Having fished all night without success, the disciples were very discouraged. Jesus came along and saw two empty fishing boats, a crowd of people and fishermen washing their nets. Jesus turned the situation into a teaching event by turning Simon’s boat into a pulpit (figuratively speaking). He got into the boat and asked to be put out into the water so He could be heard and seen by the people.

The story illustrates our Lord’s command to Simon to “Go deeper…” (Luke 5:4). “When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break” (Luke 5:6). “Then Jesus said, ‘Don’t be afraid: from now on you will catch men” (Luke 5:10). There are many take-aways from this story: • • • • •

The miracle itself. The call to discipleship. A lesson in obedience. Hope in the face of disappointment. Humility in the face of greatness (Luke 5:9).

I would focus on the concept of spiritual growth. Jesus was saying to them, and to us, “Don’t settle for shallow faith. You have been in the shallows long enough. Go deeper and trust God to bring you through your situation.”

On another occasion, Jesus told the parable of the four soils (Mark 4:2-20) representing four kinds of persons. Some people fail to grow spiritually because of the bitter disappointments of life (wayside soil). Others come to Christ with great excitement, but their enthusiasm is short-lived (stony ground). There are those who are too busy for God (thorns). The goal is to bear fruit for God (good ground). Jesus went deep by dying on the cross for our sins. The season of Lent (which begins on February 14 this year) is a fine opportunity to go deep in our faith. Deep faith leads to a deeper relationship with God. And deep faith leads to a more meaningful life.

Prayer: Dear God, I hear your voice saying to me, “Launch out into the deep. Don’t be afraid to plant yourself in good soil!” Amen.

Hazel L. MCPHERSON

Diane passed away Thursday, February 1, 2018 at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. She was born August 13, 1946 in Vicksburg, the daughter of Lloyd and Nellie (Russell) Franks. Diane had owned and operated a beauty shop in Otsego, had worked at Borgess Hospital and recently made and sold necklaces. In her spare time she enjoyed doing crafts, knitting hats for the homeless, making jewelry, and helping with the children’s ministries at her church. Diane loved her family very much. Her husband, children and grandchildren were the joy of her life. In 1965 at the First Congregational Church of Otsego, she married James Barker who survives. Also surviving are her children, Jaimie (Brian) Miller of Gobles and Rob (Stephanie) Barker of Arlington, TX; 5 grandchildren, Britni VanCuran, Asher Barker, Seth Barker, Nicole Cooley and Ben Miller; many siblings; brother-in-law, Bill Barker along with many extended family members. She was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral services held Monday, February 5, 2018 with Pastor Dar VanderWal officiating at Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Burial followed at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Contributions in memory of Diane may be made to the Arthritis Foundation.

Hazel L. McPherson, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, passed away peacefully, Friday, February 2, 2018, with her loving family by her side at the Wings Home in Allegan. Hazel was born October 6, 1917 in Otsego, the daughter of Harry and Hazel (Dymon) Brown. She was a lifelong resident of Otsego and graduated valedictorian from Otsego High School. She was the co-founder of McPherson Plastics. Throughout her life she did everything from running a machine to keeping her meticulous accounting ledgers, working until the age of 97. Hazel was an avid quilter. She also enjoyed watching a variety of birds in her back yard, was a passionate reader, and loved traveling to Mackinac Island with her family. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Otsego. On January 22, 1939 in Bangor she married her junior high sweetheart, Bernard “Bud” McPherson who passed away in 2000. Surviving are her children, Melinda (Bruce) Kling, Bud Jr. (Denny) McPherson, Roger (Linda) McPherson and Tim (Diane) McPherson; 8 grandchildren, Beth Stewart, Gary Kling, Brian McPherson, Amy Pueblo, Lyssa McPherson, Mark McPherson, Sarah Selkirk and Mike McPherson; 22 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her loving husband and her siblings, Betty Cassidy, Harry Brown, Barbara Scott and Katherine Corder. Funeral services held Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, with Pastor Darin Youngs officiating. Burial followed at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Contributions in memory of Hazel may be made to the Wings Home of Allegan or First Congregational Church of Otsego.

Richard Kimmel ARNOLD AGE 83

Richard Kimmel Arnold passed away January 23, 2018. Dick was born in Shelbyville, MI to Ardice and Warren Kimmel on September 20, 1934. He was the adopted son of Dan and Rose Arnold from Plainwell, MI. He married Carol Anne Read. They were divorced in 1974. Dick is survived by his brother Warren (Pat) Kimmel and sister Bonnie (Dan) Albertson, daughters; Christine (Brad) Keeler, Wendy (Scott) Bauer and Rebecca (Dale) Harman. Dick was preceded in death by his daughter Kathryn Arnold and son Richard Read Arnold. Cremation has taken place.

AGE 87 – PLAINWELL, MI Earl Frederick Bourdo passed away February 1, 2018 at Borgess Medical Center. Earl was born December 29, 1930 in Orangeville Township the son of Earl E. and Leila M. (Shoemaker) Bourdo. A veteran, Earl proudly served his country in the United States Marines during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the Delton VFW Post 422. Earl was employed by Plainwell Paper for over 38 years where he worked as a pipefitter and maintenance man. Earl enjoyed going up north and to Florida, mushroom hunting, and taking rides in the country. He could often be found in his garage listening to Detroit Tigers baseball games or keeping track of the sunrise and sunset, which he enjoyed. Most of all, he loved his children and grandchildren. Earl is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, the former, June A. Reynolds; sons: Mark (Kim) Bourdo, Jay (Deanne) Bourdo; daughters; Terri Bourdo and Susan Bourdo; sisters: Carolyn DeVires and Arlene Floria; ten grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Earl was preceded in death by his parents and a sister: Rita Erb. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Feb. 3 at Williams-Gores Funeral Home, Delton. Burial took place at Oak Hill Cemetery.
