Bob's Hardware has always been a prime component in downtown Otsego. Located at 125 West Allegan St. in the first block west of the main light, Bob's is well known for excellent service and a friendly, informed staff. It's a prime example of excellent hometown service and value that gives big chain stores a run for their money. Owner Bruce Meles has owned Bob's Hardware since 1989. His parents, Bob and Carol Meles, started Bob's Hardware back in 1952 and Bruce quickly became involved, working as early as age 7. Renovations have been in progress the past three months. The shelving has been rearranged, the cashier areas expanded and the merchandise refreshed and reorganized.

Specials and sales have been going on throughout this time, continuing through this open house. The interior and exterior improvements are being completed. The Ribbon Cutting event was a huge success with hundreds of customers stopping in to shop, take part in raffles, eat and celebrate with Bruce and his employees. Proceeds were given to three local charities, Christian Neighbors, St. Vincent de Paul and the Boy Scouts. Please come by the store and check out the new offerings and find answers to your home repair project questions. Bob's Hardware is open seven days a week: Mon.-Fri. 7:30am-7:00pm; Saturday 7:30am-6:00pm and Sunday 10:00am3:00pm or visit www.truevalue.com/bobs.

SPRING HOME & LAWN I 2017

How to make existing windows more energy efficient • Hang curtains. Curtains can help homeowners cut down on heating and cooling costs. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, properly hung draperies can reduce heat loss by as much as 25 percent. In the summer, curtains can block the hot rays from the sun from entering a home, reducing the need to turn up air conditioning units. While curtains won’t fix leaks or block hot or cold air from entering a home, they can serve as a buffer between a home’s inhabitants and the air seeping in through leaks.

Drafty windows make homes less comfortable by allowing cold air in during the winter and warm air in when temperatures rise. But comfort is not the only concern associated with leaky windows, as such fixtures also can have a negative impact on the environment. Leaky windows require heating and cooling systems to work harder to keep home interiors comfortable during times of the year when temperatures can be extreme. In the dead of winter, a leaky window will force a home’s inhabitants to turn up the thermostat, which only increases energy

consumption and energy bills. The same scenario plays out in summer, when leaky windows allow hot air in, leading homeowners to lower the temperature of air conditioning units so everyone inside is cool and comfortable. Thankfully, making windows more energy efficient does not necessarily require homeowners to replace existing windows. Before going that potentially expensive route, homeowners can consider the following strategies to improve the energy efficiency of their windows.

• Caulk or add weatherstripping. Small cracks and gaps around windows, which are most often found around windows in older buildings, might not seem like a big deal, but such breaches can lead to considerable energy loss. The DOE recommends using caulk to seal cracks that are less than 1⁄4-inch wide on the parts of the window that do not move (i.e., frames and where the trim meets the wall). Caulk might be less effective at fixing leaks larger than 1⁄4 inch in width. Employ weatherstripping to address leaks on movable parts of the window. Properly applied weatherstripping should adequately seal windows when they

are closed without making it difficult to open or close them later on. Weatherstripping is available in various materials, and homeowners can visit www.energy.gov/energysaver/weather stripping to find the material that’s most suitable for their situation. • Install windows films. Plastic window films are another option for homeowners looking to improve the energy efficiency of their windows. Heat shrink film can be cut to fit each individual leaky window in a home and then attached to windows using double-sided tape. A hair dryer can then be used to shrink the film and remove any wrinkles. Low-emissivity, or Low-E, coatings are a more expensive alternative to heat shrink film, and they can be equally effective at improving energy efficiency. Installation of Low-E coatings can be more difficult, as they do not provide as much leeway for mistakes during application as heat shrink film. Leaky windows are bad for homeowners’ energy bills and the environment. But homeowners have options other than full window replacements to fix leaks and improve efficiency.

