SPRING HOME & LAWN I 2016
Home trends to expect in the year ahead Trends in home remodeling and decor tend to come and go. Something that is popular for a little while can fall out of favor when the next new idea comes along. New trends are always on the horizon, and 2016 may encourage homeowners to try something new. • Metallics and metals are back. Although stainless steel accents in the kitchen have long been popular, the glistening look of metal and metallic shades are back in a big way. Inspired by the 1950s and 1970s, brass, gold and metallic finishes are popular right now. • Texture: Texture is a big component of interior design. Furniture and accessories featuring faux fur and natural fibers are becoming popular. Pieces adorned with cozy materials can seem more inviting. Organic shapes, such as tables looking like the tree trunk they were cut from, also are expected to become more popular. • Artisanal touches in accessories: It’s all about getting back to basics, with homeowners desiring pieces that are oneof-a-kind and handmade rather than mass-produced. Expect to see more accessories that are made by hand or in small batches, like pottery or handwoven textiles, as homeowners are increasingly turning to independent artists and artisans when decorating their homes. Homeowners can even support
independent artists when choosing art for their homes. For example, YourArtGallery.com provides an online marketplace for artists to showcase and sell their work, and buyers looking to support independent artists can rest easy knowing that 90 percent of all image royalties go directly to the artist, a stark contrast to the roughly 50 percent offered by more traditional galleries. • Fabric on the walls: Walls also will be covered in texture and pattern. Textiles will increasingly turn up on walls and in places they haven’t traditionally been seen. Patterns may lean toward floral, tropical and indigenous artisan weaving designs. • Pinks and blues: Expect to see pale pink and blue in various design applications. The Pantone Color Institute® released a blending of two colors, Rose Quartz and Serenity, as their 2016 Color of the Year. This has impacted color trends through all areas of design — including home touches. These colors pair well with mid-tones, like browns and greens, as well as the increasingly popular metallics. • Smart homes: Technology is changing the way people look at their homes. Water-resistant music systems for the bathroom, wirelessly operated Bluetooth devices that turn on lights or appliances from a smartphone and even fixtures that use technology to self-clean are turning up more and more.
Don’t be surprised to notice a resurgence of metallic shades and metals incorporated into home designs in the year ahead. Home decor trends are always changing, adding new life to homes and

