In August 2016, 29-year-old Faizan Patel, from India, went on a honeymoon to Greece and Italy…by himself! That wasn’t the original plan. Sana, his bride, and the organizer of the voyage, discovered right before the trip she had lost her passport. Because a refund was impossible, the bride persuaded the groom to go on their wedding trip alone. Even more pointless than a solo honeymoon is leading a life other than the one for which we were created and intended by God. We learn, in Colossians 3:5-9, that believers in Christ are being renewed in the image of our Creator. Although sin has tarnished God’s image within us, it is restored by Christ, who forgives our sins. Since God returns us to our original intent, there is no value or benefit found in the behaviors of our former “earthly nature”. In Col. 3:8, we are instructed that “anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language…” have no purpose in our lives. Instead, our hearts have a different trajectory, one in which “compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness…patience…”, forbearance and forgiveness are the new ways of doing things (Col 3:12). Faizan began the trek alone, but he longed to have Sana beside him. Then entered the power of social media! As the world saw tweeted pictures of Faizan holding his bride’s photo in front of the leaning tower of Pisa, India’s minister of external affairs decided to fast-track a passport and visa to Sana. The couple reunited, and finished the honeymoon together, restoring the trip to its original purpose. No matter where we are on life’s journey, Christ yearns to join us with forgiveness, acceptance, and God’s love. With Him, we have purpose! We receive new life in Christ. He will restore us to God’s original intent for us, filling us with genuine purpose.

“THE BIG PICTURE”

John Glenn, the first American to orbit Earth, said “If there is one thing I’ve learned in my years on this planet, it’s the happiest and most fulfilled people I’ve known are those who devoted themselves to something bigger and more profound than merely their own self-interest.” In other words, look at the big picture. John C. Maxwell, one of today’s top leadership thinkers said, “Leadership is not about titles, positions or flowcharts. It is about one life influencing another.” Big picture. These stories remind me of another story in the Bible. Jesus was heading toward Jerusalem and the cross when his disciples began to argue among themselves about which of them should be greatest in the Kingdom. Pettiness has been defined as being “small in nature, trifling, mean or ungenerous.” As they were walking along, Jesus stopped and asked them what they were talking about. His penetrating question stopped them in their tracks. The Scripture says, “But they were silent.” Another version reads, “The silence was deafening…” (Eugene H. Peterson) It has been said they were reduced to shameful silence. It was a very awkward moment for them. While Jesus was thinking deep thoughts and moving toward the cross, His disciples were caught up in their petty thoughts of selfimportance. Especially toward the end of His life on earth, Jesus kept His eyes on the big picture (The cross and beyond). In the words of S. Ralph Harlow: “We marvel at the purpose that held thee to thy course While ever on the hilltop before thee loomed the cross…” Jesus wants us to be like Him. He wants us to see beyond ourselves to His larger purpose for our lives. Let us remember to see the big picture as we continue on our Lenten journey. Prayer: Dear Lord, forgive our petty ways and give us wisdom to follow your path. Amen.

