SPRING HOME TRANSFORMATIONS I 2019
Home and Garden Improvements That Will Benefit Local Wildlife migrating birds, and millions of wild birds are killed annually flying into windows. However, a simple home improvement project can make your home safer for birds. Birds can see certain light frequencies that humans can’t, so by applying UV decals and UV liquid to your home’s windows and sliding glass doors, you can make windows visible to birds in a way that won’t obstruct your own view.
(StatePoint) When it comes to changing the world, your own backyard is a great place to start. As you make home improvements, consider their potential to benefit local wildlife that travel in and around your property. Here are a few important steps you can take.
promoting a healthy local ecosystem while providing proper nourishment and a natural habitat for visiting wildlife, whether that be insects, birds or furry creatures. Because native plant species are meant to thrive in your local climate, they will require less maintenance, which means a beautiful yard with less stress. Prevent Bird Strikes
Plant Native Species By planning native species exclusively in your garden and yard, you will be
You may not realize it, but your home poses a risk to birds. Window strikes are common among many species of
“Protecting birds adds beauty to your garden, is good for the environment and most importantly, saves lives,” says Spencer Schock, founder of WindowAlert, a company that offers UV decals and UV Liquid.
Build a Bird house Add beauty to your yard with a wooden bird house. Find a design you love or get creative and craft your own, using your own home’s architecture for inspiration. A strategically placed bird house -- either within three feet of a window or over 30 feet away -- will help avoid bird strikes. Be a good neighbor -- not just to the other humans. Make improvements to your home that will help protect both local and migratory wildlife.
The UV decals and liquid from WindowAlert have been proven to effectively alter the flight path of birds to prevent window strikes. The coating will look like etched glass to the human eye, but be very visible to a bird. As UV reflectivity may fade over time, it’s important to replace the decals and liquid every four months. Application techniques can be found by visiting WindowAlert.com.

SPRING HOME TRANSFORMATIONS I 2019
Your Home is Your Castle: How to Protect it Through the Years product manager, Erie Insurance. “That’s why we recommend that all homeowners get ‘guaranteed replacement cost’ coverage.” In addition to making sure your insurance keeps up with inflation, experts also recommend homeowners reach out to their insurance agent when: • You remodel: 2019 is expected to be a popular year for remodeling, according to the Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity. Whether it’s putting on an addition or finishing the basement, be sure the extra square footage and finishes are listed on your policy. Why? If something were to happen (think: fire, water damage, etc.), you’ll want your insurance policy to provide enough funds for everything to be repaired or replaced.
(StatePoint) For many people, owning a home is the American dream, and the single biggest financial investment they will ever make. With the stakes so high, in addition to picking out the perfect property, it’s critical to have the right insurance. While homeowners may start out with the right amount when they first purchase their
home, over time, their policy can become outdated. Why? One big reason is inflation. “Labor and building material costs go up over time, which means that if your home were destroyed by a fire or natural disaster, for example, and you had to rebuild it in today’s dollars, it would very likely cost much more,” said Bob Buckel, vice president and
• You make changes to outdoor space: The same is true with any remodeling to your outdoor space. The addition of an inground pool or fence can add value to your home. There are also liability concerns associated with certain equipment, such as a swimming pool or trampoline. Unfortunately, at least 148 children drowned in swimming pools last summer and many more were injured, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. You’ll

want to make sure you’re properly covered in the event of an accident. • You install a security system: You may qualify for a discount on your insurance if you’ve recently installed a security system. One study by the Electronic Security Association (ESA) looked at the 10 largest insurance companies and found many offer worthwhile premium discounts. • You start a home-based business: Whether you have a side hustle or draw a full-time income from a home-based business, you may not have the right coverage in place. For example, if you’re selling LuLaRoe clothing and there’s a fire, your merchandise might not be covered since typical policies don’t always cover home-based businesses. You’ll most likely need an incidental business endorsement. Coverage from Erie Insurance could cost about $30 to $70 per year. • You acquire valuables: Homeowners insurance covers your belongings, but generally only up to a certain dollar amount per item. So, if you acquire an expensive item, such as an engagement ring, a fur or a valuable artwork, you should talk to your insurance agent about adding special coverage. You may also need to provide a receipt or appraisal.

