Dyngus Day Dinner

COMMUNITY SHOPPERS GUIDE...OTSEGO, MI 49078...April 19, 2014...Phone 694-9431

DINNER INCLUDES: Perogies (Potatoes/Kraut), Kolampki

(Cabbage Rolls), Kapusta (Sauerkraut), Kielbasa (Polish Sausage), Potatoes & Bread. Includes Dessert.

DYNGUS DAY The Monday after Easter is considered a holiday in Poland. Dyngus Day was started as a way to provide merriment after the seriousness of Lent comes to an end.

Monday, April 21st

from 11:30am-7pm

HOMEMADE

POLISH FOOD

Dyngus Day is traditionally the day boys tried to catch the attention of girls by throwing water on them or hitting their legs with twigs or pussy willows. Tuesday is the day of revenge for the ladies throwing crockery and dishes at the boys. Dyngus Day is a commemoration of the birth of Christianity in Poland (966 AD) in which Holy Baptism was administered on Easter Monday, uniting all Poland under the banner of Christianity.

How to Create a Garden with Limited Space What do you think of when someone asks if you’re going to plant a garden? Do you imagine a thriving backyard space full of dozens of different types of plants? Do you think of a huge front yard display full of brilliant colors? Unfortunately, not all of us have the space for a large garden. The good news is that even those who think they have no room at all usually have space for something — whether it’s a smaller plot or even a container. PLANNING FOR YOUR GARDEN Be creative when you think of your garden and the space you have in which to plant it. Gardens have been successfully grown in very small patches of land or in pots placed outside of an entranceway. The size of your garden is not nearly as important as the way you treat their plants so that they can grow and thrive. Start by doing a little bit of research. Not all plants grow well in every geographic location, and the time of year you can start planting without danger of frost varies depending on where you are located as well. If you want to plant multiple types of plants, you’ll need to determine which can be grown together or near each other and which need to be separated. Do the plants you want to grow need specific amounts of sunlight? Take everything into consideration. Once you know what plants are most appropriate, determine where

you’ll place your garden. Will you be using a small patch of land outside a rented house or apartment? Will you be using window boxes or planters? Different types of plants need to be started at different times of the year, so make sure you have a timeline mapped out as well. PURCHASING SEEDS & MATERIALS Now that you’ve done some research you can purchase the seeds or seedlings you need to start your garden. If you are using planters, make sure they are large enough for your plants to grow without overcrowding each other. They’ll need space to grow, both above and below the soil. Don’t skimp on potting soil. A highquality potting soil will give your plants the nutrients they need to survive and thrive. There are dozens of different soil alternatives to choose from, so you may want to ask an expert at your local garden center which type will be best for the types of plants you’re working with.

small animals — not to mention your plants. If you must use them, do so sparingly. Bugs aren’t the only problem your

garden will face. Weeds can also choke out your plants, causing them difficulty in terms of growth. Take some time to aerate your garden’s soil and pull the weeds as often as you can. Even potted plants can end up with weeds. Don’t let the fact that you don’t have a lot of space prevent you from having a garden. It doesn’t matter if you live in a mansion or in a third-floor apartment. If you have space for a pot and time to give your plants some attention and care, you can definitely grow thriving plants. Make a plan and make the most of the space you’ve been given. You’ll be glad you gave small space gardening a shot.

DEALING WITH PESTS AND WEEDS Even the smallest gardens can end up with pest problems. Bugs love to feed on plants, but you can control them by mixing in some plants that have naturally repellant scents — like marigolds. Other plants are inviting to spiders and ladybugs, “good” bugs that can help to keep the “bad” bugs away. Some soils have fertilizers and insect repellants mixed in. Do your best to avoid chemical pesticides as they can be harmful to children and

Hummingbirds will be regular visitors to your garden if you provide them with food. Brightly colored, nectar filled flowers are a favorite of hummingbirds and are available in nearly all growing regions. Adding hummingbird feeders is also an option that will attract these tiny birds to your garden.

Attracting Hummingbirds

Make Your Garden A Haven For These Cute Visitors NATURAL FOOD Hummingbirds feed on flower nectar, as do many insects. With so much competition for food, it makes sense that hummingbirds would favor flowers most suited to meet their unique needs. Their long bills fit into the tube shaped flowers that bees and other insects would find difficult to enter. Hummingbirds don’t require a landing pad from which to perch while taking nectar, but they do need room for their fast beating wings. There are over 150 plant varieties in North America that meet the needs of hummingbirds. Hummingbirds are attracted to brightly colored flowers, especially red ones. Bees have difficulty seeing the color red and generally choose flowers by scent. Hummingbirds don’t rely on scent, having good color recognition. Choosing less fragrant, red flowers allows hummingbirds to have a better chance of finding nectar overlooked by their food competitors, the bees. Many plants meet their requirements.

