How do you measure love? Some people do it by years, some by children produced, and others by shared accomplishments. I measure love in miles. I met Sue in New Hampshire. We were both in the Navy her in communications, I was a Submariner. She left to be stationed in Iceland and Antigua while I continued to punch holes in the ocean. We finally got stationed together in San Diego, married, moved to Guam, then San Francisco, then Connecticut, then New Hampshire, then Connecticut again, then Virginia, and finally Michigan. I measure love in miles. Our love has lasted 34,415 miles! Joe and Sue Dec have been married over 33 years. They have two sons and an adopted daughter. They reside in Plainwell. Sue is a special ed teacher, Joe is a bum!

I was working in a restaurant and Bill came in and ordered coffee. I asked him if he wanted cream and sugar, he said just stick your little finger in it. We were married 62 years when he went to heaven but he still is in my heart. ~ Judy Harrison My Sweetest Memory... The year was 1972 and as I climbed into the white Ford Truck with my bell bottoms blowing in the wind, I noticed a white box sitting on the floor column between us. I didn't mention it as my handsome date drove us through the Plainwell Otsego Streets, where we dined at the very cool Satellite Burgerteria. We arrived back at my house & as I reached for the door handle, my date handed the large white box to me! Inside was a beautiful purple heart (my favorite color!) lace covered box of chocolates! Needless to say..... I married my sweet date and to this day he loves to surprise me.... especially on Valentine’s Day!!!

2 0 1 6 W a t eQUALITY r Q u a l i t y R e p o rREPORT t 2016 WATER The Plainwell Department of Public Works is pleased to provide you with this year's annual Water Quality Report. This report presents information about drinking water in general and Plainwell’s water system in particular. Untreated water contains impurities that are naturally occurring or manmade. As water travels overland or underground, it can pick up substances such as microbes, inorganic and organic chemicals, and radioactive substances. Microbial contaminants such as viruses and bacteria may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations and wildlife. Inorganic contaminants such as salts and metals can be naturally-occurring or result from urban storm water runoff, industrial or domestic wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining or farming. Pesticides and herbicides may come from a variety of sources such as agriculture, urban storm water runoff and residential uses. Organic chemical contaminants including synthetic and volatile organic compounds are by-products of industrial processes and petroleum production and can also come from gas stations, chemical spills, urban storm water runoff and septic systems. Radioactive contaminants can occur naturally or be the result of oil and gas production and mining activities.

Plainwell Water System Overview

The City of Plainwell uses water obtained from wells. The City has two high capacity and one lower capacity well that draw ground water from an aquifer underlying the city. We drive these wells with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) to maintain a more even water pressure and to reduce distribution system damage from water hammer when wells are starting and stopping. The water from these wells is relatively pure as it comes from the ground. As the water is pumped from the ground, fluoride is added to aid in the prevention of tooth decay, and chlorine is added as a disinfectant to destroy pathogenic organisms that can be harmful to your health. The clean water is then pumped into the distribution system. Our public works staff monitors our water supply, pumping and treatment processes, and distribution system, and collects and tests water samples from the system each day. These tests ensure that proper chemical levels are maintained and that our water remains free of unwanted contaminants. The water we produce meets or exceeds all State and Federal requirements and our Water Department had no violations in 2016. Plainwell updated its Wellhead Protection Program in 2012. This work included evaluating current and future well sites, identifying existing and potential sources of contamination, and developing methods to minimize threats to both developed and future well supplies. We strive to protect our groundwater from the potential of contamination. We ask that everyone help us protect our water sources. If you see questionable activity at or near a manhole, a well house, or anywhere that may impact groundwater, please notify Public Safety at 685-9858 or call 911. The susceptibility to contamination for Plainwell’s operating well fields is determined by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ). Susceptibility is rated on a six-tier scale from “Very Low” to “Very High” based on geologic sensitivity, water chemistry, and current or potential contaminant sources. According to the DEQ in 2015, our wells were rated “High” in susceptibility. Interpreting the Data in the Attached Table