SPRING HOME & LAWN I 2016
How to guarantee your garden starts off on the right foot season is still around the corner, completing the following projects can ensure your garden gets off on the right foot. Clear debris One of the best things you can do for your garden as winter winds down is to clear it of debris. Winter can be especially harsh on a landscape, and gardens left to the elements are often filled with debris once spring arrives. Dead leaves, fallen branches, rocks that surfaced during the winter frost, and even garbage that might have blown about in winter winds can all pile up in a garden over a typical winter. Clearing such debris likely won't take long, but it's a great first step toward restoring the garden before the time comes to plant and grow the garden once again. Examine the soil As winter slowly winds down, many gardeners cannot wait to soak up the springtime sun and get their hands dirty in the garden. Such excitement is not just good for gardeners, but can benefit the garden in the months to come as well. Late winter or early spring is a great time to get a head start on the gardening season. Even if gardening
Soil plays a significant role in whether a garden thrives or struggles. Examining the soil before the season starts can help gardeners address any issues before they plant. Ignoring the soil until a problem arises can turn the upcoming gardening season into a lost opportunity, so test the soil to determine if it has any nutrient or mineral deficiencies. This may require the help of a professional, but if a
problem arises, you might be able to adjust the acidity or alkalinity of the soil and still enjoy a successful gardening season. Another way to examine the soil is less complex but can shed light on when would be a good time to get back to work. Reach into the soil and dig out a handful. If the soil quickly crumbles, you can start preparing for gardening seasoning. But if the soil is still clumped together, it needs more time to dry out before you can begin your prep work. Initiate edging Edging is another task gardeners can begin as they get ready for the season. Edge plant and flower beds, but be sure to use a spade with a flat blade or an edger designed to edge flower beds. Such tools will cut deep enough so grass roots that may eventually grow into the flower bed are severed. Depending on how large a garden is, edging can be a timeconsuming task, so getting a head start allows homeowners to spend more time planting and tending to their gardens once the season hits full swing.
mean they won't return once the weather starts to heat up. But as inevitable as weeds may seem, homeowners can take steps to prevent them from turning beautiful gardens into battlegrounds where plants, flowers and vegetables are pitted against unsightly and potentially harmful weeds. Spring is a good time to apply a pre-emergent weed preventer, which can stop weeds before they grow. Though such solutions are not always foolproof, they can drastically reduce the likelihood of weed growth. Though gardeners might not be able to start planting their gardens in late winter or early spring, they can still get outside and take steps to ensure their gardens thrive once planting season begins. How to tend to an indoor herb garden
Fresh herbs and recently picked ingredients can add flavor to any meal. A home chef can even improve the flavor of store-bought or prepared foods with an herb garnish that can transform otherwise bland dishes into something you’ll want to eat again and again. Harvesting fresh herbs is easy for homeowners who have gardens right in their
backyards. However, everyone does not have a backyard, and even those that do might find their gardens threatened by changing seasons or unwanted critters. When gardens are moved indoors, the bounty of fresh ingredients continues no matter the date on the calendar. Herb gardens are perhaps some of the easiest gardens to cultivate indoors because they don’t
require large pots or much space. The plants themselves are relatively compact, and it only takes a pinch of herbs to give a meal some extra flavor. When growing herbs indoors, your indoor growing area must have adequate light to simulate the longer days of summer; otherwise, the plants may go dormant. It’s ideal to have a southern exposure on the herbs, with at least eight hours of sunlight per day. If you do not live in a particularly sunny locale, consider supplementing the plants with grow lights, which will provide the full spectrum of light the plants need to thrive. Indoor air can become too dry for herbs, so you will need to compensate by providing humidity. While there may be added humidity in a kitchen greenhouse window, it still may not be enough to keep the plants healthy. Think about misting the plants daily to create some extra humidity, or place herb pots on top of a water-filled tray with pebbles so the evaporating water will add moisture without making the roots soggy. Insects are another threat to indoor gardens because there is no cold weather to inhibit the hatching of insect eggs. Soil from outdoors may be more susceptible to insects that are already living in the dirt. Instead of soil from outside, use packaged soil or a nonsoil alternative that will hold moisture without the added risk of bugs. If small insects appear, use a mist of soapy water to kill the bugs without harming the plants or making the herbs unfit for eating. Group herbs together according to their watering needs to make maintenance that much easier. New sprouts generally need more water than established plants. Prune the herbs as needed for recipes. If the herbs experience a growth spurt, trim some of the plants and freeze the herbs for later use. Many indoor herb gardeners begin by growing parsley, chives, oregano, and basil, but you can experiment with just about any herb. DE15B684

