There are almost as many opinions as to how to drive safely on ice or snow as there are automobiles. Most crashes occur when you don't expect the surface of the road to be slippery.

at your destination. Slow down and be alert for other vehicles around you that may lose control, and allow at least 4 seconds between vehicles. Troopers also recommend you allow no less than a car-length in front of you when you are stopped behind another vehicle at a slippery intersection, and then watch your rear-view mirror for cars that may approach you too fast from behind. Often this extra margin of safety will allow you to pull forward in the event that an approaching vehicle begins to slide. If the intersection is slippery you can signal other drivers to the danger by turning on your hazard flashers.

Many people get into trouble by assuming the roads will not be slippery unless the temperature is freezing or below. Ice can form on road surfaces, however, anytime the air temperature drops to 40 degrees or less, especially when it is windy. Bridges and underpasses can be especially hazardous, but these are not the only locations "black ice" can form. Any low or shaded area, area surrounded by landscape, or area that has a source of water running over the pavement can also be quick to form ice. Early morning hours are especially dangerous as the moisture has had an opportunity to sit on the cold pavement and freeze.

If you find yourself beginning to slide on snow or ice, DON'T PANIC. Take your foot off the gas and DO NOT hit the brakes. Steer the front of your vehicle into the skid (the same direction you are sliding). This technique is used in both front- and rear-wheel-drive vehicles. If you must use the brakes, do not allow them to lock up; gently pump the brake pedal, unless your car is equipped with anti-lock brakes. If your car has antilock brakes, use a firm, steady pressure WITHOUT pumping. The grinding noise you hear and the surging you feel in the pedal is normal and indicates the brakes are working properly, allowing you to continue to steer and control the vehicle. Freezing temperatures coupled with snow and ice can take its toll on people who live in climates where cold weather is a fact of winter life. While winter can test people’s patience, it also can be harsh on cars and trucks. Understanding what components of a vehicle can be compromised by dropping temperatures and snowy roads can help drivers take action to safeguard their automotive investments. While the Canadian Automobile Association notes that winter can wreak havoc on just about every part of a vehicle, there are some parts that seem to bear the brunt of Old Man Winter’s abuse. Properly servicing and caring for a car or truck can help. Drivers should take their vehicles for a tuneup and inspection before wintry weather arrives. A mechanic will examine the car battery and check antifreeze levels and make sure that the thermostat, defroster, brakes, and even wiper blades are working effectively. Have the tires inspected for adequate tread, which can make navigating roads safer. If the treads are worn, replace the tires. In addition to visiting their mechanics, drivers can perform some inspections and fixes themselves. • Check that all of the vehicle’s lights are operational so your car can be easily seen during inclement weather. Exchange your existing windshield washer fluid with one that will not freeze in cold conditions. Check the nozzles on the windshield-washer system

routinely and clear out any blockages of ice or debris. While addressing windshield washer fluid, also replace worn out windshield wiper blades with ones that can withstand snow and icy weather. • A new coating of wax can serve as a shield against road salt, snow, sleet, and rain. Try a polymer wax to protect the paint. Whenever possible, rinse off salt and grime so it does not dry on the car and gradually wear away at the paint. Some drivers mistakenly believe that salt stops being a problem once it dries simply because moisture is the active ingredient for a corrosive reaction. But humidity in the air is enough to keep the salt eating away at the car’s paint, and that can contribute to rust. Be sure to rinse off the undercarriage of the vehicle as well. • Have your tires’ alignment checked toward the end of winter or early spring. A season of traveling over pothole-ridden roads or hitting curbs buried under snow drifts can affect the alignment. Get everything back on track. Similarly, inspect tires routinely, as weather changes can affect tire pressure and strength. • Use a soft snow brush or a foam brush to clear snow off of the car. Avoid hard plastic scrapers you might use on your windshield, as they can scratch painted surfaces. • Try to park the vehicle in a garage or under a car port, each of which can protect cars and trucks from the often harsh elements of winter. Vehicles can be affected by the cold weather. Keep them running efficiently to prevent damage this winter.