Garden plants vary according to regional climate differences, but some hummingbird favorites are widely available with different species suitable to different regions. Visit a local nursery and look for plants with brightly colored, tube-shaped flowers. Plants attractive to hummingbirds can be found in form of annuals and perennials, from low growing plants to larger shrubs. A few hummingbird favorites are sage (salvia), lobelia and foxglove (digitalis). If possible, choose plants that bloom at different times throughout the year. Lupine is a good early bloomer, and dahlias bloom well into the fall. Summer blooming flowers are numerous and easy to find.

part granulated sugar — not honey — to four parts water. Hummingbirds must feed frequently, generally three to five times per hour. Hummingbirds, with their rapidly beating wings and their ability to hover and dart around quickly, enhance the beauty of any garden. Gardeners that provide food for hummingbirds in their gardens will be rewarded with the presence of these tiny, beautiful birds.

FEEDERS Adding a hummingbird feeder to the garden will ensure your hummingbirds have enough food for those times when flowers aren’t blooming. Hummingbird feeders should be at least partly red and should be kept clean and filled at all times. Fill them with a solution of one

Preventing Drainage Problems in and Around Your Home and Lawn Additionally, consider replacing impermeable surfaces, such as concrete, with materials that can absorb water, such as a vegetable garden, or gravel. A catch basin can be added to collect excess rainwater and irrigation. Above all, it’s crucial to collect excess water away from the area and disperse it in a safe manner. Your best bet is to install a drainage system. Basements and Crawl Spaces

(StatePoint) Drainage problems in and around your home are not just an eyesore, they can cause costly damage, health issues and “surprise” repair costs in the future. “The causes of excess water and flooding are numerous, and nearly every part of the country can be affected any time of year,” says Ryan Larsen, a civil engineer. “Luckily, you can take steps to prevent these issues from cropping up, as well as permanently solve current problems.” Known as “Dr. Drainage” at NDS, Inc, a nationwide leader in landscape drainage solutions, Larsen is offering timely tips for spotting and addressing home drainage issues: Your Yard Low points can easily turn into “water reservoirs,” forming muddy puddles that can potentially attract pesky insects and even destroy your lawn. If improperly addressed, this can eventually cause serious property damage. You can prevent lawn drainage and landscape drainage concerns by optimizing the grading of your yard.

Rainwater runoff from your roof or landscape soaks into the ground and often collects near your home against basement walls, crawl spaces, or in the soil beneath your home’s foundation. Basement and crawl space flooding can lead to mosquito breeding, termite damage, dangerous mold and mildew growth, or worse, your foundation settling and cracking. Damp, musty smells and wet walls are signs that water is getting into your basement or crawl space. Don’t ignore the problem or attempt a quick-and-dirty solution that won’t correct the situation long-term. Certain temporary fixes can actually make the problem worse. Luckily, there are do-it-yourself drainage kits available, such as FloWell and EZ-Drain, which are usually better performing and easier to install than a traditional, gravel dry well or French drain. However, when dealing with more complex drainage issues, consider hiring a contractor. “Just be sure to check online ratings and references to ensure you’re going with someone qualified and experienced,” stresses Larsen. Ten Things to Consider When Deciding Whether to Sell Your Home (StatePoint)

As the economy continues to strengthen, you may wonder whether to stay in your current home or sell while the timing seems perfect. Since there are many things to sort out, the experts at Homes.com have put together a comprehensive overview of things to consider: • Size: If your home is too small, moving may be a more affordable, less stressful option than additions, which can be costly and overwhelming. You can expect to recoup anywhere from 45 to 75 percent in additional home appreciation, depending on the project, according to Remodeling.com. However, the return on investment is not always immediate, which is something to consider if you’re planning to sell immediately. • Renovations: If the necessary renovations to stay in your current home seem overwhelming, it may be time to move. For example, a new roof can cost anywhere from $5,000 to $30,000 or more, according to Choice Roofing Group. Large-scale home issues may decrease a home’s market value, but conversely, many home-seekers love the opportunity to customize their dream home. • Competition: Do your research. Online tools such as Homes.com’s Home Values Channel can help determine your home’s worth. Then, work with a real estate

professional to determine a competitive price point, and let the bidding begin. • Lifestyle change: Just as growing families need more room, a shrinking family might mean it’s time to downsize. Retired and looking to travel? Downsizing can free disposable income for a world adventure. • Demand: As demand picks up, builders are ready to keep up, and that means brand new homes at varying, competitive prices. Consider selling to take advantage of increased demand and tightening supply. • Equity: Year-over-year home equity growth reached eight percent at the end of 2013, as reported by the Homes.com Local Market Index. If you love your current place, continue enjoying your home and reap the benefits of increased equity when the time comes to sell.

activities. Are you happy where you are? • Availability: Keep an eye on the market by signing up for free email alerts on Homes.com; receive notifications when new homes meeting your specific criteria become available. Take your time and wait for the perfect home.

