“Love is patient and kind…” – I Corinthians 13:4

Whatever happened to common decency? There is no need to take up space in this article by listing examples because indecency is all around us. The question is, how can we re-kindle kindness? 1. The Example of Jesus.

It is well documented, from the New Testament, that Jesus was rejected, ridiculed, put down, spat upon, scourged and finally put to death on a cross for our sins. Yet, He showed kindness to everyone. He showed kindness to women and children, a despised tax collector, the proud, the lost, the sick, the lame, the poor, the hungry and many more. He offered forgiveness to His executioners. He left us an example that we may follow in His steps (I Peter 2:21). 2. The Example of Others.

Most of us were blessed to learn kindness at home. If our parents showed kindness, then we tend to show kindness. Some of the manners and common courtesies I learned as a child may be summed up in such words as: love … share … help … listen …respect and flush. Wash your hands before coming to the dinner table … Chew with your mouth closed … Don’t smack your lips when you eat … Don’t interrupt while others are talking … open the door for ladies … say please and thank you. We practice kindness to others because someone showed kindness to us (parent, pastor, coach, teacher, friend, etc.). The movement in our country called “Random Acts of Kindness” is another illustration.

Myrabel A. “Myra” PARMELEE AGE 89 – OTSEGO, MI

Myrabel Anne Parmelee entered her heavenly home on April 7, 2016. Myra was born December 30, 1926, the daughter of the late Charles Raymond and Golda Newman from Otsego. She had retired from the former James River Corp. in 1987 where she served for 23 years in Traffic and Sales. Myra was a member of First Baptist Church in Otsego as well as a lifetime member of the Ladies VFW Auxiliary. A graduate of Otsego High School, she met and married Bernard (Bernie) Parmelee in May, 1946 who preceded her in death in 1992. Also preceding her in death were 5 sisters Winona, Louise, Idalaine, Iva, Lois and a brother Carl. Myra loved to sing and dance, smile, and share a laugh with those around her. She enjoyed bowling, arts and crafts, and knitted and supplied many pairs of baby slippers to the Alternatives Pregnancy Care Center in Kalamazoo. Surviving is her daughter Sherry and son-in-law Raymond Bradshaw of Plainwell and her grandson Ray Jr. Also surviving is her brother Lewis Newman of Arizona, several cousins, nieces, and nephews. A funeral service was held on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at the First Baptist Church of Otsego. Pastor Merlyn Jones officiated. Burial was at Hillside Cemetery. Jeannette Irene Miller HAGENBUCH AGE 91 – PLAINWELL, MI

Shirley J. MCDONALD AGE 87 – OTSEGO, MI

Shirley passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family Monday, April 11, 2016 at her home. She was born June 6, 1928 in Otsego and was a lifelong resident of the area. Shirley had worked in the cafeteria at Otsego Public Schools for almost 20 years and was a member of the Otsego Lady Elks. On July 13, 1946 she married Renny J. McDonald. Shirley loved taking care of her family. Surviving are her daughters, Nancy Louise (Norman) Starr of Otsego, Marcia Lynn (Timothy) Quigley of Plainwell, Linda Kay (Steve) Leafdale of Otsego and Kathy Ann (Craig) Nelson also of Otsego; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Freida (Simonton) Smith; husband, Renny; grandson, Paul Quigley in 1994 and by her sister, Arlene Kramer. A Funeral service was held Thursday, April 14, 2016 with Pastor Joe Shaler and grandson, Trevor Wolthuis officiating. Burial followed at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego Township. Jeannette Irene Miller Hagenbuch was born in Flushing, Michigan at her family's home on River Road on March 29, 1924. She was the sixth of seven children of William Harry and Estella Rena DeVoe Miller. A blind date set up by a good friend on New Year’s Eve resulted in a sixty-two year marriage with Charles Raymond Hagenbuch, Jr. She believed in and lived a life of looking for the best in those she knew and met and in helping others. Jeannette and Ray had two children: Paula Jean and Ronald Gar. Because of Ron's handicap, Jeannette became active in forming the Genesee County Association of Retarded Children, serving as treasurer and bus driver for twenty years. She was a charter member of the Flushing Presbyterian Church, liked to knit and sew and for many years she gifted her talents to the Shriner's cause of aiding crippled and burned children. She was a co-leader of Girl Scout Troop 468 from Brownies to Senior Scouting and a member of the Flushing VFW Auxiliary. Her son, Ron, and her husband, Ray, preceded her in death. Surviving are her: daughter, Paula Hagenbuch Fenstermaker; grandchildren, Hagen Fenstermaker, Eric (Elizabeth) Fenstermaker, and Adra Fenstermaker; great-grandchildren, Elijah, Ezekiel and Elliana Fenstermaker; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at the Plainwell First Presbyterian Church, Plainwell, Michigan on May 1st at 1:00pm.
