Kenneth A. NUTTER AGE 84 - ALLEGAN, MI

Ken passed away Saturday, December 3, 2016 in Allegan. He was born January 28, 1932 in Kalamazoo the son of Allen and Alice (Lewis) Nutter. Ken served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. For 43 years he had worked at the James River Paper Mill. In his spare time Ken enjoyed fishing, playing horseshoes and board games. He was a dog lover and often volunteered to walk the dogs in his neighborhood. Ken was a member of the First Baptist Church of Otsego and the Otsego American Legion. On June 26, 1954 in Otsego he married Yvonne LaDuke who passed away in March 2016. Surviving are his children, Ken Nutter of Kalamazoo, Steve (Trisha) Nutter of Hopkins and Scott (Deb) Nutter of Allegan; 8 grandchildren, Ashleigh, Caitlin (Josh), Zachary, Lexi, Lindsey, Kaileigh (Chris), Danny (Jamie) and Aaron (Daggris); several great-grandchildren and brother, Earl Nutter. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Michelle Nutter and sister, Helen. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 12:00 P.M., Saturday, December 17, 2016 at the First Baptist Church of Otsego with Pastor Merlyn Jones officiating. In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Ken may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the Otsego American Legion. Ozzie passed away Thursday, December 1, 2016 at Life Care Center in Plainwell. He was born at home in Plainwell on April 1, 1933, the son of Alanzo and Hazel (New) Moran. For 32 years he worked at Mac Sim Bar and retired from Rock Tenn in 1995. Ozzie had also owned and operated 3 bars in Otsego, Hart and Mendon for 15 years. In his spare time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and feeding the birds and squirrels. He was a member of the Otsego Moose Lodge and the club at the Otsego VFW. Surviving are his partner in life, Barbara Roy; son, Allen Sr. (Nancy) Moran of Otsego; step-children, Dave (Sherry) Meyer of Otsego, Cindi (Rod) Tompkins of Otsego, Lauri (Jerry) Kling of Otsego, Ben (Melissa) Meyer of Parchment and Vikki (Dale) Meyer of Plainwell; 5 grandchildren, Allen Jr., Megan, Joanna, Leah and Misti and his brothers, Calvin, Alanzo, John, Leo, David and Bill. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Elton, Carol, Margaret and Phyllis; son, Oscar Jr. and step-son, Harm Meyer Jr. Funeral services were held Monday, December 5, 2016. at at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Celebrant, Bill Rose officiated. Terry W. CHANDLER AGE 72 - PLAINWELL, MI

Terry passed away Sunday, December 4, 2016 at Borgess Medical Center. He was born April 1, 1944 in Kalamazoo the son of Floyd and Dorothy (Miller) Chandler. He served his country in the US Navy as a boiler operator during Vietnam. For around 30 years he had worked at Wilson Air Equipment until his retirement in 2004. Terry belonged to several car clubs in the area and enjoyed showing off his classic cars at Deano’s and the Gilmore Car Museum. On June 23, 1979 in Vicksburg he married Marilyn Clark who passed away in January 2013. Surviving are their children, Marie (Greg) Silva of Turlock, CA, Melissa (Paul) Slachter of Wyoming and Terry Jr. (Jennifer) Chandler of Paw Paw and 13 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, infant brother, Jimmy and sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Jim Adam. Friends may visit with Terry’s family from 2-4 P.M. and 6-8 P.M., Friday, December 9, 2016 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, December 10, 2016. Cremation will follow. Burial of ashes will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery in Lawton at a later time. Floyd C. BLACK AGE 86 - OTSEGO, MI

Floyd passed away Friday, December 2, 2016 at Park Place Assisted Living in Kalamazoo. He was born July 15, 1930 in Hillsdale the son of Clarence and Mary “Mae” (Clark) Black. Floyd served his country in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. After his service Floyd did some farming before going to work as an Industrial Engineer. He retired from Lowell Engineering in the early 1990’s. Floyd had also been a preacher in Allegan for 3 years and had taught Sunday school, helped with the Christian Youth Crusaders, and had been a substitute bus driver. He also enjoyed helping at the senior center, volunteering with hospice and helping with the census. In his spare time he enjoyed playing chess and the harmonica. Floyd was a member of the Friendship Wesleyan Church in Plainwell and the Gideons. He was a patriotic family man who adored his grandchildren. On January 22, 1955 in Angola, IN he married Marilyn McDowell who passed away in 2011. Surviving are his children, Michael (Ruth) Black of Williamston, Margaret “Peggy” (Phil) Perry of Wetumpka, AL, Susan “Becky” (Richard) Pfau of Plainwell, Cynthia “Cindy” (Terry) Trammell of Cordova, TN and Mary (George) Washburn of Otsego; 15 grandchildren and their spouses; 16 greatgrandchildren; siblings and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; great-granddaughter, Emma Grace Hirt and by his siblings, Donna Web, Walter Miller and Earl Black. Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 7, 2016 at the Friendship Wesleyan Church in Plainwell. Pastor Kevin Smith officiated. Burial followed at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego. Deborah DOCKWEILER AGE 66

Deborah Hovinen Dockweiler was born a child of the Lord on January 24, 1950 and returned home on December 2, 2016. She had three greatest joys in life. The first was to be able to teach children to read, for over 30 years at many Portage Schools in the area. The second was to take care of the “Motley Crew” of 6 brothers and sisters that her mother graciously left to her. But her greatest blessing was meeting her best friend in the world on Friday the 13th in 1973. Her husband, John continues to be the love of her life after 42 years of marriage, never to be replaced. Come share our love and celebration of life at Mass on Monday, December 12, 2016 at 11:00 am at St. Thomas More Catholic Church on the campus at Western Michigan University. Friends may meet the family at 10:00 am at the church. Come and celebrate. “Hawaiian” attire will be appreciated. The family invites friends to a luncheon immediately following the service. Phillips Brooks (December l3, l835-January 23, l893) was many things. He was a popular preacher, scholar and much respected Rector of Trinity Church, Boston. A statue of him stands there today.

Perhaps he is best known for writing the lyrics for “O Little Town of Bethlehem (1868).” His church organist, Lewis Redner, added the music. Little did the author know this would be a song for the ages.

There could not be a more fitting song for our nation at this time. Let’s take a closer look by noting it is … 1. A SONG OF HOPE.

The words “Fear not” appear 365 times in the Bible; one for each day. Fear is a strong emotion, but love is much stronger. God is love and “Perfect love casts out fear” (I John 4:l8). The first stanza of the hymn ends with the words “the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.” Jesus was born as the Prince of Peace. He died on a cross to bring us peace with God. Jesus is coming again to bring peace on earth. In the meantime, we are called to be peace-makers. Thus we sing, “O morning stars together, proclaim the holy birth, and praises sing to God the King, and peace to all on earth.” 3. A SONG OF SALVATION.

We live in a noisy world. There are many voices competing for our attention and allegiance. But only one voice is relevant, redemptive and lifechanging. It is the voice of God. We are reminded of this truth in the author’s words “No ear may hear his coming, but in this world of sin, where meek souls will receive him, still the dear Christ enters in.” This leads to a prayer for our nation. “O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel!” Amen.
