“HAVING A HEART FOR GOD”

As we know, the human heart is the organ that pumps blood throughout the body. In the Bible, the word heart appears more than l000 times and is used in a figurative sense to represent the center of a person, the seat of human desires and emotions.

Examples: A hard heart (Exodus 4:21); a loving heart (Deuteronomy 6:5); an understanding heart (I Kings 3:9); A righteous heart (Psalm 11:2); a broken heart (Psalm 34:18); a clean heart (Psalm 51:10); a wise heart (Psalm 90:12); a trusting heart (Proverbs 3:5);a cheerful heart (Proverbs 17:22); a deceitful heart (Jeremiah 17:9); a seeking heart (Jeremiah 29:13); a pure heart (Matthew 5:8); an evil heart (Mark 7:21); a peaceful heart (John 14:27); a conscientious heart (Romans 2:15); a believing heart (Romans 10:10).

To have a heart for God does not mean one must be perfect. The great Bible teacher, Henrietta Mears, wrote, “David was a man after God’s own heart – not because of boasted perfection, but because of confessed imperfection.” To have a heart for God means nothing less than living a Godly life. Among other things, a person having a heart for God … 1. Is a person whose motives are pure. When Jesus called us to be “pure in heart” (Matthew 5:8) He was talking about the importance of the inner life. In other words be genuine, authentic, sincere and honest from within. Treat others with respect. Do the right things for the right reasons. Do the Christ-like thing. When our motives are pure, our actions will be pure. 2. Is a person humble in spirit.

The irony is that persons who are truly great never think of themselves as being great. A classic example is the late Mother Teresa who said, “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.”

3. Is a person selfless in service.

A servant of Christ serves with no thought of reward or recognition. Rather, true servants serve for the joy of serving. St. Francis of Assisi said, “Remember that when you leave this earth, you can take nothing that you have received – only what you have given.” Similarly, legendary Basketball Coach John Wooden said, “You can’t live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you”

In Acts 13:22, God suggests David was a man after His own heart because “he will do everything I want him to do.” Do you have a heart for God?

Prayer: “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalm 139:23, 24 N.I.V.).

Kevin passed away February 5, 2020 at Rose Arbor in Kalamazoo. He was born September 17, 1960 in Lakeview Michigan, the son of George and Lucille Eckert. Kevin enjoyed snow skiing, swimming and playing the drums when he was young. He also enjoyed reading his bible. Kevin was a graduate of Plainwell High School. He suffered most of his adult life with chronic health issues and handled them with dignity. He was lovingly cared for by his mother, Lucille. He was preceded in death by his father, George Eckert and his brother in law Jim Boettcher. He is survived by his mother, Lucille Eckert; brother Stuart (Deborah) Eckert, sisters Onalee Boettcher, Marilyn Matthies and Jeannine (Thomas) Rizzo and numerous nephews and nieces. There will be a private family interment at Ft Custer.

Carie passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. She was born July 27, 1956 in Allegan, Michigan, the daughter of Lloyd “Bud”and Ruth (McCafferty) Chapman. Carie graduated in 1974 from Otsego High School. She was employed as a bus driver for the Otsego School System for many years and was known for all the time and energy she put into working for the ACRDC Head Start Program. She was a skilled roller skater , taught roller skating and participated in competitive roller skating events. She enjoyed creating beautiful things while knitting, crocheting, flower arranging, and other craft projects. Carie liked her animals and loved her family, especially her grandchildren and shared her many talents with them. She is survived by her husband, Jerrold Rife; children, Lloyd Chapman (Jennifer) of Otsego, Jason Chapman (Allie) of Otsego and Ruth Marie Chapman (Jon Prolo) of Plainwell, grandchildren, Rori, Hannah, Asher, Abigail, Finn, Skylar, Abby, Libby and Alana her mother Ruth Chapman of Otsego , brother Allen Chapman of Otsego, step children Char and Robbie, brother-in-law Dell LaFountain and many nieces and nephews. Marion passed away Thursday February 6, 2020 at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo. She was born March 4, 1933 in Orangeville Twp., the daughter of Leonard and Katheryn (Robar) Riley. Marion enjoyed cooking, baking, playing the bump game, giving her brothers a hard time and spending time with her family. She loved country music, playing cards and bingo and completing puzzles. Marion was a life member of V.F.W. Camp Trotter on Bill’s Lake in Newaygo, MI, V.F.W. National Home in Eaton Rapids, MI and at V.F.W. Auxiliary Post 3030 in Otsego where she served as president of the post from 1974 to 1975. Marion was employed at KalEquip for several years and later with Plainwell High School as night custodial supervisor where she worked for 15 years until she retired in 1993. She was married to Ken Holly on October 21, 1950. They were married for 32 years, Ken passed away on October 17, 1982. On May 19, 1989 she married Billy Swinney who preceded her in death on September 28, 2016. She was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers, George, David, Patrick and Leonard. She is survived by her sisters, Leona McKee, Katheryn Menck and Margaret Delp; her step- son, Jason Swinney and by many nieces and nephews. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial celebration was held Tuesday, February 11, 2020. Celebrant Bill Rose officiated. Burial of ashes followed at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego. Donna Marie JONES-WILSON AGE 85 - OTSEGO, MI