Quick and simple ways to make a front door pop Visitors’ impressions of a home are often dictated by the home’s entryway. Must as one may judge a book by its cover, the same can be said about the impression that a front door and entryway can create, regardless of how accurate that impression is. Making certain changes to an entryway can go a long way toward improving curb appeal. Entryways also can set the scene for a home’s interior. Whether one chooses to be classic or bold, modern or traditional, there are various ways to quickly transform a home’s entryway. • Bold front door color: Color can dramatically enhance an entryway. Painting an existing door or replacing it with a more vivid option can do the trick. The DIY Network says certain colors stand out as favorites. These
include turquoise, yellow, red, indigo, orange, and black. The door color should complement the other shades of the home, such as those on siding and trim. • Custom walkway: Guide guests right to the front door with an attractive (and safe) walkway. Stamped concrete or decorative paver blocks may fit the bill. This walkway can extend to the street or to the driveway. • Contain plants. Landscaping around the entryway should be neat and well-tended. Overgrown plants or shrubbery may give off an air of neglect. Container plants and carefully curated shrubs can create a neat and inviting aura. • Highlight the address. Make sure the home can be found easily with

bold and decorative house numbers. Consider two different address signs: one illuminated and easily viewed from the curb, and another closer to the front door. • Utilize high-end materials. The relatively small area of real estate by the front door enables homeowners to splurge on more opulent materials that can really add a feeling of luxury. These can include colorful tiles, ornate planters, decorative wooden
doors, or elaborate knobs and lighting fixtures. • Add architectural details. Find out which architectural elements will meld with the style of the home and then incorporate them. Moldings, columns, shutters, and trim are areas to consider. The entryway to a home garners a lot of attention. Homeowners can enhance their spaces with entryways that really make a statement.

When It Can Be Smart to Hire a Painting Pro interior and exterior surfaces, they understand which techniques can improve efficiency. That means a professional job can typically be completed much more quickly than a DIY project.
Few things can revitalize a home more readily than a fresh coat of paint.
Even though some people think they’ll save money by painting their own homes, that’s not necessarily true. Professionals already have all the equipment necessary, unlike novices who may need to make repeated and potentially costly trips to the hardware store for supplies. Plus, if mistakes happen, DIYers have to spend additional time and money fixing them.
Thanks in part to the affordability of paint and its ease of application, painting is something that even novice DIYers can typically handle. According to the marketing advice guru Brandon Gaille, it is estimated that residential interior paint only lasts around three years before it needs to be updated. Exterior paint can fade, chip and peel due to various environmental factors. As a result, many homes can likely use a fresh coat of paint in at least one room. As DIY-friendly as painting can be, when attempting to paint the interior or exterior of their homes, homeowners may learn that some painting projects are best left to the professionals. Painting requires skill, patience and a knowledge of how various paints — including finishes for particular applications — will hold up. Novice painters may do more harm
than good by dripping paint on expensive carpeting or floors or fail to recognize the nuances that indicate a spot-on painting job. Professional painters have spent hours upon hours learning the ropes of what works — and what does not. Painters often understand that
painstaking preparatory work is crucial to getting pristine finished results. Walls and ceilings must be properly repaired and prepared even before a base coat is applied. Professional painters also have an eye for details. And because professional painters make a business out of doing
Safety can be a large motivator for turning painting over to a pro. Navigating exterior areas or tall interior ceilings can be challenging and may require scaffolding or tall ladders DIYers do not have. Risk of falls or other injuries increase with lack of experience. Painting can give a home a facelift, and oftentimes it is smart to turn the work over to professionals to ensure the job is done just right.