Factors to consider when choosing carpeting Type of carpeting There are many different types of carpeting, some of which are best suited to certain situations. For example, plush and saxony carpets are better in low-traffic areas. These carpets may show footprints and also vacuum tracks and dirt, but they’re higher on the comfort spectrum than other types of carpet. Berber, which is more flat and dense, helps mask stains and tracks. It is durable in high-traffic areas. Textured carpets like frieze are cut from fibers of different heights, so they mask stains and are also softer on the feet than berber. Padding

W hen the time comes to choose flooring

for their homes, homeowners may be overwhelmed by the vast array of options at their disposal. The choice between carpet and hardwood flooring, laminate or tile is a matter of personal preference. People have long extolled the virtues of hardwood flooring, but carpeting can be just as stylish and provides a host of other benefits as well. Carpeting insulates rooms in the summer and winter, adding that extra level of protection against the elements. Carpeting also absorbs sound in a home. Many appreciate the warmth and cozy feeling of

MNS

carpet, especially when stepping out of bed. Carpeting also can increase the level of safety at home. According to the Carpet and Rug Institute, carpeting makes areas of play safer and may also reduce the severity of an injury in the event of a fall.

Padding can impact the way carpeting feels and how long it lasts. It isn’t always necessary to purchase the most expensive or thickest padding. However, it is wise to pick a pad that matches the type of carpeting you’re selecting and one that aligns with how you plan to use the room. You may be able to

go with a thinner pad in low-traffic rooms and beneath dense carpeting like berber. In high-traffic rooms, choose a thicker, more durable padding. Padding prevents carpet backing and fibers from coming apart over time. It pays to invest in a padding that will last as well. Installation Select a reliable carpet retailer and installer for your business. Competent installers will lay the carpeting in the correct manner so that it will look beautiful and maintain its durability for the life of the product. Shop around to find the right installer or even do the work yourself if you feel capable. Take time when shopping for carpeting, which is a substantial investment that can last for many years if the right material is chosen and installed correctly.

Today, there are many different types of carpeting available. Selecting the right carpeting for a room comes down to identifying the level of traffic in a particular room, the attributes homeowners would like the carpet to have and any other needs that fit with their lifestyles. The following guidelines can make carpet shopping a bit easier.

SPRING HOME & LAWN I 2017 without going overboard. Try an appliance or design fixture in a bright shade. Or paint the inside of the cabinets in your favorite color and install glass inserts in the cabinet doors so that everyone gets a peek of the color beyond. A neutral kitchen also can be brightened up with the use of silverware, dishes, pots and pans, and other kitchen items featured in bold hues.

Create drama with bold paint colors Painting is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to transform the look of a space. Paint colors can dramatically change the mood and the design of a home. And depending on a homeowner’s goals, paint can make a statement or blend into the background. Many people are now looking to bold colors to make spaces stand out. But choosing a paint color can be challenging. Homeowners looking to update walls and complement decor may want to look at some of the more impactful colors that Pantone indicates will be popular for the 2017

season. Primrose Yellow, Lapis Blue, Flame, Pink Yarrow, and Greenery are some of the more eye-catching selections. Once colors are selected, consider these guidelines for using bolder colors in room designs. • Decide how big an impact you want to make. Are you looking for color overload or just a small focal point of vivid color? Remember, using bold color doesn’t mean every wall must be lathered in that hue. Instead, select one wall to serve as an accent point and use that spot as your bold color display. Otherwise, rely on bold colors to dress up otherwise

• Stick to boldness on interchangeable items. Those who like to experiment with color may find that they like to switch out the colors now and again. Instead of having to repaint every few months, use decorative items in bright shades to make swapping out color that much easier. For example, replace area rugs, throw pillows and draperies. Paint over terra cotta flower pots when the mood strikes. mundane areas, such as the back wall of a cupboard or moldings and trim.

• Establish balance. Rely on neutral furniture, rugs, moldings and baseboards if you decide to take bold colors up a notch. This will help create a sense of balance in the room.

