Local Woman Finds Sweet Success Valentine’s Day 2008, Lindsey Pompileo was working down in the basement of the Epic Bistro in Kalamazoo, when she suddenly collapsed and found herself later laying in a hospital bed. Six months before she had given birth to her second son and had felt sick ever since. She paid visits to doctors but they would only diagnose her with a virus. After two days of testing at Bronson Methodist Hospital, the doctors had found the problem that had been ailing Lindsey. Lindsey had been diagnosed with Stage 4 Lymphoma in her blood and her bones; the sickness became so bad that tumors were even bulging from her skin. Lindsey underwent a year of chemotherapy and by the spring of 2009 was back at work. Lindsey praised the help of others for their support and willingness to help the Pompileo family out. Her husband Chris had quit his then job just around the time Lindsey had been diagnosed. Lindsey’s brother Andre and the Millennium Group worked together to raise $13,000 for the family to help get them through the hard times. Another friend who came to their aid was Brooke Bourdo. Brooke moved in with the Pompileo’s, helping with the kids and keeping the house in order. When asked who Lindsey looked to for encouragement, she cited Brooke as her inspiration. Brooke worked the front counter at The Cupcake Zoo but was recently diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. Lindsey draws inspiration from her, and how she deals with pain everyday but doesn’t complain about it. “I admire her ability to tough it out,” said Pompileo. It was during her illness that Lindsey began baking at her house, and that is where The Cupcake Zoo started. The Cupcake Zoo came close to being named Baby Cakes, but opted for The Cupcake Zoo. It ties in with the city of Kalamazoo - a name that fits perfectly as they prepare their 2nd location in downtown Kalamazoo. The target date to open is April 1st.
Asking Lindsey what made you want to become a business owner, she cited her husband Chris Pompileo. Chris opened his own business and has seen much success in recent years. Lindsey liked the freedom and going out on her own. Though it was difficult at first, she faced such obstacles such as financial burdens and knowing when to shut down the work aspect of life and spend time with family. Lindsey walked me through a typical day which starts off with her alarm buzzing at 4:30am. After arriving at her Otsego location, she sits down in front of the computer screen and answers e-mails and handles her office duties. She prepares menus and bake lists for her staff. The kitchen comes to life from 5:30am until 6:00pm. Lindsey takes time off when able to see her kids off to school around 7:30am. Then she heads back into the bakery. Lindsey spends they day working on dessert design and overall management, and calls it a day around 4:30 to welcome her kids home from school. Lindsey’s biggest influence is her husband Chris, who has the opposite schedule as she does. While Lindsey goes in early, and comes home “early,” her husband leaves for work a little later, and arrives home in the evening hours. Lindsey went on to say that Chris runs a tight ship, and runs an honest business. Both of them believe in paying

their small group of employees what they are worth, not under paying a bunch of employees. Pompileo said, “I don’t always succeed, but I try.” Chris is always there to support her with his calming presence. Pompileo went on to say, “I always look to Chris to stay centered.” She mimics what he does to keep a balance at The Cupcake Zoo. Lindsey has experienced many great achievements in her life. She states her most satisfying moment as a business owner was signing her lease in Kalamazoo. When asked what advice she would offer to aspiring business owners she replied, “Always follow your dream. If you have a passion know it can be done.” Lindsey also says to ask for help, and go at it with caution. Pompileo said, “Nothing worth doing is ever easy.” The Cupcake Zoo opened in April 2012 solely as a backing facility. After several months, they opened their doors for walk in business for the Creative Arts Festival and sold out in hours. From there on The Cupcake Zoo has been one of the most popular businesses, not only Otsego, but also the entire area. Lindsey Pompileo’s hard work and dedication should inspire many. Lindsey battled through the toughest and darkest times of life and beat every obstacle that was stacked against her. I asked Lindsey if she ever thought it would get this big. She simply replied, “No. No I did not, I still can’t believe it.”

At age 35, Caterina Fake, who had worked as the art director for Salon.com, founded the popular photosharing website Flickr in 2002. The site was actually an offshoot of a game Fake was developing with Stewart Butterfield, her husband at the time. While the game quickly went bust, the photo-sharing technology they designed was a hit. In 2005, Fake and Butterfield sold Flickr to Yahoo for a reported $35 million in cash and stock options.
Maxine Clark came up with the idea for Build-A-Bear Workshop after shopping with a 10-year-old who questioned why she couldn't just make her own stuffed toy when she couldn't find one she liked. Clark turned the idea into a business when she opened the first Build-ABear Workshop in St. Louis in 1997.

