1. The snow is cleared all the way to the back of my mailbox! The paper box and hook is clear and easily accessible. (Remember, a CAR often delivers the paper. Just because you can walk to your box and grab the paper, that doesn't mean your mail and paper delivery people can reach it from their vehicle.) 2. A car can drive up to and away from my mailbox. Check out the pictures…a car cannot drive up to a box with 2 feet of cleared space. Test if out yourself! Drive up to your mailbox, then continue down the road.

3. If your paper box and mailbox is by your house, is the sidewalk and walkway cleared of snow AND SAFE? If not, your delivery person may have no other option but to throw it as close as possible.

The loss of a loved one or friend is the most difficult thing one must experience in this life. Whether expected or unexpected, sudden or prolonged, tragic or natural; death is a valley through which all of us must pass. Death is a valley; so are pain, suffering, sorrow and disappointment. The valley David described in this universal Psalm of comfort is an actual place. In Palestine, The Valley of the Shadow of Death leads from Jerusalem to the Dead Sea. In Bible times people traveled through the valley, from the Bethlehem area to the Jericho area. Luke told the story of “a man who went from Jerusalem down to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead” (Luke 10:30). It is a very narrow and dangerous pathway with high mountains on both sides. The winding path is so rough and dangerous that a sheep may fall to its death at any moment. But the sheep is not afraid. Why? The shepherd is with it. When we are facing some valley, it is comforting to know that we are not alone. Jesus Himself experienced the valleys of rejection, bereavement, suffering and death. But He knew the valley was not the end. The good news is that the valley is just that, a passageway, not the final destination. The key word in this verse is the word through. Death is not the end but the beginning of a new and greater existence (Philippians 1:21). We can walk through any valley as long as we remember we never walk alone. Prayer: Lord, give me peace in the valley. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Janet E. TRUTSCH AGE 75 – PLAINWELL, MI

Janet passed away Saturday, February 7, 2015 in Kalamazoo. She was born on July 25, 1939 in Gobles, the daughter of Walter and Reta (Easton) Garrett. Janet had worked at R.B. Huffs Dime Store and had owned and operated a daycare from her home for several years. She was a member of Allegan United Methodist church where she worked in the daycare on Sundays. Janet enjoyed needlework and was skilled at knitting mittens. Surviving are her daughters, Chrissy Trutsch of Kalamazoo, Christianna Trutsch and Alyssa Trutsch, both of Allegan; her siblings, Walter (Kathy) Garrett and Raymond (Nancy) Garrett; several nieces, nephews and her special friend, James. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband Harold; her son Danny Trutsch and her sister, Veva. Funeral Services were held February 11, 2015 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Rev. Robert Lynch officiated. Burial followed at Blackman Cemetery, Allegan. Contributions in memory of Janet may be made to the American Diabetes Association. June passed away Monday, February 09, 2015 in Kalamazoo. She was born in East Grand Rapids on December 20, 1923 to Frank and Mildred (Joy) Campbell. June grew up in Otsego, MI. She retired from James River Corp. June enjoyed traveling, knitting, gardening, reading and doing puzzles. She was a longtime member of the Galesburg Methodist Church. Survivors include her children, Ronald Smith of Galesburg, MI, Gail Sutton of Richland, MI, Stephen (Gailen) of GA and Thomas (Rhonda) Smith of Portage, MI; grandchildren, Russ (Kris) Smith, Scott Smith, Sherry Sanford, Skip (Dani) Smith, Shawna Sutton, Ron (Heather) Sutton, Chris (Anne) Smith, Jeremy (Deb) Smith, Tony (Kate) Smith, Shannon Wellington, Amy (Jason) Gilmer, Tracy (Jeff) Nytray and Mandy (Ryan) Muck; 24 great-grandchildren; brother, Jack (Doreen) Campbell of Charlotte, MI and several nieces and nephews. June was preceded in death by her son, Michael “Mick” Smith; sister, Joy Ryon and by her parents. Cremation has taken place. A private service will be held at Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, MI with family members officiating.

