State Farm Office in Otsego Gives A “Hand Up” this Holiday Season Jeremy Weitting’s State Farm Office in Otsego joined up with Joshua Thompson and his organization “The Hands Up Project” to donate some 40 Thanksgiving meals to Plainwell and Otsego residents this last Thanksgiving. The Hands Up Project is a non-profit organization started 8 years ago by Joshua Thompson from Portage who says he started the project by helping just a few local families. He believes in a “hand up,” not a “hand out” approach to helping families with children who are experiencing a hardship. According to him a Thanksgiving meal is important because it is meant to bring everyone together as a family. He has worked to double his efforts each year. Members of The Hands Up Project spent 11 hours Tuesday, November 20th loading turkeys and full meals in a Ryder truck to ensure a Happy Thanksgiving for over 256 families in Otsego, Plainwell, Kalamazoo and Lansing. The meals were handed out Wednesday morning, November 21, 2012. Families were selected by nomination and locally by Christian Neighbors. The Hands Up Project worked with Metro PCS and former Michigan State and NFL star T.J. Duckett to donate 128 of those Thanksgiving meals to

Kalamazoo families. T.J. Duckett is a native of the Kalamazoo area and was eager to give back to the city which he says gave so much to him. It’s important to him to give as much time and energy to serving as he gave to his sport. The football star is also the cofounder of the non-profit organization, “New World Flood.” New World Flood believes that citizens are capable of leading the social and economic development of their communities through education, service, and giving, because “a single raindrop is the beginning of a flood.” This is Jeremy’s second year helping the Hands Up Project and this year he has doubled the number of families who received a Thanksgiving meal.

Michael, beloved son of Daniel II and Kathleen Burnham of Plainwell, passed away December 6, 2012 at Aspirus Hospital of genetic liver failure. Michael was a 1990 graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School and had Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees from Aquinas College. Michael loved and was loved by his family and many friends. He is survived by his parents, brother Daniel Burnham III, sister Lisa and Larry Willems, nephew and niece Daniel and Rachel Willems, grandfather Daniel E. Burnham, grandmother Marilyn Laham, special great aunt Martha Laham, aunts and uncles: Toni & Augie Otero, Pamela & Steven Scheick, Dennis & Cindy Burnham, Jeffery & Sue Burnham, Tim & Mary Burnham, Arthur Laham and many cousins. Harriet passed away Friday, December 7, 2012 in Kalamazoo. Harriet was born October 6, 1946 in Kalamazoo to Sheldon and Marie (Bosma) Stensland. Harriet had worked for Kal-Equip for a short time before starting with Perrigo in Allegan. After 27 years of service Harriet retired in 2006. She enjoyed visiting casinos, knitting, scrapbooking, her cats, being outdoors near the pool in the summer months and working with horses in her earlier years. She had been active with the Otsego Moose Lodge #345, Allegan Eagles Aerie #2315 and the Delton V.F.W. Post #422. Harriet’s greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Surviving are her step-father, Al Tice; children, Leo (Kelli) Moyer of Gobles, Ray (Cathie) Moyer of Hopkins, Teresa (Mike) Botma of Pierson and Brian (Jill) Moyer of Sears; her companion of 16 years David Hendges; 14 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren with another due soon; siblings, Annie (Willie) Mansfield of Kendall, Ben (Evelyn) Klaassen of Gobles, Klaas (Sandy) Klaassen of Kalamazoo and Carol (Les) Johnson of Mendon; and by many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and by her sister Helen Stark. Funeral services were held at 11 A.M. on Thursday, December 13, 2012 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Burial followed at Kendal Cemetery. Betty KEITH AGE 84 - PLAINWELL

