How do you convey the passion of another person? How do you write about the thrill of 25 straight or 100 straight? Greg’s passion for skeet was life long, first joining a Detroit gun club and then GRST in the 1980’s. He loved the competition and meeting new people, many of whom became shooting buddies and confidantes and later a legendary group. His greatest gift to the sport was teaching it. Always an educator and having willing and eager students in his son and grandson made the job a joy for him. The fruits of his labor were rewarded when he took his grandson, Kevin, to Nationals and Kevin shot his first 25 straight. The love of the sport was compelling and doing the many jobs around the clubhouse as well as serving on the board were all part of the passion. Carpe Lutum!

Craig joined Gun River in the mid 80's, where his family has made many great friends both past and present. Stepson Josh has been at the club from a very young age, both setting old handset traps, shooting and mowing. (Lots of mowing.) Grandsons Jordan Arens and Josh Collins have been on the skeet field pulling and learning gun handling safety from a very young age. Son-in-law Rick had been setting trap and reloading for his father Mike from a very young age also and now enjoys shooting with both of his sons Zachery (not pictured) and Josh (Boop Collins).

Dick and family joined Gun River in January of 1971. At that time there was a waiting list for new members. Dick began his skeet shooting in 1951 at the Berrien County Sportsmans Club. He shot in the Marine Corps and later for several years at the Blue Water Sportsmans Club in Port Huron. His family has been very active at Gun River. He taught both his kids (Pat and Rich) skeet shooting and is now in the process of teaching the grandkids. (grandson A.R. and granddaughter Hil).

Dick was president of Gun River for several years and has been on the Board of Directors. He was the Department of Natural Resources skeet and trap champion four years in a row. He is also a past Gun River Skeet and Trap champion. Jeanne served for several years as the club treasurer. Son Rich was the club manager for several years. For the last 35 years Jeanne and Dick have made the member name signs that decorate the club house walls.

The Bowker Family has actually 4 generations of skeet shooters beginning with Loyal Bowker who was an avid and regular skeet shooter both at Gun River Skeet & Trap and White Oaks Gun Club in the early 1950's. Thurm and his wife Nancy are the second generation. Thurm began skeet shooting approximately 1956 at Gun River. Thurm was an active participant and generous contributor to the club. He built the famous wagon wheel fixtures, still in place inside the clubhouse today, and also installed the electrical wiring for the skeet and trap fields in the late 1980's with his son, Ed Bowker. Ed and his wife Holly are the third generation. Ed and Holly began skeet shooting together in 1982 at Gun River as well as White Oaks Gun Club. Edward, the son of Ed and Holly, began his skeet shooting career in 2005 at the age of 12. Jamie and Chelsea Springer are the fourth generation. Chelsea's love of shooting comes by easily with many days spent at Gun River. Chelsea, along with Ed & Edward, introduced Jamie to skeet shooting. There aren't many days that pass that you won't run into someone from the Bowker family at Gun River. They are either shooting or volunteering in some way but in the end it is all about spending time at a great club that has so many memories, old and new.

When asking for directions, people have ended their directions with the statement “You can’t miss it.” Example: “Go l5 miles west and 7 miles south and it’s the second house on the right. You can’t miss it.” Really? How many times has God offered wisdom and direction, but we missed it somehow. The New Testament is full of examples: • The Foolish Maidens who missed the wedding. • The Elder Brother who missed the party. • The One-talent Servant who squandered his opportunity. • The Rich young Ruler who missed the kingdom. • The Lawyer who was close yet far from the kingdom.

Christmas is coming but many will miss the true meaning of Christmas. Perhaps this is because we are too used to it. I am told that people who fly a lot suffer from something called “Frequent-flyer Syndrome” meaning they have flown so much that flying has lost its excitement. If we are not careful, the same thing will happen in our relationship with God. It is possible to be so busy …so preoccupied…so weary…so insensitive…so calloused that we miss the miracle of Christmas… His living presence in our lives. “He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. AGE 61 – OTSEGO, MI Gary passed away Sunday, November 24, 2013 in Kalamazoo. Gary was born March 29, 1952 in Plainwell to Arthur and Betty (Filkins) Nimtz. In 1970 he graduated from Otsego High School. For over 26 years Gary lived in the Boston area, where he was employed as an accountant and bookkeeper. Surviving are his father, Arthur Nimtz of Otsego; a brother and two sisters, Larry Nimtz of Plainwell, Carol Miller of Otsego and Karen (Rick) Clemens of Kalamazoo; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; and his dog, Millie. He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Nimtz, in 2011. Cremation has taken place. Friends may visit with his family on Saturday, November 30, 2013 from 10 to 11 A.M. at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego where a memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Pastor Darrin Youngs ofﬁciating. Burial of ashes will be at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Contributions in memory of Gary may be made to the American Cancer Society.
