Stress hits us all in life, and while a little stress is good, it keeps us focused and motivated, too much of it and it can grind our lives to a complete halt. When you’re feeling overwhelmed and stressed-out, you may become paralyzed and unable to do much of anything. Just as bad are unhealthy coping methods to deal with stress. Turning to food, alcohol or drugs often just turns one set of problems into another that can balloon out of control. It’s better to avoid those unhealthy coping mechanisms from the start, and find good ways to keep your stress under control. There are many ways to tame your stress and keep it at bay. Here are 20 tips to tame your stress today, and keep the stress monsters at bay. 1. Perform diaphragmatic or “deep breathing” exercises. Lie face down on the floor and begin breathing deeply and slowly, with your hands resting under your face. Do this for five minutes. 2. Sit in a reclining chair. Put a hand on your abdomen and a hand on your chest. As you breathe, make sure the hand on your abdomen is moving up and down rather than one on your chest. If the hand on your abdomen is moving you are breathing deeply and slowly. 3. Try progressive muscle relaxation or “deep muscle” relaxation. Progressively tense and relax each muscle group in your body. Learn the difference between muscle tension and relaxation. 4. Meditate. Use visualization or guided imagery to

help you learn to be one with your thoughts. Sit quietly with your eyes closed, imagining the sights, sounds and smells of your favorite place, such as a beach or mountain retreat. 5. Exercise regularly or take up yoga. 6. Consult a psychologist about the use of biofeedback. 7. Make time for music, art or other hobbies that help relax and distract you. 8. Learn to identify and monitor stressors. Come up with an organized plan for handling stressful situations. Be careful not to overgeneralize negative reactions to things. 9. Make a list of the important things you need to handle each day. Try to follow the list so you feel organized and on top of things. Put together a coping plan step by step so you have a sense of mastery. 10. Keep an eye on things that might suggest you’re not coping well. For example, are you smoking or drinking more, or sleeping less? 11. Keep a list of the large and little hassles in your day versus the major stressful events in your life. This helps you focus on the fact that you’re keeping track of and managing those as well as you can. 12. Set aside a time every day to work on relaxation. 13. Avoid using caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, junk food, binge eating and other drugs as your primary means for coping with stress. While they can be helpful once in awhile, using them as your only or usual method will re-

sult in longer-term problems, such as weight problems or alcoholism. 14. Learn to just say, “No” occasionally. It won’t hurt other people’s feelings as much as you think and is simply a method to be more assertive in your own life, to better help you meet your own needs. 15. Get the right amount of sleep. For most people, this is seven to nine hours a night. 16. Cultivate a sense of humor; laugh. 17. Research has shown that having a close, confiding relationship protects you from many stresses. 18. Don’t run from your problems! This only makes them worse. 19. Talk to your family and friends. See if they can help. 20. If these tips don’t help, or you’ve tried a lot of them with little luck in better taming the stress in your life, it may be time to consider taking it up a notch. A mental health professional — such as a psychologist — can help teach you more effective methods for handling stress in a healthy way in your life. Such psychotherapy is short-term and time-limited, with a focus on helping you better deal with stress. Remember — we do have control over the stress and choices we make in our lives. It sometimes takes a little practice and effort to put some of these techniques into play in your life. But once you do so, you may be pleasantly surprised at the positive benefits you’ll receive.

In the 1870's, folks came from all over the Midwest to rejuvenate their ailing bodies in the "medicinal" waters at the Otsego Mineral Springs Bath House. The Mineral Springs had difficulty staying in business after George Bardeen and a group of investors brought the first paper mill to Otsego in 1887. The Bardeen Mill was located where USG Paper is today. Part of the Bardeen Building is still standing, and one of the machines is still in use. The mill drastically lowered the level of the spring water, rendering the Mineral Springs Bath House useless.

