Scammers are using the news that the federal government will send one-time payments to millions of people across the country as part of the federal economic relief response to COVID-19 to steal personal information. The Michigan Department of Attorney General has already received reports that residents are getting emails from websites appearing to be official demanding that they provide PayPal, bank account or other financial information to receive the $1,200 federal stimulus payment immediately. The Attorney General’s office is reminding anyone who receives a text, email or phone call from someone claiming to be from the government with a check for them — DO NOT FALL FOR IT. These fake phishing scams will likely ask for a person’s bank account information and insist $1,000 or more will be deposited directly into his or her bank account. Personal information should not be given to anyone unless the provider of that information is absolutely certain of the identity of the person requesting it. For the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding the federal stimulus payment and specific disbursement details, only visit the IRS website.

There is at least one fact about the resurrection of Jesus Christ that stands out. It is a sad truth. No one expected it! Although Jesus foretold it during the last months of his life on earth, no one, not even the disciples, expected it to happen.
The women, who were first to the tomb, were surprised to find the tomb empty. John, the gospel writer, adds a commentary (“They still did not understand from the Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead” – John 20:9). The initial reaction of the disciples was disbelief (Luke 24:11), wonder (Luke 24:11), fear (Luke 24:37) and doubt (John 20:24-25).
Here are three surprising facts of the resurrection: l. Hope Wins!
One cannot live without hope. A fairly recent study by The Pew Research Center says that depression is increasing among U.S. teens. It affects persons of all ages. Old King Solomon was right when he said, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick …” (Proverbs 13:12). Among other things, Jesus came to put a face on hope. Hope changes everything. Our God is a “God of hope” (Romans 15:13).It is not surprising that God created us with the capacity to hope (Romans 15:13). In I Peter 1:3 we read, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! Across the ages, the timeless words of Apostle Paul can be heard, “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (I Corinthians 15:55-57). The message of Easter is that the dead shall live again. Jesus said, “Because I live, you shall live also” (John 14:19). In his vision of the Holy City, John writes these glorious words, “… and death shall be no more…” (Revelation 21:4).
3. Evil Does Not Have the Last Word!
It is easy to feel discouraged in a world where evil runs rampant. Many of us remember where we were and what we were doing on 9/11. We remember the initial shock, disbelief, panic and fear. We realized how fragile human life is. On the Sunday following 9/11 churches experienced an increase in worship attendance. My sermon topic for that Sunday was “God is Our Refuge and Strength” (Psalm 46). We closed the service by singing Martin Luther’s famous hymn which reads in part:
“And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, we will not fear, for God hath willed his truth to triumph through us…”
In other words, truth and love will always have the last word.
An older gentleman was reading from the Book of Revelation (New Testament). Someone asked him, “Do you understand what you are reading?” The man answered, “I do not understand everything but I know one thing for sure… God will win in the end!”
The primary message of Easter is that God keeps God’s promises. No surprise there!

