“FAITH FOR TODAY, HOPE FOR TOMORROW” By Rev. Dan Minor - revdminor@att.net _____________________________________ “Now in Jerusalem there was a man named Simeon …” Luke 2:25

As we come to the end of the year and the start of a new one, I cannot think of a better transition person than Simeon of old. Simeon is a symbol of faith and a bridge for the future.

We remember him as the older gentleman who was present in the Temple, when the parents of Jesus brought their Holy Child to be consecrated to the Lord. This was in accordance to the Law of Moses and took place when Jesus was only forty days old (Exodus 13:2). The Holy Spirit had promised him he would not see death until he had seen the Christ Child. Thus, he held the child in his hands and proclaimed, “Now, Lord, you can let me, your servant, die in peace as you said. With my own eyes I have seen your salvation, which you prepared for all people …” (Luke 2:29-31N.C.V.). Simeon’s faith was rewarded and he died in peace knowing there was hope for tomorrow. A recipe for hope is revealed in one verse (Luke 2:25). He was “righteous and devout” and “The Holy Spirit was upon him.” Can this be said of us? Take-aways:

1. God always keeps a promise. 2. We can be filled with the Holy Spirit. 3. In Christ, we can have faith for today and hope for tomorrow.

Forrest passed away Thursday, December 1, 2016 at his residence in Allegan. Forrest was born Feb. 9, 1957 in Allegan. He is the son of Forrest and Lois Thayer. He worked as a day laborer. He loved to collect odd things like knives and old coins and also loved to go fishing. He was preceded in death by his father, Forrest L. Thayer Sr., in 1993. He is survived by his two daughters, Diann (Brian) Warner of Allegan and Andria Thayer of Grand Junction; his mother, Lois Thayer of Allegan; his two sisters, Scarlett Thayer (Jack Fletcher) and Star (Jim) Stolte, both of Allegan; two brothers, James Thayer of Germany and George Thayer of Tennessee; and his five grandchildren: Miya (Tom) Morse, Bridgett, Brett Warner, all of Allegan, and Shane and Shawn Burkhead, both of Grand Juction; and his 4 great-grandchildren, several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. The Memorial will be January 7, 2017 at 2:00pm at the Calvary Community Church on 12th Street in Plainwell. Following the memorial is a luncheon. We are taking donations to help the family.

Have you dreamed of singing and performing?

Alice passed away Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at Community North Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. She was born March 16, 1921 in Battle Creek the daughter of Seibert and Jessie (Thompson) Walter. Alice grew up in Coldwater and moved to Kalamazoo to attend Western Michigan University. Alice had a business career and was a homemaker until the age of 40 when she then began teaching until her retirement at age 65. Alice was a member of the Michigan Education Association, helped form the Educational Community Credit Union, wrote history curriculum, specialized in geology and had been the head of the bicentennial in Comstock. She was an avid student all her life. In 1942 she married Earl Weber who passed away in 2005. They spent 63 wonderful years together traveling the world. Surviving are their children, Jane DeMink of Indianapolis, IN and David Weber Shapiro of Berkeley, CA; 7 grandchildren; 16 greatgrandchildren and several great-greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Nancy and siblings, Rachel, Helen and James. A member of the Methodist and Haven Reformed Churches, she was a fine Christian lady, loved and respected by her family, students and friends, and she will be deeply missed. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. Burial of ashes will take place at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego at a later time. Judson BREEDVELD AGE 64 - OTSEGO, MI

Jud passed away Saturday, December 24, 2016 at Vicinia Gardens in Otsego. He was born August 3, 1952 in Kalamazoo the son of Nicholas and Rose Marie (Baker) Breedveld. For many years Jud had worked for Cushman Construction and most recently had operated his own painting business. In his spare time he enjoyed golfing, bowling, horseshoes with friends, trips to the casino, working on his yard, gardening, cooking and spending time in his garage. Jud was an honorary member of the Otsego VFW. On November 19, 1996 he married Louise Winfrey who passed away in 2014. Surviving are his siblings, John (Shirley) Breedveld of Kalamazoo, Joan (Marty) Ruiter of Allegan, JoLynne (Dr. Robert) DeWinter of Grand Junction, Joel (Karen) Breedveld of Kentwood, Nick (Karin) Breedveld of Otsego and Zarlene (Ed) Main of Plainwell; several nieces and nephews including special nephew, Richie Main; Jud’s daughter by love, Jennifer (Michael) Gradwell; grandchildren, Meighan (Ryan) Taylor, Kyle Areaux, Tori Gradwell and Thomas Gradwell; great-granddaughter, Ellerie along with too many friends to mention. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 11:00 A.M., at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Scattering of ashes will take place at a later time. Sharon L. PETRICH AGE 65 - OTSEGO, MI

Sharon passed away Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. She was born February 21, 1951 in Watervliet, MI to John and Marguerite (Noack) Knox. For over 20 years Sharon had worked for AT&T and then at the Meijer in Plainwell until her retirement in February 2016. In her spare time she enjoyed attending events at the Barn Theatre and the Civic, doing Sudoku, puzzles, spending time at the beach, traveling up north, and touring wineries. Sharon was an avid reader, animal lover and liked bowling and golfing on many area leagues, most of all she liked being a sister and aunt. On October 27, 1973 in Coloma she married William Petrich who passed away in 1994. Surviving are her sisters, Delores (Bill) Atkins of Pekin, IL and Roxann (Mike) Tustin of Richland; their children, Mikhale, Stosh and Regan; sister-in-law, Sally (Al) Reschke along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Friends may visit with Sharon’s family starting at 10:00 A.M., Friday, December 23, 2016 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego until the time of the funeral service at 10:30 A.M. with Celebrant, Bill Rose officiating. Burial will take place at North Shore Memory Garden at a later time. Contributions in memory of Sharon may be made to the Barn Theatre School for Advanced Theatre Training at barntheatreschool.com.