Emerging
Deck Trends
Custom-built decks can expand usable outdoor entertaining spaces. Decks can surround pools and create outdoor patio areas that make it easy to establish multitiered living spaces, improving the functionality of outdoor areas. Certain deck trends have emerged as industry experts’ top picks for the upcoming remodeling and renovation season. For those thinking of revamping an existing deck, or building an entirely new one, these trends are on point. • Established perimeters: “Picture framingâ€? is not a new trend, but one that has taken greater hold in recent years. The term refers to aesthetically appealing designs that conceal the ends of deck boards for a clean finish. Some designs feature contrasting material colors on the ends for even more impact. This helps create refined perimeters for a polished look. • Roof-top decking: Urban areas also can benefit from decking to create usable outdoor spaces. In fact, many
new condominium and townhouse communities are incorporating roof-top decks into their designs, particularly in communities with water views or other impressive vistas. HGTV experts suggest roof-top decks feature light-colored materials and fixtures to help keep the area cool even in direct sunlight. • Distressed hardwood: Builder and Developer, a management resource for professional homebuilders, says that the trend for using distressed hardwoods at home has migrated outside. Some decking manufacturers have recently introduced lowmaintenance composite deck boards that mimic the look and feel of distressed, rustic hardwood flooring. This weathered appearance gives the look of age without the upkeep of real aged wood.
• Mixed materials: Homeowners may be inspired by commercial eateries, breweries and urban markets in their exterior design choices. Decks featuring composite materials and aluminum railings blend sophistication, urban appeal and comfort.
• Wooden walkways: Decking can be the more traditional design people envision with a patio table or outdoor furniture. But it also can consist of wooden walkways or a low-laying patio to accentuate the yard.
• Personal touches: Homeowners can customize their decks with personal touches. It’s not unheard of to wrap columns in stone or glass tiles for more impact. And a vast array of decking colors now enables fun interpretations
0ÄŠÄ‹ÂŽ FŎęŴ ĹŽÂŽ 'ĆŻĹŽ 4Ĺ„ÂŽ~Ä FÄ‹Ć“ÇŒ
for outdoor areas. • Fire pit conversation area: Many decks can incorporate water or fire elements for visual appeal. Gas-fueled fire elements can expand the functionality of decks beyond the warm seasons, or make enjoying them practical on nights when the temperature plummets.
Decks are reimagined in many different ways with continually evolving trends.

A More Eco-Friendly Lawn is Just Steps Away environmentally conscious behaviors in other areas of their lives. The following are a handful of ways lawn care enthusiasts can incorporate eco-friendly practices into their landscaping routines. • Maintain an appropriate grass height. When temperatures start to peak in summer, homeowners may be tempted to cut their grass as close as possible so they can reduce the number of afternoons they spend riding or pushing a mower in the hot sun. But cutting too low makes the grass increasingly susceptible to infestations and disease, and such problems may need to be remedied with potentially harmful pesticides if no other approach proves effective. Even if it means an extra afternoon or two mowing under the hot sun, maintaining an appropriate grass height can lead to a healthier lawn, as longer grass soaks up more sunlight, allowing it to grow a deep root system that will help a lawn survive drought and other potential problems.
Maintaining a lush lawn is a healthy and rewarding hobby that affords homeowners to spend some time outdoors in nature. Lawn enthusiasts can make their hobby even healthier by adopting several ecofriendly lawn care strategies that not only make for a healthier lawn, but a healthier planet as well. Responsible landscaping has grown increasingly popular in recent years, as more and more homeowners are adopting eco-friendly lawn care practices in the same way they have embraced

• Cut back on harmful pesticides. Many homeowners now prefer to avoid pesticides at all costs, but sometimes pesticides are a last resort when lawns are falling victim to harmful insects and organisms. Homeowners who want to embrace more eco-friendly lawn care practices can cut back on their use of pesticides, first trying more environmentally friendly options. For example, biopesticides are made from naturally occurring materials, including animals, plants, bacteria, and certain minerals. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, biopesticides are often inherently less toxic than more conventional pesticides. In addition, biopesticides typically affect only the pest causing the problem, whereas broad