• Try bold in a small space. Many people are surprised at how well bold colors work in small spaces. Powder rooms can be an ideal spot to experiment with paint colors. Try deep colors that can make the area seem intimate and even exotic. Dark, bold hues can be toned down by different accents, such as neutral colored fixtures and towels.

Painting is a fun way to experiment with color. Many homeowners are not hesitant to use bold shades of color when they learn the right techniques. And because paint is an inexpensive option for making over a room, homeowners who find they do not like a particular color can easily paint over it with a new color.

• Go bold in the kitchen. Incorporate a splash of color in the kitchen

SPRING HOME & LAWN I 2017

Is it time to update your home’s electrical system? The invisible systems in a home often are taken for granted. When such systems are working as expected, daily life moves along smoothly. However, when a system goes awry, it can negatively impact routines and may create a dangerous home environment. This is especially true when something goes wrong with a home’s electrical system. Faulty wiring is a leading cause of residential fires. Many homeowners, particularly those who live in older homes, might be living in properties that have outdated electrical systems. The experts at Lowes ProServices state that having old wiring and/or insufficient amperage in a house can endanger residents. It also may damage appliances and make it difficult to sell a property in the future. It can be difficult to gauge exactly when to overhaul an electrical system. Unless circuits routinely trip or lights often dim, homeowners may put off the work. But degrading wires or overextended circuitry can pose a fire risk, so it is best to address electrical systems promptly. Home inspections may uncover electrical problems. Some homeowners may discover potential trouble while making renovations that require opening up walls or tearing them down, exposing the wires.

Still other homeowners learn about electrical systems when they’re adding new, large appliances or other gadgets that consume more power than existing items. These devices may continually cause power outages in the house, such as tripping the circuit breaker or popping a fuse. When it comes time to update the electrical system, it is always best to work with licensed and bonded electricians who have the expertise to work with electrical wiring without getting injured. This is not a do-it-yourself type of job since it requires specialized training. Electricians likely will recommend upgrading the electrical panel to bring more power from the utility poles into the home. This can include replacing the existing meter and circuit breaker box to allow it to handle more power or replacing items that are obsolete or dangerous. Many older homes are only capable of handling a minimum number of amps, utilizing just a few circuits. But nowadays, when homeowners have far more electronics in their homes than they once did, increased demand on electricity can overload a circuit (all of the outlets linked on one wire). Tripping a circuit breaker is

a safety measure to prevent the wire from becoming overheated and causing a fire. However, in some old systems, the circuit breaker will not trip, and this can be problematic. Rewiring a home is another step. Wire insulation can deteriorate over time, and new wires may be needed. This can be messy and time-consuming, but it’s a small price to pay for safety. When rewiring an electrician also may suggest new outlets. Many home building codes now

require outlets with ground fault interruptors, or GFIs, in kitchens, bathrooms and other rooms exposed to moisture. Some older homes may not even have three-pronged outlets, so this will necessitate an update as well. Electrical systems are the heart of a home, delivering power where it is needed. It is essential to keep such systems up-to-date so they can handle the power demands of everyday life.

Design a garden for all senses G

ardens add visual appeal to a yard, but gardens also can appeal to individuals’ senses of smell, taste, touch, and sound. Gardeners who want to create gardens that appeal to various senses can do so in the following ways.

of the more fragrant plants include gardenia, dianthus, calendula, lavender, and jasmine. Shrubs such as fragrant pineapple broom, Anne Russell viburnum and Christmas box can add fragrance as well.

SIGHT

SOUND

Aesthetic appeal is one of the most sought-after benefits of gardening. However, many homeowners put in so much effort planting for one particular season that they may not give thought to ensuring the garden looks vibrant no matter the time of year.

The lively sounds of the garden are created by the wildlife that come to pollinate and enjoy the environment gardeners have created. By choosing indigenous plants, gardeners can be sure that insects and small critters will seek refuge within the foliage. Songbirds also will add character to a yard. The Audubon Society suggests including a water source and a songbird border of shrubs along your property’s edge. Provide food sources and make sure they are located a fair distance from the main action of the yard so as not to scare off birds. Wait for musical chickadees, goldfinches, orioles, and cardinals to arrive and enjoy the accommodations.