AGE 86 - DECATUR, MI Formerly of Lawton, Gobles and Otsego

Ragie passed away Sunday, March 5, 2017 at the Allegan County Medical Care Community. Mrs. Buck was born January 13, 1926 in Springfield, MO to George Washington and Ruth Alberta (Payne) Honicutt, but after her father’s sudden death, the family moved to Michigan. Starting around the age 9, she was raised at the House of David in Benton Harbor, MI. Less than a month shy of her 17th birthday, she married Francis Lewis Buck on December 24, 1942. Reggie (as she was often called) followed her husband around the United States while he served in the Army, working various civilian jobs to serve the cause. After the war, they settled in Coloma to raise a family. She became a foster mother and devoted her life to being a parent and grandparent. As son Ron’s children grew up and granddaughter, Shannon moved out of state, Ragie and Louie moved to Otsego to be close to and help raise grandchildren, Alissa and James. She was the ultimate mother figure. She modeled appropriate behavior and intellect far beyond her limited formal education. Her love was not limited to biologically related family. All were always welcome in her home. She loved gardening, canning and cooking. She was especially known for her pies and cinnamon rolls. She learned to like sports, rather than become a Sunday afternoon widow. She developed her own favorite teams in football, basketball and baseball. It took Derek Jeter to get her to cheer for her husband’s lifelong favorite baseball team, the Yankees. She thought Jeter to be such a great role model and questioned the ethics of players that her grandson James would cheer for. She enjoyed their good-natured banter on ethics. She was preceded in death by her husband Frank in 2005. Surviving are her three sons, Ronald (Shirley) Buck of Watervliet, Michael (Deborah) Buck of Otsego and Carl (Sharon) Buck of Richland; grandchildren, Melinda Buck, Robert Buck, James (Laurel) Buck, Alissa (Ryan) Renner, Shannon (Lt. Col. Clifton) Harris, Zachary Ullisch, Kaydie (Ashley) McCormick, Kelsey McCormick and great-grandchildren, Elora, Alexander, Gabriel and Abraham Harris, Jace Ullisch, Cohen Renner and Sullivan and Shuyler Buck. A private family burial will take place at Trowbridge Methodist Cemetery in Trowbridge Township. Friends may visit with Ragie’s family from 3-5 P.M., Sunday, March 12, 2017 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. In lieu of flowers, the family would encourage donations to Wings of Hope Hospice or the Allegan Medical Care Community.

Bill passed away Monday, March 6, 2017 at White Oaks Assisted Living in Lawton. He was born December 1, 1930 in Trowbridge Township the son of Charles and Beatrice (Belden) Fuller. Bill was an Otsego High School graduate and was an Eagle Scout. He proudly served his country in the US Air Force during the Korean War. For 39 years Bill had worked as a service tech for Consumers Power Company until his retirement in 1993. In his spare time he enjoyed doing remolding projects at his properties and for others, stopping at the coffee shop while on the Consumers clock, fishing, camping, traveling to Florida, up north and Toledo to visit his Air Force buddy, giving his grandchildren tractor rides and taking day trips to South Haven and Saugatuck. On December 22, 1950 he married Martha Thompson who passed away in 2016. Surviving are his children, Pamela Martin of Otsego, Cynthia (Lowie) Pachner of Decatur, Diane (Bill) Holland of Lawton and Amy Fuller of Otsego; son-in-law, Mike Stasevich; 19 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; his siblings, Robert (Barb) Fuller and Betty Bonnell along with many nieces, nephews and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, daughter, Deb Fuller and brother-in-law, Max Bonnell. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Friends may visit with Bill’s family from 5-8 P.M., Friday, March 10, 2017 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego where a memorial service will be held at 1:00 P.M., Saturday, March 11, 2017 with Celebrant Bill Rose officiating. Ed passed away Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at his home in Otsego. He was born May 30, 1925 in Otsego the son of Ray and June (Clink) Burdick. Ed had worked at Perrigo as an electrical technician until his retirement in 1995. In his spare time Ed enjoyed tinkering with electronics. He was a member of the Friendship Wesleyan Church of Plainwell. Surviving are his great nephew, Wayne Hawk and great niece, Debra Taylor. He was preceded in death by his parents and many extended family members. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M., Monday, March 13, 2017 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego with Pastor Kevin Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego. Virginia went to heaven early Monday morning March 6, 2017 at Vincinia Gardens. Her health declined following a fall in November. She was born April 23, 1927 in Woodsfield, Ohio to Ralph and Louise Campbell and came to Michigan with her family as a young child. She was an expert seamstress and her quilts were given in charity to many organizations. She, along with husband Al, was one of the founding members of the Kalamazoo Valley Antique Engine and Machinery Club and Rumely Products Collectors and had been an active member of the Otsego Area Historical Society. Ginny was a lifelong member of St. Margaret’s Church and especially enjoyed going to the Cooper Church. She led an active and happy life with her many friends until the time of her fall. Her final words were “I want to go home to rest.” She was preceded in death by her husband Elwin (Al) Bronson in 2008 and her siblings, George, Ralph, Fred, James and Susan. Left to mourn are her children, Michael (Judy) Bronson, Mary (Randy) Lober and Mark (Sherri) Bronson all of Otsego; grandchildren, Paul Bronson, Joseph (Kecia) Bronson and Sarah (Chris) Lake; great-grandchildren, Hollieh Bronson, Tyler, Travis and Alie Bronson and Lauren and Parker Lake; her brother, Francis “Pete” Campbell of Arizona; brother –in-law, Frank Rupert; sister-in-law, Mary Campbell along with many beloved nieces, nephews and godchildren. According to her wishes cremation has taken place and no services will be held. A private family burial will be held at St. Margaret Cemetery in the spring.Contributions in memory of Ginny may be made to the Otsego Area Historical Society.

