“THE GREATEST GIFT EVER GIVEN”

John 3:16 What would Christmas be without gifts?

Christmas is all about “The Gift” ...God’s Gift... the Christ Child...the Savior of the world (Luke 2:11). Is it not ironic that Christmas is about receiving God’s gift to us, yet we spend much time and money offering gifts to one another? Let’s take a closer look at the greatest Gift ever given. A LOVING GIFT.

“God so loved the world… Love is the greatest gift (I Corinthians 13:13). His love is the gift that keeps on giving. It is the gift that always fits. It cannot be bought or sold, only rejected or received (John 1:11, 12). We can give without loving, but we cannot love without giving. Giving is an expression of God’s love for us and our love for God. A LAVISH GIFT.

“… That He gave His one and only Son …” The gift that counts is the gift that costs. The gift of love is one thing, but the gift of life is beyond human comprehension. It is the highest demonstration of love. “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us… I John 3:16 (Isn’t it interesting that I John 3:l6 correlates perfectly with John 3:l6?). A LASTING GIFT.

“… That whosoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” Jesus is the greatest treasure of all. Jesus said “store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal” (Matthew 6:20). The best things in life are not things. When God gave His Son, He was saying, “This is the best gift that I have for you. I love you so much. All you have to do is accept this gift … embrace this gift … value this gift … and share this gift with others.”

The greatest gift ever given was wrapped in heaven. Prayer: Dear Christ of Christmas. You gave us the gift of Your son. We give in return a life of service in Your name. Amen.

Lisa passed away Sunday, December 13, 2015 at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. She was born August 24, 1966 in Lawton, Oklahoma to Charles and Joan (Hope) Graves. Lisa had been a bartender at Ozzie’s in Otsego and for the last 22 years had been the deli supervisor at the Harding’s Friendly Market in Otsego. In her spare time she enjoyed needlepoint, relaxing with a beer and cigarette along with listening to Kid Rock and Nickelback. Lisa was a wonderful mother, grandmother and wife, over the past 10 years her grandchildren have become her pride and joy. In 1995 in Allegan she married Kenneth Brown who survives. Also surviving are her children, Kenneth Brown of AZ, Charlene (Russell) King of SC and Jeffery Brown of Otsego; 3 grandchildren, David, Collin and Noah; her mother and her siblings, C.J. Graves and Dana Ponder. She was preceded in death by her father. Friends may visit with Lisa’s family Friday, December 18, 2015 starting at noon at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego until the time of the funeral service at 1:00 P.M. with Celebrant Bill Rose officiating. AGE 47 – KALAMAZOO, MI Andy passed away Saturday, December 12, 2015 at his home. He was born December 22, 1967 in Kalamazoo to Edward and Aurora (Olivares) Kawakami. Andy served his country in the US Army in the Middle East. He had lived in Cape Canaveral where he was a chef and enjoyed watching the rockets go off. After returning to the area he had worked at Plainwell Paper, Bell’s Brewery and most recently at Clausing Industrial, Inc. Andy loved taking care of people and was a supporter of the Wounded Warriors Program and had earned his black belt and many trophies in Tae Kwon Do. In his spare time he enjoyed the outdoors, following NASCAR and traveling with his special nephew Ethan, they recently had taken a trip to Disney and had gone on many camping trips. Surviving are his children, Thomas Kawakami and Kayla Kawakami both of Otsego; granddaughter, Alannah; mother, Aurora; siblings, Edward Kawakami of Shelbyville, Tammy (Tim Lane) Maurer of Plainwell, Betty (Michael Brooks) Blackburn of GA, and Penny (Bryan Smith) Kawakami of Otsego; friends, Doug Wood and Patty Blakemore along with many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Edward; sister, Tsuruko Kawakami; nephew, Travis Pickett and by his brother-in-law, Larry Penny. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church of Otsego on Monday, December 21, 2015 at 11am with Pastor Darin Youngs officiating. AGE 90 – PLAINWELL, MI As of December 16, 2015 Tyna is praising the Lord eternally as she walks, runs, sings and can hear. She was born April 9, 1925 in Kalamazoo to Garrett and Anna (Jepkema) Veldt. Tyna loved to bake and was a skilled cake decorator. She enjoyed volunteering as a pregnancy counselor at the Dream Center. She had worked at many area businesses including Gibson Guitar and Honey Creek Christian Homes, where for a time she had worked with her husband. In 1946 she married George Rutgers who passed away in 1975. In 1983 Tyna married Henry Schipper who passed away two weeks later. She then married Louis Keith in 1986 until his passing in 2010. Tyna was a member of the First Baptist Church of Otsego. After hearing the song Blessed Assurance she spoke her last words “He safely takes me home”. Surviving are her children, Virginia Rutgers, George Rutgers, Tom (Debbie) Keith, Denny (Patti) Keith, Kathy (Dan) Hughes, Char (Paul) Hammond and Jeff (Tanya) Keith; grandchildren, Rachael Rutgers, Aaron (Elly) Rutgers, David (Jamie) Rutgers, Hannah (Caleb) Grogan, Wendy Greene, Jonathon (Jennifer) Keith, Joshua (Aimee) Keith, Ben (Stephanie) Keith, Brian (Jillonne) Keith, Lori (Tim) Stricklin, Sean (Shanell) Hughes, Scott Hughes, Christie (Tod) Cole, Cory (Merideth) Hammond, Jeff (Meredith) Keith, Amy (Mark) Morey, Kenny Rose, Seth Rose, Eli Keith and Jasper Keith; many great-grandchildren; sister, Stena Bosma and several nieces and nephews. Eugene WATSON

AGE 90 – PLAINWELL, MI Gene passed away Monday, December 14, 2015 at his home at Lake Doster. He was born March 26, 1925 in Riverdale, MI to Ernest and Ethel (Alward) Acker. Gene was preceded in death by his father as a young boy, his mother remarried and he was then adopted by Ira Watson. Gene proudly served his country in the US Navy. On March 30, 1946 in Hickory Corners he married Dorothy Reardon. Together they owned and operated the Dairy Bar in Edmore, MI until1955. They went on to purchase and operate Dot & Gene’s Trailer Court, which they continued to grow until his retirement in 1971. Following his retirement he sold the business to his sons. Gene had also developed two plats, one as Watson Estates on Riverview Drive in Plainwell and the other as Star Estates on 102nd Avenue also in Plainwell, where his sons built the homes. Gene and Dot were members of the Arizona Chapter of the Family Motor Coach Association and enjoyed attending motor home rallies. In his spare time he liked to go dancing with Dot and golf. Gene was also a member of the First Congregational Church of Otsego, VFW Post #3030 and the Elks Lodge #1711. Gene was a loving husband; his largest accomplishment was raising a family he has always been proud of. Surviving are his wife of 69 years; children, Douglas (Sharon) Watson, Kenneth (Gail) Watson and Dennis (Liz) Watson; 6 grandchildren, Jason (Gina) Watson, Lori (Wayne) Layman, Rick Watson, Scott (Meagan) Watson, Jessy (Chad) Doxtator and Jenny (Jeff) Doychich; 11 great-grandchildren and his sister, Annie Pryor. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Robert, Arlene and Jim.
