Did you know?
East of the Farmer Street bridge lies an island in the Kalamazoo River that once held Otsego's Island Park. Built in the 1880s, the park was accessed via a footbridge that led from Farmer Street to the west tip of the island. A cement block on the west end still offers evidence of that bridge. Family gatherings and Sunday concerts at the island's gazebo were popular events. Unfortunately, the dangers in crossing the bridge and several floods in the 1920s led to the park's demise.

Tips To Get Your Vehicle Ready For Summer Check hoses for cracks, leaks, and loose connections. Hoses should be firm, especially where they are most vulnerable near clamps that connect to the radiator or engine. Soft or flexible hoses often indicate a problem. Likewise, check belts for cracks and damage. A smooth or slick belt may be a sign of excessive wear. Material should not be separated into different layers. Experts say belt failure rises dramatically after 36,000 miles. If you’re beyond that point, talk with your mechanic about replacing them.
Tires Summer can be tough on your tires. That’s because tire pressure changes with rising temperatures. Under-or overinflated tires put you at risk for accidents, blowouts and flats. Check your owner’s manual to make sure your tires are inflated to the manufacturer’s specifications. This will help you save money at the pump, too. Properly inflated tires increase your vehicle’s fuel efficiency by up to three percent. If you haven’t already, change your winter tires to all-season or summer tires. Winter tires are heavier and wear faster during the summertime, lowering your fuel efficiency. (That really adds up on summer road trips!) Before hitting the road, check your tires for wear. (Ideally, you should check your tires every 3,000 miles.) Have your local service shop check your tires for proper alignment and balance before a long road trip, too.

Shearer was last serving as Superintendent, Skills Management Branch with Headquarters, Air Force Personnel Center, Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas. Shearer is the son of Billy F. and Peggy K. Shearer of Allegan, Mi., and father of Amanda R. Shearer and Bethany C. Shearer, both of Mascoutah, Ill. He is a 1984 graduate of Otsego High School, MI., and earned a Master’s Degree in 2008 from Webster University, St. Louis, MO.

“HOPE BEYOND DEATH” “Brothers and sisters, we want you to know about those Christians who have died so you will not be sad, as others who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and that he rose again. So because of him, God will raise with Jesus those who have died” (I Thessalonians 4:13 – New Century Version)
Before her death, following a long battle with multiple sclerosis, Natalie Sleeth wrote words of faith and hope for her grandchildren. It dawned upon her that she was growing older and that her body was wearing out. She talked to God about it and asked for help. The Lord said to her, “My child, when I made the world and filled it with people, I had a plan. I wanted my people to have life for as long as they could, but not forever because then my world would be too full with not enough room for everybody. I planned it so that when it was time to leave the earth, my people would come and live with me in heaven where there is no pain or sadness or sickness or anything bad.” She asked, “Is my time to come and live with you getting closer?” And God said, “Yes, but be not afraid for I will always be with you and I will always take care of you.” Natalie then asked, “But I will miss my family and my friends, and they will miss me.” And God said, “Yes, but I will comfort them and turn their tears into joy and they will remember you with happiness and be glad for your life among them.” Slowly Natalie began her journey to heaven and each day as she drew nearer she could see light and hear beautiful music in the distance. As she moved toward the gates and into the house of God she said to herself, with great joy in her heart, “That’s good! That’s good!” Natalie Sleeth claimed the one central truth of the Christian faith – death is not the end. Her hymn in part reads: “In our end is our beginning; in our time, infinity; In our doubt there is believing; in our life eternity. “In our death, a resurrection; at the last, a victory, Unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see.” - Hymn of Promise, 1986
I Thessalonians 4:13 answers an age old question concerning our loved ones who have crossed over into Heaven: Will we see them again? On the authority of God’s Holy Word we can answer with a resounding “Yes!” Prayer: Thank you dear Jesus for the comfort and joy of Your presence in this life and in the life to come. In Jesus’ name. Amen. Peace to you and please join us for worship this Sunday in a church where Jesus’ love is lived.