Fern passed away Sunday, March 5, 2017 at Alamo Nursing Home. She was born April 10, 1914 in Kendallville, Indiana, the daughter of Perry and Didamie (Potter) Irwin. Fern had a lifelong ambition of starting a facility to serve as a nursing home, with particular emphasis on care for the aged. It was in November 1955 on a section of their family farm that Alamo Nursing Home was built and still serves the elderly today. State regulations required licensed personnel to be on staff so Fern went back to school and became an LPN and served as owner and Administrator for many years until her retirement. She then went on to open and operate Fern’s Ceramics in Plainwell. She enjoyed porcelain making and had made many porcelain dolls for her family, even making the clothing by hand. She loved to fish and enjoyed crocheting and quilting and had also made several quilts for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Fern was very devoted to her family and would give the shirt off her own back if you needed it. She wanted to make life better for others. On November 26, 1927 she married Ray Enos who passed away in 1984. Surviving are her son, Walter Enos, daughter-in-law, Betty Enos along with several grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and great-great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; children, Perry Enos, Catherine Preston and Mary Lou Holdeman; grandchildren, Sandy Hughes and Barbara Croy and siblings, Otha, Cecil, Herbert, Ronald, Goldie, Norma, Arthur, Bertha, Martha, Alice, Allen, Katherine, Richard, Raymond and Paul. Friends may visit with Fern’s family starting at 11:00 A.M., Friday, March 10, 2017 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, until the time of the Funeral Service at 1:00 P.M. with Pastor Greg Yarworth officiating. AGE 94 - PLAINWELL, MI formerly of Portage Vera passed away Saturday, March 4, 2017 at the Life Care Center in Plainwell. She was born February 2, 1923 in Alamo Township the youngest of 7 children born to John and Bertha (Ketchum) Black. For many years she had sold Stanley products and had worked at Kalamazoo College. In her spare time she enjoyed playing games especially bingo, going camping, fishing, traveling up north to the family cabin, taking motorcycle rides, snowmobiling and boating. Vera liked helping out with the Brownies and 4-H when her daughters were younger and had bowled on many area leagues. She was a wonderful baker and an accomplished seamstress. On January 15, 1943 she married Mark Kershaw who passed away in 2008. Surviving are her daughters, June Kershaw of Walker, Linda (John) Blowers of Athens, Sandra Drobny of Otsego, Judy Bunker of Ionia and Susan (Al) Kuras of Portage; 17 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren and 13 great-greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings, Mildred Miller, Florence Lappin, Lucille Hewitt, Martin Black, Elmer Black and Garland Black. A Funeral service was held Wednesday, March 9, 2017 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego with Celebrant Bill Rose officiating. Burial followed at Hillside Cemetery in Plainwell. Robert L. THOMAS AGE 48 - PLAINWELL, MI

Rob passed away Friday, March 3, 2017 at Borgess Pipp Hospital in Plainwell. He was born February 19, 1969 in Detroit to Daniel and Nancy Thomas. Rob enjoyed fishing, computers and enjoyed following sports especially the Red Wings and Lions. On June 14, 2003 in Allegan he married Deborah Baker who survives.