Betty passed away on December 1, 2012. She was born in Kalamazoo, MI on September 8, 1928. Betty attended the Plainwell schools, then later went to work at the Kalamazoo Stationery Company. On June 17, 1949 she married Charles Keith. She was a devoted wife and mother who was actively involved in her children's activities. She was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church of Plainwell. Later, Betty began volunteering at Life Care Center of Plainwell, continuing to help out there for the 20 years that followed. Betty loved going to Burger King and had a great group of friends who frequently met at Judy's Restaurant. She was always there for her grandchildren in anything and everything they needed. Betty’s family includes her children, Nancy (Don) Colegrove, Richard Keith (life partner Julie McLoud), and John (Janice) Keith; grandchildren, Traci (Russell) Babcock, Michael (Leigh Ann) Colegrove, Jacqueline (Brent) Peters, Faith (William) Davis, and John (Kerry) Keith; greatgrandchildren, Ashley, Jeffrey, Megan, Jennifer, Preston, Quinton, Daniell, James, Charles, and Amanda; sisters-in-law, Elaine Perry Keith, Phyllis Keith and Tyna Keith; and brother-in-law, Leslie (Lois) Keith as well as many other relatives. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles; sister, Dorothy Lancaster; and brothers, George and Richard Rutgers. Steve passed away Sunday, December 2, 2012 in Nassau County, NY, where he was assisting in recovery efforts following Hurricane Sandy. Steve was born September 8, 1960 in Plainwell to Thomas Neal and Paula Louise (Griffith) Stevenson, Sr. He was a 1978 graduate of Otsego High School, where he was on the swim team and in the band, and then earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Davenport University in 1985. Once he received his Paramedic certification he worked for Mall City Ambulance in Kalamazoo, Community EMS in Farmington MI, returning to Plainwell with Plainwell Ambulance Corp. in 1986. Later that year he began working for AMRAmerican Medical Response in Plainwell. He was currently employed as operations supervisor with AMR, transferring to Grand Rapids with AMR when the company moved in 2003. Steve began his career as an Otsego Firefighter in 1988 serving as Captain since 2000. While on the Otsego Fire Department serving as an instructor for the Allegan County Fire Academy, Steve watched many young men and women grow into great firefighters and touched the lives of many citizens. A man of many accomplishments, Steve was instrumental in designing the current Ladder Truck and Fire Engine. He also is credited with beginning the medical response program in Otsego. He was involved with Allegan County Emergency Management as a Local Emergency Planning Specialist and worked ski patrol at Bittersweet Ski Area. As a young man he was involved in theater and musicals, a passion he has passed on to his daughter. In his leisure time he enjoyed fishing, gardening and hunting. He especially enjoyed being a dad and spending time with his daughter. On a ranch north of Las Vegas he married Karen Lynn Carnell-Stevenson, who survives. Also surviving are his daughter, Chelsea; four brothers, Thomas Jr. (Carol) Stevenson of CO, Terry Stevenson of Plainwell, Scott (Linda) Stevenson and Kris (Maggie) Stevenson, both of Otsego; aunts and an uncle; several special nieces and nephews. Funeral Services were held at 3:30 P.M. Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, Otsego, celebrant Timothy Secord officiated. Cremation followed. Donald “Greg” ALEXANDER AGE 63 - MARTIN

Greg passed away on Monday, December 10, 2012, at Rose Arbor Hospice, Kalamazoo. Greg was born September 11, 1949 in Bowling Green, Ohio, the son of Donald and Dolores (Bain) Alexander. Greg was a man of true character, with a love for teaching and learning, a love only exceeded by the passion he held for his family and grandchildren, who he held so dear to his heart. With education a top priority in his life, Greg went on to become a dedicated educator and administrator who impacted thousands of young lives during his many years of teaching. He was a Spanish and history teacher, principal and superintendent of Martin Public Schools from 1970 - 2010. His deeds and actions were an inspiration to those that knew and loved him. Greg was preceded in death by his father, Donald Alexander. Surviving is his wife of 43 years, Madeleine Alexander; 3 children: Audrey (Steve) Pride, Allison (David) Boysen and Andrew Alexander; 6 grandchildren: Kevin, Alex, Mark, Violet, Clara and Anna, his mother, Dolores Alexander; 3 siblings, Dory (Murray) Hulse, Douglas (Cynthia) Alexander and Denise Heyser; and many nieces and nephews.