Ernest G. COCHRAN AGE 81 - ALLEGAN, MI
Ernie passed away Saturday, April 4, 2020 at the Wings Home in Allegan. He was born April 23, 1938 in Butler, Ohio, the son of Eugene and Ruby (McCullough) Cochran. Ernie proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He worked at Rockwell International for 22 years, KTS Saw and Clausing Industrial Inc. until his retirement in 2001. As a young man Ernie was a skilled basketball player and had coached little league in Ohio. He was an Ohio State University fan and loved taking his grandchildren fishing and camping. Ernie was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Otsego and a leader for the Lutheran Boy Pioneers. On October 3, 1959 in Otsego, he married Janice Winter who survives. Also surviving are his children, Randy (Kim) Cochran of Florida and Melody (Tim) Mohrland of Allegan; 6 grandchildren, Ashley, Kyle, Shannon, Trey, Amber and Audrie; great-grandchildren, Peyton, Ella, Lilly, Arla, Charlotte and other due soon; siblings, Sharon (Dan) Workman, Connie Cochran, Dennis (Mary Beth) Cochran and Timothy Cochran all of Ohio; sister-in-law, Sandy Cochran of Ohio along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant sister, Caroyln and brothers, Larry and Ronald Cochran. Private family services will take place on Wednesday, April 8, 2020 at 11am at Peace Lutheran Church in Otsego with Pastor Nathanial Timmermann officiating. Friends wishing to participate may view a livestream of the service at peaceotsego.org. Cremation will follow. Burial of ashes will take place at Trowbridge Township Cemetery at a later time. Gary M. DROBNY AGE 77 - GOBLES, MI
Gary passed away Thursday, April 2, 2020 at his home in Gobles. He was born October 24, 1943 in Kalamazoo, the son of Edward and Vawn (Campbell) Drobny. Gary proudly served his country in the U.S. Army serving in Germany during the Vietnam War. As a young boy Gary was a member of the FFA and 4H. He liked spending summers at Baseline Lake, waterskiing and riding horses. He was an Otsego High School graduate and attended Michigan State University’s Agricultural Program. For many years he worked on the family farms with his father and brother and most recently with his nephews until his retirement. In his free time he enjoyed hunting, watching things grow, trips to the casino, playing poker and his dog, Mason. More than anything he loved spending time with his friends and family especially his grandchildren. In 2002 he married Harriett Smith who survives. Also surviving are his daughter, Christine (Russ) Carpenter of Portage; stepsons, Gary Hawley of Gobles and Jimmy Hawley of Florida; 6 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; sister, Veronica (Ken) Crowell of Allegan and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Charles. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Contributions in memory of Gary may be made to the American Cancer Society. Marjorie passed away Saturday, April 4, 2020 at Park Village Pines in Kalamazoo. She was born January 23, 1930 in Battle Creek, the daughter of Donald and Margaret Fosdick. Marjorie was a graduate of Lakeview High School where she played saxophone in the school band. She graduated from Argubright Business College and worked as a secretary at Minges Brook School in Battle Creek and Armintrout Nursery in Allegan until her retirement. Marjorie was a member and taught Sunday school at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Battle Creek and Grace Episcopal Church in Holland. On February 11, 1950 she married Harold Combs who survives. Also surviving are her children, Colleen (Rick) Ritchie, Sheryl (Ken) McGuffin and Dennis Combs; grandchildren, Ryan (Linley) Combs, Kevin (Sara) Combs, Johnathon (Stacey) McGuffin and Patrick (Megan) McGuffin; brother, Roger (Pat) Fosdick along with her greatgrandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. Burial of ashes will take place at Liberty Street Cemetery in Alamo Township. AGE 54 - PLAINWELL, MI Bruce passed away Sunday, April 5, 2020 from complications due to diabetes at the Wings Home in Allegan. He was born November 24, 1965 in Cadillac, the son of Donald and Laura (Hittle) Ruhl. Bruce worked at O’Reilly Auto Parts in Otsego and was a bus aide for AAESA. He loved playing the piano and singing at area churches including Friendship Wesleyan Church where he was an active member. On August 8, 1987 he married Deborah Nelson who survives. Also surviving are his daughter, Margaret “Maggie” Ruhl; mother, Laura of Wyoming; siblings, Kelvin (Melissa) Ruhl of Cadillac and Darlene Ruhl of Wyoming along with several nieces, nephews and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his father. