Let me tell you about an amazing woman. You will recognize her name immediately. I mention her to salute women who are mothers not by giving birth but by love.
Hint: She loves the Loyola University Chicago Ramblers! During the recent NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament, she was called many things including “the face of college basketball” an “International Celebrity” and “America’s most popular nun.”
Of course I refer to Jean Dolores Schmidt, also called “Sister Jean”, Chaplain of the men’s basketball team since 1994. She is many things to many people. Among other things Sister Jean is a coach, advisor, confidant, encourager, prayerwarrior and more! Are these not the qualities of a godly mother? Regarding her newfound celebrity status, Sister Jean says, “… if we’re doing what we’re supposed to be doing, then each one of us is a celebrity, each one is bright in the eyes of God.”
Let me tell you the story about another remarkable woman. We have all heard of Mary, mother of Jesus. Before Mary there was a woman named Elizabeth. They were cousins. When Mary was told she would bear “the Son of the Most High” (Luke 1:32), she spent about three months with Elizabeth (Luke 1:5, 6).
Elizabeth came from noble roots, being a descendant of Aaron the high priest. Her husband was a priest named Zechariah and they were both blameless before the Lord (Luke 1:5, 6). Luke, the physician/writer wants the reader to know “they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren; and they were both along in years (Luke 1:7). Why mention that? It may be that in the councils of Heaven God had a plan for her. God gave Elizabeth and Zechariah a son, John the Baptist, who would become the forerunner of Jesus Christ (Luke 1:17, John 1:23). The point is God gave Elizabeth the gift of friendship. And Mary needed her friendship. Elizabeth cared so much that she put her own excitement to one side so that she could declare Mary’s son as Lord before his birth (Luke 1:42)! While remembering our mothers, let us also honor women who are mothers by love. Let us also thank God for women who are mothers to many. Mothers like the Biblical Elizabeth and Sister Jean.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for the gift of love and friendship. Bless all women today and every day! Amen.

AGE 89 – PLAINWELL, MI Richard went to be with the Lord surrounded by family Thursday, May 10, 2018 in Battle Creek. He was born June 26, 1928 in Kalamazoo the son of Harold and Dora (Hamacher) Wiers. Richard proudly served his country in the US Navy during WWII. For many years he had worked for General Motors until his retirement in 1991. In his free time he enjoyed dancing, roller skating, singing karaoke, bird watching, growing roses, playing cribbage and following the Detroit Tigers and NASCAR. Richard loved his family very much especially his grandchildren. He had been a member of the Comstock VFW and a life member of the Delton VFW Post #422. In 1947 he married Frances Smith, they were together for 20 years. On May 19, 1973 he married Joan Hill who passed away in 2008. Surviving are his children, Mary (Jim) Bouwer of Kalamazoo, Larry (Judy) Wiers of Galesburg and John (Shani) Wiers of Kalamazoo; 7 grandchildren; 17 greatgrandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Gary Wiers and siblings, Barb Thiel, Donna Haggerman and Don Wiers. Friends may visit with Richard’s family from 2-4 P.M., Monday, May 14, 2018 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, May 15, 2018. Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Military Honors by Otsego VFW Post #3030. Julie is an associate professor of chemistry at Grand Valley State University. She and her husband, Mark, and their son, Luke, are active members of Otsego United Methodist Church and reside in Otsego. Julie earned her B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin - Madison and her Ph.D. in Chemical Education from the University of Northern Colorado. She enjoys sharing her time and science knowledge with teachers in Otsego Public Schools, and will be doing science experiments with the Bulldogs Bookin’ Bus this summer. Julie will be sharing her message about “Who does God call you to be?” from a personal, professional, and spiritual perspective.

Margaret passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at her daughter’s home in Richmond, Indiana. She was born February 6, 1932 in Defiance, Ohio, the daughter of James and Ella (Gallent) Bailey. For many years Margaret had been a nurse’s aide at Stanford Lodge in Plainwell. In her spare time she enjoyed knitting and quilting. On May 27, 1951 in Plainwell she married Dale Wells who passed away in 2013. Surviving are her children, Harry Wells of Delton, Rick (Marcia) Wells of Plainwell, Christine Branch of Ohio, Linda (Steve) Earl of Indiana, Connie Stanley of Indiana and Deborah Wells of Indiana; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sons, Dale, Gordon and Thomas; grandson, Skyler Branch and many siblings. Barbara went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 4, 2018 at her home in Plainwell. She was born July 6, 1939 in Sparta, the daughter of William and Nina (Merritt) Jordan. Barb had worked at Life Care Center of Plainwell for several years. In her spare time she loved to shop and enjoyed bowling, traveling up north to Mackinaw City, working in her yard in her flower beds, taking care of her dogs and spending time with her friends and family. She was a member of the Lighthouse Baptist Church in Plainwell. On August 28, 1967 she married Lawrence Pickard who passed away in 2003. Surviving are son, Larry (Tina) Pickard of Plainwell, grandchildren, Amanda (Eric) Ramsey of NC and Todd (Bridgett) Cronkhite of Plainwell; great-grandson, Emmett Cronkhite and brothers, Ed (Diane) Jordan of Allendale and Dick (Arlene) Jordan of Marne. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, William and sister, Judy. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 12:00 P.M., Tuesday, May 22, 2018, at the Lighthouse Baptist Church in Plainwell with Pastor Steve Smail officiating. Terry R. MCNEES AGE 70 – OTSEGO, MI
Terry passed away Monday, May 7, 2018 at Borgess Pipp Hospital in Plainwell. He was born October 9, 1947 in Plainwell the son of Howard and Agnes (Ockerman) McNees. Terry proudly served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He had been a truck driver for many years and had driven over 3 million miles. In his spare time Terry enjoyed old cars and motorcycles and farming with his companion, Lynette Collins. He was a member of the Otsego VFW Post #3030. Surviving are his sons, Tony McNees and Tim McNees both of Arizona; 4 grandchildren, Talia, Janeann, Lisa and Tim; 4 great-grandchildren; brothers, Ron (Sandy) McNees of Otsego and Tom McNees of Kalamazoo; sister, Carol Pantzer of Tennessee; several nieces and nephews and his friend who was like a brother, Tim Brewster. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Terry. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A celebration of Terry’s life will be held Thursday, May 17, 2018, from 5-7 P.M., at the Otsego VFW Post #3030.