Gardeners can research planting zones to find plants that will blossom at different times of the year so they can enjoy impressive, aesthetically appealing gardens year-round. Spring bulbs can bloom early on, while annual and perennial summer favorites will thrive under the summer sun. Beautyberry and caryopteris will fill out in the autumn, while holly or mahonia can look lovely in the winter.

SMELL Gardeners can dot their landscapes with aromatic trees, shrubs and flowers that will make stepping out into the garden that much more special. Some

TASTE Gardeners can expand their gardens to include fruit-bearing trees and rows of vegetables. Produce can be harvested from early spring through late fall depending on the crops planted.

TOUCH Apart from including trees and shrubs of various textures in the garden, look for other ways to stimulate a tactile response. Water features add relaxing sound and beauty. Stones, moss, mulch, and other accents have varied textures that can stimulate the sense of

touch in various ways. Don’t forget to include a sitting area so that you can immerse yourself fully in the garden. Go beyond visual appeal when designing a garden. When gardeners tap into all five senses, they can enjoy their landscapes even more than they already do.

Thousands of people try their hands at do-it-yourself home improvement projects every year. Whether working indoors or outdoors, wearing safety gear and exercising caution is a necessity when undertaking any home remodeling project. According to the Home Safety Council, one in five consumers will need medical attention this year as a result of home improvement projects. A 2013 survey by 3M TEKK Protection and the National Safety Council found that more than one-quarter of DIY home improvement projects ended with injuries to homeowners or someone else in the household. Falls from ladders, cuts from power tools and injuries from thrown debris account for many emergency room visits. Accidents involving chemicals and cleaning agents also can occur. Safety should be the utmost priority when renovating, and that means utilizing appropriate safety equipment.

Footwear Wear solid shoes that provide considerable traction during home improvements. A firm, reinforced toe is helpful as well. Should any items fall, they’ll be less likely to cause injury if your foot is encased in a protective boot or sturdy shoe. Soles that grip surfaces will help safeguard against slips and falls.

When working at home, make sure to use tools in the manner in which they were designed. Keep power cords tidy so they do not pose a tripping hazard. Falls from ladders often occur when climbing above the recommended rung or engaging in risky behavior while on the ladder, such as reaching or hanging over too far.

SPRING HOME & LAWN I 2017

The benefits of hiring professional contractors Experience

The DIY movement has inspired many homeowners to tackle home repair and remodeling projects on their own. DIY projects can be rewarding, and many homeowners who have embraced the DIY movement have discovered talents they never before knew they had.

But no matter how simple popular home renovation television shows make remodeling projects appear, homeowners should know that such undertakings are far more difficult than they appear on television. Homeowners who overestimate their abilities and the time they have to complete projects can cost themselves substantial amounts of money. In fact, there are a variety of reasons homeowners might want to work with professional contractors when tackling home improvement projects.

A trial and error approach can work with various projects and problems. But applying such an approach to home improvement projects is risky and potentially dangerous, not to mention costly. Experienced professional contractors with strong track records (seek recommendations from friends or neighbors) won’t have to go through trial and error and are therefore more likely than DIYers to complete a project on time and on budget.

necessarily true of home improvement projects. Labor costs typically account for a substantial amount of professionally contracted projects, but homeowners can cut those costs by volunteering to do some of the simpler tasks themselves. In addition, contractors often purchase materials at a much lower cost than individual homeowners because contractors buy in bulk. So while labor costs might be lower on DIY projects, the cost of materials can offset those savings.

