Dixie Stratton of Plainwell passed away, with her family by her side, on April 4th at the age of 88 at Borgess Hospital She was born on August 4th 1935 to Edwin and Gladys (Cole) Marsh Dixie was the fourth child of eight and attended Plainwell schools She married Robert Stratton on January 1st, 1951, and they had been married for seventy years Dixie enjoyed cooking, flowers, birds, and babies Her family came first at all costs She loved the time that Bob and she spent at their cabin in Hillman and eating ice cream together at Dean's Dixie is survived by her children: Danny (Terry) Stratton, Diann (Dave) Santman, Dennis (Margaret) Stratton and daughter-in-law Judy (Allen) Stratton; her sister, Ethlyn Edgerly; twelve grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, a son Douglas, and her siblings: Patricia, Leroy, Charles, Leonard, Louis, and Pearl Dixie has been cremated per her wishes There will be no formal funeral, but a small family gathering will be held at a later date for the interment of Mom and Dad's ashes

Shirley passed away, Friday, April 19, 2024, at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo She was born October 8, 1939, in Hillsdale, the daughter of Hazel and Paul Moon Shirley was a skilled seamstress who worked alongside her mother doing alterations for Judd Knappers She also dedicated her time to driving a school bus, she was the Otsego Township Treasurer for many years and later owned and operated Quality Products with her husband and sons until her retirement in 2018 Throughout her life, Shirley cultivated various interests and hobbies that brought her joy She found pleasure in bowling and traveling with Jayco, exploring different parts of the world She took great delight in watching her sons and grandsons race stock cars, although it was no secret that driving wasn t her forte - a fact many humorously acknowledged by avoiding being passengers when she was behind the wheel Additionally, Shirley generously shared the sewing skills she acquired from her mother by serving as a sewing leader for the Star 4H club On August 1, 1955, she married Paul Doxey who passed away in 2015 Shirley will be dearly missed by her surviving family and friends, including her children, Dorian (Ruth Beldon) Doxey, Debbie (John) Vist, and Michael (Dion) Doxey; grandchildren, Lisa Shelton, Ryan (Kari) Vist, Pete (Mary) Doxey, Dillon (Brittany) Doxey, Jake (Taylor) Doxey, Jonathan (Liz) Beldon, Caitlyn Bosanic and Joshua Bosanic, along with 18 great-grandchildren, her step-sister, Norma Cox; sisters-in-law, Joan Doxey and Marian Doxey; brother-in-law, Phil Groth and many nieces and nephews She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; infant son Donald and half-sister, Jane Groth A funeral service was held on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at the Winkel Funeral Home, with celebrant MaryAnn DeVries officiating Burial followed at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego Contributions in memory of Shirley may be made to Centrica Care Navigators

Prayer is our lifeline to God It is our most direct access to God There is power in prayer because God is all-powerful There is wisdom in prayer because God is wisdom There is peace in prayer because God is our source of peace We are most alive to God when praying

Here are some lessons I learned about prayer :

QUIET OURSELVES BEFORE GOD

“Be still and know, I am God ” (Psalm 46:10)

Begin by quieting ourselves It is helpful to get an image of Jesus in our minds before we pray It may be Jesus with the children or Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane or Jesus knocking on the door of our hear ts

GOD LOVES PRAISE

“Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless his holy name!” (Psalm 103:1)

In offering praise to God we are showing that prayer is more about God than it is about us The essence of prayer is being aware of the presence of God

CONFESSION OF OUR SINS

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness ” (I John 1:9)

Confession of our sins clears the way of anything that would hinder our conversation with God OFFER OUR REQUESTS TO GOD

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in ever ything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God ” (Philippians 4:6)

While it is true is that God knows our needs before we ask, our loving Heavenly Father wants us to come to Him

RELINQUISH OURSELVES TO GOD

In the Garden of Gethsemane Jesus prayed “Not my will but Your will be done ” (Luke 22:42)

To relinquish is to give ourselves totally to God It is to trust God completely and leave the results with God

THANKSGIVING

“Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his cour ts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name ” (Psalm 100:4)

We thank God for listening to our prayers and working in our lives

I love stained-glass art What makes it so attractive is that the glass is broken and then put back together in a way that’s more beautiful before it was broken The artist breaks the glass to make the glass more beautiful God, the master artist, does the same with us He breaks us to make us beautiful

Jesus does this very thing with bread during the last supper In Matthew 26:26 we read, “Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it, he broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, ‘Take, eat; this is my body’ ” Jesus took common, ordinary bread and transformed it into his uncommon, extraordinary body The bread, like stained-glass, was transformed into something extraordinary only after it was broken

All humans experience brokenness, seasons when God tests, humbles, and maybe even disciplines us I’ve been broken by God many times What I’ve learned is that God is like the loving parent, caring teacher, and passionate coach who will do whatever it takes to help us reach our potential, to help ordinary people like us become extraordinary God doesn’t break us to punish but to purify us, not to humiliate but to humble us, not to destroy but to deepen us God breaks us to make us beautiful Why? Simply because he loves us
