“THE SHAKING OF A CITY” By Rev. Dan Minor - revdminor@att.net _____________________________________

“When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, ‘Who is this?’” - Matthew 21:10

A city may be stirred for any number of reasons. It may be stirred by a catastrophic event of nature, by tragedy, violence, political upheaval or by some kind of celebration. When Jesus entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday the emotions were mixed. Matthew writes, “The whole city was stirred” (Matthew 21:l0). Eugene H. Peterson’s writes, “… the whole city was shaken, unnerved …” Luke said “As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it” (Luke l9:41). Even the enemies of Jesus conceded “… The whole world has gone after him!” (John 12:19). What do we make of this? What do we make of a God who shakes a city to its core, reduces God to tears and electrifies a great crowd of people? For one thing, Jerusalem has a long history of attacks and wars. It has been destroyed at least twice. It has always been a political and religious center. Whenever you mix politics and religion, emotions will run high. Shouts of “Hosanna” literally meant “save now” and the great masses of people were expecting Jesus to lead a revolt against Rome. The palm was a national symbol of an independent Palestine. For another, some emotions were pure excitement. It was Passover time and Jewish pilgrims from all over the world were just glad to be present. The population easily tripled during Passover time. Moreover, some were simply curious. Many were just receiving the news of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead (John 11:43, 44) and wanted to see this wonder worker for themselves. For Jesus, Palm Sunday marked the end of privacy and safety. It was a deliberate, well planned and carefully orchestrated attempt to be seen by the largest number of people at one time. It was an open challenge to priestly and political authorities of the time, a collision course with history. As we shall see in the coming weeks, Palm Sunday was just the beginning of a series of tragic events which led to His death on a cross for our sins. He came as God’s Messiah, not to bring war but peace. He came in love, not hate. When God saw their spiritual blindness, all He could do was cry (Luke l9:41, 42). The question is, are we shaken (in a good way) when the Lord of salvation visits us? Prayer: Dear Lord, come to us. Stir us out of our complacency. Amen.

He was an avid bowler and shuffle board player and loved to fish. Joe enjoyed helping others whenever the chance arose. He was a busy body, always on the go, always looking for something to keep him busy. Joe is survived by his wife and partner of 36 years, Becky Hicks-Predum; daughters, Julie Jo (Billy) Shannon and Amy Parrish; grandchildren, Jamie, Kyle, Sarah and Ashton; siblings, Treva Schoneboom, Russell Predum, Roland Predum, Michael (Iva) Predum, Bonnie (Bill) Putman and Clare (Beverly) Predum and several nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Mikey Predum. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Adelia McNutt, Alvin Predum and Becky Pantale. A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, March 2, 2018 at 1:00 PM at Gun River Conservation Club, 689 11th St., Plainwell, MI 49080. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Charles passed away Wednesday, February 28, 2018 in Otsego. He was born November 19, 1938 in Plainwell, the son of Roscoe and Marion (Darrow) Hill. For many years Charles and his brother Marty owned and operated several Harding’s Markets including ones in Plainwell and Otsego. He enjoyed traveling in the U.S. and had traveled in several European countries. He also enjoyed toy trains, yard work, feeding birds and spending time at their cottage at 3 Mile Lake in Paw Paw. Surviving are his wife, Betsy; siblings, Sharon MacDonald and Martin and Catherine Hill, both of Plainwell; 6 nieces and nephews, Mark, Todd and Matthew MacDonald, Daniel Hill, Catherine Cox and Jon Hill; several great nieces and nephews. Friends may visit with Charles’ family from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M., Sunday, March 4, 2018 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego and from 10:00 A.M. to the service time at 11:00 A.M., Monday, March 5, 2018 at Faith Chapel Ministries, 7736 W. G Ave., Alamo, with Pastor Thomas Koning, officiating. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery, Plainwell. Those desiring may make memorial contributions in Charles’ name to Faith Chapel. Erwin died Saturday, February 10, 2018 at the Battle Creek V.A. Nursing Home. He was born January 19, 1928 to Claude and Hulda (Amick) Honeysett of Plainwell. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and three brothers. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ruth in 1995. Jack is survived by two daughters, Joann and Sandy, both of Gobles, his brother Ivan (Sadie) Honeysett of Plainwell, several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Also surviving is his companion of 20 years, Mary Merchant and her family. In keeping with his wishes, Jack has been cremated. A private burial ceremony will take place at a later date.