Former preschool teacher Lane Nemeth founded Discovery Toys in 1978 after becoming frustrated that she wasn't able to purchase the same educational toys that day care centers had access to. Using a $5,000 loan from her grandmother, Nemeth purchased her first batch of toys to start the direct sales company. Over 22 years, Nemeth grew Discovery Toys into a company with $100 million a year in sales and 40,000 sales representatives. She sold the toy company to Avon in 1997.

I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John l4:27). I was asked to visit a person in the hospital who was said to have been an unbeliever. As I was listening to the patient, the Lord gave me words that just blurted out, “Would you like to ask Jesus Christ into your life right now?” He said “yes” and then we prayed and I could see the look of peace on his face. 3. We have the Power of His presence. As many have experienced this winter, we cannot live well without electricity. I do not understand what electricity is, but I experience its power. Similarly, I do not know everything there is to know about God, but I believe in the power of His presence. Belief is more than intellectual assent. It means to trust Him and to commit our lives to doing His will. When facing a life challenge; or even when things are going well; remember you are never alone. Prayer: Lord, we thank you for your living and loving presence in our lives. Amen. Peace to you and please join us for worship this Sunday in a church where Jesus’ love is lived.

Stanley Willcutt passed away Monday, February 24, 2014 at Wings Home in Allegan, MI. Stanley was born June 26, 1938 to Carl and Doris (Boyer) Willcutt in Hastings, MI. Stanley was a truck driver for a livestock transportation company for many years. He also worked in a factory for several years in Cincinnati before returning to the area. He was a life member of a hunting and fishing club and a member of the First Baptist Church of Plainwell. He enjoyed playing his guitar, model trains, reading and he loved camping. Stanley is survived by his son Christopher; a stepdaughter, Angie; 13 grandchildren; 3 siblings; Charles (Mary Lou) Willcutt of Delton, JoAn Marie Waite of Kalamazoo and Irene Ziegler of Martin; several nieces and nephew and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Sue Ann; his son Daniel Shon and by his granddaughter. Cremation has taken place according to his wishes. A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Plainwell on March 8, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Jack Nichols officiating. Contributions in memory of Stanley may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice or to the First Baptist Church of Plainwell. Mr. Thar passed away Saturday, February 22, 2014 in Battle Creek. He was born September 1, 1936 in Benton Harbor to John and Enola Thar. Ed served his country in the Air Force and enjoyed fishing and hunting. On September 23, 1995 he married Sandra Lawson who survives. Also surviving are his children, Robin (Sherman) Brown of IN, Michael Thar of FL, Natalie Thar of MI and a stepson, Ron (Cindy) Brock Jr. of MI; a sister Oralee; many grandchildren, greatgrandchildren and great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son Jim. Following his wishes cremation has taken place and burial of ashes will take place at Ft. Custer National Cemetery, Augusta. Obituaries William “Bill” BUSHEE AGE 91 – PLAINWELL, MI
Bill passed away February 25, 2014 at Borgess Medical Center. Bill was born on January 12, 1923 to George & Alma (Rickert) Bushee. Bill’s family includes his wife of 68 years, Donna; his children: Roger (Margaret) Bushee, Deb (Tom) Somers, Shelley Bushee, Rhonda (Don) Kiewiet; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters: Alma and Elna. Bill served his country proudly in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945. He loved spending time with his family, fishing, playing cards and collecting antiques. He was a hard worker and very social. William H. HENDERSON AGE 88 – EL PASO, TX
William, formerly of Otsego, passed away Wednesday, February 19, 2014 in El Paso, Texas. Mr. Henderson was born July 29, 1925 to Harvey and Lillian (Krueger) Henderson in Otsego. He was a graduate of Otsego High School and for over 30 years was a lineman for Consumers Power until his retirement in 1980. He served his country in the Navy during WWII. William was a life member of the V.F.W. and Elks and enjoyed making jewelry in his spare time. On December 24, 1962 in Plainwell he married Sandra E. Roebuck who died in 1993. Also preceding him in death were his parents; his brother, Harvey “Bud” Henderson in 2004; and his grandson, Matthew Henderson in 1979. Surviving is his son, William (Donna) Henderson of Kalamazoo; his grandchildren, Michael (Heather) Henderson of Mecosta, Michelle (Matt) Garlock of Kalamazoo and Jason (Jessica) Henderson of Florida; nine greatgrandchildren; his sister-in-law, Rolene Henderson; and several nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and no services are scheduled at this time. Contributions in memory of William may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
