WE NEED

YOUR HELP! With all this snow, we need to work together to keep everyone safe. Check your sidewalks…are they passable? Are school children, along with the many people needing to bring items to and from your home able to walk on them? Or are they stuck walking on narrowed and dangerous roads. When it's near 0 degrees out, you may be adding hours of outdoor time to those delivering the mail and papers. Don't forget to clear snow from the fire hydrants, meters and mailboxes. We're all tired of shoveling, but it's important that we keep everyone in our community safe this winter! If you don't have any problems, maybe a neighbor's sidewalk, or even your whole block could be added to your snowplowing!

Does this sound familiar? All of the delivery people at the Shoppers Guide try our hardest to deliver your paper to you every week. We appreciate your extra patience in this very snowy, cold, and often treacherous weather. Before you call in with complaints, please go through this checklist…

1. The snow is cleared all the way to the back of my mailbox! The paper box and hook is clear and easily accessible. (Remember, a CAR often delivers the paper. Just because you can walk to your box and grab the paper, that doesn't mean your mail and paper delivery people can reach it from their vehicle. 2. A car can drive up to and away from my mailbox. Check out the pictures…a car cannot drive up to a box with 2 feet of cleared space. Test if out yourself! Drive up to your mailbox, then continue down the road. 3. If your paper box and mail box is by your house, is the sidewalk and walkway cleared of snow AND SAFE? If not, your delivery person may have no other option but to throw it as close as possible.

Ralph E. Nichols went to be with his Lord on January 23, 2014 in Allegan. Ralph was born November 29, 1956 in Otsego, Michigan to Jack and Betty (Trutsch) Nichols. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, football and NASCAR. For over 30 years Ralph worked for Allegan Tubular Products. He is survived by his mother, Betty; brother, John (Heather) Nichols; sisters, Esta Nichols and Rose (Mike) Peters; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends, including special friends, Walt and Shelly. He was preceded in death by a son, Ralph E. Nichols II and his father. The family would like to thank the Wings Home of Allegan and Walt and Shelly for their compassionate care of Ralph. Obituaries Ovie Douglas PINKS

AGE 45 – PLAINWELL passed away Doug January 25, 2014, in Grand Rapids. Doug was born January 27, 1968 in Plainwell, the son of Ovie and Patti (Boydston) Pinks. Doug was an avid hunter, fisherman and mushroom hunter and he enjoyed working on cars and motorcycles. He will be remembered for his love of cooking and barbecuing, especially his shish kebabs. Doug was employed for over twelve years at Consumers Concrete Company. He also hauled steel and logs and was a self employed contractor. Doug is survived by his son: Lucas Pinks, his father: Ovie (Joan Hale) Pinks, and his mother: Patti (Leslie) Hardy, a brother: Rob (Kim) Pinks, a sister: Angie Miller, stepbrothers: Jason and Delbert Hale, Craig and Michael Hardy, stepsisters: Jennie, Jessie and Laura, several nieces, nephews, aunts uncles and a special friend and her children: Heidi Hodges. Doug’s family will receive friends Saturday, February 1, 2014, 10:00 – 11:00 AM at the Williams-Gores Funeral Home 133 E. Orchard, Delton where his memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 AM. AGE 83 – OTSEGO Kenneth passed away Monday, January 27, 2014 at his home. Mr. Moore was born January 18, 1931 in Canton, OH the son of George and Verna (Poland) Moore. Kenneth served his country during the Korean Conflict where he earned two Purple Hearts. He worked for over 40 years at Menasha Corp. In his leisure time he enjoyed trap and skeet shooting at the Fennville Rod and Gun Club; playing bingo at the Paw Paw Lions Club and playing golf. On December 27, 1951 in Otsego he married, Vanya Wood who preceded him in death in 2008. Surviving are his children, Kenneth Moore, Diane Belden and Alan Moore; grandchildren, Wendy, Corey, Rebecca, Cody and Kenny; 8 great-grandchildren; sister, Betty of FL and a dear friend Jean Tagg. Also preceding him in death were his parents and 2 sisters. Cremation has taken place. Contributions in memory of Kenneth may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice. AGE 83 – WESLACO, TEXAS formerly from Otsego

Harold passed January 20, 2014 at his winter home in Weslaco, Texas. He was born July 14, 1930 in Eaton Rapids, Michigan and completed High School there in 1948. Business College in Lansing was the next step to his education. The Korean Conflict found him in the U.S. Navy for 4 years. During that time he married Shirley, who survives him. After the Navy they came back to Kalamazoo and he received his Bachelor Degree in Elementary Education from Western Michigan University. He taught 6th grade math and science for 30 years in the Otsego Public Schools. Hal was passionate about Golf and all sports in his lifetime. This passion fueled the development of the first Girls Lions Track Invitational while serving as the President of the Otsego Lions. While Exalted Ruler of the Otsego Elks, Hal and his wife, Shirley, started the kiddies Christmas Party that is still held today. Hal also was instrumental in starting the Otsego Athletic Boosters. Surviving is his beloved wife of 60 years, Shirley. His children: Kathy (Jerry) Miller, Mark (Tricia) Hamman, Eric (Jennifer) Hamman, Pete (Lynn) Hamman. Grandchildren: Carl (Rebecca) Miller, Amanda (Matt) Wolf, Caroline Hamman, Ben Hamman, Claire Hamman, Nathan Hamman, Jacob Hamman, and Joshua Hamman. Great Grand Children: Briana, Isaac, and Madison Wolf. Sister Sharon (Jerry) Pierce and Sister and Brother-in-law Ann and Richard Yates. A memorial will be held for Hal February 15th at 1:00pm at the Otsego Elks. The Otsego Elks is located at 113 ½ S. Farmer Street, Otsego, Michigan 49078. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Otsego Elks major projects or the charity of your choice.

Deloris “Dee” MEACHAM AGE 66 – PULLMAN

Deloris passed away Friday, January 24, 2014, in South Haven. Mrs. Meacham was born May 26, 1947 in Alger, OH to Oscar and Laura (Patten) Dyer. For many years she had been employed as a nurse’s aide, which she thoroughly enjoyed. In her leisure time her favorite activities were music, cooking, decorating her home, reading and coffee. On August 11, 1962, in Salyersville, KY she married Leonard Meacham, who died in 2004. Also preceding her in death were an infant son, Scottie in 1965; and siblings, Ernie, Elmer, Denver, Fae Hollister, Marie Dyer, Delmer and Palmer. Surviving are her daughter, Deb (Gail) Maynard of Pullman; two grandchildren, Paula and Jackie; her siblings, Tillie Guerin, Chalmer (Kathleen) Dyer, Mae Beazley and Joyce (Roy) Ellison; many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 28th at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego with Pastor Mary Hoots officiating. Burial followed at Hillside Cemetery, Plainwell.