SPRING HOME & LAWN I 2016
Keep pests away from entertaining areas animals' habitats may see a wider array of animals encroaching on entertaining spaces. Deer, bears, coyotes, and certain bird species can present their own brands of trouble. Homeowners new to an area may have to experience a learning curve to determine which pests are common to a certain area, as well as which seasons bring which creatures. Try natural repellents first
Outdoor entertaining is one of the joys of nicer weather. People routinely gather on the patio or around the pool when the weather warms up, and such recreational activities can foster companionship and reduce stress. However, if nuisance animals and insects are sharing entertaining spaces, these pests can quickly put a damper on the festivities. While it may seem impossible to keep an outdoor entertaining area completely pest-free, there are ways to keep such unwanted intrusions manageable.
Identify common pests Yard pests vary depending on geography, so the first step is to figure out which pests are native to your area. Mosquitoes can be found in many locales, but certain insects may be exclusive to specific regions. For example, palmetto bugs are native to moist, tropical areas, such as the southeastern United States. In addition to insects, squirrels, moles, raccoons, and other rodents may also descend on a property. Neighborhoods that abut natural ecosystems or infringe on wild
To minimize damage to the environment and to protect local wildlife, homeowners should exhaust natural ways to repel pests before resorting to less eco-friendly methods. Animals can be kept out of a yard with fences and other barriers, such as thorny bushes. Many pests are deterred by smells or certain structures in a lawn or garden. For example, inserting chicken wire into a garden bed may be enough to repel burrowing animals. Certain insects, such as flies and mosquitoes, find the aromas of citronella grass, basil and marigold offensive. Surrounding a property with these plants can create a natural bug repellent. Lavender and rosemary are other aromatics that may deter pests. Blood meal and soap solutions can repel deer and other wildlife that may feed on garden plants. Pests attracted to food can be kept at bay with frequent sweeping or
hosing down of the patio. In addition, maintain a clean grill and store trash in tightly secured receptacles. Consider more traditional alternatives If natural repellents do not work, you may need to rely on more traditional products to repel insects and other pests. Beetle traps lure beetles with an inviting scent before the beetle gets trapped in a bag and cannot exit. Traps for wasps and flies follow a similar premise. Bug zappers are largely viewed as an inhumane option but can be highly effective. Unfortunately, these zappers also attract and kill beneficial insects, such as bees and butterflies. Chemical repellents also are available. Stores stock pesticides that will rid plants of damaging insects. These repellents also may be used around the patio to make the area inhospitable to insects and other pests. Contact an exterminator If the problem is simply too difficult to manage on your own, then you might need to contact an exterminator, who can spray the perimeter of the home for bugs and can also be called in to safely trap and remove nuisance animals. An exterminator may also have detailed knowledge of protected species and which habitats can and cannot be disturbed. EL146226

SPRING HOME & LAWN I 2016
Protect yourself from Power Loss before Storm Season By Brian Steensma Spring is the perfect time to protect yourself and your family from potential power outages as we approach the summer storm season. We all know the feeling of inconvenience, stress, even panic that is caused by power outages. They can be extremely costly, even dangerous, as you risk food spoiling, basements flooding, and most importantly family members put at risk who depend on power for the functioning of their medical devices. Let’s face it, our lives have become more and more dependent on reliable electric power. Our expectation of this is undermined repeatedly as violent storms, grid failures, and other service interruptions reveal the vulnerabilities of our overtaxed utility service. Fortunately, there is way to eliminate all this uncertainty, hassle, and stress: an Automatic Standby Generator.
So, why consider one of these automatic standby generators instead of a portable kind where you just wheel it out, start it yourself, and plug it in when the power goes out? Great Question! #1 - No more fueling every few hours Automatic Standby Generators don’t need you to fill them since they run off your existing natural gas or propane supply. That means no more terrifying runs through a horrible storm to the gas station or worrying about whether you will have enough fuel to make it through the storm. No more pulling the rope and hoping your generator starts, no more praying your gasoline isn’t too old, no more stress…just peace of mind. #2 - Automatic Generators start…..well…..Automatically Automatic Standby Generators are permanently installed to your house, kind of like an air conditioner. Your automatic standby generator is on constant alert, monitoring the power supply to your house. If the power goes out, the generator know immediately and will turn itself on and supply power to house, whether you are home or not! So no more
worrying if you are out of town, on vacation, or down south for the winter. Your home is protected no matter what. No spoiled food, no freezing pipes, no worries.
Also, you know how it seems that a lot of times when the power goes out, the weather is really horrible? Kind of comes with the territory doesn’t it? Well, with an automatic generator you don’t even have to get out of your arm chair. No more running through a rainstorm dragging a heavy generator from the barn, no more windows cracked in an ice storm so you can sneak extension cords through, and no more worries about blowing fuses or overloading your generator!
#3 - Automatic Standby Generators can be incredibly affordable! Gone are the days where you had to spend ten thousand dollars to protect your house. The pricing on these units has dropped substantially with some units, like the Generac 7kw PowerPact starting at under $2000. The electrical and mechanical installation should be done by a professional company, preferably with service and support after the sale. A simple on site evaluation can get you professional recommendations on generator size and placement as well as a complete installed price. The total will likely be less than you think and well worth the peace of mind. Don’t wait too long, storm season is just around the corner!

