“… ‘This is what the Lord says: Put your house in order …” (Isaiah 38:1)

We are familiar with the words, “Cleaning house.” Politicians do it. Governments do it. Service organizations do it. Even churches do it. We have another way of saying it, “Clean up your act.”

God wants us to keep our lives clean. In the above passage good King Hezekiah was sick unto death. God sent a message to him through the prophet Isaiah. The message was: “Put your house in order” (Isaiah 38:1). The good news is that we do not have to wait until the end of our lives to put our lives in order. The Psalmist said the way to approach God is with “clean hands and a pure heart” (Psalm 24:4). This begs the question: Then who can qualify to come before His holy presence? The answer is to align our lives with the only One who is pure.

Jesus walked on this earth as the sinless Son of God. He was tempted but without sin. He lived His life from the inside out. That is to say, His motives were pure, His love was genuine and He always told the truth.

In the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7), He traced murder to anger, adultery to lust and commanded us to love our enemies and to go the second mile. Jesus called the Pharisees out for concentrating on the outer observance of the law while at the same time neglecting the life within (Matthew 15:10, 11). To really see God in Christ, one must see Him in the heart. To see Him is to see God (John 14:9).

Jesus said, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God” (Matthew 5:8). The pure in heart are those who are humble, honest and sincere within. Man looks at the outward appearance. God looks at the heart. Only God can make us pure in heart. With God’s help, we can put our houses in order.

Prayer: “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalm 139:23, 24) Amen.

Marcella passed away Thursday, January 4, 2018 at Life Care Center in Plainwell. She was born March 15, 1929 in South Bend, Indiana the daughter of Marvin and Rosa (Ford) Hickman. Marcella enjoyed golfing, bowling on area leagues, playing cards and traveling all over the world. Most of all she loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Marcella was a member of the First Congregational Church of Otsego. On November 28, 1986 at the First Congregational Church of Otsego she married Victor Suglia who passed away in 2017. Surviving are her children, Shirley (Jack) Hawley, Mark Kahlmorgan, Patricia (Roger) Heckman and Brian (Jacqualyn) Kahlmorgan; many grandchildren, greatgrandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; 2 step-sons, Philip (Laura) Suglia and Joseph (Karen) Suglia; siblings, Ed, Jim (Phyllis), Barbara and Oveta “Veda”) along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Christopher Kahlmorgan, second husband, Victor; daughter-in-law, Judy and siblings, Zella “Rusty”, Clemmie “Clem” and Ronald. Funeral services were held January 8, 2018 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Pastor Stephen Tucker officiated. Cremation followed. Burial of ashes will take place at Mount Ever-Rest Memorial Park North in Kalamazoo at a later date. Helen Elaine KEITH AGE 91 – PLAINWELL, MI (Formerly of Otsego)

Elaine passed away Thursday January 4, 2018 at the Life Care Center of Plainwell. She was born March 4, 1926 in Three Rivers, MI to Harlo and Helen (Price) Perry. She graduated from the Fort Wayne Bible College in 1956 and had attended Western Michigan before graduating from Wheaton in 1960. Following graduation Elaine traveled to Belgium where she studied French before moving on to Ivory Coast where she helped to establish Ivory Coast Academy and stayed to be the first to teach English speaking children at the academy. Elaine served in the mission field for over 33 years before returning to Michigan. On March 23, 1996 she married David Keith and they spent 7 wonderful years together before God called him home. Surviving are her brother, John (Dawn) Perry of CA; niece and nephews, Sherman (Karen) Couk of Vicksburg, Crystal (James IV) Bennett of CA and Michael (Theresa Choi) Perry of CA and step-daughters, Beverly Tabler of IN and Janice (Jim) Car. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Norma (Charles) Couk and Charleen Perry. Funeral services were held January 9, 2018 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Pastor Dan Bowman officiated. Burial took place at Hillside Cemetery, Plainwell. AGE 73 – PLAINWELL, MI Richard left his earthly home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at Life Care Center in Plainwell. He was born March 23, 1944 in Plainwell the son of John and Helen (Richards) Huff. Richard enjoyed attending Sunshine Camp, traveling, riding his bike, making and sending greeting cards and writing letters to his friends. Before becoming a resident he liked visiting the Life Care Center in Plainwell. He loved people and was friendly to everyone he came in contact with. Richard was a fantastic example of unconditional love. He loved his Lord and was a member of the Plainwell Church of Christ. Surviving are his siblings, William Huff of Martin, David Huff of Bradley and Trudy (Ralph) Mead of Plainwell, several nieces and nephews and his many friends in Plainwell. Allen “Al” G. NICKERSON