• Local economy: If you live in a growing town, it may be wise to stay put. Watch the local economy grow for a year or two and then decide if it’s a good decision to relocate.

Four Reasons to Keep Up With Home Maintenance (StatePoint) After a busy work week, it can be hard to get motivated to complete chores and tasks around the house. And knowing what tasks to do and when to do them may not come intuitively for everyone. But neglecting home maintenance is a mistake, say experts. “Regular home maintenance can benefit your family’s health, safety and pocketbook,” says Elizabeth Dodson, Co-Founder of HomeZada, a digital hub to store pertinent information about your home. “Consider creating a home maintenance schedule to stay organized and motivated.” With this in mind, here are several examples of how to maintain your home and why it’s important:

Avoiding Replacements • Mineral deposit build-up in your refrigerator’s ice maker can eventually cause a leak that could damage the refrigerator and its contents. Improving Safety • Lint build-up in dryer ducts is flammable and a common cause of house fires. An annual cleaning eliminates this dangerous situation. You should also regularly clean your dryer’s lint filter after every couple of loads. Likewise, you can prevent fires with checks on electrical and gas

“Exuberant hues will be popular this year as a way for homeowners to show the world their energy,” says Kate Smith, a color trend forecaster and president of Sensational Color. “For those going for a classic feel, colors that are vibrant, yet at the same time, offer comfort, warmth and reliability will reign.” For homeowners looking to express their “colorful selves,” consider selecting a paintable fiberglass door with a smooth finish. For example, those from Therma-Tru Classic-Craft Canvas Collection and Pulse, feature clean lines, crisp angles and attractive glass configuration options, and are ideal for adding personal expression to a home. According to Smith, the top five door colors for the "exuberant homeowner" in 2014 include: • Capri: A tropical blue that wakes up natural woods and neutral surroundings, this hue adds a splash of energy. • Raucous Orange: This color demands attention with its energetic tone and makes the perfect punctuation point for homes with a modern look. • Dynamo: This flirty violet hue instantly updates traditional color schemes for a trendier home front. • Relic Bronze: A deep, almost brown mustard color, “Relic Bronze” reflects aged beauty. • Quixotic Plum: This sophisticated deep purple is where trendy meets timeless. The top five door colors for those following the more classic trend of

comfort, as identified by Smith include: • Georgian Bay: Brighter than dark navy, this step-above reserved blue is a trusted color when it comes to the welcoming message it sends to family and friends. • Show Stopper: Like classic red at dusk, “Show Stopper” adds a touch of mystery to this bright hue. A slight spin on traditional red, this color warmly welcomes people to a home. • Polished Mahogany: The deep, rich shade of brown has a staying power that traverses trends and captures a solid feeling for homeowners. • Classic French Grey: Stepping out of the shadows to stand on its own, this cool, neutral grey will continue to rule the palette in 2014. • Gulfstream: This bright, modern blue has an of-the-moment appeal. At the same time, it still feels rooted in something familiar and nostalgic for homeowners. Whether you follow new trends or stick to tradition, don’t forget to take your entire home’s exterior into consideration. From roof to door, a “top down” approach can help you pick color combinations that are eye-pleasing and flow naturally to create curb appeal. For tips on picking the perfect colors for your home’s exterior, including the front door, download a free copy of Smith’s e-book at www.thermatru.com. This year, don’t conform or be bored. With a paintable door, you can make fresh updates as often as you like.

Basic Electrical Wiring Precautions

Safe Electrical Wiring

According to the National Fire Protection Association, there is a one-in-four chance a fire will be reported at your house during your lifetime. In 2011, fires caused 15,635 injuries and 2,640 deaths.

Faulty or damaged electrical wiring is one of the causes of home fires. It's crucial for every homeowner to realize the importance of having safe electrical wiring in their homes in order to avoid damage to property and loss of lives.

