Joy is a deep and abiding sense of the presence of God in one’s life. It is not dependent upon circumstances, but is rather the ability to rise above them. Here is an example from the early church.

The first century church (early Christians) experienced poverty and persecution. Some lost their jobs and many were ostracized by society and even kicked out of their own homes because they followed Christ. Yet they were filled with joy. Tertullian, an early Christian author, reported that even the Romans would exclaim, “See how they love one another.”

Cameron was a larger than life character and he did many things in a bigger way than most 12year old’s. Although he could appear to be shy he had a real interest in meeting and connecting with other people, not just other kids but everyone. Each of our children have talked about how special Cameron made them feel. It’s as if each of the kids lost their best friend. Cameron had a big group of friends. He was physically active and always on the move. He was very daring and always trying new stunts on the trampoline and he loved to play practical jokes on his family and friends. The day before Halloween was just a normal day for Cameron. He had a friend over after school, they jumped on the trampoline trying new stunts and then raided the fridge. He had made plans to go trick or treating with friends after school the next day and had his costume ready to go. That evening before Halloween he had decided to pull a practical joke on his siblings. According to police investigators he had used his phone to look up ways to pull a practical joke using rope. His attempt at the joke went horribly wrong. According to the medical examiner’s report Cameron’s cause of death was deemed “Indeterminate”, meaning there wasn’t enough evidence to call it a suicide. It could not be ruled an accident because it was self-inflicted even though unintentional. After a long and thorough investigation by the police, medical examiner, school and ourselves it was determined that there was no evidence showing that he was struggling with depression or was being bullied. We know that Cameron didn’t do this expecting to die. As you might imagine, losing Cameron has been a terrible experience for us and letting everyone know what happened to him is part of the healing process for us. In communities where a young person has committed suicide sometimes there is a copycat effect where other youths then make a suicide attempt. We are hoping if kids in our community learn that Cameron made a mistake in playing a trick, they will not use his death as a means to justify trying to end their own life. Our family would also like to use this letter to bring awareness to child safety and how serious the actions of children can be. We’d like to also use this letter to thank the people who have reached out to our family during this difficult time. We very much appreciate the continued love and support of our community.

Dave was a big sports fan and as a young man had played football for Sturgis High School. He liked following Notre Dame Football and playing fantasy football. Dave was a very loving husband, brother and brother-in-law. In 1974 he married Joanne O’Neill who survives. Also surviving are his brother, Jim (Sandi) Coy of Port St. Lucie, Florida; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews; his Uncle Calvin and many cousins. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A private graveside service will be held at a later time at Hicks Cemetery in Watson Township. AGE 77 – ALAMO TWP., MI Jack passed away Thursday, December 7, 2017 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. He was born August 22, 1940 in Kalamazoo the son of John and Maxine (Pierce) Kubizna. For 30 years Jack had been a truck driver for ICX until his retirement. As a young man he had been a semi-professional pitcher and competitive bowler. Jack also enjoyed golfing and had been the manager at Hidden Valley Golf Course. In his free time he liked fishing, camping and following the Detroit Lions, Red Wings and Tigers. Most of all Jack loved spending time with his family. On September 28, 1968 he married Charlene Bourdo who survives. Also surviving are his children, David (Stephanie) Kubizna of Kentwood, Lawrence Kubizna of Kalamazoo and Erik Watkins; 11 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; siblings, Perry, Mike, Debbie and Dorothy along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws and brothers, John and Gary. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A celebration of Jack’s life will be held at a later time. AGE 68 – OTSEGO, MI Sally passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. She was born December 23, 1948 in Kalamazoo the daughter of Henry and Alberdena (Vellinga) Rossman. Over the years Sally had worked at Gibson Guitar, Judy’s Restaurant, Weight Watchers and the Red Brick Inn. She had also coowned Bruns Transportation in Allegan. Most recently Sally had worked at Perrigo, Allegan County Community Mental Health and at the VFW Post #3030. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening, mushroom hunting, fishing, and going to the casino. Sally loved cooking large meals for her family and attending her grandchildren’s many activities. She was an active member of the VFW Post #3030 and the Otsego Moose Lodge. Surviving are her children, Dean (Lisa) Prowse of Portage and Jennifer Horrocks of Otsego; grandchildren, Zach, Rachel, Nick and William; grand dog, Burton; brother, Hank (Marilyn) Rossman of Indiana; niece, Cara; nephew, Matt along with several great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and nephew, Eric Rossman. Friends may meet with Sally’s family from 2-4 P.M. and 6-8 P.M., Friday, December 15, 2017 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, with a funeral service at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, December 16, 2017 with Celebrant Bill Rose officiating. Cremation will follow. Burial of ashes will take place at Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park in Kalamazoo at a later time. Ronald Glen Miner of Plainwell passed away December 13, 2017 at Wings Home, Allegan. Ron was born August 1, 1937 in Allegan; the son of Laurel and Thelma (Clawson) Miner. A 1956 graduate of Hopkins High School, Ron married Elaine Groen in 1960 and their children and spouses are: Rory Miner of Delton, Renee (Steven) Beckwith and Gary (Jennifer) Miner, both of Kalamazoo. Ron has ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Elaine preceded him in death in 1991. A loyal employee of Consumers Energy for over thirty one years, Ron was a meter reader and substation operator. As time allowed, Ron volunteered helping family and friends with numerous projects. Ron enjoyed fixing things and he was involved with many church activities and he was also a 4-H leader for several years. In 1994, Ron married Sally (Dewey) Gay who survives along with her children and their spouses: Michael (Serena) Gay of Augusta, Greg Gay and Traver (Samantha) Gay, both of Delton, eight grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Ron is also survived by brothers and sisters in law: Laurel (Betty) Miner of Otsego, John (Karen) Miner of Paw Paw, Max (Phyllis) Miner of Allegan, Bruce (Bonnie) Miner of Delton, David Miner (special friend: Nancy Becman) of Schoolcraft, and Sally’s brothers and sisters: Dave (Jane) Dewey, Susan (John) Edwards, Mary Jo (Dave) Whitaker and Tom (Rose) Dewey, and many other beloved family members and friends. At Ron’s request cremation has taken place. Ron’s family will receive friends Friday, December 23, 2017, 10:00-11:00AM at Haven Church, 5350 N. Sprinkle Road, Kalamazoo, where Ron’s memorial celebration will be conducted at 11:00 AM. Burial will take place at a later date. AGE 93 – PLAINWELL, MI Dale passed away on Friday, November 17th, 2017. Dale was born August 17th, 1924 in Center, Nebraska. He was a veteran of WWII serving his country in the Navy.