Inspiration

Resale value

One oft-overlooked benefit of working with professional contractors is the likelihood that they can draw up ideas for projects that homeowners might otherwise never have thought up on their own. Homeowners without specific ideas in mind can ask contractors to come up with various scenarios before committing to a particular one. Veteran contractors can draw on years of experience to create designs that DIYers might be incapable of coming up with and/or incapable of seeing through to completion.

Many homeowners renovate their homes with eyes on improving the resale value of those homes. But if homeowners want to showcase a newly remodeled kitchen when selling their homes, they should be prepared for prospective buyers to ask who worked on the project. Fearing potential problems down the road, some buyers might be put off by homes that were remodeled by DIYers and not professional contractors. Renovating a home on your own can be a rewarding project for homeowners. But it’s important that homeowners recognize the many benefits of working with professional contractors before making any final decisions with regard to who will tackle their next project.

Cost Conventional wisdom suggests it’s less expensive to do something yourself than to hire someone else to do it for you, but that’s not

Helpful and harmful insects their gardens, homeowners might be tempted to eradicate any bug that moves in their yards. But gardeners would be wise to first learn which insects are hurting their gardens and which can actually help gardens in the long run.

Caterpillars: Many caterpillars, the precursor to adult moths, will feed constantly on leaves, stems and other parts of plants. The tobacco hornworm moth caterpillar can damage potato and tomato plants.

Harmful

Helpful

Certain insects can be dangerous to animals and plants. The following are a handful of insects that can threaten the vitality of gardens.

Plants depend on insects to transfer pollen as they forage, and many insects are quite beneficial to have around. While some pollinate, others are predators of other pests.

Aphids: These insects suck on the juice needed to sustain plants, particularly when they congregate. Bald-faced hornet: Hornets tend to be an aggressive species that can sting repeatedly. Should you find a nest near an entertaining space or garden, it can cause trouble. Carpenter ants: These ants will burrow into wood causing damage. They may compromise any wooden structure in and around a home. Locusts: Various species of locust can damage plants and crops due to their voracious appetites. Treehoppers: These small, green insects mimic the look of leaves, and their appetites can affect crops and gardens.

Although it’s virtually impossible to count them, insects are the most diverse group of organisms on the planet. Nine hundred thousand different kinds of insects are known to exist. At any given time, it is estimated that there are around 10 quintillion individual insects living.

Red pavement ant: As they feed on all manner of human food, these ants can quickly overtake areas with their staggering numbers and deliver painful bites. Grasshoppers: Certain grasshoppers, like the redlegged grasshopper, can decimate food crops and transfer parasites to birds when eaten as prey.

Gardeners grow frustrated when seeing their gardens infested with insects. In an effort to restore

SPRING HOME & LAWN I 2017

Addressing spring ant problems The return of warm weather in the spring often marks the return of animals and insects as well. The spring season is a popular time for insects to mate and build nests. This also may be a time when homeowners see ant “swarms” in or around their homes. Ants and termites are social creatures, and when their colonies become too large, flying ants will spread out in search of new territories and to establish new queens. This mobility may also be coupled with an increasing number of ants marching on the ground and scaling walls. Although many species of ants are harmless, homeowners do not want to see ants inside their homes — especially in large numbers. The following strategies can help homeowners address ant infestations this spring. • Identify the type of ant around your property. Consult with online guides or books to identify the species of ant on your property. Knowing which

species of ant is in or around your home can help you address the problem more effectively. • Create a food trap. Ants are attracted to various food sources, such as fats, sweets and proteins. Mixing a very small amount of a food with boric acid can help control ant populations. Ants will bring tainted food back to their colonies and perish. • Keep a clean house. Use vinegar, soap and water to clean areas where ants are seen. Many leave a scent trail of pheromones to tell others where to go for a food source. • Treat carpenter ants at the source. Carpenter ants will not bring back food to the nest. Instead, sprinkle diatomaceous earth, or DE, around outdoor nests to eradicate colonies. • Work with an exterminator. If home remedies do not work, consult with a trained exterminator.