Sonny passed away Tuesday, February 27, 2018 in Kalamazoo. He was born July 31, 1937 in Plainwell, the son of Burdett and Helen (Cole) Belcher. Sonny was a 1956 Otsego High School graduate and had served in the Army Reserves. For 44 years he had worked at Georgia Pacific until his retirement in 2000. In his spare time Sonny enjoyed following NASCAR especially Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Jr., and watching any team play baseball and hockey, especially the Red Wings. He had been a volunteer for the Kalamazoo Westwood Fire Department for 10 years and the Lawton Fire Department for 42 years. Sonny was a member of the Kalamazoo Moose Lodge. In 1956 he married Altha Laws who survives. Also surviving are his sons, Jeffery (Marjorie) Belcher of Kalamazoo and Scott (Heather) Belcher of NC; 3 wonderful granddaughters, Courtney, Maureen and Zoe and his best friend, Dick. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Dolores. A Memorial Luncheon will be held Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 4:00 P.M. at the Lawton Fire Dept., 125 S. Main Street, Lawton. AGE 95 – LAKE WALES, FL Pauline May Boball passed away Sunday, February 18, 2018 at Savannah Court in Lake Wales, Florida. She was born on November 29, 1922 in Bloomingdale, the daughter of Clarence and Ada (Kriegmus) Irons. Pauline had been a registered nurse at Borgess-Pipp Hospital until her retirement and in 1983 moved to Florida. In her spare time she enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting, reading and loved following the Detroit Tigers and Tampa Bay Rays Baseball. She attended the First Baptist Church of Frostproof, Florida. Pauline spent more than 75 years together with her husband, Joseph Boball, until his passing in 2015. Surviving are her grandson, Patrick Stafford; granddaughter, Krista (Richard) Stafford-Boomers and great-grandchildren, Shawn and Stephanie. Funeral services were held Monday, February 26, 2018, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, with Pastor George Osborn officiating. Burial followed at Hillside Cemetery in Plainwell. Merle E. (Landes) KNIGHT AGE 94 – OTSEGO, MI

Merle E.L. Knight joined friends and family members in Heaven on February 22, 2018, departing her earthly home at Park Village Pines, Kalamazoo. Born April 14, 1923 in Midale, Montana, Merle was the 3rd child of six born to Carroll E. and Myrtle (Bannan) Landes. As a girl she enjoyed living on a farm with many animals, 4-H Club sewing and attending a one-room schoolhouse where the Landes kids made up one-half of the attending children. After graduating from Mason High School in Mason, MI, Merle joined the workforce as a waitress at the Olympia Restaurant in downtown Kalamazoo where she met her soon to be husband, Maynard “Shorty” Knight. Roller skating at Northlake Roller Rink, playing cards with Maynard’s siblings and attending many sporting events cinched the love in their hearts and Shorty proposed in December 1942…however, World War II interrupted their plans. After Maynard departed for the Army, Merle was determined to also serve her country and joined the Navy WAVES in October 1944 where she was stationed at Cecil Field, Jacksonville, FL, “Lefty” proudly played on the first WAVES softball team as an outfielder in 1945. On September 27, 1946, after their military discharges, Merle married Maynard and settled in Otsego. Primarily a stay at home mom to five, Merle found many ways to serve her community over the years: as Otsego Band Boosters President and “pie maker extraordinaire” for the Allegan County Fair Band Booster Booth, as a 4-H leader for over 15 years, as a proud lifetime league bowler (over 50 years) at Plainwell Lanes, as an election worker for the Otsego Township Democratic Party for many years and as a committed fan of sporting events for her children and grandchildren, of whom she was extremely proud. Her devoted family will remember her as a classy and feisty lady, who loved well and crocheted constantly! (“Her children respect and bless her.” Proverbs 31:28 msg) Surviving along with her husband of 71 years are her three children, 2 sons-in-law and 11 grandchildren: Andrew & Pam Knight (Jef & Jamie Sue Knight and Adam & Samantha Knight), Steve & Pam DeBoer (Chris & Kara DeBoer and Curt & Amy DeBoer), Bill & Marlita Knight Walker (Teg & Mikkel Walker Tegelaar, Ben & Jenny Walker and Keith & Melody Walker Hendren), Andy & Trish Winter (Joe & Amanda Winter Tiseo and Allison Winter) Maynard & Donna Knight (Brett Knight and Alise Knight); 19 great-grandchildren with 2 more on the way; sister, Doris Landes Herrington; sisters-in-law, Reva Knight and Gloria Ritchie and many nieces and nephews. Merle was preceded in death by her daughters, Arlene Knight DeBoer and Amy Knight Winter; her sisters Alta Landes Carpenter and Hazel Landes Cassell; her brothers, Howard Landes and Keith Landes as well as many sisters and brothers-in-law. Funeral services were held Monday, February 26, 2018, at the Otsego United Methodist Church with Reverend Bill Walker officiating. A private family burial will take place at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego at a later time. Contributions in memory of Merle may be directed to the Park Village Pines Employee Appreciation Fund, which will encourage and support the amazing staff who deeply loved Merle.