PRINCE OF PEACE PALM SUNDAY PARADE

“When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, ‘Who is this?’” - Matthew 21:10

Palm Sunday was when the Prince of Peace became the King of Peace, in fulfillment to Zechariah’s prophecy (Zechariah 9:9; Matthew 21:5). On this special day the church remembers Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem to shouts of “Hosanna” (meaning “save now”). The word comes from the ll8th Psalm (Hoshiana). The Israelites recited this psalm and waved palm branches during their annual procession or parade at the “Festival of Booths.” Palm Sunday was a different kind of parade. It was the first day of the last week of our Lord’s life on earth. The incredible thing is that He bravely rode into the city fully aware this parade would lead to a cross. What courage! What determination! What poise under pressure! The key verse in Matthew’s account comes in the form of a question: “Who is this?” It is a question all of us must answer. Consider 3 take-aways: 1. He Knew Who He was Jesus came to earth as God’s son (John 3:16) so that we might believe and become God’s children (John l: 12). We can face any challenge, endure any pain, and overcome any fear as long as we know we are God’s children. 2. He Knew Where He was going From the time He was a teen-ager, Jesus knew He must be about His father’s business (Luke 2:49). On Palm Sunday Jesus did not ride on a horse (symbol of war) but on a donkey (symbol of peace). Jesus has empowered us to be on the same mission … a mission of peace (Matthew 5:9). There is nothing more fulfilling than living with a sense of purpose. 3. He knew Who was with Him As hard as it was, Jesus knew His heavenly Father would see him through. Over the years I have heard the testimony of many people “I don’t know how I could have gone through that situation without God’s help.” Jesus knew who He was and Whose He was … so can we. Jesus knew His life purpose … so can we. Jesus knew Who was with Him … so can we. Can I hear an amen? Prayer: Come, King of Peace, we open our hearts and lives to you. Amen.

Obituaries KATHIE D. LACEY AGE 56 – STURGIS Formerly of Otsego

Words are just not enough to sum up the life of Kathie. Born on June 9, 1957, she was a loving mother and grandmother, a giving wife, a member of St. John’s Church of Lutheran Sturgis, MI, a devoted Christian and a friend of all. She loved her family more than anything else in this world. Kathie was never shy when it came to her faith and family. Kathie graduated with the class of 1975 at Otsego High School. In 1976 she met Patrick Lacey and they married October 27, 1979. Their marriage is one of strong faith and love for over 34 years. She was employed for the last five years at Berkshire Hathaway Home Services of Sturgis, formally Prudential One Real Estate, where she supported a team of real estate agents. Kathie had a rare talent of being able to host the best parties known to mankind; everyone had fun and remembered them forever. She was a God fearing woman and held her faith until the end. She fought hard until her last breath was taken on April 7th in the early afternoon. She will be forever missed and forever loved by all. Kathie is survived by her parents Larry and Ardelle Hutchinson; her husband Patrick; her children Sean (Kileigh) Lacey and Sarah (Ryan) Moenke; the light of her life, granddaughter Grace; her siblings, sister Julie (Dave) Levett and brother Marty (Kelley) Hutchinson; many nieces and nephews; and a great niece and great nephew. Friends may visit with Kathie’s family at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego from 2 to 4 P.M. and 6 to 8 P.M. Friday. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday at Peace Lutheran Church, Otsego, Pastor Paul Stern officiating. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery, Plainwell. Mary Catherine LAIDLAW AGE 65 - OTSEGO

Mary passed away Monday, April 7, 2014, at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo. She was born December 21, 1948 in Otsego to Russell and Caroline (Kruss) Conway. Mary was a graduate of Otsego High School and KVCC. She had worked for Meijer, Pipp Hospital and as a crossing guard for Allegan Street School in Otsego. She enjoyed doing word puzzles and had been a member of the Otsego Church of God. On January 23, 1976 she married Douglas E. Laidlaw who survives. Also surviving are her children, Melisa (Jim) Trojanowski of New Baltimore, MI, Russell Laidlaw and Mike Laidlaw, both of Otsego; 5 grandchildren Ryan Wilson, Justin (Jasmine) Wilson, Robbie Trojanowski, Katelyn Trojanowski and Emily Rose; siblings, Maggie Conway of Allegan and Thomas Conway of CA; many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Funeral services were held Friday, April 11, 2014 with Pastor Jim Lemen officiating. Burial followed at Mt. Home Cemetery.