Donna passed away on February 07, 2020 at home under the loving care of her family and Heartland Hospice. The daughter of Orville Anthony & Velda May (Doubblestien) Robar, she was born on December 01, 1934 in Gun Plain Township. On November 1st, 1953 in Otsego, MI, she married Raymond Francis Jones, her high school sweetheart. Together, they enjoyed 42 years of marriage and raised 4 children. Donna was a 1953 graduate of Otsego High School. Donna worked various ofﬁce jobs over the years, but her favorite job was working at the dog track in Florida where she moved after Raymond passed away in 1995. She moved back to Michigan about 2 years ago to be closer to family. Donna enjoyed her family and grandkids most. She loved traveling and had visited quite a lot of places across the country. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ray; daughter, Theresa; and baby sister, Leah. Surviving are her children, Denise Jones (Ray Vanderwood), Steven Jones (Sandy) and Lynda (Todd); grandchildren, Shane, Kristen, Jamie, Tony, Billy, Brad, Brandon, Dana, and Katelyn; and many great grandchildren. Ann Priscilla BREWER AGE 89 - MARTIN, MI

Ann was a longtime resident of Martin. She went to her heavenly home on Friday, February 7 at Park Village Pines in Kalamazoo. Born on November 30, 1930 in Battle Creek, Ann was the daughter of Elon and Inabelle (Rhinard) Randall and was the wife of Paul F. Brewer, who preceded her in death. Ann was a graduate of Athens High School and attended Spring Arbor College. In addition to raising a family, she worked as a secretary and bookkeeper for the Athens school system and later as a Title 1 reading instructor for the Martin Public Schools. After retirement, she volunteered as a student tutor for the East Martin Christian School. As a life-long servant of God, much of Ann’s life revolved around church where she served in many capacities including Sunday school teacher, Jr. Church leader, choir singer and church board member. She enjoyed gospel music, and the old hymns sung at church were always a source of Godly inspiration and meaning. Ann was a talented artist who loved to draw and paint. She enjoyed making ceramic figurines and creating beautiful Christmas cards each year that were prized by all who received them. Reading was another of Ann’s passions. She especially enjoyed Bible-related writings and historic novels. Ann was a woman of integrity whose greatest treasures were found in her Christian faith and in the family she cherished. She was a loving mother to her children, a devoted wife to Paul for 60 years, and she considered being a grandmother one of life’s greatest blessings. Ann always placed the needs of her family, church and community before her own. She loved teaching and helping children and was a positive influence on many young lives over the years. Deeply missed, Ann will be fondly remembered by those who knew and loved her. Ann is survived by three children: Paul Edward (Melody) Brewer of Otsego, Ina Jo Brewer of Battle Creek, and Philip (Gwendolen) Brewer of Martin; four grandchildren: Lindsey (David) Sierminski of Kalamazoo, Adam (Nicole) Brewer of Killen AL, Kristin (Richard) Miller of Crossville TN, Rachel (Mark) Pula of Kalamazoo; four greatgrandchildren and sister Jane (Lawrence) Olmstead of Battle Creek. In addition to her parents and husband, Ann was preceded in death by brothers Harvey, James and William Randall and sister Nancy Swan. Funeral services were held February 12th, 2020. Burial at South Martin Cemetery. Special appreciation to the staff at Park Village Pines, Oakview Terrace who lovingly cared for Ann for 6 years and to the nurses and staff at Hospice of Southwest Michigan who comforted Ann and her family during her final days.
