts from Western Michigan University. She was a talented and prolific artist who loved to paint. For over 50 years she was a member of the Art Center of Battle Creek and the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. Avis also enjoyed gardening and reading. She was an avid traveler, and with her husband visited over 72 countries. On December 19, 1936 in Allegan she married George McConney, spending 72 years together before his passing in 2009. Also preceding her in death were her son, Mario; sister, Ardis; and son-in-law, Max. Surviving are her children, Susan Snyder of Otsego, Martha (Paul) Levy of Battle Creek, Dennis (Donnell) McConney of Plainwell; an adopted son Hoa (Xuan) Le of Novi; grandchildren, Scott, Mikki, Beth, Becki, Curt, Angela, James and Kevin; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and there will be no public service. Contributions in memory of Avis may be made to the Art Center of Battle Creek or the American Diabetes Association. Rod died peacefully at home the morning of October 28th, 2013. Rod was born in Plainwell on December 21, 1957 the son of Beverly (Angell) and the late Harold MacDonald Sr. Rod grew up in Plainwell on the farm where he returned with his wife Terri, to live in 2003. He graduated from Plainwell High School in 1975. Rod loved living in the country and was an avid outdoors man. He was an accomplished bowler and a regular at Plainwell Lanes. His bowling awards include, 1-300 ring and 3-299 rings, winner of many tournaments. Rod and Terri Albert were united in marriage on October 18, 1997 after being together for 9 years. Together they enjoyed deer hunting, Nascar, golfing, fishing and boating in many different lakes. They enjoyed vacationing (chasing the sun in the Caribbean). They enjoyed spending time with friends and family. Rod worked at Graphic Packaging for 33 years and retired on June 1, 2011. Rod is survived by his wife Terri (Albert) MacDonald, daughter, Melanie (Keith) Jepsen & their children Emma, Landon and Catherine Jepsen; son Bo (Nikki) MacDonald and their children Bryce and Taylor MacDonald. Rod is also survived by his mother Beverly Blair, sisters Sandy Hicks and Bonnie Doest and brothers Harold (Linda) MacDonald Jr. and Larry (Char) MacDonald. Father and mother-inlaw Gene & Barb Albert; brother-in-law Mike (Jenna) Albert plus many cousins, nieces and nephews. Rod was preceded in death by his father Harold MacDonald Sr. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Wings of Hope Hospice, 530 Linn St. Allegan, MI 49010. Lester S. “Sam” GOUDY AGE 84 – OTSEGO
Lester passed away Sunday, October 27, 2013, in Otsego. Sam was born December 1, 1928 in Kendallville, IN, the son of John and Ethel (Walker) Goudy. For many years he was employed with the City of Otsego Department of Public Works, retiring in 1991 as superintendent. Sam was a member of the Otsego V.F.W. Post #3030 Men’s Auxiliary, Otsego Elks Club #1711, and the Otsego Moose Club #345. In his leisure time he enjoyed golfing and woodworking. On June 16, 1950 in Otsego he married Patricia MacDonald, who passed away in 1998. Also preceding him in death were his parents; a daughter, Susan Gomber; a sister, Arline Tungate; and his step-mother, Josephine Goudy. Surviving are a son, Michael Goudy; a daughter, Vicki (Jim) Martin; son-in-law, Randy Gomber; grandchildren, Doug (Julie) DePauw, Leslie (Todd) Guizio, Nikki Gomber, Rob Doubblestien, Ammie (Troy) Coburn, Rhonda (Chad) Gorton, Jamie (Sam) Moss, Jessie Goudy and Jessica Goudy; great-grandchildren, Brooke, Chelsea, Jacob, Ryan, and Rachael, Kylee, Connor, and Jasmine; a great-great-granddaughter, Naomi; a sister, Janet Stout; his loving companion, Jane Tice; several nieces and nephews. “The Prayer That Stopped Jesus”

There are many of us who can testify to the power of prayer in our lives. There are others who will say “I prayed, but God did not hear my prayer.” We need only to turn to the Gospel by Mark to find the explanation. The story of blind Bartimaeus (Mark l0:46-52) takes up only seven verses of Scripture, yet is rich in meaning. It is a story of our Lord’s compassion, a man’s need, the healing power of God’s love, the power of faith and discipleship all rolled into one story. Jesus and His disciples were ministering in Jericho. Great crowds had gathered. As they were leaving the city, there sat a blind man by the side of the road. He had heard wonderful things about this miracle worker and knew that now was his opportunity for healing. He cried out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” (v.47). It was the prayer that stopped Jesus. Jesus met his need. His sight was restored immediately and he followed Jesus on the way (v.52). When you feel lost in the crowd, remember: • Jesus knows us by name and by need. • Jesus’ love is life-changing. • Jesus is only a prayer away! Prayer: Dear Lord, heal our spiritual blindness that we may follow You on Your way. In Jesus’ name. Amen. Lifelong resident of Otsego, Sharon L. Sage passed away peacefully, with her family at her side on Thursday, October 24, 2013, in Kalamazoo. Sharon was born October 21, 1945, in Plainwell to Robert and Mary (Miles) Sage. For 13 years she was employed with Kal-Equip Manufacturing. She was an avid Tigers fan, never missing a game and able to recite all the stats from years past. She loved reading and had a substantial library. Sharon was very artistic, and enjoyed exhibiting her works at the Allegan Fair. Several years ago she placed Best of Show at the fair with a picture of her dog. She loved animals, enjoyed following horse races, watching dog shows and caring for her parakeets. Her faith was an important part of her life. Surviving are her sister, Janis M. (Bob) Crandall of Marshall; a niece, Lisa (Bjorn) Larson and a nephew, Robert S. Crandall, all of Marshall; a great niece and great nephew, Hannah and Andrew Larson; and a cousin, Frances Longnecker. She was preceded in death by her parents. Cremation has taken place and a private family graveside service will be at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Bob, passed away Friday afternoon, October 25, 2013 at Wings Home in Allegan. He was born on April 23, 1948 in Philadelphia, PA, the son of Alfred and Lillian (Smith) DiFrancesco. On March 22, 2013, Bob was united in marriage to Gail (Hilbert) Esman. He attended Agape Christian Church with Gail. They enjoyed walking together, going to the movies and the beach. He was a music lover and liked swimming. Bob is survived by his wife, Gail DiFrancesco of Otsego; daughter, Alison DiFrancesco of Houston, TX; step-children, Paul (Melanie) Esman of Parchment, MI and Heather (Bryan) Lloyd of Niles, MI; step-grandchildren, Apple, Kaya, Silas, Cullen, Austin, Jillian and Nicholas; father, Alfred DiFrancesco; brother, Alfred DiFrancesco, Jr.; and nieces and nephews. Preceding Bob in death was his mother, Lillian DiFrancesco on January 3, 2013. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 29 at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, Kalamazoo.
