OBITUARIES George RUTGERS, Jr. AGE 61 – PLAINWELL, MI

George Harold Rutgers, Jr. passed away on January 30, 2016. George was born in Kalamazoo, MI on May 4, 1954. He attended Grand Rapids Baptist College and after finishing seminary school, George was a pastor for First Baptist Church in Eaton Rapids, MI beginning 1979 until 1997. George is survived by his sister, Virginia Rutgers, his four children: Rachael Rutgers, Aaron(Elly) Rutgers, David(Jamie) Rutgers, and Hannah(Caleb) Grogan, their mother Robin Bartlett, his 7 grandchildren, former wife Michelle Waters and stepsons, Brandon and Justin Lemke, his extended family of the late Louis Keith, Paul and Cindy Hammond, also, his dear cousins Jon and Jan Keith and Fred and Sue Bosma who were instrumental in his care the last several years. George was preceded in death by his parents George Rutgers and Tyna Keith. George was an avid outdoorsman in his younger years and instilled a love for the outdoors in his sons. His love of reading and knowledge continues to flourish in his children. George loved his dogs, enjoyed keeping a garden and passing the time watching baseball. He was exceptionally proud of his children and grandchildren and their conversations made him happiest. A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church of Eaton Rapids on February 20, 2016 at 11:00am with a luncheon following immediately. Lloyd A. “Tony” WEBER, Jr. AGE 77 – OTSEGO, MI

Born September 6, 1938, Tony (Lloyd Anthony) Weber, Jr. passed away Sunday, February 7, 2016 in Allegan, MI. Born in Martin, MI, he was a graduate of Otsego High School class of 1956, and soon after began his career at what would become Plainwell Paper Mill until he retired after 42 years in 1998. He is survived by his wife, Janet (Burza), whom he married on March 19, 1960, celebrating over 55 years of marriage. Also surviving are sons John (Deirdre) Weber of Downer’s Grove, IL, Bruce (Nancy) Weber of Clarkston, MI, daughters Barbara (Jay) Follis of Allegan, MI, Suzanne of Otsego, MI, brother David (Madeline) Weber of Otsego, MI, sister Gayle Weber of Plainwell, sister-in-law Joan Weber of Plainwell, and grandchildren John, Kasey, and Sydney Weber. He was preceded in death by his parents Lloyd A. and Mabel (Arendsen) Weber, Sr. and brothers John and Stanley. Tony is remembered by his commitment to hard work and providing for his family. At an early age, he and his brother would travel door-to-door in their neighborhood selling the family’s extra vegetables from their garden, as well as having a local paper route. In his teens he held a job at a men’s haberdashery and a local grocery store. Upon graduation, he acquired a position at Plainwell Paper Company (then Michigan Paper) as a trimmer helper apprentice, advancing to a millwright apprentice, and earning his way to Manager of Maintenance until his retirement. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as working with his hands. Tony and Janet enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S., having reached their goal of visiting all 50 states, Alaska being his favorite. A private internment with family will take place at Mountain Home Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to a Memorial Service on Saturday, March 19, 2016 (their anniversary) at 11:00 a.m. at Friendship Wesleyan Church, 1285 102nd Ave., Plainwell, MI. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made “In memory of Tony Weber” to the Otsego Public Schools Foundation, P.O. Box 251, Otsego, MI 49078. AGE 85 – OTSEGO, MI Joyce passed away Monday, February 8, 2016 at Stanford Lodge in Plainwell. She was born March 22, 1930 in Saginaw MI, the daughter of Alva and Velma (Martin) Baker. Joyce grew up on her family farm, graduated from Breckenridge High School and attended Central Michigan University where she met the love of her life, Basil Ash. They were married in Breckenridge on November 12, 1949. Their lives were blessed with the adoptions of Matthew and Melissa. Joyce and Basil moved to Otsego in 1952 where Joyce worked at Spam Brass, Michigan Cottage Cheese and Yoplait. In 1982 they moved to Minnesota where Joyce continued to work for Yoplait, a division of General Mills until her retirement in 1991. They returned to Otsego in 1999. Together they enjoyed summers at the lake in Minnesota, winters in the south and traveling in general. In her spare time Joyce enjoyed baking, cooking, shopping, spending time with friends and attending the United Methodist Church in Otsego where she was an active member and part of the “Apple Dumpling Gang”. Joyce was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and was very proud of each one of them who adoringly called her “Gram”. Her great-grandchildren gave her so much joy as she watched them grow and learn. When things didn’t go right, Joyce said “Oh Boo” and for that her great-grandchildren refer to her as Grandma Boo or GG Boo. Her contagious smile will be missed by all that knew her. She is survived by her children, Matthew (Glenda) Ash of Martin and Melissa (Charles) Coomer of Otsego, MN; five grandchildren, Sheila (Rob) Sarro, Tracey (Jeff) Bryant, Megan, Emily and Nicole Coomer; four great-grandchildren, Robbie, Sammy and Savana Sarro and Liam Bryant; her sister, Barb (Bob) VanDette and by 16 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2006. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at the Otsego United Methodist Church. Pastor Joe Shaler officiated. Burial of ashes will take place at a later time at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego. Contributions in memory of Joyce may be made to the Otsego United Methodist Church. This is the time of year when love is in the air. Did you hear the story about the man who wrote a letter to his girlfriend? Their relationship was taking a serious turn and he wrote the following: My Dearest Darling,

I would climb the highest mountain, cross the widest stream, crawl on my hands and knees in the desert if it meant seeing you. Love, Albert P.S. I’ll be over to see you on Saturday if it doesn’t rain!

We can do better than that. In the language of the New Testament (Greek) there are three meanings of the word love as follows: 1. EROS...from which we get the word erotic 2. PHILIA...which gives us the word philanthropist 3. AGAPE...the Greek word used in the New Testament which describes God’s love Here is a test for love:

Eros love is self-centered; God’s love is God-centered. Eros love is self-seeking; God’s love is self-giving. Eros love is proud; God’s love is humble. Eros is human effort; God’s love is Divine grace. Eros love is temporary; God’s love is eternal.

God is love (I John 4:16) and God is eternal (John 3:16). Therefore love never fails! Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for your great love. Amen.