Protect yourself from Power Loss before Storm Season By Brian Steensma, Steensma Lawn and Power Equipment

pring is the perfect time to protect yourself and your family from potential power outages as we approach the summer storm season. We all know the feeling of inconvenience, stress, even panic that is caused by power outages.

They can be extremely costly, even dangerous, as you risk food spoiling, basements flooding, and most importantly family members put at risk who depend on power for the functioning of their medical devices.

Let’s face it, our lives have become more and more dependent on reliable electric power. Our expectation of this is undermined repeatedly as violent storms, grid failures, and other service interruptions reveal the vulnerabilities of our overtaxed utility service. Fortunately, there is way to eliminate all this uncertainty, hassle, and stress: an Automatic Standby Generator. So, why consider one of these automatic standby generators instead of a portable kind where you just wheel it out, start it yourself, and plug it in when the power goes out? Great Question!

the sale. A simple on site evaluation can get you professional recommendations on generator size and placement as well as a complete installed

price. The total will likely be less than you think and well worth the peace of mind. Don’t wait too long, storm season is just around the corner!

When storms and high winds take away your power...

TAKE IT BACK!

#1 - No more fueling every few hours

Automatic Standby Generators don’t need to be filled since they run off your existing natural gas or propane supply. That means no more terrifying runs through a horrible storm to the gas station or worrying about whether you will have enough fuel to make it through the storm. No more pulling the rope and hoping your generator starts, no more praying your gasoline isn’t too old, no more stress…just peace of mind. #2 - Automatic Generators start…..well…..Automatically Automatic Standby Generators are permanently installed to your house, kind of like an air conditioner. Your automatic standby generator is on constant alert, monitoring the power supply to your house. If the power goes out, the generator know immediately and will turn itself on and supply power to house, whether you are home or not! So no more worrying if you are out of town, on vacation, or down south for the winter. Your home is protected no matter what. No spoiled food, no freezing pipes, no worries.

Also, you know how it seems that a lot of times when the power goes out, the weather is really horrible? Kind of comes with the territory doesn’t it? Well, with an automatic generator you don’t even have to get out of your arm chair. No more running through a rainstorm dragging a heavy generator from the barn, no more windows cracked in an ice storm so you can sneak extension cords through, and no more worries about blowing fuses or over loading your generator! #3 - Automatic Standby Generators can be incredibly affordable!

Gone are the days where you had to spend ten thousand dollars to protect your house. The pricing on these units has dropped substantially with some units, like the Generac 7kw PowerPact starting at under $2000. The electrical and mechanical installation should be done by a professional company, preferably with service and support after

SPRING HOME & LAWN I 2017

Recognize safety hazards during yard work Attention, all green thumbs, and the bodies attached to them: It's nearly time to get down and dirty in the garden. Whether you're transforming your backyard into an award winner or just trimming the lawn, the CSA Group, a leading certification and testing organization, asks that you remember the following safety tips: Yard Work • Always ensure that products such as electric lawnmowers, barbecues, power tools, ladders, decorative lights, extension cords and safety apparel carry the mark of a recognized certification organization, such as CSA Group. • Read the manufacturer's operating instructions and use products only as intended.

• Wear protective eye and footwear (on eyes and feet, respectively). • What's that you say? Wear hearing protection when operating loud machinery, vehicles or tools. Power Lawnmowers • Know your mower and always follow the manufacturer's instructions. • Look for these safety features: a rear guard to protect your hands and feet from rotating blades; a "deadman" control that stops the mower when you release the handle; and an "up-stop" feature to prevent the handle from kicking up when the mower hits an obstacle. • Clear the lawn of sticks, stones, wire, toys and other objects (including that screwdriver you lost in the grass last summer), as they could get caught in the machine or flung by the blades. • Wear clothing that provides some protection, including long pants, a shirt with sleeves and firmly-tied shoes with