Even if you don’t own the home you currently live in, you still need to know a thing or two about safe electrical wiring to ensure your own safety and that of the people who live with you. FINANCIAL ISSUES The desire to save money is one of the most cited reasons people end up with faulty or low-quality electrical wiring in their homes. Quality electrical services come at a price, and with good reason. The work that needs to be done is complex and dangerous at times. But during financially trying times, people want to save every last penny they can. Instead of hiring the most qualified electrician to install the wiring for their home, some homeowners go with the one who charges the lowest fees. Unfortunately, this often means they won't get the quality service they need, and they may be inadvertently putting themselves and their home at great risk. UPDATING CIRCUITS Electricity-related house fires occur because many homeowners fail to have their home's electrical wiring updated. This is true for those who live in older homes that have not been checked by an electrician for a long time. You may not have experienced any electrical problems, but if you know that your home's wiring has not been

Sometimes, electricityrelated accidents still take place regardless of how responsible homeowners are in checking their home's electrical wiring. In order to avoid these accidents, here are some of the basic electrical wiring precautions you should take: • Turn off the main power switch whenever electrical repairs are being done, no matter how minor those repairs are. • Avoid coming into contact with electrical wiring if your hands and feet are wet. • Avoid using extension cords with multiple sockets unless necessary. Plugging in more appliances than what your electrical wiring can support can lead to circuit breaks and overloads. • Seal off exposed wires and replace cracked sockets as soon as you see them.

inspected in the last 10 or so years, you need to get in touch with an electrician as soon as possible and have new wires installed as a precautionary measure. Ideally, houses should be checked for damaged or faulty electrical wiring every five years. Some homeowners have this

done every two or three years. You do have to pay for such services, but it is worth it when you can sleep more soundly at night knowing that your house and your family are protected against house fires and other electricityrelated catastrophes.

• Read the manuals of appliances to make sure you use them properly. If you are unsure of how a particular electrical repair should be done, the safest thing to do is hire a professional electrician to do the job.

Is Your Air Conditioner Ready?

Some say it will be as warm this summer as it was cold last winter. Time will tell!

Here comes summer and hopefully warm weather! It’s time to start thinking about your air conditioning equipment. Is it ready to turn on and run? Are there things needing to be checked to ensure reliability for this cooling season? Here are a few facts and ideas. Maintaining equipment properly helps to: • Keep the system heating and cooling effectively, correctly and as energy conscious as it can. • Maximize the life expectancy. • In some cases, preventive maintenance is required as a condition of warranty. As a homeowner, what should I do? • Change the air filter on a regular basis; some homes and types of filtration will need a filter changed once per year. Other air filters and systems might need a filter change once every month. Check your air filter monthly to determine if it needs changing. Remember- the seasons, pets, home conditions, allergies; all of these will be a determining factor as to how often to change the filter. • The outside unit, or condenser needs to be clean as well. If these get impacted with dirt, energy usage rises, sometimes drastically. The air conditioning

do something, but how much should I do? How little can I get by with?” This an excellent question, with a lot of potentially different answers. As the EPA has mandated the usage of refrigerants; a lot of confusion has occurred as a result. Yes, you can change just the outdoor unit. Be aware, your unit is probably Freon 22 (R-22). This refrigerant is no longer being used in new units precharged from the factory. New units are available that come from the factory dry-shipped (that is, no refrigerant in them). This means the installing contractor will charge the unit as part of the installation. He may charge it with R-22 or with a retro-fit refrigerant designed to be compatible with your system. If choosing a new system involving the condenser and indoor coil (evaporator); 410A refrigerant is used. This refrigerant has now been around for many years and is proven successful. An option that arises for homeowners who choose to replace the entire cooling system is a myriad of cooling efficiencies (commonly called SEER). Don’t be afraid to ask questions of your contractor; he is there for you and should help you make informed decisions based on your needs and desires.

compressor has to work harder to cool the home. So how do I clean it? Some homeowners do this themselves, others do not. Let’s look at a few key ideas if you want to do this yourself. • ALWAYS, no exceptions here- turn the power off to the condenser. • With a garden hose, spray the finned surfaces; it works best to spay at a downward angle when rinsing the dirt accumulation off the coil surface. • Do not spray the electrical disconnect. Please be aware-electrical safety is of the utmost concern here; if you’re not aware of all of the risks associated with performing this procedure, don’t do it. There are many reputable and qualified contractors who can perform this procedure and check the other necessary items to ensure your system is running at its peak. What about air quality within the home? GeneralAire, a Michigan company states on their website- “Since the air indoors can be many times more polluted than outdoor air, it can have an adverse affect on you and your family’s health.” There are many excellent products designed and available to help with air purification as well as humidification. “OK, so I need to replace the outdoor unit (the condenser); it stopped last year and I know I need to

