There is a difference between human greatness and God’s greatness. As for human greatness, we talk about such things as great presidents, great athletes, great actors/actresses, great humanitarians and even great preachers. A person who worked closely with five of our presidents concluded they all had one thing in common: an enormous ego. A well-known boxer said, “I am the greatest.” A renowned preacher and teacher of preachers was once asked, “Who is the greatest preacher of all time?” He replied “There is no such thing as a great preacher, only a great gospel!” The difference between human greatness and God’s greatness is that one is self-serving, the other is selfless. The mark of true greatness is humility. Let us consider Jesus who “humbled himself and became obedient to death – even death on a cross” (Philippians 2:8). “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name” (Philippians 2:9). True greatness is not about status, wealth or power. True greatness is living in a personal relationship with the greatest person who ever lived - Jesus Christ our Lord. One of my favorite praise songs is entitled “How Great Is Our God” (written by Chris Tomlin/Ed Cash/ Jesse Reeves) which reads in part: “… How great is our God, sing with me How great is our God, and all will see How great, how great is our God”

Let us sing the song of God’s greatness throughout our Lenten journey. Amen.

9:45am Pictures with the Easter

Remember the 193-vehicle accident on I-94 near Battle Creek, in January, 2015? Trucks and cars collided in whiteout conditions on both sides of the slippery freeway. Vehicle fires ignited 40,000 lbs of fireworks in the trailer of a semi-truck, setting off explosions that lasted for days. One first responder said, “It was like a war zone…we were running to take cover. Fireworks were shooting across everywhere. We left and jumped down in a ditch.” Holding on to anger is like living with 40,000 lbs of emotional fireworks. Experiencing stress and minor offenses can ignite an emotional detonation that sabotages relationships, ruins our sense of peace, and impairs our fellowship with God. Because of this, the apostle Paul writes in Ephesians 4:31, “Get rid of all bitterness.” Bitterness, or resentment, is what we feel when we neglect to forgive others the offenses or injustices we’ve experienced. The result is that we exchange our joy for chronic unhappiness. Paul further instructs us to rid ourselves of rage, brawling, slander, and malice. Each of these can be linked back to unresolved anger. Quarreling, abuse, and hatred are often activated by habitual resentment. Practicing forgiveness breaks this cycle of bitterness. In Eph. 4:32, Paul teaches about “forgiving others, just as in Christ, God forgave you.” In vs. 26, we are told, “Do not let the sun go down on your anger.” A commitment to timely, healthy conflict resolution, as well as offering our offenders the gift of forgiveness is the best means of offloading bitterness. This can be done whether our offenders are remorseful or not. Forgiveness is not easy, but it is essential for personal peace, as well as healthy relationships with God and others. We can find motivation to forgive by remembering that God has forgiven us!

OBITUARIES April M. WINSBORROW AGE 28 - NEW ORLEANS, LA (Formerly of Plainwell)

April Marie Winsborrow came into this world on April 19, 1988. She was a fun loving, adventurous, free spirit. She loved everyone and had a smile that could light up any room. She loved kids, animals, art and all kinds of music. She was involved in Girl Scouts and with the Venture Crew. She was a cheerleader and played soccer at the Terrytown Playground. She played Varsity Soccer at Belle Chasse High School and JV Soccer at Plainwell High School. April graduated with her GED in 2012 and completed a year of college. She loved her friends and her family and would do anything for them if she could. The Lord called her home on February 22, 2017. She will be forever loved and missed. Surviving are her mother, Laura Winsborrow (Logan); father, Jerre Winsborrow (Kay), brothers, Cody and Tyler; 2 step-sisters and 3 stepbrothers; grandparents, Luella and Mark Wagner and Winston and Christine Winsborrow; many aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Joe Covault and grandmother, Elaine Winsborrow. Cremation has taken place. Friends may greet her family on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at the Winkel Funeral Home in Otsego from 12 noon until the time of the memorial service at 1:30pm. Burial of ashes will follow at Mt. Home Cemetery in Otsego. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SPCA of Southwest Michigan or to the Elizabeth Upjohn Community Healing Center. Doug passed away unexpectedly March 10, 2017 at home. Doug was born December 18, 1974 in Kalamazoo to Carl and Sandy Bailey. He graduated from Delton Kellogg in 1993. Doug was an avid hunter of deer, turkeys, coyotes, even got a bear. He loved to mushroom hunt. Doug is survived by his mother, sister, Karla (Mike) Hogue, nephew Tylor (Cali) Bailey, nieces Michelle, Brooke Hogue, Emma Bailey, many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Doug was preceded in death by his father, Carl, a brother and grandparents. Per Doug's wishes, cremation has taken place. He will be missed by all.
