To cast our vote is the American thing to do… the right thing to do … the Christian thing to do. One vote can make a difference. • 1645: 1 vote gave control of England to Oliver Cromwell. • 1800: 1 vote made Thomas Jefferson president. • 1845: 1 vote brought Texas into the United States. • 1875: 1 vote ended monarchy in France for a voting democracy. • 1876: 1 vote made Rutherford B. Hayes President. SO DON’T FORGET TO VOTE! Speaking of voting, in the spiritual realm each day is a vote for or against God. Did you hear the story about the man who was asked why he went to church every Sunday? His reply was “I want God and the world to know whose side I am on.” A vote (decision) for God, of course, transcends politics. During the War between the States, President Abraham Lincoln was asked, “Whose side is God on?” His reply: “Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God’s side, for God is always right.” A vote for God is a vote for truth, righteousness, salvation and eternal life. And the one thing God requires is that we worship only Him. This truth is dramatically illustrated in the story of Elijah on Mount Carmel (Old Testament). The battle between God and Baal would determine who the one true God was. Baal was a pagan god of war and fertility among the ancient Canaanites and Phoenicians. When put to the test, the one true God of Israel prevailed. The prophet Elijah called them to decide for or against God. Much later, Jesus said, “No one can serve two masters” (Matthew 6:24). In a world filled with many opinions, the one opinion that truly counts is the one that reflects our allegiance to the one true God.

OBITUARIES

Colin passed away Friday, October 28, 2016 at his home in Otsego. He was born October 12, 1934 in Kalamazoo the son of Thomas and Marie (Cannom) Landells. Colin served his country in the United States Army. He began his career as a firefighter in Kalamazoo in the mid 1950’s, rising to the rank of Assistant Chief. After the fire and police departments merged Colin served as the Captain of the Patrol Division until his retirement in 1986. During his retirement he had worked for the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office and the county courts. In his spare time he loved to go hunting and was well known for his “hunting condo”. He also enjoyed fishing, golfing, his tractors and barn, taking care of his lawn and following the Detroit Tigers. In 1957 he married Dorothy Bultema who survives. Also surviving are his children, Joette (Gary) Krusinga of Kalamazoo, Jill (Glenn) Moore of Lowell and Jane (Randy) Korthase of Boyne City; grandchildren, Erin (Joe) Licari, Shea (Ashley) Miller, Colin (Amy) Moore, Jake Krusinga and Charlie Krusinga; greatgranddaughter, Clara Ruth Moore and his siblings, Marian Murphy and Thomas Landells. He was preceded in death by his parents. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Services were held Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Celebrant, Bill Rose officiated. Contributions in memory of Colin may be made to Reverence Home Health and Hospice. Arthur E. “Art” SHOUP AGE 84 - OTSEGO, MI

Art passed away Wednesday, November 2, 2016 in Plainwell. He was born February 12, 1932 in Kalamazoo the son of Percy and Maude Shoup. He served his country in the US Marine Corps during the Korean War where he was a machine gunner on the front lines for 8 months. Art worked for Harding’s for 34 years then opened Shoup’s Party Store in Otsego which he owned and operated from 1980 until his retirement in 2000. He enjoyed golfing, working and most of all enjoyed spending time with his family. On July 15, 1950 in Portage, he married Barbara Salisbury who survives. Also surviving are 5 children; Sherry (Michael) Leslie of Elkhart, IN, Susan (Burdette “Bob”) Smith of Marcellus, Rick (Marjorie) Shoup of Rockford, Peggy (Steven) Brinkart of Otsego and Michael (Lori) Shoup of Otsego; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and his siblings, Fred, Rosie and Don. He was preceded in death by his parents. Friends may visit with Art’s family Monday, November 7, 2016 starting at 10:00 A.M.at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 A.M. with Celebrant Bill Rose officiating.