Ways to Update Your Home’s Outdoor Spaces for the Season

(StatePoint) Are your home’s outdoor spaces a viable place to dine, relax and entertain? If not, consider making better use of your patio, balcony, yard or deck by prioritizing your home upgrade. “Your home’s outdoor spaces, like the rooms inside it, should be comfortable, attractive and designed for everyday living,â€? says Leah Drill, spokesperson for Bed Bath & Beyond. “Don’t underestimate the potential of these areas.â€? Drill is offering some tips for making your yard your favorite “roomâ€? of the house: • Weather resistance should be a top consideration when picking outdoor furniture. Rustresistant steel and tempered glass are both great options. Wood furniture should be properly treated

to withstand the elements. For covered spaces, you have fewer limitations on materials. • Don’t sacrifice comfort or style for weather resistance -- the two can co-exist. Use cushions and pillows to brighten modern dĂŠcor and add comfort and style to chairs, chaises, loungers and benches. For example, Bed Bath & Beyond’s Wildwood Toss Pillows are easy to clean and are made using fabric that is resistant to mildew, fading and stains. • Shade is crucial. Be sure to create plenty of it with strategic vegetation and umbrellas. • Make your patio or deck feel more “homeyâ€? and add a splash of color with an outdoor rug. Check

the tag to see if the rug is made of polypropylene, which offers staining, fading and mold resistance. Another great feature to look out for is UV resistance. • Don’t make your guests leave a great party to head inside every time they need a new beverage. Make your patio complete with an outdoor bar. • Give the space a centerpiece with a gas burning fire pit. It’s a great place for guests to gather. More outdoor home improvement inspiration can be found at www.BedBathAndBeyond.com. Whether you’re updating a small balcony or outfitting a spacious yard, there are plenty of ways to increase the comfort and functionality of your home’s outdoor spaces.

SOME THINGS ARE TOO GOOD NOT TO BE TRUE! “… Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” – John 20:29

Why is it so hard for some to believe in the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead? Ever since that first Easter, many have tried (unsuccessfully) to disprove it with such ridiculous theories as “stolen body,” “wrong tomb,” “swoon” theories (to name a few). None of these have historic credibility. The fact is no one, including the Roman authorities and Jewish officials of Jesus’ time, could point to His dead body in that tomb. There can be no doubt that our Lord’s resurrection is at the very heart of the Christian faith (I Corinthians l5:l4 NIV). Over the centuries, people of faith have relied heavily upon the historical record of the Biblical witness. After all, Mark’s account of the gospel as well as I Corinthians l5 were written very close to the event itself (AD 60s – within a generation of Jesus’ ministry on earth). The Biblical record is compelling and the evidence is credible. Jesus was who He claimed to be! So … what do we learn from the gospel accounts that would support our belief in His resurrection? Among other examples … • The tomb was empty. • The grave clothes were undisturbed. • The Lord was seen. • Lives were changed. • The disciples staked their lives on a belief in the resurrection. • No one dies for a lie. If the church was based on a myth, she would have died in the first century. There is a reason for the incredible growth of Christianity from Pentecost forward: We serve a living Savior! Either we believe it or we don’t. It’s that simple. There is a saying, “Some things are too good to be true.” But I say the resurrection of Jesus Christ is too good not to be true! Again, to quote Jesus, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” (John 20:29). Prayer: Dear living Christ, help me to truly believe in Your living presence. Amen. Peace to you and please join us for worship in a church where Jesus’ love is lived and His living presence experienced.

COMMUNITY SHOPPERS GUIDE...OTSEGO, MI 49078...April 19, 2014...Phone 694-9431

Did you know?

In 1916, a circus came to town and the railroad cars stopped at the tracks on the east edge of town. The animal handlers attempted to transport at least two elephants over a bridge, in order to lead them to the fairgrounds on the west edge of town. The elephants would have none of this bridge crossing business and attempts to swim the animals across the river went horribly wrong. Two of the elephants ran amuck and one ended up in a farmer's field north of town. The farmer used a team and equipment to lead the elephant back to town, but a second elephant rampaged through the downtown area. The elephant wandered into a building that was under construction on the corner of South Main and West Bridge Streets and crashed through the floor into the basement. Men built a ramp out of railroad ties to get the elephant safely out of the basement and the people of Plainwell are still talking about it. The building still stands and is now the Campbell Pharmacy, at 102 S. Main.