David FERGUSSON AGE 73 - OTSEGO, MI

David passed away Saturday, November 26, 2016 at Life Care Center in Plainwell. He was born March 9, 1943 in Plainwell the son of Lloyd and Doris (DeBryne) Ferguson. For many years David had worked for Rockwell Manufacturing in Allegan. He enjoyed fixing and building things, spending time in his barn working on motors and tractors, keeping up his lawn and most of all he loved spending time with his family. In 1963 in Allegan he married Claudette Wesseling who survives. Also surviving are his children, Trisha (Mark) Hipp of Florida and Tammy (Kevin) DeRyke of Otsego; grandchildren, Jacob Cannon, Logan Brown, Bailey Brown, Brandon DeRyke and Kyle DeRyke; siblings, Don (Sherri) Ferguson, Jackie (Hubert) Friar, Nancy Ackley and Terry Fields along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Todd Fergusson and grandson, Anthony Cannon. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Memorial services were held at Thursday, December 1, 2016 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Minister Gretchen Kershaw officiated. Burial of ashes will take place at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego at a later time. Contributions in memory of David may be made to Gift of Life. OBITUARIES Ronald M. LUDE AGE 81 - ARIZONA (Formerly of Plainwell)

We mourn the passing of Ronald M. Lude of Oro Valley, Arizona on November 27, 2016, shortly after his 81st birthday. Before moving to Arizona, Ron was a lifelong member of the Vicksburg and Plainwell, Michigan communities. He will be remembered for his love for his late wife, Elsie McClure Lude, his sense of fun, and golfing prowess. Professionally, he was an inspiring high school teacher, guidance counselor, football and basketball coach. An alumnus of Vicksburg High School, Alma College, and Western Michigan University, he excelled as a basketball player, setting many school records. Ron is survived by his brother, Mike Lude of Tucson, Arizona, and by three nieces: Cynthia, Janann, and Jill. Memorial donations may be sent to the Ron M. and Elsie McClure Lude Memorial Scholarship Fund at Alma College Advancement Office, Alma, Michigan 48801.

It has been estimated that over a life-time, the average American spends two years waiting in line. We spend about 43 days on hold with automated customer service. And for those who take a train or bus, they will spend about 27 days of their lives waiting on the platform or at the bus stop. On Election Day it was reported that some lines were more than three hours long. God never seems to be in a hurry:

• The children of Israel waited for nine generations in slavery to Egypt before the exodus. • After the exodus, they spent another 40 long years wandering in the wilderness before reaching the Promised Land. • God gave Moses 40 years of wilderness training.

In ancient times, prophets foretold the coming of Jesus. Isaiah was one of them (See Isaiah 9:2-7). But it was several hundred years before Jesus was born. Again, no hurry there. Thus, Advent is a season of waiting and anticipation.

Waiting upon the Lord requires patience. Some years ago, a noted senator was asked what his biggest challenge was as a United States senator. He said the most frustrating thing was that the constituents back home wanted him to work instant miracles in Washington. That does not always happen in Washington, D. C. or in our journey of faith with God. The thought here is that the most significant accomplishments take much time, hard work and patience.

Consider the example of prayer. I recall a senior saint in my home church who prayed for the conversion of her grandson to Christ. After more than twenty years of praying, He did accept Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord.

Wait time is God’s time. It can be a time of selfdiscipline, learning and growing spiritually. Remember, the promise, “Those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their faith.” Take this promise into this Christmas season and be blessed. Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to wait upon You and be hopeful. Amen.

Robert M. KELSEY AGE 91 - MARTIN, MI

Robert passed away Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at Wings Home in Allegan, Michigan. Mr. Kelsey was born January 20, 1925 in Martin, Michigan, the son of the late Thomas and Catherine (Richardson) Kelsey. He was a Class of 1943 Martin High School graduate and a Veteran of the United States Marines, serving in World War II. He has been a member of the American Legion Post 84 in Otsego, Michigan and the Martin Area Vets for numerous years. He and his late wife, Beverly, spent their lives together working their dairy farm and providing for their family. Together they raised two children and leave behind many wonderful memories of their time on the farm. Robert is survived by his children: Alice Kelsey and Thomas Kelsey; 1 grandson, James Harrington; 2 brothers: John and Kay Kelsey, and Charlie Kelsey; and 2 sisters: Mary Walker and Anne Johnson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly; and 2 sisters: Grace Scarberry and Ruth Smith. Friends may meet with the family on Sunday, December 4, 2016 from 12-2pm at Martin United Methodist Church, where the funeral service will be held at 2pm, Pastor Sean Kidd officiating. Memorial contributions may be made in Robert’s name to Wings Home, 530 Linn Street, Allegan, MI 49010. Interment at East Martin Cemetery, Martin Township.
