I recently passed a milestone of sorts – my seventieth year. I don’t feel any different than I did a decade ago. I am thankful for the grace of God, good health, a loving family and a wide circle of friends. Jolene and I feel blessed to have these retirement years together. When I was very young, seventy seemed very old. That is not the case today. When President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law (August 14, l935), it was believed that few people would live beyond the age of sixty-five. In the year of my birth (l945) the life expectancy was 65.9 years. When I was a junior in High School, President John F. Kennedy established The President’s Council on Physical Fitness. It became common place to see people out walking, jogging or riding their bikes. Along with the emphasis on physical fitness came advances in medical science. People are living longer. My mother will be 98 in a couple of weeks and is still living comfortably. A leading gerontologist in our nation suggests that being seventy may be the new fifty. It is comforting to know age is only a number. Examples: • Thomas Edison created the electric-light bulb in his middle sixties. • Longfellow wrote some of his finest poems after he was seventy years old. • Michelangelo was still producing masterpieces in his late eighties. • Dr. Albert Schweitzer (noted theologian, organist, philosopher and medical missionary) was still going strong past his ninetieth birthday • President George H.W. Bush made another parachute jump on his ninetieth birthday! In the Christian life, it’s not about the number of years we live but how well we live the years that are given to us. Prayer: Dear Lord may all my years be a gift of love and service to You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

DuWayne passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at Tendercare of Westwood in Kalamazoo. He was born November 13, 1946 in Plainwell, the son of Dorsey and Winonna (Pratt) Warner. DuWayne served his country in the US Army and had worked at GM. He enjoyed making jewelry using gemstones and rocks, hunting, fishing, camping, being outside and had spent many weekends fishing and camping on the river. DuWayne was a longtime member of AA and had sponsored many individuals over the years. Surviving is his son Eric (Andrea) Warner of Iowa; granddaughter, Alison and his brother, Dorsey Dale Warner Jr. He was preceded in death by his parents. Friends may meet with DuWayne’s family starting at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, April 18, 2015 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego until the time of the Funeral Service at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Kathy Brown of the Plainwell First United Methodist Church officiating. Cremation will follow and burial of ashes will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, with Military Honors at a later time. God saw Robert getting tired and a cure was not to be. So he put his arms around him and whispered "Come with me". On March 25, 2015, we lost Robert Paradine. We would like to thank everyone for the love, prayers, flowers, kindness and food. A very special thank you to Pastor Olson, EMTs, patrolman Jay Gibson, medical examiner Paul Smith & Winkel Funeral Home for all their help that morning.

With tearful eyes I watched him suffer and saw him fade away. Although we loved him dearly, we could not make him stay. A golden heart stopped beating. Hard working hands to rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us he only takes the best.

Chad MacIntosh, CRT, RRT, passed away April 11, 2015. He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Lionel and Jean Barrett and his best friend Kristofor Lorback. Chad will be lovingly remembered by his wife Kim MacIntosh; his children: Keegan and Emmarie; his parents: Scott and Suzanne MacIntosh; his twin brother Andrew (Tiffany) MacIntosh and his brother Cameron MacIntosh and fiancée Andrea Longstreet; his grandmother Ruth MacIntosh and grandmother-in-law Dolores Herbig; his parents-in-law: David and Rose Adamski; his brother-in-law David Adamski; his niece Elliette, cousins, aunts, uncles, friends and Chad and Kim's boxer girl Brenna who was our first baby. Chad was her most favorite person ever and he adored and loved her so. Chad graduated from Wayland Union High School in 1997 and attended Ferris State University. For many years he had worked as a die maker. The last two years he worked as a Licensed Respiratory Therapist at Metro Health and loved going to work to save people's lives. Music was a passion to him, singing, playing, dancing, he loved it all. He was an avid Redwings fan and enjoyed hockey. Above all, Chad loved to spend time with his family and cherished every moment with his children. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 17, 2015 at 11 AM at Wayland United Methodist Church, with Deacon Larry Hoogeboom presiding. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery. Archie passed away Wednesday, April 8, 2015 in Kalamazoo. Archie was born November 26, 1940 in Otsego Township to George and Mildred (Stratton) Smith. A 1960 graduate of Plainwell High School he was employed for 40 years with James River. In his leisure time he enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, cooking, yard work, gardening and his dogs. He was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed watching his kids’ and grandkids’ events and had coached their Little League teams. Archie was a member of the First Congregational Church of Otsego. On May 6, 1961 in Otsego he married Karen Shipley, who survives. Also surviving are his sons, Rick (Kim) Smith of Orangeville, Randy (April) Smith and Gary Smith, both of Plainwell; seven grandchildren, Sydney, Taylor, Jay, Mekala, Jordan, Gabrielle and Connor; a great-grandson, Aubrey. Barbara A. KNOWLTON AGE 70 – OTSEGO, MI

Barbara went to be with her Lord, March 27, 2015. She was born May 21, 1944 in Plainwell, Michigan to David R. and Mary E. (Sage) Knowlton. The great joy of her life was her family and friends. Surviving are her brother, David W. (Susan) Knowlton of Bridgman, MI; 3 nephews, Jeffrey (Amy) Knowlton of Bridgman, Brian (Patty) Knowlton of Sawyer, MI and Jason (Danael) Knowlton of Buchanan, MI; 4 great nephews, Matthew, Nicholas, Noah and Rylen; 3 great nieces, Mackenzie, Baylee and Emilie and by several cousins. Barbara was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Etta Knowlton in 2006; her father, David Ralph Knowlton in 1947 and by an infant sister, Betty Jean Knowlton in 1947. Barbara was a member of the Otsego Church of God and was a longtime resident of Otsego and most recently Alamo Nursing Home. Burial has taken place at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego, MI. A memorial service for Barbara will be held at a later date. Contributions in memory of Barbara may be made to Reverence Home Health & Hospice of Kalamazoo. AGE 79 – KALAMAZOO, MI Shirley passed away Wednesday, April, 15, 2015 at Alamo Nursing Home. She was born June 27, 1935 in South Bend, IN the daughter of Alfred and Evelyn Wojciechowski. For many years Shirley taught piano and singing lessons and was a vocalist at many community musicals. She attended and enjoyed singing at the Assembly of God Church in Plainwell. Shirley also enjoyed sewing, knitting, desserts, and lattes and had also had her private pilot license. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family. On August 30, 1950 in Salisbury, MD she married Phillip Bowe who passed away in 2008. Surviving are her children, David Bowe of Holland and Sharon Cremeans of Parchment; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Irvin Bouch; her husband; son, Timothy; and by brothers, Donald and Cliff. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at 11:00A.M. at the Assembly of God Church in Plainwell with Pastor Dave Alderman officiating. Burial will take place at a later date.