Home projects perfect for spring debris and reattaching gutters that might have become detached from the home on windy winter days and nights. When reattaching loose gutters, make sure the downspouts are draining away from the foundation, as gutters that are not draining properly can cause damage to that foundation and possibly lead to flooding. Take stock of roof shingles
Each spring, homeowners should inspect their gutters to ensure the gutters are still attached to their homes and free of debris. The rejuvenating spirit of spring makes this beloved season an ideal time for homeowners to take stock of their homes and properties and address any issues that arose during the winter. While some homes make it through winter unscathed, the harsh weather of the year's coldest season can add several tasks to homeowners' springtime to-do lists. While some projects are best left to the professionals, others can be tackled even by those homeowners with little or no DIY experience. The following are a handful of projects tailor-made for spring.
Inspect the gutters Gutters tend to bear the brunt of harsh winter weather, and come spring, gutters are in need of inspection if not repair. Winter winds, snow and heavy rainfall can compromise the effectiveness of gutters, which can easily accumulate debris and detach from homes during winter storms. In addition, gutters sometimes develop leaks over the winter months. As a result, homeowners should conduct a careful inspection of their gutters come the spring, being sure to look for leaks while clearing the gutters of
Much like its gutters and downspouts, a home's roof can suffer significant damage over the course of a typical winter. Shingles may be lost to harsh winter winds and storms, so homeowners should examine the roof to determine if any shingles were lost (lost shingles might even be lying around the property) or suffered damage that's considerable enough to require replacement. Summer can be especially brutal on shingles, especially those that suffered significant damage during the winter. If left unchecked or unaddressed, problems with damaged shingles can quickly escalate into larger issues when spring rains and summer sun inevitably arrive, so homeowners should prioritize fixing or replacing damaged shingles as quickly as possible. Check for freeze damage Frozen temperatures can be hard on humans and homes alike, but unlike humans who can stay inside when temperatures dip below freezing,
homes are forced to withstand the elements throughout the winter. External hose faucets are often susceptible to freeze damage. To inspect such faucets, turn the water on and then place a thumb or finger over the opening of the faucet. If your thumb or finger can completely stop the flow of water, the pipe where the water is coming from is likely damaged and will need to be replaced. Examine the lawn for low spots Once a lawn has thawed out, homeowners can patrol their properties looking for low spots in the yard or even low spots within spitting distance of the home's foundation. Such spots increase the likelihood of flooding. Flooding near a home's foundation increases the risk of potentially costly damage, while low spots on the lawn that go ignored can make great breeding grounds for insects, including mosquitoes, when the weather warms up. When low spots are detected, fill them in with compacted soil. Compacted soil can prevent spring rains from flooding a yard or damaging a home's foundation. Assessing potential property damage is a rite of passage for homeowners in the spring. Though some damage is significant, oftentimes even novice DIYers can work their homes and properties back into shape in time to enjoy spring and summer. SH142930