non-slip soles and hard toes. • Never cut the grass when it's damp or wet, or when there is rain or lightning. Wet conditions greatly increase the risk that you will slip, suffer electric shock or clog the mower. • Always mow in daylight, never at twilight or in the dark. Keep your eyes on the lawn and look ahead (at least three feet) for debris. • Shut off, unplug and engage your mower's safety devices before removing clogged grass clippings. • Shut off the mower immediately if you hit an object. Check for damage and do not restart it unless you're sure it's safe to do so. • As suggested by its name, always push rather than pull a push mower. • All extension cords should be untangled, in good repair, have a three-prong plug rated for outdoor use and be of the recommended gauge for the load. For more information on CSA Group visit www.csagroup.org.

Recently, a group from our church travelled to Williamstown, KY to see Ark Encounter. Sponsored by an organization called Answers in Genesis, Ark Encounter is a full-size reconstruction of the biblical ark, corresponding to Genesis 6:15’s measurements. Using a cubit of 20.4 inches, AIG built the ark to the dimensions of 51 ft high, 85 ft wide, and 510 ft long. It is truly an amazing sight! A misconception about Noah’s Ark is that there were just 2 representatives of each animal type on the ark, with one being a male and the other being a female. Instead, Genesis 7:2 tells us that God required Noah to take “seven pairs of every kind of clean animal”. Since this was to be “a male and its mate”, there were probably 14 of each clean animal on the ark. Clean animals included cattle and sheep as well as chickens and turkeys. Why so many clean animals? One important reason was worship. In Genesis 8:20, Noah exited the ark and built an altar, sacrificing some of the clean animals in worship. Although the old world was gone, worship of God was to remain constant in the new one. Like Noah, let’s continue to worship the Lord in our rapidly changing world. Worship deepens our relationship with God and keeps us grounded in godly values. Through worship, we invigorate one another. Hebrews 10:25 tells us, “…let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together…but encouraging one another…”. Easter, or Resurrection Sunday, is a great time to begin regular worship with a faith family by celebrating the resurrection of Christ! You are welcome to worship with us at First Congregational Church. I hope to see you there!

“BECAUSE HE LIVES” By Rev. Dan Minor - revdminor@att.net _____________________________________

“But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep” (I Corinthians 15:20)

The one truth that separates Christianity from all other world religions is the resurrection of Jesus Christ from death. No other religious founder can make that claim. No one has ever been able to disprove His resurrection. The Bible treats the resurrection as absolute truth. “But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead …” is the message we joyously proclaim to the world on Easter Sunday. Just as the first fruits was a sign of the coming harvest (Leviticus 23:l0, 11), the Resurrection of Jesus Christ is a sign for the resurrection of all believers in the time to come (I Corinthians l5:3556). The pattern of His own glorious resurrected body will be the pattern of ours. Because He lives … • Our preaching is not in vain. • Our faith is not in vain. • Our sins are forgiven. • Our witness is valid.

Jesus said, “Because I live, you shall live also” (John l4:l9). One day we will be clothed with immortality and death will be no more (I Corinthians l5:53-55). What a glorious day when we shall see Him face to face and be united with our loved ones who have gone before us. “Eye has not seen nor ear heard, neither has it entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for them that love Him” (I Corinthians 2:9). The resurrection of Jesus Christ is not too good to be true. It is too good NOT to be true!

Prayer: Dear living Christ, because you live we are filled with hope and promise. Amen.