• Harvest rainwater. Lawns need water, especially when temperatures rise in the summer. But watering lawns can have an adverse effect on your community’s water supply, draining that supply and hurting the community in the long run. Homeowners who can harvest rainwater can drastically reduce their impact on their community water supply, thereby helping the planet and their community, especially if they reside in locales where water resources are traditionally scarce. When rainwater is harvested, it is collected from downspouts before it washes into nearby sewage systems. Many lawn and garden retailers sell rainwater harvesting systems, which homeowners can install themselves or pay a landscaping professional to install for them. • Lay mulch down around trees, shrubs and flower beds. Trees, shrubs and flower beds need water, especially in the summer when rising temperatures pose a threat to plants. Homeowners can cut back on the water they use to protect those plants by laying organic mulch in the spring. Organic mulch conserves moisture in soil, promoting stronger roots in plants and helping homeowners cut back on the amount of watering they need to maintain a garden that’s both healthy and pleasing to the eye. Organic mulch, which might be made of bark, is also heavy, making it hard for ugly weeds that rob plants of water to thrive.

Restore Rusty Tools Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegar-soaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

Herb Garden Centerpiece Fresh herbs can transform the flavor of favorite recipes and add a fresh spark to one’s palate when used during cooking or as a garnish. People who may not have the space or the inclination to create an outdoor garden should know that many herbs can be grown successfully indoors. Small in size compared to outdoor gardens, indoor herb gardens can be grown on a windowsill. Indoor herb gardens also can be housed in decorative containers, serving double-duty as living centerpieces on kitchen or dining room tables. Start by finding a container that
fits your decor. Punch holes in the bottom, if necessary, to allow for proper drainage. Line the bottom of the container with gravel or perlite to help with drainage, then top with potting soil. Position small herb plants and fill in with extra potting soil. Sage, thyme, dill, and rosemary are good starters, but any herbs will do. Add a topdressing of peat moss to assist with water retention and help the plants thrive. Place the container in your desired location and enjoy the welcoming aromas and fresh herbs at your fingertips.

SPRING HOME TRANSFORMATIONS I 2019
Using a Generator During a Power Outage Don’t Overload Your Generator
Determine the amount of power you will need to operate the things you plan to connect to the generator. • Light bulb wattage indicates the power needed for lighting. Appliance and equipment labels indicate their power requirements. • If you cannot determine the amount of power you will need, ask an electrician. • Make sure your generator produces more power than will be drawn by the things you connect to the generator, including the initial surge when it is turned on. If your generator does not produce enough power to operate everything at once, stagger the use of your equipment. • If your equipment draws more power than the generator can produce, you may blow a fuse on the generator or damage the connected equipment. Use Your Generator Safely • Incorrect generator use can lead to carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning from the toxic engine exhaust, electric shock or electrocution and fire. Follow the directions supplied with the generator. Never Use a Portable Generator Indoors • Never use a portable generator in a garage, carport, basement, crawlspace, or other enclosed or partially enclosed area, even with ventilation. Opening doors and windows or using fans will not prevent CO buildup in the home. • If you start to feel sick, dizzy, or weak while using a generator, go to fresh air right away- do not delay! • Install home CO alarms that are battery-operated or have battery back-up. Test batteries frequently and replace when needed. Using Your Generator Outdoors • Place the generator away from windows, doors, and vents that could allow CO to come indoors. • To avoid electrocution, keep the generator dry. Do not use in rain or wet conditions. Operate the generator on a dry surface under an open canopy-like structure. Make sure your hands are dry before touching the generator. Use and Store Generator Fuel Safely • Turn the generator off and let it cool before refueling. Gasoline spilled on a hot engine could ignite. • Store generator fuel in an approved safety can outside of living areas in a locked shed or other protected area. Local laws may restrict use or storage of fuel. Ask your local fire department for information. • If you spill fuel or do not seal its container properly, invisible vapors can travel along the ground and be ignited by an appliance’s pilot light or arcs from electric switches in the appliance. • Use the type of fuel recommended in the generator instructions or on its label. Connect Your Generator Correctly • Plug appliances directly into the generator, or use a heavy-duty, outdoor-rated extension cord that is rated (in watts or amps) at least equal to the sum of the connected appliance load. • Never try to power house wiring by plugging the generator into a wall outlet, a practice known as “back feeding.” This can lead to the electrocution of utility workers or neighbors served by the same utility transformer. •The only safe way to connect a generator to house wiring is having a qualified electrician install a power transfer switch. The Safest Way to Get Emergency Power • Permanently installed stationary generators are the best way to provide home back-up power during a power outage. storm season is just around the corner!