SPRING HOME & LAWN I 2016
Stop weeds before they take over Few things can be as troublesome to gardeners and landscapers as weeds. Weeds seemingly spring up overnight and quickly can overrun lawns and/or garden beds. Landscaping enthusiasts may spend countless hours and weekends coping with weeds without truly getting to the root of the problem. However, preventing weed growth need not be so difficult. According to the experts at “This Old House” and The Family Handyman, the secret to preventing weeds is to maintain a thick, healthy lawn. A vigorously growing lawn will crowd out weeds and block the sun weed seeds need to germinate and thrive. As a result, fewer herbicides may be needed and homeowners can spend less times on their hands and knees pulling out weeds. Mow at the right height Crabgrass is a notoriously virulent weed that can quickly snuff out blades of grass. Crabgrass likes hot, dry conditions, and it only takes one plant to spread the seeds that can overtake the
lawn. Preventing these conditions can stop crabgrass from flourishing. Mowing at higher heights and leaving grass blades taller can shade the soil, helping to prevent the germination of crabgrass. Shady conditions also will help the soil retain moisture and prevent the arid conditions crabgrass likes so much. Water deeply Weeds are accustomed to growing in adverse conditions, including especially hot temperatures. When such conditions arise, weeds establish deep roots while the roots of the grass can easily die off. Instead, when watering, wet the soil to a depth of four to six inches. This helps grass to establish strong root systems that will help lawns overpower pesky weeds. Time weed killers Whether you manually remove weeds or apply weed killers, timing is key. Combat weeds in the early spring before they have a time to fully form and start proliferating through seed dispersement. Once seeds spread, their growth is difficult to control. Recognize that no single herbicide or weeding tactic will work for every type of weed. Broadleaf weeds, like dandelions, unwanted grasses, and sedges are the three most common types of weeds.

SPRING HOME & LAWN I 2016
Did you know? There are thousands of species of ants all over the world. Ants live in many different climates but are notably active and most abundant in warm temperatures. Chances are, at some point during the spring and summer, you will come in contact with ants in your area. Although many ants are black and red, there are a few species of ants that are light brown and even yellowish in color. Pharaoh ants and thief ants are light-colored ants that are often mistaken for each other. Thief ants build colonies in large numbers close to other ant colonies and then use tunneling to "steal" food. Pharaoh ants are also very small and tend to make well-hidden nests, which allow them to infest a property or home quite quickly. Because both of these types of ants can become pests, you may need to hire a professional exterminator if the ants become a nuisance. GT134080

5 things to consider before expanding your home Homeowners who feel their homes are a little confined may be interested in expanding their homes to make them more comfortable and serviceable. Several questions may come to mind when homeowners are considering adding on to an existing home. Expanding a home requires careful consideration. While the end results can be spectacular, expansion is typically a long and costly process that will impede on the lifestyles of a home’s inhabitants during the renovation process. Expect loud noises, work crews and sawdust throughout the project. Depending on which areas are being renovated, residents may feel their lives are in upheaval until the expansion project has been completed. Familiarizing yourself with the expansion process and recognizing potential snags along the way can make planning and coping that much easier.
1. Many homeowners first consult with a contractor when mulling over expansions. However, you may want to speak with an architect first. He or she may be able to suggest renovations that fit with your neighborhood and appeal to prospective buyers when you decide to sell your home in the future. 2. Visit your building inspection or municipal office to learn the local regulations. You want to ensure that any renovations you make are done in keeping with safety codes and laws. 3. While you’re thinking of your neighbors, give them the heads up on your potential plans. This way they will not be surprised by the extra noise and activity when the renovation begins. 4. Remodeling can cost anywhere from $200 to $600 per square foot added. You’ll need to figure out a way to pay for the renovations, and you may consider refinancing your home. Make sure it is a smart time financially to do so based on current real estate market conditions. Also know that additions will likely increase your home insurance coverage needs.
Consult with the insurance company about estimated charges and any restrictions they have. 5. Consider a standalone structure when mulling over your options. Sometimes the cost of putting up a
free-standing office or another structure on your property may end up being less expansive than expanding on what you already have. Think creatively and research all of your options before committing to a project. SH162866