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Friendship Wesleyan Church at a later time. Beulah Roberta Pallett passed away Saturday, April 4, 2020. She was born December 28, 1918 in Plainwell, Michigan to the late Harley C. and Lillian D. (Bump) Haskins. Beulah loved to talk and never met a stranger; she was very fun to be around. Her hobbies included quilting and knitting. She was preceded in death by her husband, Darwin “Ted” Pallett in 2002 and sister, Beverly Kelsey. Beulah is survived by her two sons, Harley Pallett and former daughter-in-law, Donna Fisher, and Bill and Sally Pallett, all of Plainwell; four grandchildren, Mike Pallett, Randall (Deb) Pallett, Chris (Jackie) Pallett, all of Plainwell, and Tim (Tammy) Pallett of Bridgman; five great-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brother, John (Diana) Haskins of Kalamazoo; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Terri Macak. In accordance with her wishes, there will be no visitation or services. Private interment will take place in Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery. Lewis Arthur HUISMAN AGE 96 - SHELBYVILLE, MI
Lewis passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2020 at the age of 96. Lewis was born on January 18, 1924 in Wyoming, MI. He was the son of Derk and Myrtle (Connor) Huisman. He graduated from Martin High School with the Class of 1941. After high school he served his country in the United States Army and then after it converted to the United States Air Force, During World War II he was awarded the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, EAME Ribbon with four Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a tech sergeant/flight engineer on a B24 Bomber stationed in England and served in Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. On June 16, 1945 he married Lois Hurdelbrink. And together they had two children: Karen and Steve. After the military he was employed as a meat cutter at Boysen’s IGA in Martin and on the family farm. Then for over 41 years as a meat inspector for the State of Michigan and Federal government. He was proud of the fact that in 41 years in the work force, he only missed two days of work. He was also one of the original firefighters for the Orangeville Twp fire department. In his more recent years, he attended Gun Lake Community Church and Leighton United Methodist Church. Lewis will be missed by all that knew him and will be remembered as loving nature, social, a people person, hard worker, talkative and his love for his family and grandchildren. He is survived by his two children: Karen McCarter, of Millersburg; Steve (Terri) Huisman, of Republic; four grandchildren: Charles Anez, of Belding; Tricia Anez, of Rogers City; LeAnn (Jon) Graban, of Farmington Hills; and Roxann (Chris) Williams, of Escanaba; five great grandchildren: Avery, Taylor, Jordan, James, and Thomas. He is also survived by his special companion Lee Biesbrock, of Shelbyville. He is preceded by his wife Lois in 2012. Lewis will have a graveside burial with his family on Wednesday, at 11am at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Orangeville. The family plans to have a public gathering at a later date. AGE 85 - KALAMAZOO, MI Bob went to be with Jesus on Wednesday, April 8, 2020 at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. He was born at home in Otsego on May 5, 1934, the son of James and Naomi (Punches) Parrish. Bob proudly served his country in the U.S. Airforce and was honorably discharged as an Airman 1st Class. He was a 1952 Otsego High School graduate and attended North Park College in Chicago and Western Michigan University. Bob had worked at several area businesses including Mac Sim Bar, D&C Stores, JCPenney, New York Life and eventually worked independently as an investment broker. Bob was a people person and made lifelong friends with many of his clients. In his free time Bob enjoyed traveling, spending time with his family, doing remodeling projects with his kids and building play structures for his grandchildren. Bob had a strong faith and was a member of several area churches over the years, most recently at Oakwood Bible Church. On September 1, 1956 at the Otsego Baptist Church he married Nancy Lancaster who survives. Also surviving are his son, Robert Jr (Sheryl) Parrish of Allegan; son-in-law, Robert Batey of Kalamazoo; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Eric) Rittenberry, Thomas (Aime) Batey and Nathan Parrish of Allegan; brother, Jack (Judy) Parrish; sisters-in-law, Barbara Parrish, Jackie Parrish, Terri Parrish, Irma Lancaster and Kathleen Patti and brothers-in-law, Michael (Pam) Lancaster and James Ellinger. He was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, Lindon and Maida Lancaster; daughter, Deborah Batey; siblings, Jean Ellinger, Larry, Garry and Jim Parrish; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Lancaster and brother-in-law, James Lancaster. A private family graveside service will take place at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego. A memorial service will be held at a later time.