SPRING HOME TRANSFORMATIONS I 2019
Create A Safe, Tick-Free Zone In Your Yard Despite their diminutive stature, ticks are a big concern for people, particularly those with pets. As the weather warms, ticks are out looking for a host to climb on and get a blood meal. Ticks are a significant concern because they can be infected with bacteria, viruses or parasites, says the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention. Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, and babesiosis are just a few of the many tickborne diseases. These pathogens can be passed to humans and pets via the bite of infected ticks.
lower 48 states, according to the CDC. In addition, researchers at Cornell University identified 26 species of ticks along the East Coast alone. Preventing tick bites has never been more important. The process starts right in one’s own backyard.
In 2018, at least one variety of diseasetransmitting tick had been found in all of the
According to Consumer Reports and the New York State Integrated Pest Management
Program, controlling wildlife that enters one’s yard can help keep tick numbers down. Open access means animals can enter and so can ticks. Fencing and pest management solutions may help. Other ideas include landscaping techniques that can reduce tick populations: • Remove leaf litter from the yard. • Clear tall grasses and brush around homes and at the edges of the lawn. Mow regularly to keep the lawn short.

• Create a barrier between wooded areas and the yard if it abuts a forested area. According to Consumer Reports, a three-footwide path of wood chips or gravel can prevent tick migration by creating a physical barrier that’s dry and sometimes too hot for ticks to tolerate. Such a barrier also serves as a visual reminder to anyone in your household to be especially careful if they step beyond the perimeter. • Bag grass clippings, which can serve as habitats for ticks. • Remove old furniture, trash and other debris that can give ticks places to hide. • Remember to use a tick-repellent product when venturing into wooded areas. Flea and tick products also are available for pets; consult with a vet. Ticks are problematic, but various measures can help control tick populations in a yard.