Are formal spaces disappearing? Formal dining and living spaces could once be found in every home. But such rooms are becoming more and more rare, thanks in large part to the rising popularity of multipurpose open spaces. As early as 1992, architects and builders were predicting the demise of formal living spaces in homes. At that year’s International Geographical Congress, architectural geographer Artimus Keiffer estimated the living room and dining room would disappear from the American residence in the next century, to be replaced by the family-entertainment room and the computer room. According to North Carolina-based builders Stanton Homes, many home buyers have inquired about converting their formal dining rooms into office spaces or rooms to be used for purposes other than dining. The National Association of Home Builders also released a special report listing home features expected to become the norm within the next several years. More than half of the NAHB study participants expected the living room to merge with other spaces in the home, while 30 percent expected it to vanish to save on square footage. So what is taking the place of living rooms and dining rooms? Great rooms and open-concept kitchens have steadily caught the eyes of designers and homeowners alike. Such rooms enable a free flow between lounging and entertaining spaces and the heart of the home — the kitchen. On-the-go families may not be sitting down to the same formal dinners they once were, or they don’t need the pomp and circumstance of formal meals. Large eatin-kitchens function well for family meals and even

Thanks to the advent of wireless technology and mobile devices, home residents no longer need to be relegated to one room in the house for their media watching or computer use. This may have helped to accelerate the disappearance of living rooms. In addition, the concept of devoting one space as a media-free zone (traditional formal living or sitting rooms tend to be tech-free) may seem

One by one the years have flown by since we said “I do.” I treasure our 46 years of shared memories, from big events and holidays, to simple daily pleasures. Some tearful times along life’s way, some joys that can’t be measured. One by one, each year now gone, but still ours for each and every happy memory.
I love you more today than ever!

revdminor@att.net _____________________________________ “Put on the whole armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” – Ephesians 6:1
Our world is becoming increasingly more violent. A day does not go by that violence does not rear its ugly head somewhere. Acts of terrorism are widespread and the world is pretty fragile right now. We need to protect ourselves … arm ourselves.
As always, we look to Jesus and the Bible for guidance. Jesus was born with a price over His head and the threat of death was always upon Him and remained so up to the time He died on the cross for our sins. One of his friends, named Simon, was a Zealot but Jesus transformed him into a person who was zealous for God’s kingdom. At the time of His arrest in the garden, one of His companions drew his sword but, Jesus said, “Put your sword back in its place, for all who draw the sword will die by the sword” (Matthew 26:52). During that time He could have called l0,000 angels but chose not to (Matthew 26:53). Here is God’s plan for arming the world.
PUT ON …
- TRUTH - Jesus is truth (John l4:6). - PEACE - Jesus is the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). - RIGHTEOUSNESS - He is our righteousness (Matthew 6:33). - FAITH - “Jesus is the author and perfecter of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2). - SALVATION - He is our Savior (Luke l9:10). - WORD OF GOD – Jesus is the Word who became flesh (John 1:14). - PRAYER - He is the mediator between us and God (Hebrews 9:15).
Summary: It is clear that Jesus living in us is our best defense against evil.
FUN, FOOD & FELLOWSHIP

Debra Lynn (DeBruyne) HARRIS
AGE 61 – JACKSON, TN formerly of Plainwell Debra Lynn made her transition from this earthly home to her heavenly home on Saturday, March 26, 2016. She was raised in Plainwell, Michigan and spent the past 18 years living in Jackson TN with her fiancee Chris Thomason of TN whom she leaves behind. She loved many things in life - fishing, playing the guitar, singing, writing, anything outdoors, a good joke and many other things. It was the simple things in life that really brought her the most peace. Although she will be missed by all of her family, friends & loved ones, she is reunited with her son Michael who entered heaven before her in 2009 and one thing is for sure that all her tears are gone. All the torment and suffering that she endured has finally ended and she is now ALIVE for eternity, freed from everything that ever tried to hold her captive here on earth and the LORD JESUS CHRIST HAS GIVEN HER VICTORY!! Debbie was born August 6th, 1954 in Portsmouth, Virginia to Bernard & Barbara DeBruyne of Otsego, MI who are surviving. Also surviving are Debbie’s brothers Mark & (Kathy) DeBruyne of Plainwell, MI and Mike (Tammy) DeBruyne of Kalamazoo, MI.
