After serving 18 years on the Otsego Public Schools Board of Education, Wendy Stafford attended her last board meeting this past week. She was honored by Supt. “LESSONS FROM JOSEPH”

Dan Minor - revdminor@att.net _____________________________________ “This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.” (Matthew 1:18-19, NIV).

If Mary played a prominent role, Joseph may be considered the unsung hero of the Christmas story. Joseph has been called “The Forgotten Man of Christmas” and “The Foster Father of Jesus.” Thankfully, Joseph listened to the angel of the Lord who appeared to him in a dream. He went to sleep in fear but awoke with great courage. He obediently took Mary as his wife and named the baby Jesus (Matthew 1:20-25). Apart from that we know little about Joseph, except he was a faithful husband who loved, taught and mentored Jesus. One writer sums up the life of Joseph with one word: Faithful.

What can we learn from faithful Joseph? I would use three words to describe the faithfulness of Joseph. RIGHTEOUS

One thing is clear. Joseph was a righteous man (Matthew 1:19). To be righteous literally means to live in a right relationship with God and others. Jesus said one of the keys of the kingdom is to hunger and thirst for righteousness (Matthew 5:6). God is the source. “This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe” (Romans 3:22). READY

Another revealing quality about Joseph is that he placed himself in a position to be faithful to God. He lived so close to God that he was ready when God called him. The way we position ourselves to serve God is by spending time in prayer, reading the Bible and obeying God’s Word. Then we will be ready when our time comes. STEADFAST

To be steadfast is to be consistent. The Christian life is a long distance race, not a short distance sprint. Cross country runners practice what is called consecutive days. That means running at least one mile every day. As runner’s in Christ’s race, The Bible says, “Those who endure to the end shall be saved” (Matthew 10:22). The world needs more people like Joseph: Faithful!