All drinking water, including bottled drinking water, may reasonably be expected to contain some impurities. The presence of impurities does not necessarily indicate that the water poses a health risk. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) follows regulations developed by the federal government’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Center for Disease Control (CDC). The EPA and CDC established, and MDEQ enforces, a set of Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) to protect public health. MCLs are set at very stringent levels. To understand the possible health effects described for many regulated elements, a person would have to drink two liters of water every day at the MCL level for a lifetime to have a one-in-a-million chance of having the described health effect. Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. Immune-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, persons with HIV, AIDS or other immune system disorders, the elderly and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice from their health care providers about drinking water. EPA/CDC guidelines for appropriate means to lessen risk of infection by cryptosporidium and other microbiological contaminants are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800-426-4791. If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components in service lines and building plumbing. Plainwell is responsible for providing high quality drinking water, but we cannot control the materials used in your private plumbing. Romance was God’s idea. When did romance begin? Let’s begin at the beginning. Adam and Eve were brought together with God as the officiating minister. Adam was so excited he burst into a bit of poetry “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh…” (Genesis 1:23). Jacob loved Rachel so much he was willing to work for her father (Laban) seven years to gain her hand in marriage (Genesis 29:18). Ruth, a Moabite, married into the family of Boaz, an Israelite. Into their union was born Obed, an ancestor to Jesus of Nazareth (Matthew 1:5). The Song of Solomon (a book in the Old Testament) is the most poetic (and graphic) form of romance in the Bible. It describes the passion Solomon had for his bride. In the Old Testament the husband and wife relationship is a metaphor for God’s relationship with Israel. In the New Testament, the church is the bride of Christ (Ephesians 5:25-27). I Corinthians l3 (New Testament) has been called the greatest treatise on love ever written. It describes the kind of love God has for us (agape) and the kind of love God wants us to have for others. A love which is unconditional, patient, kind, sacrificial, self-giving, protective, never-failing and unending. Jesus told the story about the coming of the bridegroom (Matthew 25:6). One day Christ will come for His church and our love will be made complete (Revelation 22:17,20). In John 3:16 we read, “God so loved the world that God gave His one and only Son, so that all who believe in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). This is a love worth having and a love worth sharing. Now you know why this is the greatest love story in the entire world.

AGE 66 - PLAINWELL, MI

Tommy “Tom” SHERMAN

AGE 69 - PLAINWELL, MI Tom passed away February 7, 2017 at his home. He was born on September 29, 1947 to Lawrence & Sarah (Hahn) Sherman. Tom's family includes his wife of 48 years, Dianna; his daughter Sarah; his brother Larry and his special niece Sue (Bob); great nieces Danyle and Ashley who were like grandchildren, as well as several other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings: Shirley, Nancy, Danny and Randy. After retirement Tom kept a box of milk bones and would give one to all the dogs that went by his home. He also gave ice cream to all of the neighborhood kids. Needless to say, Tom was very popular. He also enjoyed going for drives with family. A memorial gathering will take place on Friday, February 10 from 1:00pm to 3:00pm at Hope Lutheran Church; 290 12th St. in Plainwell.

Harold “Hal” FORD, Jr. AGE 66 - PLAINWELL, MI

Hal passed away on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at the age of 66. He was born on September 23, 1950 in Gobles, MI, the son of Harold and Benja Ford. Hal proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was married to the love of his life, Julia Leskody. Hal honorably worked for the Kalamazoo Police Department and formerly as a Lieutenant for the Petaluma Police Department. Hal was known for his great sense of humor and telling deer stories. He loved life and his family. Hal was incredibly proud of his step-son Frank, and he adored his grandchildren. He was even present for the birth of his new grandson. Hal was a member of St. Margaret’s church in Otsego and the Knights of Columbus. He loved to hunt, camp, fish, watch Nascar and stock car racing; and hunt for morel mushrooms. Left to cherish Hal’s memory are his wife Julia; daughter Megan Ford, step-children Adriena Moisan and Frank Urrego; and grandchildren: Miles, Nyla, and Dexter. A funeral in Hal’s honor will be held at St. Margaret’s Church in Otsego at a later date. Linda M. SCOBEY