Sally Mary Helen JENNINGS KALAMAZOO, MI

Sally Mary Helen Jennings, known to many country music fans as Sally Massey, of Kalamazoo, formerly of Otsego, passed away on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 in the presence of family. She preferred to be called Mary, was born in Bono, Ohio to the late Peter (Messersi) and Sarah (Selvetti Cameruci) Massey who came separately to the United States from Ancona, Italy, when each was a teenager. They first married others and later after divorcing, met and married each other. Mary was one of five children and the last to pass away. Preceding her in death were: Half-Brother Merico Cameruci, half-sister Evelyn (Cameruci) Hochmuth, brother Carl Massey and sister Alice Massey Winter. When Mary was 18, she married Gilbert Leonard Rounds Jennings who preceded her in death in January 2005. They divorced in 1964 but became friends later in life. Together they had three children who survive: Soni (Jim) Mackin of Monroe, MI; Gary (Linda) Jennings of Kalamazoo; and Jacque Jennings-Carter (Scott) of Portage, MI. Six grandchildren, Kim (Tom) Clancy, Richland, MI; Marie (Eric) Kuehnlein, Monroe, MI; Troy (Jody) Jennings, Galesburg, MI; Jim (Leeann) Mackin III, Carleton, MI; Kyle Jennings, Nashville, TN; and Ashley Carter (Jake) Youngblood, Portage, MI. Eleven great grandchildren. Mary attended school through the 8th grade, then worked full time for many years on her family’s onion farm. From an early age, Mary was interested in singing and country music. She and her sister, Alice, formed a country-singing duo when they were teenagers and sang for many local events. Together they won many singing competitions and ultimately qualified for a talent show sponsored by WLS in Chicago. The sister duo eventually ended but Mary continued her singing and learned to play the guitar from her older brother Carl (Massey). That was the beginning of what would become a career of travel, recording, radio and TV appearances, singing and songwriting. Throughout her singing career, Mary raised three children and held various jobs at which she was also extremely successful. She was a top radio sales person working for a few different radio stations over the years and had two radio shows on WBCK for several years. She was also a regular on WKZO-TV’s Channel 3 Clubhouse. She was a DJ for another local station and was named Miss DJ USA and traveled to Nashville, TN to receive her award. As part of that trip, she visited and performed at The Grand Ole Opry. She also performed many times at Buck Lake Ranch in Angola, IN. She loved performing for the veterans at the local VA and did that regularly. Mary loved her music and had the opportunity to expand her career but it would require a lot of travel and being away from home often. In order to build a significant career beyond the region, it required a lot of travel. As much as she loved her music, she loved her children more and opted to just stay local and regional with her music. She was an avid volunteer as a Cub Scout Leader, Brownie and Girl Scout Leader and very active in her church activities. Mary loved singing country western music and became an accomplished country western singer and guitar player locally and regionally with some national recognition all the while raising her three children. She was a member of The Bunkhouse Gang, The Rhythm Pals and was a regular on the very popular weekly Green Valley Jamboree with Rem Wall and The Green Valley Boys which aired on WKZO-TV for 36 years. Mary wrote and recorded the music for about a dozen country music records on various music labels over several years and continued both her country music and “mom” careers until all three children had left home. After her last child had left home, she moved from Otsego to Kalamazoo and began her career as an employment placement counselor; she was employed by two different agencies and was a top producer at each. Her focus on country music diminished as she began a new chapter in her life. Her commitment to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, became deeper and deeper creating a desire to travel to the Holy Land. She saved money for many years and finally had her dream of visiting the Holy Land come true. She had never traveled out of the country prior to that trip. It was one of the major highlights of her life. It was during her trip to the Holy Land that she was inspired to write 12 Biblical songs devoted to Jesus Christ which she later recorded. Her love for Jesus Christ opened the door for her Biblical music ministry which she named Ministry with Music. Her devotion and love for Jesus Christ never faltered even in the most difficult times of her life and she loved sharing her love for Him with family, friends and everyone she met. Mary’s family is thankful for, and appreciates, the support and loving words that have been received from friends. The family wishes to share its deep gratitude to Hospice of Southwest Michigan for their loving assistance, support and comfort; and to the many people at Heritage Community of Kalamazoo who have loved and cared for Mary. In accordance with Mary’s wishes, there will be no visitation. A private burial service for immediate family will be held in Hillside Cemetery, in Plainwell, MI. If friends of the family would like to honor Mary, a contribution may be made to Hospice of Southwest Michigan in the name of Sally Mary Helen Jennings.
