A Boy Scout In Our Community named Sam Jacobs has begun work on his Eagle Scout project. Sam's project, Collect and Build for Christian Neighbors is a two part project. The collecting portion of the project involves challenging local churches to collect food donations for our local Food Pantry and Helping Agency, Christian Neighbors. The challenge and collection begins Sunday, March 1 and will continue through the 5 Sundays in March. “THE MESSAGE OF THE CROSS”

“For the message of the cross is foolishness for those who are perishing, but to those who are being saved it is the power of God” I Corinthians l: l8

I ran across a story that disturbed me. A church, not known to me, wanted to improve attendance at their main worship service. So they hired a well-known advertising agency to come, study their situation and make their recommendations. The ad agency did their research and then suggested to the church that they should get rid of all the crosses in the church because the crosses might send a negative message to prospective young worshippers! Christianity without a cross is not Christianity. Theologian Reinhold Niebuhr was way ahead of his time when he described what future generations would look for in religion. “This is a view that insists on a God without wrath bringing men and women without sin into a kingdom without judgment through a Christ without a cross” Jewish law said, “He that is hanged is accursed of God” (Deuteronomy 21:23). To the Jews, the idea of the cross was a stumbling block. To the Greeks (also known as Gentiles), the idea of a man dying on a cross was considered foolishness (I Corinthians l: 23). To the contrary, Apostle Paul (a well-known leader in the early church) preached “Christ crucified...” Without the cross, there is no resurrection. Without the resurrection, there is no salvation – no hope for eternity. The cross is more than an adorning piece of church furniture. To all who believe, it is the power of God for salvation! Prayer: Dear Lord, may the message of the cross lead me to a deeper relationship with the Lord of life. Amen. A Special Honor This Sunday: Rev. Charles “Charlie” ESHBAUGH AGE 52 – FLINT, MI

Charlie passed away March 15th, 2015. He was born December 27th, 1962, son of Charles and Ruth Eshbaugh. Charlie is survived by his Stepmother, Ruth Eshbaugh; two brothers, Floyd (Angelina) Eshbaugh of Martin, Donald (Penny) Eshbaugh of Plainwell, Sisters; Joy (Roy) Livingston of Plainwell, Erica Wright. Step Sisters; Scharon (Mark) Rose of Kalamazoo, Janet Earle of Allegan. Charlie was proceeded in death by his father, Charles Eshbaugh. He was loved by all his Nieces and Nephews. Charlie always knew how to light up a room with his smile. A Celebration of Life will take place Saturday, March 28, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at St. Margaret Catholic Church Social Hall; 766 Farmer St. Otsego, MI 49078. Burial will take place immediately after at Oakwood Cemetery in Allegan.

AGE 75 – ZEPHYRHILLS, FL (formerly of Allegan Co.)

Ross was born on December 13, 1939 and passed away March 10, 2015 in Zephyrhills, Florida. He is survived by his wife, Beverly; daughter, Melinda (Joe) Wolthuis; two sisters: Mary and Cathy Latchaw; a brother, David Haines, a grandchild, Austin; three stepchildren; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place per his wishes and a graveside service will be held at a later date in Allegan, MI. Donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation.

Dallas “Butch” MILLER AGE 74 – OTSEGO, MI

Butch passed away Friday, March 13, 2015 in Allegan. Butch was born January 24, 1941 in Monterey Township to Norman and Elma (Taylor) Miller. Butch enjoyed painting and was very accomplished at it. He also enjoyed fishing, riding his bike and gambling – possibly because he always came out ahead. He especially enjoyed visiting with friends and family. Surviving are his siblings, Rick (Suzie DeLoach) Miller of Plainwell and Dixie (Robert) Howrigon of Plainwell; many nieces and nephews. Butch was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Monie, Terrance Miller and Shirley Syers. Funeral Services were held Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Pastor Greg Carlson officiated. Burial followed at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego.