Linda passed away peacefully Friday, February 3, 2017 at her home. She was born April 27, 1950 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Stanley and Jean Green. Linda was a graduate of Kalamazoo Central High. She met and married her loving husband, Russell Scobey, in 1970 and the couple moved to Plainwell in 1976. Linda was a strong woman with a zest for life. She survived a major stroke in 1999. Linda enjoyed camping, going to garage sales, spending time with her grandchildren, collecting frog trinkets and traveling. She was preceded in death by her father, Stanley Green, mother, Jean Green and brother David Green. Surviving are her husband, Russell Scobey, daughters; Cindy (Steve) Onderlinde, Christy Wolbers; son, Jeffery Scobey; brothers, Dennis (Patricia) Green, James (Denise) Green; sister, Sherry (Paul) Jolicoeur and many grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Per her wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family memorial will take place at a later time.

Bernice E. HUMMEL AGE 89 - OTSEGO, MI

Bernice passed away Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at Allegan County Medical Care Community. She was born October 11, 1927 in Elvins, MO the daughter of Jesse and Ethel (Smart) Stricklin. Bernice was a 1946 Otsego High School graduate. She enjoyed crocheting, baking and taking care of her family. On October 8, 1946 she married Charles Hummel who preceded her in death. Surviving are her children, Ellen (George) Hoots of Otsego, Charles “Ed” Hummel of Delton and Phyllis Ransbottom of Plainwell, 7 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; step-mother, Evelyn Stricklin; her husband and daughter, Peggy Ann Hummel. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A private family burial of ashes will be held at Mountain Home Cemetery at a later time. Contributions in memory of Bernice may be made to the Allegan County Medical Care Community Activities Fund. passed away of a sudden heart attack. We would like to recognize some of the people who were there for us during this difficult time. The first responders and especially Jon Van Putten who gave me much needed support at the scene. Also, Wayland Ambulance and Bobby Jones, the owner of Shine Auto Wash. Thank you to The Otsego VFW for full military honors at the cemetery. Thank you to all who sent cards with comforting words. We felt so loved. Mary passed away Sunday, February 5, 2017 at Borgess Medical Center. She was born May 21, 1928 in Otsego the daughter of Jake and Bibbianna (Badalamenti) Pirrone. Mary had worked at her parent’s grocery store and became part owner following the death of her mother and was an integral part of the store. She had also worked at Bob’s Hardware, many local retail stores, several area catering business and had retired from Parker Hannifin in 1994. After retiring she worked as a childcare provider until she was 79 and had also worked at Meijer giving out samples for several years. In July 1964 she married Marion Marciniak who passed away in 2008. Surviving are her children, Kathleen Brazee of Wyoming, Kathy (Thomas) Zierer of KY, Kris White of Kalamazoo and Laura Syers of Grand Haven; 8 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; siblings, Benjamin Pirrone, Jake Pirrone, James Pirrone and Josephine Megna along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Christine and brother, Benjamin. Services were held February 9, 2017 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, Rev. Fr. Donald Klingler officiated. Burial followed at St. Margaret Catholic Cemetery, Otsego. Contributions in memory of Mary may be made to the American Cancer Society. Michael J. MATTISON AGE 66 - ALAMO TWP., MI

Mike passed away Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at Rose Arbor Hospice. He was born October 11, 1950 in Kalamazoo the son of Joseph and Edna (Goodhart) Mattison. Mike had worked for 18 years at the Brundage Co. in Kalamazoo and at Kalsec for over 30 years. As a young man he had been active with the Boy Scouts. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed refereeing soccer. Mike loved his family very much especially his granddaughter, Aubrey. On January 17, 1970 at the Alamo Community Congregational Church he married Bonnie Daniel who survives. Also surviving are his son, Brian (Jenn) Mattison of Chelsea; granddaughter, Aubrey Grace; his sisters, Pat (Steve) Kaiser of Milwaukie, OR and Judy (Tony) Sanderson of Plainwell along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Friends may visit with Mike’s family from 58 P.M., Friday, February 10, 2017 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego A funeral service will be held Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at the Alamo Community Congregational Church with Pastor Don Boss officiating. Cremation will follow. According to Mike’s wishes please dress casual, leave your ties and sport coats at home.