AGE 82 – PLAINWELL, MI Al passed away January 9, 2018. Al was born July 23, 1935 in Battle Creek; the son of Kenneth and Kathryn (Johnson) Nickerson. A veteran, Al served his country in the United States Coast Guard. A Millwright and Contractor by trade, Al was a member of Millwrights Local 1102. Al enjoyed mushrooming, ice fishing and he loved setting up deer camp with his friends. Al was also a member of Hickory Corners Bible Church. Most of all, Al loved his family. On August 15, 1953, Al married the love of his life; the former June Marie Foote, who survives. Al is also survived by their children: Michael (Karmen) Nickerson, Kim (Gary) Yager, and Kathy (Dave) Kowall, a brother: William (Linda) Nickerson, eight grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Al was preceded in death by his parents, a brother: Charles, sisters: Suzanne and Linda, and a nephew: Mark Pennington. Al’s family will receive friends Sunday, January 14 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at Williams-Gores Funeral Home. John passed away Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at Oliver Woods Retirement Village. John was born February 4, 1933 in Owosso, the son of Loren and Kathryn (Wenske) Kimble. He graduated from St. Augustine High School in Kalamazoo, Michigan. John proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was a life member of the VFW, Knights of Columbus, the Eagles and the Moose Lodge. John enjoyed golfing. John married Joyce Homrich on September 10, 1955 in Kalamazoo. He was a truck driver early on in his career and moved to Owosso in 1976 to work for Lyle Elliott & Sons as a sales manager and he also worked in sales for Pabst Brewing Company. John is survived by his wife Joyce; his nine children Brenda (Dave) Johnson of Dallas, GA, Michael (Jan) Kimble of Plainwell, Michigan, David (Sharon) Kimble, Kevin (Amie) Kimble, James (Pamela) Kimble, Kathryn (Dan) Jehn, Kimberly (Greg) Klapko and John Jr. (Lori) Kimble, all of Owosso and Caroline (Frank) Gray of Long Island, New York; grandchildren Matthew (Regan), Timothy (Christy), Michael (Lindsey), David (Laura), Jami, Emily (Josh), Elizabeth, Rebecca (Judy), Thomas, Jessica (Ashley), Grace, Logan, Donavan, Gregory, Sarah, Adam, Danielle, Katie (Nick), Sara (Jason), Stefan, Andrew (Natalie), Janie, Karly, Branson, Mollie, Hannah, Paige and 10 great-grandchildren; brother Patrick (Nancy) Kimble of New Mexico; sister Mary (Bob) Leupp of Archibald, Ohio; several nieces and nephews and many other loving family and friends. AGE 62 –ALAMO TOWNSHIP, MI Mark passed away Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. He was born February 26, 1955 in Plainwell the son of Robert and Dolores (Carruthers) Pulver. Mark was a 1973 Otsego High School graduate. He had owned and operated Pulver Construction for over 30 years. On May 18, 1979 at Westwood Christian Reformed Church he married Barbara Lingbeek who survives. Also surviving are his children, Justin Pulver of Kalamazoo and Zachary (Katelynd) Pulver and their son Milo of Lowell; mother, Dolores; siblings, Penny (Lark) Baker, Craig (Pam) Pulver, Michele Pulver and Dixon Pulver; sister-in-law, Jayne (Kurt) Nendorf of South Carolina along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and by his nephew, Seth Browning. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Friends may visit with Mark’s family starting at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, January 13, 2018 at the Otsego United Methodist Church until the time of the memorial service at 12:00 P.M., with Pastor Joe Shaler officiating.