Beverly peacefully passed away February 5, 2015 at Alamo Nursing Home. Beverly was born January 22, 1921 in Kalamazoo to Coral and Ralph Angell. A graduate of cosmetology school, Beverly owned and operated her own beauty salon in Parchment. She also was a league bowler for many years at Plainwell Lanes. Beverly also was an avid card player, enjoyed fishing and loved winning at bingo. Beverly was preceded in death by her first husband Harold MacDonald, Sr in 1961, her second husband Forrest Blair in 1994 and her son Rodney MacDonald in 2013. She is survived by her daughters Sandra Hicks and Bonnie Doest; her sons Larry (Char) MacDonald and Harold (Lynda) MacDonald, Jr.; her daughter-in-law Terri MacDonald, 15 grandchildren, 26 greatgrandchildren and 13 great great grand children. Funeral Services were held, Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at Life Story Funeral Homes, Plainwell 120 S. Woodhams (685-5881) Memorial donations may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice or the American Heart Association. She was a graduate of Plainwell High School and was employed with Village Express in Allegan and later, Christian Neighbors in Plainwell. Michelle loved spending time with her family, going on picnics, fishing and shopping. She had attended the First Baptist Church of Otsego since the age of 5. Surviving are her sons, Daniel (Jaime) Nutter of Florida, Aaron (Daggris) Wink of Colorado; 6 grandchildren, Madison, Dresden, Lincoln, Miles, Allen and Anetta; 2 brothers, Scott (Debra ) Nutter of Allegan; Steve (Trisha) Nutter of Hopkins; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service was held on Monday, February 9, 2015 at the First Baptist Church of Otsego. Pastor Merlyn Jones officiated. AGE 77 – GOBLES, MI

Guy passed away Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at his home in Gobles. He was born March 6, 1937 in Kalamazoo, the son of Guy and Maxine (Crawford) Hess. Guy graduated from State High School where he pitched on the Varsity Baseball team for 3 years, with a record of 21 wins and 4 losses. During the summer in high school, he played American Legion Baseball under Coach Fred Stevens. Their team was the state runnerup. Guy was honored 4 years in the Kalamazoo Gazette All City Pitchers roster and was awarded 3 Gold Baseballs for pitchers in Kalamazoo area schools. After high school he attended Grand Rapids Community College where he was starting pitcher for two years, then pitched for one year at Western Michigan University where he graduated with a Master’s Degree. Guy also played one year with the Washington Senators, a Minnesota Twins organization. In 1962 he was student teacher under George Klaeran at Otsego Public Schools in 7th grade health and physical education and assisted in varsity baseball. He then taught in Colon, MI schools for 2 years. From 1965 to 1988, he taught PE, Life Science and Math, also coaching 7th & 8th grade boys baseball, 7th & 8th grade intramural sports and introduced floor hockey. Guy served Otsego High School athletics in varsity baseball, girls softball, JV baseball, was a faculty manager and ran the clock for over 40 years during football and basketball games for Freshman, JV and Varsity boys and girls. He spent 45 years teaching Driver’s Ed to over 5000 students and never had an accident. His total hours were over 9000 including classroom, driving range and road time. Guy never missed a day teaching due to illness. On July 11, 1987 in Otsego he married Nancy Neal who survives. Also surviving are his children, Cory (Aimee) Hess, Sydne (Akinori) Suzuki, Scott (Sherry) Hess and Christa (Jim) Wesley; 9 grandchildren, Ashley, Kaitlyn, Bailey, Tyler, Sara, Shayna, Sawyer, Sage and Jasmine; 3 great-grandchildren, Brayden, Maysn and McKenzie; his siblings, Gayle Hess and Jim Hess; extended family members and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Glen Hess. Friends may meet with Guy’s family Sunday, February 15, 2015 from 3 P.M. until the time of the Memorial Service at 6 P.M. at the Radiant Church, 8157 East DE Avenue, Richland, MI. Pastor Todd Staal officiating. Contributions in memory of Guy may be made to The Big Give Community Outreach, a program through the Radiant Church to benefit area school children.