Obituaries Bernice passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2014, in Plainwell. Her unwavering faith in the God who paid for her sins has now enabled her to be received into His presence, where she will spend eternity! Bernice Dorothy Samuelson was born on November 5, 1917 to Anton and Amanda (Engdehl) Samuelson. Her 96 years were filled with service to others and in later years her home became a place of hospitality for traveling family members and missionaries. On December 23, 1939, she married Raymond Norton, who preceded her in death in 1981. They had seven children: Phillip Norton of Plainwell, John (Marsha) Norton of Portage, Dan (Shirley) Norton of FL, Mary Murray of Grant, Martha (Tom) Thornton of Martin, Tim (Karen) Norton of Kalamazoo and Joe (Peggy) Norton of Dorr; and then 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren with three due soon. She was also preceded in death by her parents; siblings, George and Ruth; and a son-inlaw, Joe Murray. Friends may visit with Bernice’s family from 6 to 8 P.M. Friday., April 25 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, April 26 at Watson Bible Church, Pastor Tim Farley officiating. Hazel passed away Sunday, April 20, 2014 at Wings Home in Allegan. She was born August 23, 1927 in Heath Township to Otto and Josie (Boerman) Pegg. Hazel was a 1943 Otsego High School graduate. On August 28, 1948 she married John Rice who passed away in 2002. She was employed at the Allegan County Court House, Nelson Accounting, Otsego Falls, and retired in the early 90’s from Otsego Machine Shop. Hazel enjoyed playing spider solitaire and traveling to Hawaii, Alaska, Cancun and around the continental US. Hazel loved being with her family and friends, spending time with her grandchildren and her dogs and cats. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Surviving are her children, Linda (Dennis) Snider of Plainwell, Brenda “Colleen” (Boyd) Morris of Alaska and Phillip (Nichole) Rice of Otsego; 2 grandchildren, Jeremy (Trish) Morris and Andrea Morris; 4 great-grandchildren, Triston, Haley, Clayton and Tayla; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her siblings, Louis, Howard, Earl, Kenneth and Gerald. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, April 25, 2014 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego.

AGE 38 – JUNCTION CITY, KANSAS Andrea Lynn Cruz was born October 23rd, 1975 in Kalamazoo, MI. She was loved by all who knew her for her boisterous laugh, contagious smile, and whole-hearted zest for whatever she encountered in life. In 1999 Andrea married her best friend and soulmate Juan Cruz; their lives were blessed with 4 beautiful children. She was deeply devoted to her family and was proud to call herself an Army Wife. She embraced the role courageously while her husband served three tours in Iraq & considered it an honor to do her part in service to our country. Always striving to do what was best for her family, Andrea returned to school and proudly received a bachelor degree in Healthcare Administration. Andrea's passion, strength, and determination inspired all those who met her. Her legacy lives on throughout the nation in the countless friends and family she met through her travels. Andrea lost her battle with cancer on April 21st, 2014 in Kansas City, KS. She is preceded in death by her mother Beverlene Roys (Ciminski) in 1989. She will be forever missed by her surviving family - her loving husband Sergeant First Class Juan Cruz and her precious children Triston, Mya, Trace, and Marah Cruz, her stepson, Alexander (Mercedes Cross) Lesman of Owosso; her father Gary (Debe) Roys, her brother Jason (Syndy) Roys of Greenfield, IN; her sister Lisa (James) Decker of Delmar, MD, Jessica (Russell Woodruff) Andrews of Kalamazoo, MI and Christina (Ryan Banks) Loviska of Denver, CO; her mother-in-law Sylvia Miranda of Lansing, her sisters-in-law Marisela Elias of Lansing and Elizaldi Miranda of Washington; several nieces and nephews; and her "sister by choice" Gloria (Sean) O'Brien of Colorado Springs. A Celebration of Life will take place Saturday, May 3rd, 2014 at 11:30 A.M. Service will be held at St. Margaret's Church located at 736 S. Farmer St. in Otsego, MI. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund in Andrea’s name has been established at First Third Bank.
Kyle passed away Saturday, April 19, 2014 in Alamo. He was born July 5, 1941 at the family home in Gun Plain Township to Roy and Jacqueline ( M o r r i s ) Anderson, both now deceased. Kyle graduated from Martin Rural Agriculture School in 1959. For 36 years he was employed at the Plainwell Paper Mill until the very last day of its existence in April of 2001. He enjoyed his home and loved watching sports, movies and history channels. He also loved to watch poker programs and played poker with many family and friends. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and friends. When he was young he loved the out of doors and was a successful hunter, then enjoyed passing those skills on to his younger grandchildren, who because of him have been very successful. Kyle was a member of the Portage/Schoolcraft Eagles, American Legion of Schoolcraft and the 12th Street Baptist Church. On September 15, 1984, in their home, he married the love of his life and best friend, Lynn, who survives. Together they blended a family of six children, Mark Kyle (Donita) Anderson of Texas, Deborah Lee Simpson of Kalamazoo, Dawnl Lynn (Mark) Israels of Portage, Bryen Howard (Brandy) Pion of Martin and deceased son, Craig Eliot. They also have a daughter, Barbara. There are 15 grandchildren, Cherie, Kenneth, Christopher, Savanah, Derek, Adam, Bryce, Bethany, Emily, Nikki, Roy Jr., Melanie, Ashley, Andrew and Amanda; many, many ‘adopted’ grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; brothers, Richard Lee (Lloyal) Anderson of Colorado and David Allen (Linda) Anderson of Nevada. He also left behind to cherish his memory his two four-legged sons, SkipE and Tyty. Funeral services were held April 24th at 12th Street Baptist Church, Pastor Thaddeus Stout officiating. Private burial will be at East Martin Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Kyle may be made to the 12th Street Baptist Church or Disabled American Veterans.
