My son is like a River flowing across this land. If you go to the beginning of the Missouri River you would find a small stream. One so small you could just step over the River. When my son started his walk with God, he was just a small stream. With the help of Pastor Chapman he became a mighty River. God put his love in my son’s heart and the River began to flow.

Everyone here will help to keep this river flowing. Each time you think of my son and his love for the Lord, this River will flow faster and faster. If you go down a river you will find a place where the flow is slow. You can just walk along and enjoy the river.

Then the River is flowing fast and stirring up the bottom, making the River look a little murky. Just stay with the River and you will come to the place where that murky water will become so crystal clear. The River will become so clear that you can see all the colored rocks on the bottom, looking like precious stone and jewels. My son’s love for the Lord became just that clear. One day far into the years to come, someone will be thinking back over his or her past years. Then they will say to themselves, “When I was young, a young man named Charlie Keith came and told me about the love of Jesus, and I am so glad.”

At that time, that River will flow so fast and strong it will flow right into heaven and be with our Lord. One day Jesus will be walking by and say what a clear and cool stream, and put His hand in just to refresh Himself. Jesus will say... all because He loved me. That is my son. His love for the Lord became a mighty River indeed. Until we are with you again... We Love You Son Mom & Dad

Donald passed away Saturday, March 15, 2014 at his home. He was born November 17, 1940 in Plainwell to the late Bernard “Speed” and Hazel (Parker) Holmes. A lifelong resident to the area, “Donnie” graduated from Otsego High School in 1959. He served his country in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the V.F.W. Post #3030, the American Legion Post #84 and the Moose Lodge #365. Don prided himself on his expertise in operating and repairing heavy equipment and was employed for many years by Operating Engineers Local 324, retiring in 1998. He was known for his devilish smile and his love of motorsports, particularly NASCAR. In his younger years, he raced everything from cars to boats, and later enjoyed watching his son Jeff compete at the BMX track. His leisure time involved slower-speed activities like bowling, ﬁshing and reading. One of Don's proudest accomplishments was raising his youngest son David alone to be a very nice and responsible young man. Surviving are his children, David Holmes, Traci (Rich) Walker, Jeff Holmes, Tami (Bob) Currie, and Jay Woodward; grandchildren, Matthew (Sara) Currie, Heather Currie, Nick, Josh and Leah Walker; sisters, Joyce (Daniel) McClellan and Carol (Ronald) Lovelace; many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and a memorial luncheon is scheduled for Sunday, March 23 at 1 PM at the V.F.W. Post in Otsego. Burial of ashes will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta on a later date. Contributions in memory of Don may be made to the American Heart Association. AGE 93 – PLAINWELL, MI May passed away on March 10, 2014 at the home of her son after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. May was born in Grand Rapids, MI on May 19, 1921 to Clarence and Nellie DeYoung. In 1945 she married Leon C. Symonds who preceded her in death in 2006. Together they owned and operated Symonds Jewelry for 16 years before retiring and moving to Marion, MI. May liked to work jigsaw puzzles and word find puzzles. She enjoyed gardening and was a great cook. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. May is survived by her children Linda Spence, Lorraine (Ray) Caswell of Otsego, MI and Phillip (Pam) Symonds of Hersey, MI; sister-in-law Doris DeYoung of Kentwood, MI; 6 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter. Cremation has taken place.

Irene passed away Sunday, March 16, 2014 at Life Care Center of Plainwell. She was born June 3, 1928 in Kalamazoo, MI to Albert and Elizabeth (Vermulen) Nuyen. Irene graduated from Plainwell High School in 1947. In 1955 she was married to Floyd “Pete” Ciesielski and they enjoyed life together until Pete’s death in 1976. Irene worked for Michigan Bell Telephone for 17 years, retiring in 1974. Following her retirement she worked for the DNR field office in Plainwell for several years then as an office manager for KalPak Inc. for 14 years, retiring in 1993. She loved golfing, fishing and bowling and was an active member of 12th St. Baptist Church. Surviving are her son, Michael “Mick” Ciesielski of Mattawan; her granddaughter, Aimee Lee (Brad Herrington) Fultz of Plainwell; greatgrandchildren, Alex and Emma Herrington and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Pete in 1976; her son Dennis in 1994 and by her siblings, Hermina, Kathryn, Albert Jr., William and Bertha. Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Pastor Thaddeus Stout officiated. Burial followed at Hillside Cemetery, Plainwell. He served our country in the Marine Corps during WWII serving in the Pacific Rim. In 1985 he retired from Checker Motors after 30 years. He was preceded in death by his first wife Ruth in 1990, his son Grant in 2007, his brother Bob and his sister Renabel Crowell. In 1992 he married the former Doris Pickett who survives. He is also survived by his son Gary, his daughter Barbara Arcan, step children Jim, Gail, Jerry and Robert Pickett, grandchildren Larry & Mark Areaux, Laura Ampey, Cindy Wagner and beloved grandson Luke Sutherland, 9 great-grandchildren, his daughter-in-law Bridget, his brothers Warren (Lou) and Hugh Sutherland as well as many other relatives. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 21, 2014 at 11:00 a.m.at Life Story Funeral Homes, Plainwell 120 S. Woodhams to read his complete life story, archive a photo or memory and sign his guest book. In lieu of flowers donations to Wings of Hope Hospice would be greatly appreciated.