“GLIMPSES OF GRACE”
By Rev. Dan Minor - revdminor@att.net _____________________________________ “The Visionary Apostle” “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile” (John 1:47).
We have all known people like Nathanael. Head in the clouds, always content to live in a world of dreams and visions. He was in such a state of mind when Christ first noticed him sitting under a fig tree, a kind of private room in Palestine (John 1:48). Nathanael went from being a bigot (“Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”- John 1:46) to proclaiming Jesus as the Son of God (John 1:49). The point: Jesus changes lives! Speaking a language Nathanael would understand, Jesus talked about “Heaven opening up and angels ascending and descending around the Son of Man” (John 1:50, 51). Our vision is never higher than when we see our Lord high and lifted up.
The last time Nathanael is seen was during the postresurrection appearances of Jesus (John 21:2). In a strange kind of way, Nathanael helps us to understand the story of Palm Sunday from the backside. The story of Palm Sunday is a story of visions that clash as follows: Good Vision
Nathanael’s vision of God was “Son of God and King of Israel” (John 1:49). Jesus rode into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday as God and King in fulfillment to prophecy (Zechariah 9:9; Matthew 21:5). Is this our vision? Bad Vision
The priestly establishment in Jerusalem on Palm Sunday saw Jesus as a political symbol of an independent Palestine. The phrase “Kingdom of God” had become a slogan for Jewish nationalism. Thus, Jesus was on a collision course with history. God’s Vision
Palm Sunday was Jesus’ deliberate attempt to present Himself as God’s Messiah (King). On that special day, Jesus carried God’s vision of salvation to a broken world. As believers in Christ, we are committed to the same vision. At the end of the day, Jesus will still reign supreme! (Revelation 19:6, 7).
Francis Clinton DUNHAM
Ileta L. (Lober) MARSH
Francis Clinton Dunham passed away on April 4, 2019 while wintering in Surprise, Arizona. Fran was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on April 3, 1942, and lived in Allegan County his entire life. Fran was a 1960 graduate of Plainwell High School. He was a talented electrician and mechanic, and could fix nearly everything. He was also an avid outdoorsman, and spent many hours hunting, often with his good friend and cousin Leon Dimond. Fran put his numerous talents to use on the farm near Otsego, where he and his wife Sharon kept a large vegetable garden, as well as a number of horses, goats, pigs, chickens, an occasional steer, and a peacock named Oscar. He was a fan of car racing, and friends may remember him from the time he spent at Kalamazoo Speedway. After retiring from General Motors, Fran and Sharon enjoyed traveling, and they particularly enjoyed the southwest, where they spent many winters. Fran was preceded in death by his parents Vaughan and Elgie May (Burger) Dunham, by a daughter, Lauri Bradstreet, and by a sister, Jan Stevens. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sharon (Finch) Dunham; a son, Mark Dunham, of Kalamazoo; half-brother Gary Dunham, of Otsego; and two grandchildren, Chad Bradstreet, of Knoxville, Tennessee; and Alexandria Bradstreet, of Nashville, Tennessee; as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Cremation has taken place and there will be no service. Memorials in Fran’s name may be made to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Ileta Lucille (Myers) LoberMarsh passed away peacefully in her sleep, Monday, April 8, 2019 at Life Care Center in Plainwell. She was born January 22, 1926 in Hastings Hill, West Virginia, the daughter of George and Bonnie (Horner) Myers. Ileta grew up in Hastings Hill, Pine Grove and New Martinsville, West Virginia with her four sisters, Anita, Ethel, Leanore and Leah. She married Floyd W. Lober who passed away in 1969. She resided in Martin, at the Lober’s dairy farm, Otsego, MI, then Pine Lake and then back to Otsego. On June 26, 1971 she married Leroy Marsh who passed away in 2002. Ileta had worked at Otsego High School and at a nursing home in Plainwell. She was very active with the Otsego VFW Ladies Auxiliary for over 50 years and held all of the officer posts. She enjoyed being involved with TOPS for over 30 years and was a 4-H leader. Ileta was a devoted loving mother and was happiest when surrounded by family and friends. She had a very long, happy and productive life and lived by her favorite catch phrase “it is what it is.” Surviving are her children, Shirley (Charles) Lober-Rumpf, Floyd “Randy” (Mary) Lober and Leslie Lober; grandchildren, Scott and Michelle Fris and Wilhelm, Georg (Kelley) and Sigmund Rumpf and great-grandchildren, Ruth Ann Fris and Merinna and Marcus Keller. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands and daughter, Sandra Fris. A family service will take place. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Ileta may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice of Allegan. Messages of condolence may be posted at www.WinkelFuneralHome.com

This Cutie is Kent
ADOPTABLE PET OF THE WEEK!
Kent came into the shelter as a stray dog, skinny and timid. His health has improved and he is now a friendly guy! Kent is wiggly and sweet, he loves attention, and is eager to please. He knows how to sit when asked and would like to learn some more tricks. Kent is a perfect size, too - not too big and not too small. He is around 40-45 pounds and should not get any bigger. He is just under one year old, and has already spent two months of his young life at the shelter. Kent needs to be the only dog in the house at this time, but he would do fine with cats in the house. He also would love a home with kids to play with him. Come in and meet this cutie and see if he is the right dog for you. To learn more about Kent and the adoption process, please visit WishbonePetRescue.org or call 269-686-5112. If you are not able to adopt or foster a pet but want to help, donations are always appreciated. For information, please visit WishbonePetRescue.org/Give.
